hen I was a child, I believed my dad could make absolutely anything. He was a contactor and electrician by trade, and growing up in a large family, he often was knocking down walls to build on another room or remodel the existing structure to accommodate more people. If my mom could dream it up, my dad could build it. His craftsmanship didn’t stop at remodeling and home repairs. He was constantly making things for my siblings and I to enjoy. My first memory of him constructing a hand made toy was when I was in kindergarten, and I so badly wanted to play the piano. We didn’t have one at the time, so he made me a little keyboard out of wood, and I adored it. We later got a real piano, once they realized I truly loved it, but the memories of playing on that little homemade keyboard has always stuck with me. Probably the most favored and remembered toy that my dad made for the family was an electronic, light-sensored states and capitals learning game. We all thought it was the coolest thing ever created. He continues to build things for all of us from time to time, and has managed to instill a love of craftsmanship in each of us. There is something so refreshing and special about products that are hand-crafted and locally made. The innovation and creativity that an artisan puts in to their craft truly inspires me. We are pleased to share a few great local artisans with you this month for our makers issue, and we hope you enjoy learning a little bit about their story and the products they create, and maybe you’ll discover a new, local product to love.

hris Fahrenholz, DVM is no stranger to the aches and pains of an active life. A veterinarian by trade, she’s been bucked, bitten and trampled by animals of every size and sort. Combined with an enduring love of horseback riding, her lifestyle has always been one that could lead to deteriorating joints. But everyday aches never prepared her for the eventual onset of excruciating—and physically limiting—hip pain.
“The pain I was experiencing came on gradually but quickly made me miserable,” said Fahrenholz. “I tried fighting through it on a daily basis but it was only getting worse and began affecting both my personal and professional life. A longstanding member of Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc. and an orthopedic surgeon
of almost 30 years, Dr. Dugan is among the region’s best and most respected joint replacement specialists. He evaluated Chris and, taking into consideration her active lifestyle and otherwise good health, decided she was an ideal candidate for a hip replacement through the Outpatient Total Joint Program at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter-Lee’s Summit. According to Medical Director Chad McClintick, DO, the Outpatient Total Joint Program at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter-Lee’s Summit places unique emphasis on every patient’s end-to-end
experience, from the moment their procedure is scheduled through the day of surgery and into the days and weeks that follow. Dr. McClintick worked closely with Dr. Dugan and the Outpatient Total Joint staff to prepare Chris for her hip replacement, addressing each of her questions and concerns along the way, and even began teaching her the post-operative physical therapy regiment she would follow. It was also during this time that Chris was introduced to Laurie Clipperton, RN. Clipperton is the dedicated nurse navigator who works exclusively with participants of the Outpatient Total Joint Program and provides them concierge-level service; she began working with Chris as soon as her surgery was scheduled and became an ongoing source of coaching and support. No matter the question or need, Chris had direct access to Clipperton 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With the aid and support of her incredible team, Chris felt fully prepared for surgery when the day arrived. She knew just what to expect, was prepared for the home-based rehabilitation
thanks to the pre physical therapy, and had Clipperton’s cell phone number ready to go, should she need it. The procedure went just as expected and Chris was recuperating at home less than 24 hours later. Now, almost four months removed from her surgery, Chris feels rejuvenated. SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY For many years the SCA athletes in both soccer and football have scheduled their games on Saturday afternoon due to the fact that the school did not have field lights in place. That is not longer the case at SCA. “For our soccer teams, it will allow our Varsity and Junior Varsity matches to be completed without the worry of darkness,” shared SCA Athletic Director Lance Quessenberry. “We also run soccer tournaments that we have had to start during school times to get the matches in before dark. M
any of my favorite childhood memories revolve around Halloween. Not so much the candy (I was a saver, not a binger) but the costumes. If we ever had a store bought costume, it was not one I remember. Growing up, my parents encouraged creativity in all things, and Halloween was no exception. There were wigs, face paint, paper mache heads and often the problem of incorporating long johns at the last minute (it was Iowa, after all). There were certainly favorite costumes, like the furry bunny costume my mom made that was handed down from kid to kid, or the two-person horse costume my best friend and I made out of huge ice cream tubs (I was the hind end). Then there was the mummy costume, where my dad wrapped me in hospital gauze from head to toe, not thinking about the possibility of having to use the restroom. These were certainly not works of art, but the process of making them was full of laughter. Once my husband and I had our own kids, we wanted to provide opportunities for them to create similar memories. I admit, when my kids were really little, and time and energy was at a premium, I welcomed the convenience of party store costumes. When the kids were about 5 and 8, I found a hilarious set of costumes for The Incredibles on-line. It was the perfect number for our family and the kids bought into it immediately. Our debut was at our church's Trunk or Treat event. I remember feeling so foolish stepping out of the car with my spandex super hero suit, but the squeals of laughter and photo requests made it all worthwhile. The whole family loved it, and the kids had more fun staying in character and handing out candy than trunk or treating for themselves.

Each year thereafter, in the beginning of October, the kids and I start brainstorming costume ideas. We work together deciding who will be what, collecting and buying supplies, assembling, fitting and adjusting until everyone is satisfied. There are no patterns involved, just rough sketches and some Pinterest inspirations. Some things I make from scratch, and other pieces we purchase. I am not a great seamstress but have become brave in wielding a glue gun. Sometimes visibility and mobility are compromised, but the kids' joy and pride wearing the costumes outweigh a little discomfort. I found myself looking forward to this time more each year. As a stay-at-home mom, this became a fantastic creative outlet for me that I didn't realize I was missing. I would find myself roaming the aisles of Home Depot and the depths of my garage, trying to re-imagine the ordinary and what I could use to construct each costume. Some were pretty unexpected, like a lamp shade and pool noodle to make the Minion, a deflated basketball for the Alien and a dirt bike helmut to make a Wild Thing head. In the end, it's always a wonder to me that it comes CONTINUED > together in time.

As my kids turn into teenagers, I know their time participating in the family costume is limited. Fortunately, they have developed a "nothing is impossible" attitude, at least in regard to costumes. Already, they are talking about making their own costumes next year, maybe with their friends. My response to them is "You have learned well, young Padawan. Follow the force." This fall, if only for one night, you too can find your inner child, unleash your creativity, and make some lasting memories. To me, this is the real treat of Halloween. had Hickman grew up right here in the Heartland, in Olathe to be exact. As a kid, he dreamed of Royals baseball and one day hitting the ball over the wall in the bottom of the ninth to win the World Series. Baseball was one of his greatest passions. That is why he, like so many other kids growing up in America, and even around the world, found himself on summer days walking to the park with his buddies with his ball, his bat, and his glove, to not only play baseball, but to dream of baseball.
Chad accepts the fact that he probably wont get called up to the big leagues in order to get his chance of hitting that game winning homer, but that hasn’t stopped him from keeping baseball at the heart of what he does. As the owner of Sandlot Goods, in the Crossroads District at 504 E. 18th St., you can see baseball’s influence in everything they make and sell. Once a photographer, Chad was a co-owner of a local studio that had renovated their building to sub-lease office
space to other local artisans. Over time he knew his career was headed in a different direction, and he had built such a great bond with those around him, they began to brainstorm on some new ideas. From those conversations their new business venture was born. Sandlot Goods has a passion for all things Americana, and that is seen in the unique, baseball style stitching in all of their leather goods. From handbags to wallets, journal covers to women’s purses, the unique stitching is seldom seen anywhere else and is a reminder of the nostalgia that is known as our country’s favorite pastime, baseball. The leather used in all of their products comes from Horween Leather and is some of the finest in the world. Horween is based in Illinois and is the same company that provides the leather not only for many gloves used in Major League Baseball, but also for the balls used in the National Football League. They sail around the city and across the country selling crafted goods on a landlocked Sailboat in the shape of their iconic logo which acts as their mobile pop up shop. The Sailboat was built by their devoted followers in the form of a crowdfunding campaign which resulted in the construction and completion of a whimsical day dream realized. or Janet Smith, owning and tending to her herd of 200 goats at Borgman’s Farmstead Dairy means maintaining the legacy of her grandmother, Blanche Borgman, who founded the dairy in 1935. Although the Johnson County Missouri dairy is decades old, Janet and her husband, Randy Smith, took the business in a decidedly new direction when they took over operations in 2006. Today the Smiths pride themselves in being the only Grade-A goat dairy in the Kansas City region and bringing unique culinary goat’s milk offerings to the market, far beyond classic chevre. Janet Smith combines goat’s milk, a splash of vanilla, a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of baking soda in a stainless steel kettle and simmers it at 220 degrees for 14 hours. The result is cajeta, a rich buttery caramel sauce with a touch of tanginess that’s perfect for stirring into coffee, topping desserts or even as a glaze for meat.
Visitors to the Borgman Farms stall at City Market, the Overland Park farmer’s market and select area Hen House markets will find Janet’s culinary creativity on display. Along with cajeta, there is cheesecake in a jar, a creamy herb spread for topping steaks, rich chocolate truffles and salad dressing. The Smiths recently received state and federal grants to help fund their development of an urban creamery in the historic West Bottoms. Although it will be several years before Borgman Farms has a completed creamery in the heart of Kansas City, Smith looks forward to the opportunities it will allow, both for her business to expand, and the opportunity it will create for local farmers with smaller goat herds. The Smiths plan to locally purchase goat’s milk to create a steady fair trade market and expand their production into yogurt and additional snack and dessert products.

