ADVANCEMENTS IN BONE AND JOINT CARE

Q&A WITH DR. LUCAS RICHIE

An orthopaedic surgeon with Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics, Dr. Richie is at the forefront of technological and biological advancements that enable more successful surgical outcomes and help patients heal more quickly. He is a leader in the field of bioinductive implant technology, a top user of it in Tennessee, and travels the country educating other surgeons on its use.

Q: WHAT IS THE NEXT BIG ADVANCEMENT IN ORTHOPAEDICS?

Dr. Richie: I personally believe the next frontier of orthopedic surgery is biologic augmentation. Essentially, how do we help the patient’s body to heal better, potentially faster, and stronger? I am a big believer in the body’s biological ability. We can fix everybody the same way mechanically, but if the biology does not cooperate, it’s simply not going to heal.

Q: HAVE YOU USED THIS TECHNIQUE ON OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY?

Dr. Richie: I do biological augmentation on Achilles tendons, triceps, quadriceps, rotator cuffs, patellar tendons, etc. The studies show the tendons actually get thicker! We do anything we can do to help the patient to actually heal.

Q: WHAT ABOUT THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY?

Dr. Richie: On the technological front, this is evolving rapidly. We commonly utilize robotic-assisted surgery, which gets the patient’s alignment within the nearest 1° or 1 mm of perfect ensuring safety and allows for decreased postoperative pain. For shoulder replacements, I now use preoperative 3-D planning to help ensure appropriate alignment!

Q: DO THESE BIOLOGIC ADVANCES ALLOW FOR FASTER RECOVERY?

Dr. Richie: YES! Specifically, we can talk about the rotator cuff. We’ve been repairing rotator cuffs for decades. But if I would repair every single rotator cuff the same way, we are definitely going to see some that do not heal because everyone’s biology is different. For partial thickness rotator cuff tears, I have been using the Regeneten Bioinductive Implant to allow for healing with sling times as short as 48 hours, instead of six weeks. It is highly recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and FDA-approved for any tendon or ligament. I see a dramatic decrease in the number of failed surgical procedures following the use of products such as this. Harnessing the power of biological augmentation is something that cannot be left out of our current practice standards.

Q: WHAT IS AN EXCITING TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCE YOU’VE SEEN?

Dr. Richie: Two weeks ago, I participated in an international orthopedic committee where I trialed a new augmented reality guidance system for ACL reconstruction!

Dr. Lucas Richie specializes in arthroscopic surgery, general orthopaedics, sports medicine, and treats conditions or injuries of ankles, hands, knees, shoulders, and wrists. If you’d like to learn more about Dr. Richie, visit tn.hughston.com/richie. Call 615-547-6700 to make an appointment.

Be The Light

This May, we're honored to celebrate the Leading Ladies of Lebanon:  women who are not only rooted deeply in this community, but who are boldly rising and lighting the way for others. These are the women building businesses, pouring into families, leading with faith, giving back in meaningful ways and showing up, day after day, with purpose and heart.

When we say “lighting up Lebanon,” we don’t just mean success. We mean impact. We mean kind ness. We mean resilience. We mean the quiet, behindthe-scenes moments no one sees, as well as the courageous steps forward that inspire an entire community.

As I look across these pages, I see stories of strength, growth and unwavering commitment to something bigger than self. I see women who are cultivating light in their homes, their work and in the lives of those around them. And I’m reminded that when women support women, something truly beautiful happens: we rise together.

This edition is deeply personal to me. As a publisher, a business owner, a mother, a friend—and a woman still growing myself—I understand the seasons of being planted, stretched and called to step into more. And I also know the importance of being surrounded by women who water you, encourage you and remind you of your purpose when you forget.

To the women featured in this edition, thank you for your leadership, your courage and your light. You're shaping Lebanon in ways that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

And to every woman reading this…

You are planted here for a reason.

Your story matters.

Your light is needed.

