If you are anything like me, you may enjoy and appreciate several different styles of design. I tend to gravitate toward farmhouse, but I also love pops of modern and industrial. I have a slight obsession with redecorating and love to find ways to reinvent a space. Sometimes it's as easy as changing out the colors in a room and other times it's a complete overhaul. Thankfully, my patient husband usually plays along with the remodeling projects I get myself into at home. I am a DIYer by nature and love to rehab homes and repurpose furniture. Having a dad as a contractor is great because he taught all of us how to do some light remodeling, so it is in my blood. My husband and I used to rehab homes, and It was so fun to walk into a house and dream about how we wanted to transform the space into something new. It’s amazing what new paint, fresh finishes and knocking down a wall or two can do for your space. Now that I have four children, those days of flipping homes are behind me, but I still love looking through magazines of beautiful interior design to get inspiration for a possible future project. I loved so many of the ideas in the homes we featured this month. I hope you enjoy looking at the art of their design and maybe you will walk away with a new idea or two.

he Browning home has always been a gathering place. Built in 1889 by the owner of the Lee’s Summit mercantile, Browning Drygoods, it was a hub for
family life, even after the grown Browning children grew up and moved to homes next door. History has it that neither of the adjoining Browning residences had kitchens because everyone returned to the home at 202 SW Third Street for family meals. The Browning home recently took on new life as a gathering place, opening as Downtown Lee’s Summit’s first bed-and-breakfast in December 2016. Liesl and Harlen Hays purchased the creamy yellow two-story colonial in October 2016, envisioning it as a retreat where couples and groups could come to relax, free from the concerns and clutter of everyday life. And of course, have a great meal to start the day. Liesl Hays attributes the speedy two-month turnaround between purchasing the home and opening it to the investment previous owners had made in the property prior to sale. The Hays cleaned, painted and decorated the home in a soothing palette of grays, blues and white. Liesl worked closely with downtown merchants Very Violet and Cameron’s Home Furnishings to furnish the home with both new and refurbished pieces as well as seasonal accents and décor. “They really helped us create a farmhouse chic look in the style of Chip and Joanna Gaines,” Hays says. “To attract a younger generation, we really wanted it to feel clean and fresh. Extending the B&B market to younger couples just wanting a staycation or a getaway is really important to me.” The Browning Bed and Breakfast offers close proximity to Downtown Lee’s Summit restaurants and shops as well as the Amtrak station. Guests can choose from two queen bed guest rooms

“I think really customizing our guest’s experience is what helps set us apart,” Hays says. “That’s what I love about my job. I get to be with people when they’re happy.” with adjoining bathrooms or a room with a king bed with en suite bathroom. Guest rooms include a snack basket, bottled water, beverages and toiletries including locally-made soaps and lotions. Before a stay, Hays or the B&B’s on-site manager, Lisa Sweeten, reach out to guests, allowing them to pre-select their breakfast menu options. The spring menu features a variety of pastries freshly baked by Hays including homemade lemon muffins topped with toasted coconut flakes and a warm vanilla glaze as well as a strawberry crumb coffee cake. A blueberry almond parfait includes homemade blueberry almond granola with layers of vanilla yogurt and fresh blueberries. A scramble of farm-fresh eggs with ham and cheese rounds out the breakfast menu and ensures guests won’t be hungry for hours. Hays says finding out what is unique to each guest or if they’re celebrating a particular event helps her create a memorable experience for each person. When she found out one guest was celebrating her 60th birthday with a visit to the B&B, Hays made dinner reservations at Third Street Social, post-dinner reservations at The W and purchased flowers for the occasion. “I think really customizing our guest’s experience is what helps set us apart,” Hays says. “That’s what I love about my job. I get to be with people when they’re happy.” 20

Throughout the custom-build process, every detail was considered. The windows were a significant design element to the home, bringing in lots of natural light. “I
n everything, I tried to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility,” the successful and driven ophthalmologist says, describing how he’s integrated his passion
for music and lakeshore living to create an environment of relaxation. “You can’t come home and not have a 20 point drop in blood pressure.” In warmer months, Silverstein loves water skiing with a group of neighbors and enter-
taining on his expansive deck and yard which features an infinity pool. In winter months, he continues to appreciate the picturesque view, but his love for aquatic life also manifests itself indoors. Upon walking into the living room, visitors are immediately drawn to a 900-gallon aquarium at the home’s epicenter, vibrant with a living reef and inhabited by 200 fish, coral and anemone. The 15,000-square-foot home constructed from 2007 to 2009 fuses two styles—a refined and polished Wyoming lodge meets Tuscan villa. It includes nine bathrooms, six fireplaces, a spa room with in-ground hot tub, a home theater, gym, game room, greenhouse, workshop and library. Over the course of ten years of planning, Silverstein worked closely with Leawood-based Holthaus Building, Inc. and architect Scott Bickford to bring his dream home to life. 38

Silverstein devoted personal attention to design details great and small that continue to bring him joy. He approaches the 11-foot wrought iron front doors and pulls the handles he designed to welcome guests into his home. Within the home’s expansive foyer and centrally located 1,200-bottle wine cellar, he takes pride in the blown-glass sconces he designed with Dierk Van Kepple. The home features luxurious wood, marble and granite finishes throughout, from striped zebrawood cabinetry and labradorite island in the kitchen to the finest mahogany in the library. Each bathroom is carefully considered—one features walls tiled with mother-of-pearl while another is lined in hand-stitched leather. The 58-foot tall spiral staircase's wrought iron railing mimics vines reaching to the sky, illuminated during daylight hours by a towering glass dome. “I tried to let the natural resources of the earth really be the art of the home,” Silverstein says. “With such special elements incorporated throughout, there’s no place in a home that can’t be art in its own right. Every ceiling should be art. There’s no reason your closet can’t be an architectural delight.” Adding flourish to fine architecture, Silverstein collaborated with interior designer Pat Conner and a cadre of artisans from all over the world to showcase his appreciation for classy antiques as well as modern art. A bright impasto painting by Barry Thomas and a kinetic sculpture by David Roy adorn the walls of the main living room. Meanwhile, refurbished iron pendant lamps from old churches illuminate staircases. "I do believe Dr. Silverstein's home is the most elite home in lake communities across the area," says lake community expert in real estate Renee Amey. With his dream home complete, Silverstein has more recently worked to bring another goal to fruition. In September 2015, he became the official corporate sponsor of the 6,000-seat Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence, just down the highway from his medical practice and surgery center where he plans to continue to correct patient’s vision for years to come.

esign features of the Byers residence include a cantilevered roof, expansive windows facing west, clerestory windows throughout, ground-source heating and cooling and a rain screen wall system with a natural cedar plank façade. The low-slung exterior was designed to respond to the Missouri prairie topography and offers a contemporary interpretation of prairiestyle architecture. The home was designed by El Dorado Inc., and Dave Byers acted as the structural engineer and general contractor for his own house.

The Byers family desired an expanse of windows through which to view incoming thunderstorms and stunning sunsets, and this is their favorite feature of the home. To achieve these views the home was situated to mimic the rectangular shape of the lot. The family also desired a safe environment for their disabled son, which was achieved with a courtyard and open spaces. The exterior and interior designs were influenced by midcentury modern design with its clean lines, minimalism, extensive use of glass and open design concepts. Favorite places to shop for interior items include Crate and Barrel, CB2, West Elm, Room and Board and Design Within Reach. A few pieces are authentic and trademarked, while others are reproductions. The design goal for this home was midcentury modern without being midcentury “musty," achieved with the use of neutral colors on large pieces with accessories providing color. 46
