Servant Hearts
As we turn the page to our June Men’s Issue, I keep coming back to one simple thought: real influence isn’t always loud. Often, it’s found in the men quietly showing up day after day for their families, businesses, employees, churches, schools, neighbors, and community.
This month, we’re honored to spotlight a group of men who are helping shape the future of Lebanon—not simply through titles or success, but through character, consistency, and the way they lead others along the way.
In a world that often celebrates highlight reels, this issue is about something deeper. It’s about servant leadership. Integrity. Mentorship. Hard work. Faith. Sacrifice. Vision. And the understanding that true impact is built over time— through the seeds we plant and the lives we touch along the journey.
As a publisher, one of my favorite parts of this work is getting to sit across the table from people with incredible stories—stories rooted right here in our hometown. This month reminded me again that Lebanon is filled with men who are not only building businesses and organizations, but also building people. Men who are coaching ball teams after long workdays, supporting local nonprofits, mentoring younger generations, lifting up their communities, and leading with humility when no one is watching.
That kind of influence matters.
Inside these pages, you’ll meet men from many different walks of life and industries, but they all share a common thread: they understand that success means very little if you’re not using it to serve others.
I also want to say thank you to the wives, families, teams, and communities standing beside these men. Leadership is rarely a solo journey, and behind every impactful story are people helping carry the weight, cheer them on, and keep them grounded.
Here’s to the men leading with strength, wisdom, generosity, and heart—and to leaving a legacy that reaches far beyond themselves.
And lastly, thank you to all the special men in my life...My husband, my Dad, my Father-in-law and our 4 sons. You are so loved and I am grateful for your servant hearts!

ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MCLEMORE RESORT
McLemore Resort sits atop the edge of Lookout Mountain and boasts unforgettable scenic views. Whether you’re taking a dip in the infinity pool or putting on the 18th hole of their Highlands Golf Course, Cloudland lives up to its name.
Your next men’s getaway isn’t as far away as you think. Less than a three-hour drive from Lebanon, McLemore Resort offers a luxurious golfing trip you won’t forget. The Georgia resort is home to three different worldclass courses that overlook McLemore Cove and the Cumberland Plateau, upscale on-site dining options, a full-service spa, an infinity pool, and quality rooms and suites for every need.
On your visit, you’ll find The Highlands 18-hole course with a dramatic cliff-edge landscape. It landed a spot on Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Courses to Play in America”, making it a must-see visual golf destination. The Keep is a recently opened 18-hole course that adds more expansive mountain views while you hone your golf game. Both courses were expertly designed by renowned architects, Bill Bergin and Rees Jones, ensuring a high-quality experience on every hole. McLemore also offers a 6-hole short course, The Cairn, designed by Bill Bergin, with a view of the striking 18th hole on the Highlands Course.
An exceptional golf experience is matched by the amenities within the resort. Cloudland at McLemore offers a state-of-the-art fitness center that’s open 24 hours a day with all the equipment you need to get a good workout in. Whether you’re recovering from a long day working on your swing or a visit to the gym, a trip to the Selah Spa provides ultimate recovery and relaxation, with massages, steam rooms, saunas, and more. Or, you can take a dip in the cliffside infinity pool and take time to “float among the clouds,” and grab a cocktail and bar bite from the Skyside lounge while enjoying panoramic mountain views.
There are ample elevated dining options within the resort. The Pocket Cafe is a coffee shop that will give you your morning boost before hitting the courses. At Croft, there are refined options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as hand-crafted cocktails you can enjoy throughout the day. The Auld Alliance offers a French Country cuisine with a twist for an upscale evening dinner experience. Executive Chef Dustin Willett
oversees the four distinctive restaurants and brings over two decades of expertise to Cloudland at McLemore, which shines through in each signature dish.