hen four-year-old Lucas Bell came home to Lee’s Summit from his native Uganda in 2011, he had some healing to do. His adoptive parents Roger and Erin Bell would provide salve in the form of a loving family, but Erin quickly realized she would also need a skincare solution to soothe the then four-year-old’s parched skin. As a result of the climate change from Africa to Missouri, Lucas’ skin was constantly dry, itchy and cracking. n April 2015, Gina Seibel was riding high on the Royal’s 2014 season and in search of just the right T-shirt to express her love for the boys in blue and their swagger. But she encountered a snag. At 5’10, she found that most of the Royals women’s-fit T-shirts she tried on weren’t comfortable for her body type.So Seibel, a self-professed T-shirt and jeans kind of girl, decided to create her own custom tee. The Original Swagger Shirt was all about comfort, and a longer more relaxed fit, on a soft T-shirt to flatter all body
types. She polled her Facebook friends to inquire if anyone else would be interested in a shirt since she needed to have a minimum of 12 orders to get the design screen printed. Seibel was astounded when she received 60 orders. Seibel licensed her business as KC Swagger in July 2015, and continued to see her business swell, so much that it competed for time with her family and her job as creative director at the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce. While it was difficult for her to step away from her Chamber job

She stands by a ‘no tiny tee’s’ policy, trying out multiple styles and sizes from wholesalers to select the shirts that become her canvas.“I don’t want to have to order a shirt two sizes larger than normal in order for the shirt to fit me how I want it to,” Seibel says. “I design shirts for the normal everyday moms who want to look cute too.” Often, a spark for a design idea begins as Seibel sits coloring with her kids. She takes her sketches and transforms them into digital designs for her commercial vinyl cutter. She then pulls away the vinyl that won’t be a part of the final design and heat presses the final design on the shirts. For larger orders, she works with an area screen printer.

California and dealers up to San Francisco,” Bond says. “My original plan A was to go to work at Disney’s Burbank Studios, but I decided I didn’t want to paint cells all day. Then I went to Hannah Barbera for an interview. Plan B was to be a technical illustrator, and by age 21, I could see the drawings in my mind just by looking at the blueprints.” He opened his pinstriping shop in 1970 amidst a slew of competition, but explained he ran his shop like a business. His proximity to Beverly Hills offered unique opportunity, as did his association with Christy’s of Hollywood. This is where he decided this life of steady hand and creativity was to be his chosen profession. His resume shines like a who’s who, with many bright spots. One was being the first to put a photograph on a T-shirt for the LA Lakers. And meeting George Barris, who built the six original Batmobiles and the Batcycle, was definitely a coo. “I painted those for him,” says Bond. He visited Barbara Streisand’s home to paint her initials on her 1914 Rolls Royce. Also, Vincent Price and Zsa Zsa Gabor utilized his artistic talent, as did Andy Griffith, who he says was incredibly sweet and down to earth. “When he called the house, my wife freaked out,” says Bond. “Jen knew his voice but couldn’t figure out who it was until I said, ‘Hi Andy.’” Why the move to the Midwest? “We lived in a house that was custom built for Doris Day, on ¾ of an acre, with orange and olive groves. I was doing a lot of traveling and thought we needed to go someplace in the middle. Plus, the Northridge earthquake did do a whole lot of damage, which was fixed, but enough is enough. And there was a lot of violence there. I went to Indianapolis for a trade show, and my wife, Jennifer, called a realtor and our house sold and we had four days to find a house! We drove by this house on Colbern Road as the owner was putting the for sale sign out and bought it.” He has shared his imaginative skills at lectures in trade shows across the country, including the Peterson Auto Museum in Los 52

Angeles, and will be lecturing at the Kansas City Automobile Museum in the near future. He is currently publisher/editor of AutoArt International Magazine, which showcases those who excel in this coveted art. He definitely notes that without his wife, Jennifer, of 37 years, he would not be where he is today. “She came into my shop to get her car striped, and I used the money she paid me to take her to dinner that night,” says Bond. “The next day, I wrote her a poem and delivered it to her at work with some roses. She worked at Sweet and Low in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. All the ladies loved it, and she did too!” They have four grown children, which Bond proudly shares, “All the kids have a gift of some kind.” Bond is pleased with the four seasons he and his family experience in the Midwest, however does become dreamy when remembering his surfing days as a youth. Suffice it to say, when the phone rings in his shop, it could be to paint a fire engine, paint a red stripe on a T-bird, personalize the door of a safe or add pizzazz to a Corvette. “I look back over 40 plus years and think of the people who have told me I’ve changed a lot of lives,” Bond says. “It seems when we moved here, we were the pebble that started waves of family to follow us. I also have a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Medicine (University of Washington) and another Master’s degree in Health Services Administration (University of Kansas). I completed my internship and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. My clinical areas of interest are broad and include musculoskeletal medicine, neuropathic pain, spasticity, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dystonias, stroke rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis, nerve and muscle diseases, geriatrics, electrodiagnostic medicine and general rehabilitation medicine. It’s extremely gratifying to take care of people and improve their function. When I am not in clinic, I enjoy tennis, traveling and spending time with my family.

INGREDIENTS | 2 cups unsweetened organic almond milk 1 cup organic pumpkin puree 2 tbsp. almond butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 cup agave nectar (or maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar syrup) 2 tsp. pumpkin spice (or make your own with 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. ginger, pinch ground clove, pinch allspice) 1/2 cup chia seeds Optional Topping: pepitas, chopped walnuts or pecans, shredded coconut and drizzle of honey
EQUIPMENT | Glass bowl, stainless or suitable container for holding at least 4 cups Whisk
INSTRUCTIONS | 1. Pour one cup of the almond milk into your glass bowl and add pumpkin puree. Whisk until the puree is completely dissolved into the milk. 2. Add almond butter, vanilla, agave and pumpkin spice and whisk until incorporated. 3. Add remaining almond milk and begin adding in the chia seeds whisking to incorporate. 4. Let stand for five minutes, and then whisk for one to two minutes to incorporate the chia throughout. 5. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, then remove and whisk again. 6. Chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the pudding to set. If the pudding isn’t thick enough simply add an extra tablespoon or two of chia seeds.