Keep growing. Keep showing up. Keep shining.

With gratitude and admiration,

May 2026

WHY JUICE? WHY NOT?!

THE ESSENTIAL JUICERY OWNER PROMISES PURE GOODNESS IN EVERY

BOTTLE

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Ashlee Chance isn't taking any chances when it comes to increasing the number of people who know about the health benefits of raw, cold-pressed organic juice beverages.

As owner of The Essential Juicery in Lebanon, Ashlee admits she's always been somewhat of a health enthusiast. However, after her mother was diagnosed with cancer, she was determined to provide her with the best nutrition available. That option, Ashlee assures, came in the form of 'juicing.'

"Nutrients are instantly delivered to the body from cold-pressed juices. Juicing provides a concentrated, easily digestible source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, aiding in nutrient absorption, supporting immune health and increasing energy. It promotes hydration, helps with potential weight loss, supports digestion and can help reduce inflammation," she explains.

Ashlee opened the juicery during 2017, with Heather Landers at Hot Yoga Lebanon allowing her to offer her clients various juices. Wilkie's Outfitters provided her retail space there also. The juicery is now located in the Corn Crib Health Food Store, 1645 West Main St., Ste. #2.

"I'm eternally grateful for all of these business owners for trusting me and my products, and we still, nine years later, provide yogis with fresh juices every week," she says.

The shop's juice is produced by a two-step Triturator Hydraulic press. During the first step, fresh fruits and vegetables are gently ground into a pulp, and then the pulp is pressed in a hydraulic press that releases a high quality juice, full of essential enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

Among the shop's offerings are interesting combinations with fun and lively names, such as The Hulk, Vitality, Majik Potion, The Beet, Green Goddess, The Essentials, Glow, The Slim, Amazing Apple, Celery Juice, Carrot Craze as well as Ginger & Lemon Shots.

Ashlee says from time to time it's good to give one's body a break from everyday toxins. Through a periodic juice cleanse, she adds that it's beneficial to flood a body's organs with pure nutrition. "A cleanse also gives your digestive system a break, and this allows your body to repair damaged cells. The nutrients are delivered quickly and therefore your body can begin to feel energized

and rejuvenated. Cleansing can also shed waste and provide metal clarity."

To prepare for a cleanse, Ashlee suggests consulting with a medical professional and then eliminating processed foods, caffeine, alcohol and sweets a couple of days before beginning. During the cleanse, drink plenty of water. Whereas cleanse orders at the Essential shop originally were taken for select days with corresponding pickups, she says she now presses every day so she can offer most cleanses every day.

"Juice is one tool in your toolbox to lead a healthy lifestyle," reminds this local wellness-driven operator.

In 2026, juicing remains a highly popular trend, especially to support on-the-go lifestyle routines. Juice blends that promote skin glow and vitality are frequently sought after as more health-conscious consumers continue to seek simple, authentic products.

Ashlee says they also offer gift certificates that can be ordered online, and delivered to the purchaser or mailed directly to the recipient. "Fresh-pressed, handcrafted juice would make wonderful Mother's Day presents," she quips.

Legacy CULTIVATING A

ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE | PHOTOGRAPHY
BY THE GARDEN CLUB

Members of the Year Round Garden Club have planted seeds with purpose for more than 70 years. As the longest active gardening club in the community, the club’s mission to generate interest is still just as relevant today as it was during its founding in 1949.

One of the group’s longtime members and former president, Janet McCluskey, believes the club remains pertinent, “because we cultivate our individual values of gardening with ongoing efforts to improve our planet and environment through timely programs and practices.”

Members state they know every seed is an opportunity to make a positive difference.

The club’s adopted projects within the community showcase their commitment to preserving the beauty of Lebanon and their heart for its people. The Year Round Garden Club tends to the Fite-Fessenden House, the Empower Me Center and a rain garden in Fiddler’s Grove at the fairgrounds. Each year, on Mother’s Day Weekend, they host a fundraiser to support these local projects at Valley Growers Garden Center.

Their impact is also recognized on a national level. Every two years, the club's members host a nationally judged show, and they received an award for their 2024 flower show. Lebanon will have a chance to experience one of these excellent exhibitions in June at the historic Mitchell House. The 25-member club will curate 75-plus horticultural exhibits, 20 original floral designs and two educational entries that reflect the different chapters of the home’s history and its impact in Lebanon.

Undergirding the diligent efforts of Year Round Garden Club are long-lasting friendships. “Our common values are the base of our organization, but it’s our friendships that hold us together as a club,” Janet says, highlighting the power of community on a shared mission.

There are longtime Year Round members, and some are second-generation members, a testament to the legacy they’re building. This group's combined friendships and impressive gardening skills will be on full display June 4 from 1-3 p.m. at the Mitchell House during a show that's free to attend.

Leading Ladies of Lebanon

THESE LOCAL WOMEN ILLUMINATE WHAT IT MEANS TO SERVE AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT BRADSHAW PHOTOGRAPHY

Heather Jones Landers

Owner/lead instructor, Hot Yoga Lebanon

She was born a fraternal twin, and her sister remains her best friend—something for which she’s incredibly grateful. She’s a graduate of Cumberland University, where she earned degrees in business, marketing and accounting. Prior to becoming a yoga instructor, she worked as an accountant for several local businesses.

Heather and her husband, Greg, will celebrate 24 years of marriage this November. They have one son, Chadwick Wilson, who’s named in honor of her late brother, Chad. He attends Friendship Christian School.

WHAT COMMUNITY IMPACT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE?

“I hope to leave a lasting impact by showing the Lebanon and Wilson County community how deeply I care for and support them. My goal is to create a space where individuals feel seen, heard and valued, no matter where they are in life. It’s truly a privilege to serve this community, and I’m committed to never taking that responsibility for granted.”

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED; HOW IT SHAPED YOU:

“One of the most meaningful pieces of advice I’ve received is to stay grounded in faith and trust the process, even when the path is uncertain. This perspective has helped me navigate both personal and professional challenges with resilience, patience and a sense of purpose.”

WOMEN WHO’VE INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST; WHY?

“The women who influenced me most are my grandmothers, my mother and my mother-in-law. My grandmothers were hardworking women who prioritized their faith and families, setting a strong foundation for future generations. My mother and mother-in-law have exemplified unconditional love, grace and forgiveness. Their strength and perseverance continue to inspire me, especially during challenging times.”

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“I would encourage my younger self to love and trust who you are. Your body is strong, capable and created to do hard things. Stay rooted in your values, cherish your relationships and approach life with intention, because every decision matters. Most importantly, remain grounded in faith; it will guide you through every season of life.”

DO YOU HAVE

A MORNING/DAILY RITUAL FOR SUCCESS?

“My daily routine has evolved over the years, especially after becoming a mother. Many mornings begin early, often teaching a 5 a.m. class, followed by time at home caring for our family and preparing our son for school. On mornings I’m not teaching, I focus on planning classes and setting the tone for the day ahead. I approach each day with intention, taking it one step at a time.”

Sarah Haston

This area leader cares deeply about this community and its residents. Everything she does in economic and community development aims to create opportunities and enhance the quality of life. “It’s fulfilling work, and I’m proud to help shape Lebanon’s future. However, the job I’m most proud of is being a mom to Charlie Mae and Addison,” she clarifies.

WHAT COMMUNITY IMPACT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE?

“I aim to leave the Lebanon community stronger, more connected and better prepared for long-term success. This involves supporting sustainable growth, creating opportunities for local businesses to thrive, and ensuring development still preserves the feeling of home. If we can build a community where people are proud to live, work and invest, then I’ve achieved my goal.”

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED; HOW IT SHAPED YOU:

“‘Be consistent and do what you say you’re going to do.’ It sounds simple, but it has shaped my approach to leadership and relationships. Trust develops over time, and consistency is what builds it. In this role, that’s everything, whether you’re working with businesses, partners or the public.”

WOMEN WHO’VE INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST; WHY?

“I’ve been fortunate to learn from strong, driven women who lead with confidence and integrity. The women who’ve influenced me most are those who show up, do the work and support others along the way. They’ve demonstrated leadership doesn’t need to be loud to be impactful; it just needs to be steady and genuine. My grandmother taught me that feeling gratitude without expressing it is like buying a gift and not giving it. I always want to make sure I thank everyone who has helped me along the way.”

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“Don’t rush the process or get out of the fast lane. Every experience, whether good or challenging, is building something in you that you’ll need later. Trust that growth takes time, and don’t hesitate to step into opportunities even if you don’t feel 100% ready. Everyone has to start somewhere, and perfection definitely isn’t the starting point.”

DO YOU HAVE A MORNING/DAILY RITUAL FOR SUCCESS?

“First, I don’t check my cell phone in the morning until I’m ready to leave the house, and I like to see natural light within the first 15 minutes of waking up. I also enjoy a cup of coffee. I prefer to start my day with a clear plan and prioritized list. Spending a few minutes in the morning organizing what needs to be done helps me stay focused and intentional throughout the day, especially in a role where priorities can change quickly. My daily routine varies, so knowing what absolutely must be done that day is very helpful.”

Suanne Bone Leeper

This community advocate is thankful for family, friends and a loving community that supports the work of Our Sisters Keeper and many other nonprofits in the county. She’s also grateful for a loving and supportive husband, Tim.

WHAT COMMUNITY IMPACT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE?

“I believe in second chances and being a champion for others. It’s important to invite others in and make them feel at ease. I hope prison and jail ministries continue, and I hope our community is guided by purpose in this ministry.”

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED; HOW HAS IT SHAPED YOU:

“My dad always told my brother and I to have a firm foundation and leave the world better than we found it. This advice guides me in prioritizing activities based on what best matches my values.”

WOMEN WHO’VE INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST; WHY?

“My grandmother, Margaret Bone, for living out her faith, showing kindness and Southern hospitality to those around her, and leading with a gentle spirit.

My mother, Patricia Bone, for her unwavering devotion and love of family, her work ethic, lively spirit and love of music.

My friend, Beth Prichard Geer, for giving me a chance with a second career, teaching me that work families are necessary, and introducing me to cultures different from my own.”

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“Find balance in all aspects of your life, with family, friends, career and civic responsibilities.”

DO YOU HAVE A MORNING/DAILY RITUAL FOR SUCCESS?

“Early morning workouts, reading a devotional or inspirational message and a few minutes of quiet time.”

Rev. Regina Girten

Living in Wilson County is truly one of the greatest honors of Regina’s life. She asserts that she loves the community deeply and feels grateful for every opportunity to serve here. “I look forward to how God will continue to guide that calling as the seasons of life change. And at the center of it all is my family; raising my girls and sharing this life with my husband, Jeff, is a gift I don’t take for granted,” she adds.

WHAT COMMUNITY IMPACT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE?

“I hope to help connect people to the real needs within our community in ways that inspire meaningful action. At the heart of my work is a deep desire to serve others, ensuring every person is treated with dignity, respect and fairness. If people remember anything about me, I hope it’s that I genuinely care about our community and am committed to helping it become a place where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to thrive.”

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED; HOW IT SHAPED YOU:

“When I was younger, my Uncle James told me to find what makes my heart burn with passion and to do that every single day. My Aunt Harriet would always say if there’s no fear involved, then it’s probably not worth doing. They were

both incredibly inspiring to me, and their words have really stayed with me. Together, that advice has shaped how I live and lead; it keeps me focused on using my gifts to meet real needs in my community, even when it feels uncertain or out of comfort zone. And it’s also given me a deep desire to bring others along with me, so we can make a difference together.”

WOMEN WHO'VE INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST; WHY?

“I’ve been shaped by so many strong, loving women. My mother and Aunt Harriet were especially formative, modeling strength, compassion and resilience. My mother-inlaw and sisters-in-law have shown me what it means to love your family well and be fully present in those roles.

I’m also deeply grateful for women who've walked alongside me: my college friends, “The Right Girls,” my childhood best friend Lindsey, my friend Emma, my sister, and my local best friend, Taryn. They’ve encouraged me to stay true to who I am through every season.

Each of these women has shown me how to work hard, pursue your dreams and stand firm in what you believe. But just as importantly, they’ve reminded me that joy, laughter and time with the people you love matter most, and that who you are is far more important than what you do.”

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“To give myself more grace, to let go of the need to be perfect in every area of life. That’s actually something my husband still reminds me of today. I’d also say to trust that the deepest desires in your heart will come in time. Keep working hard, but don’t be so hard on yourself—you’ll always be your own toughest critic–and it will all come in time. It’s okay to pause, breathe, and take a break along the way.”

DO YOU HAVE A MORNING/DAILY RITUAL FOR SUCCESS?

“As a mom of two young girls, mornings can feel a little rushed—and I’ll admit, I’m not naturally a morning person. But I try to start each day grounded by spending time in prayer and meditation to center myself. There’s almost always a cup of coffee involved, too. And on my best days, fitting in hot yoga really sets the tone and helps me show up at my best.”

THE Art Of CELEBRATION

Nicole Event Decor Plus Will & Co Event Rentals: Timeless Experiences For Life's Significant Moments

As a full-service event design and planning company, Nicole Event Decor offers everything from venue selection and floral design to lighting, styling and full coordination. Owner Yadira Gonzalez crafts each celebration to reflect every client’s unique vision, regardless of whether the location is a large facility or someone’s backyard.

“We understand that marking life’s milestones is about more than just throwing a party. It’s about creating an atmosphere of celebration and joy that leaves a lasting impression,” says Yadira. “That’s why we enjoy catering to a range of events, including quinceañeras, weddings, birthday parties, baptisms, graduations and more. We actually excel in the art of quinceañera designing and planning.”

Sister business Will & Co Event Rentals, also owned and operated by Yadira, features a fully stocked showroom with event essentials including candles, lighting, tents, dance floors and everything needed to bring an event to life.

Yadira says their process begins with a personal consultation, during which they take the time to understand a client’s vision for their special occasion. They then create a customized design proposal detailing every aspect of an event.

“I work with many people who don’t know where to start. But they usually have a dream. For brides, they may’ve known since they were little girls what they wanted their wedding to look like for their own Cinderella moment. So, we start with desired colors and venue, then discuss the vision and how to make that come alive,” Yadira explains.

She says most area venues should be booked one to two years in advance.

“We pride ourselves on meticulous coordination. Our team flawlessly executes every detail, ensuring a seamless flow of events and leaving clients and attendees to savor every moment without worry. We specialize in thoughtful design. From elegant weddings to vibrant birthday parties, our creative touch adds an aesthetic charm that makes your celebration truly unforgettable,” promises Yadira.

Coordination is 101% necessary because there are 101 things that can go wrong at events, according to this experienced event planner. “We’ve had events close to perfection, however, unexpected things can happen, such as someone forgetting a critical

piece of clothing, a cake gets dropped or someone faints. This is why working with a skillful planner is important because we have existing relationships with vendors and the power of vendors can help fix or rescue events when unplanned things happen.”

Yadira says her business enabled her to learn about an array of traditions within a variety of cultures, such as:

• Indian three-day weddings during which the groom’s family simulates “securing/buying” the bride.

• Samolian weddings attended only by females so they can remove hijabs (scarves) to uncover their heads, and with no cellphones allowed; anyone supporting or working these weddings must also be female.

• Mexican traditional dances that last into the wee hours of the morning.

• African American gatherings with changes of clothes.

• Romanian weddings during which the groom’s family is expected to keep track of the bride’s whereabouts as she traditionally disappears from the wedding venue and must be found by the groom’s side. Locally, this typically means the bride vanishes to somewhere in Nashville.

• Arab weddings with females located on one side of the venue and males on the opposite side.

• Nigerian weddings that embrace spicy foods and brightly colored gowns worn by the bridal party and guests.

The company’s dozen employees work from their Nicole Event Decor and Will & Co Event Rentals base in Lebanon at 713 E. Main St. They typically handle 120 events per year.

“I monitor trends in special events, and keep up with what’s going on in draperies and favorite foods. I’m always adding new elements to my event designs and planning,” assures Yadira. “I love those first moments when people walk into events, look around and exclaim ‘wow,’ and often start crying.”

Yadira Gonzalez

As a young girl, Yadira recalls being the one in her family who made sure all holiday decorations were taken care of and meal tables were set just right. Previously, in her adult life, she worked as a paralegal until 2008, however, creative celebration concepts continued to dance through her mind. After posting pictures on social media regarding how she decorated for her son's birthday, people contacted her to ask if she could create special events for them. As of September 2026, she will be observing her own celebration of the 10th anniversary of her party planning business Nicole Event Decor. Additionally, she's operated Will & Co Event Rentals since August 2023.

LEBANON CITY LIFESTYLE ASKED MISS TENNESSEE ZOE SCHEIDERICH AND MOTHER CORTISSA SCHEIDERICH ABOUT HOW THEY NAVIGATE LIFE TOGETHER

BEHIND THE CROWN: A MOTHERDAUGHTER BOND

This Mother’s Day is especially unique for Lebanon residents Miss Tennessee Zoe Scheiderich and her mom, Cortissa Scheiderich, as they end an era with Zoe concluding her reign in June.

“This past year we’ve gone through so much. As we move on to an even better chapter in life, I’m reminded how grateful I am for my mom,” says Zoe. “There’s no way anything in my life would be possible without her.”

In a personal note to her mother via Lebanon City Lifestyle, Zoe stated: “You’re so classy and graceful, you bring style into everything you do. You’re leaving impossibly big shoes to fill for whoever becomes the next Miss Tennessee mom. So many women my age tell me how much they admire or want to be like you. Nobody can ‘do it all’ but you’re as close as it can get. Thank you for always being my cheerleader and my referee, for always stepping up and supporting my endeavors. You show what it means to lead a Godly life of grace, humility and ambition. I love you, Mom.”

While Cortissa admits the pageant era has been exhausting, frustrating and disappointing at times, she’s quick to state it also was exciting, surprising, thrilling, rewarding and oh, so much fun.

“Zoe and I both caught the pageant bug, discovering a mutual love for pageantry, which increased our mother-daughter bond,” explains Cortissa. “I’ve poured many hours into interview prep, we’ve traveled together countless hours across the state for appearances and preliminary competitions, even across state lines for pageant prep. I’ve made plenty of late-night and last-minute runs for forgotten items, supplements for sickness, snacks and energy drinks. I’ve shared ideas that weren’t embraced right away, but many that were.”

This honed-in mother says it took lots of collaboration, many phone calls and networking conversations to open doors of opportunity for Zoe. “With all the sacrifice has come the tremendous satisfaction of seeing Zoe thrive, excel and have an incredible impact on many young women on this journey,” she adds.

“Seeing my daughter perform on the Miss America stage was an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Cortissa says it’s been a tremendous joy to help Zoe discover new ways in which she can use her strengths and talents. “It’s not always been easy to invest the amount of time needed to support her, because we have four other children. Without the help of my husband, it wouldn’t be possible. Our family makes sacrifices to support each other.”

She says she reminds Zoe that God’s plans and timing are perfect. To make it all work, Cortissa says she and Zoe talk through options with each “seeking to understand, not just to be understood,” and they pray to seek wisdom.

Their tips in enhancing mother-daughter relationships are:

1. Spend intentional time together just to enjoy each other’s company and learn about each other.

2. Listen more than advising.

3. Practice mutual respect.

4. Humbly consider others and their interests more highly than yourself.

Zoe says Cortissa was her first cheerleader and not her first critic. “It wasn’t until later in life I realized how incredibly crucial that is.”

From being a longtime dancer and now “a pageant girl,” Zoe’s seen how many kinds of mother/daughter relationships react to stress, victory and loss. “Every time, I become more grateful for the mother God gave me. There’s something so special about having your mom be the first one to tell you that you’re beautiful... smart...talented.”

Zoe confirms her parents never minded what her dreams or aspirations were, but whatever she  decided, she’d “better be great.”

“We allowed Zoe to live away from home for four years to pursue professional classical ballet training. I was asked many times how I was able to do that. My answer was: I follow God’s plan for her life and not my own. I don’t try to fit her into a conventional safe mold or vicariously live through her,” says Cortissa.

“A healthy relationship also looks like not just encouraging and lifting up to be liked by your daughter, but sharing tough truths we know will build their character.”

Because this mother-daughter team has a fairly open relationship, they understand as much as they work beautifully together, they embrace each others’ unique decisions and assignments. Cortissa says, “My job is to be in the background teaching, encouraging, guiding and correcting for her to be the very best she can.

Since Cortissa suggested Zoe try the Miss America opportunity, Zoe says her mother went above and beyond with keeping her on track with planning appearances, prep and social media. Zoe adds that while Cortissa was actively involved, she didn’t cross into being overbearing.

Zoe says she’s witnessed various mother-daughter dynamics in the pageant environment, with the most common ones being “The Gilmore Girls” (friendship-based, even to the point of no boundaries); “The Coach” (relationship centered around child’s success in said competition); or “Amazing Moms” (conduct themselves as contestants’ second moms).

With each Miss Tennessee being unique, Zoe says every contestant winner needs a different type of support. “I would advise any pageant mom to remember you both are in this together, but this is still her year. Being Miss Tennessee is an opportunity to increase independence, organizational skills and overall growth. The best thing a mother can do is be a solid rock their daughter can fall back on when things get overwhelming or when they need extra support.”

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

BERRY BRUSCHETTA

A RECIPE FROM A CUP FULL OF SASS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY TINNIN

This Berry Bruschetta is a delightful twist on the classic bruschetta that we all love. This version uses fruit, bringing a sweet element to the traditionally savory dish. With the use of fresh berries, cream cheese, delicious fruit spread, crumbled cheese, and fresh rosemary, it is the perfect addition to your next spring event. This simple, yet beautiful appetizer could be enjoyed at your next brunch, shower or Mother’s Day celebration. But let’s be honest—you don’t need an excuse to enjoy this delectable dish!

INGREDIENTS:

• 12 baguette slices

• Extra virgin olive oil (for brushing)

• 4 oz cream cheese

• 1/4 cup Fruit and Honey Triple Berry Spread (or any fruit spread of your choice)

• 1/3 cup fresh strawberries, sliced

• 1/3 cup fresh blueberries

• 2 oz fruit cheese (such as Wensleydale with Autumn Fruit), crumbled

• Fresh rosemary for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Lightly brush the front and back of the baguette slices with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

3. Toast baguette slices in the oven for 3-5 minutes or until lightly toasted.

4. Once the baguette slices are cool, spread a generous layer of cream cheese over each slice.

5. Add the fruit spread on top of the cream cheese.

6. Add sliced strawberries and a few blueberries, allowing the vibrant colors to pop. (A great place to find fresh fruit is our local staple, Crystal & Rich’s Produce.)

7. Crumble the fruit cheese over the top for an added layer of richness and depth.

8. Garnish with fresh Rosemary if desired.

9. Serve and enjoy!