The adventure doesn’t stop at the resort. Built To Influence
Meet the Men Shaping Lebanon with Intentionality, Integrity, and Generosity
ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT BRADSHAW PHOTOGRAPHY
BEN SPURLOCK
CO-OWNER OF SOUTHEAST IMPRESSIONS, CO-OWNER OF THE SHIRT BUS
Ben Spurlock was born and raised in Lebanon. He shares two boys with his wife, Maggie, and you’ll often catch them eating out during the week. He says, “Everyone has embraced us and our kids and it really just feels like family everywhere we go.”
He envisions Lebanon as his forever home and wants to make a difference. One of the ways he’s making a positive impact is through employment opportunities. He employs over 45 people and has always worked with halfway houses, rehabs, and other organizations to provide jobs for people seeking second chances.
On how he views success and influence: “Young Ben would tell you success was working and running a successful company. Today, success to me is having some freedom in a schedule that allows me to spend time with my wife and kid.”
One of the greatest lessons Ben’s learned is that life is short. He says, “Enjoy the times with friends and family.”
While he hopes to make an impact in the community, he wants to set an example for his kids that anything is possible when you work hard to achieve your goals.
Kevin New’s journey in Lebanon began in 1987. He packed up tools in his truck, $240 in hand, and made the long drive from Houston. “I was nine hours from home and didn’t know a single person. What I found was incredible generosity. The people of Wilson County welcomed me and helped me get started. Lebanon reminded me of the giving spirit I grew up around in Texas—it felt like home.”
That spirit of generosity is something he’s passionate about paying forward. After rising early to take meetings with company project managers, he turns his attention to organizations he’s involved with. “My wife and I are currently serving as chairs for Dinner in the Vines through the Joe Beretta Heart Foundation, and I also sit on the foundation’s board. Supporting that mission is something I care deeply about.”
KEVIN NEW PRESIDENT OF PR SERVICES
“
I was nine hours from home and didn’t know a single person. What I found was incredible generosity. The people of Wilson County welcomed me and helped me get started. Lebanon reminded me of the giving spirit I grew up around in Texas— it felt like home.
When asked if his definition of success has changed over time, he said, “Absolutely. I’ve been semi-retired since I was 40, and that shift changed everything. My success is a direct reflection of my team—without them, none of this would be possible. What success means to me now is having the time and ability to give back, whether that’s financially or through service. Being able to support causes and people…is what I value most today.”
He’s learned a lot throughout his career. The greatest lesson? “Don’t be afraid to take risks. Step out, try something new—and always help someone in need.”
His contributions to Lebanon and beyond are manifold, but when asked about legacy, he’d most like to be remembered as “someone with strong conviction and a foundation of faith.”
NICK HAYS
OWNER OF SPORTS WORLD
Spring is a busy time for Nick Hays. As the owner of Sports World, his job kicks into high gear once youth sports leagues start up on top of school business. He says in this season that, “We are putting some extra hours in for sure.”
Outside of work, he spends time with his wife, Brandy, and their three children: Brody (21), Cooper (19), and Hadley (16). His oldest coaches middle school baseball, and his youngest plays volleyball, so games and tournaments often fill their weekends.
He says Lebanon is a special community. “The people here seem to go out of their way to help each other, support schools and youth sports, or events, or whatever is going on…People genuinely care about the town, what is happening here, and about each other.” He experienced this support firsthand as people showed up for him and his family over the years, asking if they needed anything and always offering a helping hand.
It’s important to him to offer that same support. “I try to just do my small part of spreading the word that we have a pretty special community here, and also pitch in when I can to help these teams, schools, clubs, etc., just like people helped my kids.” He also serves in the community through his role on the Lebanon City Planning Commission.
His definition of success and influence has changed over time. Where he once viewed success as money-oriented, he now sees it as family and service-oriented. “Don't get me wrong, everyone needs money, but now I think providing for my family, doing a good job in my business, helping out when I can, and having more time with the family is enough, and what I focus on.”
One of the greatest lessons he’s learned and wants to pass on is the importance of honesty. “Things happen in business and in life, nobody is perfect, sometimes you just have to say I messed up, I'm sorry, let's fix it.”
