What’s your style?
Hello there! Our September issue is all about Style and this topic is a favorite for me. Seeing as I'm a designer and love visual eye candy, I knew from a very young age I loved being creative and mixing colors and designs. I've always had an eclectic kind of mixed style if you will. Blending and mixing different elements and textures outside of the box truly became my style. Art, color, texture and music have always had my heart and style sets the tone in all things I see.
Over the years, I have styled and designed everything from special events, homes, home decor and garden products, photo shoots, television production sets, magazines and more. It's my passion. My drive. This issue highlights some incredible women in our community who not only have beautiful style themselves, but have styled remarkable careers tied to their passions as well. I pinch myself every day that I get to do this job. The ladies you will discover in the pages to come pour their hearts into their work. Hearing their stories, their milestones, and their accomplishments simply inspires me. I hope you are moved too.
From styling hair, to homes to designing apparel and gifts, to giving back to women in need... I hope you will be inspired by reading the stories in this issue. Lebanon may be little, but wow is it full of a powerful punch when it comes to its people and their passions! I am so proud to know and work in this community!
I have always been a believer to follow what moves you and to always just be you...no matter your style. God gave each of us a little flame. And so...this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine! I hope you do the same.
XoXo,
September 2023

From Barn to Buc-ee’s
Southern Fried Barn Design scales from Lebanon to Nationwide in more than 1,000 stores
ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KACIE Q PHOTOGRAPHYLebanon native and owner of Southern Fried Barn Design, Amy Kinslow, knew from a young age that she wanted a career in the art field. After learning graphic design in high school and continuing on to earn her Bachelors in Fine Arts and a concentration in Graphic Design from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), her company now sells their sassy southern flare shirts, kitchen towels, zipper pouches, diner mugs, koozies, and stationery products to over 1000 retail stores nationwide, including all 22 locations of Buc-ees!
“I learned that with graphic design I could work with any type of client, whether it be a cattle farmer or a large corporate firm. I did not want to be limited to only working with a certain client and I liked the idea that work could always be new and different,” says Amy, “When I first started this business, it was the local Lebanon community that would purchase my products from my booth at the Country Living
Fair. I sold wholesale to the shop owners on the Lebanon square. Hometown friends would share and like my posts on social media. We all have to start somewhere and I'm really fortunate to have started in a supportive community.”
“Throughout high school and into college, I worked about four different jobs in Lebanon. I learned the value of a dollar during those years. Today, I never take for granted that someone is spending their hard earned money when purchasing our products,” she shared.
Like most small business owners, Amy balances many plates in the operation, production, marketing and distribution, but continues to maintain her artist’s heart with designing and creating still being her favorite part of owning her business since 2012.
“The business has been and continues to be blessed and with that growth, I've had to navigate my roles and learn to delegate tasks even design work,” she explained,
“This past year Lexus Kirby, a graduate of MTSU's graphic design program, joined our team and has been a huge help in the production and design of many of our newest products.”
Manufacturing and distributing on the scale that Southern Fried Barn Design takes a lot of ingenuity and tenacity, a challenge this Wilson County farm girl was equipped for. As the daughter of one of Wilco’s most loved large animal vets, she understood the value and importance of business relationships.
“Well it [scaling and production] took some time,” Amy told us, “I started researching and cultivating relationships with businesses in the local Middle Tennessee area from day one. As the business grew I learned that I needed multiple silkscreen printers to keep up with our shirt and kitchen towel volume. I'm really proud to say that we support eight local Tennessee small businesses.
We also work with manufacturers in other states and in India.”
When they began importing, a whole new level of learning was unlocked, and the reward for being a lifelong learner is evident in Amy’s success.
“I ask a lot of questions and I am continuously learning, I'm a sponge with information. I will listen to podcasts, read books, and research google to its last page,” she says, “When I started to import some of our products from overseas I did not have a clue about custom fees, duty taxes, or ship freight costs. Learning all of the lingo and rules was a challenge but I feel like every year I get better at our import process.”
Amy also says staying connected with others in the gift industry has been a great support to her success, explaining that veterans in the industry are often there to help answer questions, after all, as rising tide sails all ships, so do entrepreneurs amongst each other.
LEARN MORE: Amy Kinslow has held designer positions for Fortune 500 Company, Country Music Television and for the gift industry leader, C.R. Gibson. Her work has been featured on the CMT Music Awards, Southern Living Magazine, Country Living Magazine, Style Blueprint, and sold in T.J. Maxx, Target, Staples and now Buc-ee’s and many more. Seasonal and PERMANENT DECOR TIPS for Your Home
Looking for home decor? Look no further than the heart of Lebanon. Located in our bustling downtown square, The Artful Abode is a home decor boutique owned and operated by Becky Kemp.
“We are proud to bring something a little bit different to the area,” explained Becky, who says they specialize in all things artsy. Their stunning 2200 square feet boasts beautiful pieces of wall art, pottery, ceramics, jewelry, and unique gifts, with many on consignment from talented local artists.
Raised in Lebanon and working in retail home decor for more than 25 years, Becky’s passion for art and travel is obvious as soon as you walk into this eclectic showroom. Bringing in her husband Matt’s background in construction, the visually dynamic boutique is the perfect place for expert advice or just a little browsing.
AS AUTUMN APPROACHES AND THE NESTING OF WINTER LINGERS IN THE DISTANCE, WE ASKED BECKY HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PIECE OF ART FOR YOUR HOME.
She says, when choosing artworks for your home, it really comes down to your personal taste. You’re the one who will be living with it so make sure it is something that genuinely speaks to you and that you truly love. There are a few things you may want to consider when choosing your artwork.
• Size definitely matters. Choosing something too small can be a common mistake. In most cases bigger is usually better. A general rule is that the artwork should take up 60% - 75% of the available wall space.
• Think about the color palette of the room. You’ll want to make sure the artwork will coordinate or complement the other colors in the room.