On legacy, he says, “I think I just hope people remember me as a pretty good guy.”
JOEY CLARK
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS, CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY
Joey Clark has a full schedule. He’s passionate about serving the community through his role at Cumberland University, as a member of the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors, and as Vice Chair of the Chamber’s Government Relations Committee.
In addition to his work at the university and alongside the Chamber, Joey enjoys spending time with friends and family. He’s also gotten involved with Stage Local, participating in “The Wizard of Oz” last year with more shows on the roster. “Being in a show again as an adult was challenging and exciting. You are never too old to be vulnerable, step out of your comfort zone, and do something you love.”
When asked what Lebanon means to him, he said, “Lebanon is home, and I don’t just mean the city, but the community, the people, and the memories made and life lived here. This home has raised me, supported me, challenged me, encouraged me, and, honestly, set the example and standard for who I am today.”
His view of influence is guided by a personal philosophy: Significance over Success. “It’s not about what I have but what I can do for those around me that matters…Significance requires you to be present in life, not only in the big moments but in the little moments too, to listen when it may not be easy or comfortable, and problem solve while putting the needs of others first.”
One of the greatest lessons he’s learned is that “Life is not something you can win, but it is something you can enjoy. You don’t have to have the answers to take the next step…There is so much in life that we can’t plan for or anticipate, but we can’t be stagnant. We have to be bold, courageous, and if we fall or fail, we have to get up and try again.”
Joey hopes his legacy is rooted in thoughtfulness. “I firmly believe that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. I want to be remembered for caring deeply.”
Called To Serve
A SERVANT'S HEART, A CRAFTSMAN'S HANDS
ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE

SHAWN, YOU’VE SERVED THE COMMUNITY FOR OVER 20 YEARS THROUGH THE JEWELERS AND HUSHPIGGIES BBQ. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR HEART FOR GIVING BACK, AND HOW DOES THAT MISSION SHAPE THE WAY YOU WORK?
“13 years with my former employer gave me the opportunity to grow my involvement in the community by also being their brand ambassador. When I had the chance to open my own store, the same community was there to welcome me with open arms. I’ve always been told, ‘take care of the ones who take care of you.’ With that, we’ve tried to be very aware of why our business thrives and give back to the community that serves us so well!”
Shawn and Bob Black, Founders of One Hand Up
Shawn Smith, owner of The Jewelers and Hushpiggies
AT THE JEWELERS AND THROUGH MY HUSHPIGGIES BRAND, SUCCESS IS BUILDING REAL RELATIONSHIPS, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OTHERS, AND HELPING PEOPLE WIN.
YOU CO-FOUNDED ONE HAND UP WITH BOB BLACK. CAN YOU SHARE THE HEART BEHIND THAT INITIATIVE, HOW IT CAME TO LIFE, AND THE IMPACT YOU HOPE IT MAKES?
“Back to the ‘we can’t give to everything.’ We saw a need where many want to give but aren’t financially able to give a lot, so they often feel like their donation won’t make an impact. This was the foundation for One Hand Up. A small donation, multiplied over hundreds of givers, makes a huge impact. We’ve donated almost 100k in 3 years to local nonprofits, with momentum growing and no signs of slowing down.”
YOUR RECENT BBQ COMPETITION—FEATURED ON AMERICAN COUNTRY NETWORK—IS SUCH A FUN AND EXCITING MILESTONE! HOW DID THAT OPPORTUNITY COME ABOUT, AND HOW DOES IT TIE INTO YOUR PASSION FOR BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH FOOD, COMMUNITY, AND STORYTELLING?
“I was called by a great friend and another leader in our business community, Nancy Baker, who said she had an opportunity for me to compete and showcase my Hushpiggies brand. I was surrounded by people who have the same love for food as I do…Food brings people together. It also evokes so many memories. From church ‘dinner on the ground’ to backyard barbecues, it’s something that almost everyone can relate to.”
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO LEAD WITH A SERVANT’S HEART?
“Success for me isn’t just measured in sales or growth— it’s measured in people. At The Jewelers and through my Hushpiggies brand, success is building real relationships, creating opportunities for others, and helping people win… Leading with a servant’s heart means putting people first every time.”

Strength to Rise
How Sam Pfister Stepped Into His True Calling
Sam Pfister often has early mornings. On coaching days, he’s out of the house before 5 a.m. to get to the gym for classes and focus on business tasks. He enjoys the mornings and evenings he spends with his wife and son (born in September of 2025), taking care of their 12 chickens, or decompressing with a history book.
As Owner and Head Coach, Pfister knew Rise Strength and Performance was a calling long before its founding in May of 2022. He’d always felt a desire to own a gym, but didn’t think of it as a realistic job opportunity, so he delved into politics—but the desire continued to grow.
“After college, I worked in Washington, DC for ten years, starting out on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide, then at a think tank, and wrapping up with the Illinois Governor. When he lost his re-election in 2018, I had had enough of politics and DC and was ready to pursue what I felt was my gifting and calling—Coaching Weight Training.”
With politics in the rearview, Pfister interned with George Washington University’s Strength and Conditioning Department, assisting with Division I athletics, and then went on to work at a strength and conditioning gym. It took hard work and sacrifice as he worked several side hustles to make ends meet, but he continued to pursue the call on his life.
ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SAM PFISTER
Just as he was ready to take his coaching career full-time, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and he “went from six jobs to basically no jobs. But I kept on coaching.” He moved to Nashville in December of 2020 and started coaching out of his garage and offering mobile services. As his clientele grew, one mentioned that a space was available in Lebanon. Pfister visited the location, prayed for direction, and signed a lease the next day—the beginning of Rise.
For Pfister, Rise Strength and Performance isn’t simply a place to get fit—it’s a ministry that equips people to show up to their lives with confidence. He’d seen firsthand the impact a gym could have. “I loved what the gym did for people—it helped them have a ‘haven’ from the craziness of life, it helped them reduce anxiety or depression (something I’ve long battled), and is a place to have community where everyone is equal…”
That’s why Rise is unique from other gym or training experiences. Classes are capped at six members per coach, and every program is
tailored to the individual with intention. “Our members are like family to us, and we help people move better, feel better, and live a more full life through strength training.”
Pfister’s experience with owning a business has taught him a lot. He says it pushes him to be better and take ownership of decisions and results. And when he hits setbacks? He’s learned to recognize that “Setbacks happen FOR ME, not TO ME. I can either grow or groan.” He stresses that setbacks in life, business, or fitness teach you something valuable.
For client experience, he says, “I want Rise clients to not just feel supported in the gym, but I want them to be confident in their daily lives. Everyone struggles with self-doubt. Doing something physically demanding helps quiet that negative voice in your head, which lets you live life more fully—ready to serve others with your gifts and talents.”

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST
Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short
Creative Director: Jen Birn
Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill
Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX
MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.
After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.
Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?
A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When in all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”
THE QUIET STANDARD:
MIKE JOHNSON
“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson
Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

Pickle In A
ARTICLE BY PAULI REEP
PICKLE-BRINED CHICKEN WINGS SOAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE.
I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!
Pickle Juice Brined Wings
INGREDIENTS
• 2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drumettes)
• Pickle juice - enough to cover wings
• 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt
• ¼ teaspoon pepper
• 6 tablespoons butter
• A few dashes of hot sauce
• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.
2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.
3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.
4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Mix well.
5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don’t have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.
6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture. Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.
Alabama White BBQ Sauce
INGREDIENTS
• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s)
• ¼ cup water
• ¼ cup white wine vinegar
• 1 tablespoon pepper, coarsely ground
• 1 tablespoon Creole mustard
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
INSTRUCTIONS
Whisk all ingredients together until blended. Dip your pickle juicebrined wings in this sauce and taste the joy! Store in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeks.