The Artful Abode is Lebanon’s go to place for all things artsy
• Consider the style of your home and the furnishings in it. It is important that the subject matter of the artwork or general feeling of the art relates back to the room it is in. Ask yourself, is my room contemporary, modern, farmhouse, traditional, eclectic, etc? The artwork you choose will help set the mood of the room.
QUICK TIPS FOR ADDING SEASONAL AND HOLIDAY DECOR TO YOUR HOME WITHOUT FEELING LIKE IT’S TOO CLUTTERED:
The fall has arrived and you’d like to make your home feel a little more cozy and festive. Here are a few easy tips to help you along the way.
• Adding lots of texture to your room can dramatically change the feel. You might swap out throw blankets for heavier woven ones or maybe add one made of faux fur.
• Swap the covers on your throw pillows for warm moody textured patterns or with festive holiday prints.
• Hang a seasonal or holiday wreath on your door or add fall foliage pieces to the one you already have. You can also hang wreaths over decorative mirrors in your home to add lots of dimension and texture to your walls.
• Transition any greenery arrangement in your house by adding a few evergreen stems or dried florals to each one.
• Scent is a very powerful tool. Change out your candles, diffusers, or essential oils seasonally. Choose spicy or earthy scents in the fall and winter to give the feeling of warmth and coziness.

EMPOWERED WOMEN EMPOWER OTHER WOMEN
PHOTOGRAPHY ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMANCommunity advocates Brittany Davis and Suanne Bone recognized a gap in service for women in need, in a space that is almost entirely overlooked: women in jail.
Staggering statistics show the incarceration of women in the United States increased by more than 525% from 1980 and 2021, increasing 117% from 2003 to 2018 alone, with the majority of them suffering from major trauma as children. Our Sister's Keeper, Inc, a Lebanon based non-profit aims to support and advocate for these women both during and after their time in the criminal justice system, serving Wilson and Smith counties. The goal is to ultimately serve the entire 15th Judicial District, which includes Wilson, Smith, Macon, Jackson and Trousdale counties.
Join them on September 9, at The Farm at Cedar Springs for their first annual Boots N’ Shoot sporting clay fundraiser event.
“Many of these women were left to fend for themselves, often at very young ages,” says co-founder Brittany, an Assistant Public Defender with the 15th Judicial District.
The more involved Brittany became with her many clients within the criminal justice system, the more she realized that many of these needed more than just legal services. She shared her concerns with her friend Suanne, a long-time Wilson county resident known for her
community involvement, and together these two strong women formulated a plan to offer help.
Our Sisters Keeper provides a diverse list of resources, from long-term drug and alcohol treatment, rehabilitation, and mentors to collecting donations specific to the needs and even finding temporary housing for pets while ladies are away getting the help she needs.
Davis is able to recognize women in need of support through her work in the courts, sending them to the team who can work as advocates and liaison between the women and their new start outside of jail. Since launching their support team, the original six ladies are out of jail and one has been clean and sober for nearly three years. Many more women have been supported through the team's weekly outreach at Smith County Jail where they host weekly life skills training courses, says Suanne.
The board of directors includes a diverse group of lawyers, community leaders, and a correctional facility visitation coordination: Brittany Davis, Carl Hudson, Winnie Hunt, Stephanie McCaleb, Jack Bare, Jeff Cherry, Shelley Gardner, Angel Kane, Russell Parish, Cathey Sweeney and Lisa Tomlinson.

SEPTEMBER 9, THE FARM AT CEDAR SPRINGS, LEBANON The Farm at Cedar Springs
THE little BLACK DRESS
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:
HOURGLASS FIGURE:
