Take me to the fair!

Hello August!

Well, summer is starting to come to a close, school is almost back in session and we are dreaming of the fall season ahead already!

Our August issue is all about our kiddos, pets, back to school and of course, THE FAIR!! If you know, you know and if you don't, you must. Lebanon is home to the best fair around the land! It's a 10 day, staple summer event the whole family can enjoy! I mean honestly, you couldn't complete the over 150 event itinerary if you tried. And now, I hope someone tries to prove me wrong. Hah!

This month, we celebrate kids! Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment and we are happy to highlight creative art programs, dance programs and college education available right here in our own backyard this month.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship. In this issue, we love sharing some fun stops around town our pets can hang out at too.

Growing up and being raised on a farm in Bethpage myself, I have always taken great pride in animals, pets and agriculture. The lessons, education and responsibility caring for animals brings to children can be life changing. I believe becoming great stewards of the land starts with kids learning about care for their pets and their homes. I encourage you all to visit the fair with your family. Let's teach our kids where our food comes from and how important carrying on these agriculture programs truly is for our future.

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

See ya at the fair!

Daycare, Sleepovers and Spa Days

NASHVILLE PET SPA PROVIDES A SAFE PLACE FOR PUPS TO PLAY WHILE YOU WORK

Tired of getting the sad puppy eyes when you leave for work?

Consider Doggy Daycare. Tina Wehrs and McKenzie Bowman worked together at a pet spa in Wisconsin, but after moving to Wilson County they couldn’t find a facility like the one they loved, so they decided to open one themselves.

“We could not find a facility that offered a kennel free, fear free, home away from home environment that we believe in wholeheartedly,” explained Tina, “So, we decided to open up our own and that is the current Nashville Pet Spa!”

Nashville Pet Spa is located at 12007 Lebanon Road in Mt. Juliet, offering daycare for as little as $25-35 per day, depending on the length of their stay. Imagine watching your companion on the playground via three high resolution cameras

throughout the day, playing with his friends instead of shredding the pillows or eating socks while bored at home.

“When dogs come in the door, they often run right in and right back to daycare to see their favorite friends! They develop deep relationships and friendships with the other dogs and the staff,” she says, “With over 10,000 square feet of outdoor play yards, the dogs are able to run and play and be dogs.”

During the summertime your fur-family member will enjoy playing in the sprinklers, pools plus has the option to hang out inside with the AC on if water isn’t their forte.

The duo share a love of dogs, especially rescues, and are passionate about the importance of rescuing, population

control and animal welfare advocacy. Not only have they fostered hundreds of dogs for Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, they each have a collection of rescue dogs at home. McKenzie has five dogs, Savanna (Doberman) Norman (Doodle), JoJo (French rescue), Alfifi (Mini Poodle) and Dutchess (Shepherd rescue) and Tina has three, Bailey, Lulu, and Franklin, all rescues.

“We truly just love dogs,” they say, “Several of our regulars have become extended family. You’ll notice our lobby becomes our geriatric unit, where many of our sweet senior friends get to hang out as official greeters when they’re with us.”

Tina says Wilson County has welcomed them with wide open arms.

“We love this community so much. We have built this special place for people and dogs with the help of every employee who has cared for our clients’ dogs as their very own. We are grateful to be part of this amazing community and we look forward to continuing to be a second home for dogs for many years to come.”

With two locations, a second in Pleasant View, the owners say their 55 staff members are the backbone of everything they do, inspiring and motivating each other to be the absolute best place for dogs every single day. Along with daycare, Nashville Pet Spa offers overnight stays, and even spa services from nails to baths to full groom, and that’s definitely something to wag your tail about.

CAMP LIKE ROYALTY

Ever thought, gosh, I would love to go camping but I don’t have a truck to tow a trailer, or I don’t have a trailer at all; pitching a tent sounds like so much work, then I’ll need to buy all of the things to live like we are homeless? Husband and wife team, Morgan and Ashley, came up with The Flying Ham, a business that solves all of those problems for you, making your camping experience feel like luxury travel. Enjoy the perfect back to school staycation for mom and dad, or weekend hassle free quick trip now that weekdays will be busy again. Based in Wilson County, starting with one camper, the Air Force Veteran couple have grown to offer three campers, four outdoor glamping tents, two indoor bubble tents, and a 1967 F100. The Flying Ham will drop off and set up the camper, glamping tent, or truck at your location of choice. All you have to do is show up. After your reservation is over, The Flying Ham will pick everything up!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS CONCEPT?

We started The Flying Ham in September 2015 when we bought our first camper (the smaller red camper) for our 10th anniversary, eight years ago. Everyone loved that camper so much, we had people stop to talk to us about it and take pictures with it. We thought it would be fun to rent it out for camping. So we bought two more campers and started a business. In the 1960s these campers were considered "canned ham" trailers because they resemble a can of ham on it's side. Our canned ham campers are Shasta campers and Shastas are known for their iconic wing. We used these two features and came up with The Flying Ham.

What started as camping only has turned into so much more. We now rent the Flying Ham campers for glamping parties, guesthouses, music videos, photo sessions, and events!

DID YOU RESTORE THE TRAILERS AND VINTAGE TRUCK YOURSELVES?

Our campers are 2015 Shasta Airflyte trailers that were made in a limited edition run. To mark its 75th anniversary, Shasta RV only produced 1,941 copies of the company’s iconic 1961 Shasta Airflyte travel trailer. We bought three of these limited edition campers and each one is numbered.

Our 1967 F100 was Morgan's grandfather's. He bought it brand new in 1967 and we towed it back from our family ranch in Montana. We have been restoring it mechanically back to its original state. The truck is a 1967 4x4 with a 352 Big Block, and only 3,500 trucks of its kind were made that year.

Dog-Friendly Spots We Love

The best places in Lebanon to spend time with your furry friend

As the owner of a Saint Bernard who brings us her leash when she notices we are getting ready to leave the house, we know how important it is to find furry-friend friendly places she can go with us. There is no shortage of hiking, biking, water and outdoor activities in Wilson County that welcome pets, but she loves nothing more than spreading across a patio and letting everyone who walks by tell her how pretty she is. It really is her favorite pastime next to sleeping and eating.

Slow Hand Bakehouse feels like home with their sprawling front porch patio. Their amazing coffee, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and burritos are a special treat for you, and they usually have dog treats to share with your pup too.

You already know we love Sammy B’s cocktails and happy hour, and just about everything else on the menu. But did you know they love when you bring your pup to enjoy your meal with them on the patio? This local favorite patio is a pet favorite too.

Tenn Lakes Brewing Co. was already voted some of the best beer and pizza in town, and their new patio does not disappoint either. Tucked in the corner of The Mill, with an abundance of shade, this space is an extension of their inside in the best way. And how can you argue with pizza and a beer with your dog?

The Lebanon Dog Park

The Lebanon Dog Park at Bob Smith Memorial Park, 408 Jim Draper Blvd., is a fully fenced, off-leash park with a playground that is sure to get the energies out. This park tends to be underused and although we aren’t mad about often having the place to ourselves, this park is truly a hidden gem you should not sleep on.

PET FRIENDLY | LIFE + CULTURE

Cedars of Lebanon

Whether you’re camping, hiking, or playing some disk golf, Cedars of Lebanon is a great place to spend time. When we consider places to hike with our exceptionally hairy Saint, we like to find places with maintained trails like Cedars so we can worry a little less about being a tick magnet. Note, there are no poop bags along the trail so bring your own and keep your leash on.

Three Dog Bakery Cumberland Mobile Veterinary Services

Coming home from an adventure out of town? Pup’s birthday? Three Dog Bakery, 1982 Providence Pkwy Ste 102, in Mount Juliet is an absolute must to make your dog feel extra special. Their celebration cakes, cookies and ice cream not only look good enough to eat yourself, they are salt, sugar, preservative, artificial flavoring and dye free. Bonus, they are locally-owned, their treats are all made in the USA, and they also have homeopathic remedies, apparel, toys, and accessories too.

Of course we can’t always sit around eating and drinking or be out hiking, sometimes our girl just likes to ride along for daily chores. Cumberland Creek Mobile Veterinary Service reminds us that it only takes six minutes for a hot car to be life threatening to a dog, so we would never leave her in the car while we run errands. Box stores like Lowes and Home Depot welcome your leashed dogs everyday making it easy to stop by for a quick shopping trip or let her tag along with us so she can get her fill of pets and loves while we get our checklists taken care of.

Channeling Emotional Expression Through Art

Wild Colors Creative Design Studio gives kid’s a space to get creative

Picasso said, every child is an artist, and Cumberland University alumni Karlie Cunha is fostering that within Lebanon. She created Wild Colors Creative Design Studio in Lebanon to guide young artists as they build their confidence and knowledge of art, increase their curiosity, and foster their expanding imaginations. Karlie, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Business Administration, knew there is a major need for a space in town where children could use their creative outlet in Wilson County, and explained how now more than ever, she believes it is crucial for children to

be able to express their emotions. Wild Colors provides that space with art, allowing children to create in a fun and encouraging learning environment.

After selling out three multi-day art camps, as well as several monthly pop-up events throughout the summer, Wild Colors Creative Design Studio will settle back into the school year routine offering monthly sessions of after school art lessons for ages four and up, with exposure and instruction on many types of art mediums. Plus she is available for private party bookings too. Voted Best Summer Camp and Birthday

Venue in Wilson County, Karlie offers everything from color wheel mapping, color theory, classic canvas painting, mixed media, recycled art, holiday themes, jewelry making, culture and historic art education, geometric, shape studies and abstracts, watercolors, graphite, positive and negative space, implied and actual textures, plus art history to spark long time learning interest and more.

Lebanon Welcomes Cumberland University Students Back to Campus

RESERVE A WELCOME BACK SIGN FOR YOUR BUSINESS OR HOME!

Each fall, Cumberland University welcomes thousands of students to campus, hundreds of which are calling Lebanon home for the first time. Cumberland University’s Welcome Week takes place during the first week of classes and encourages relationship building and networking between students and the local community as students acclimate to their new home.

For the first time, Cumberland invited the Wilson County community to join them and embrace the return of Cumberland Phoenix last fall. Over 200 local businesses and community members displayed yard signs and window decals, showcasing their support of the university and welcoming the return of students as they began a new academic year. The City of Lebanon did their part to ensure Cumberland students, faculty and staff received a warm welcome as they were greeted by new banners on light poles across town echoing the yard sign messaging,“Together We Rise.”

This unified hospitality inspires Cumberland students, faculty, and staff to explore all the local charm Lebanon has to offer.

This year, Cumberland is once again inviting local business owners and Cumberland supporters in Wilson County to extend a warm welcome during the first week of classes August 21 through 27, by reserving signs and decals to display as students return.

If you are interested in picking up yard signs and/or decals, visit www.cumberland. edu/lebanon-businesses-join-cumberland-in-welcome-week/

Dance and Devotion, Ballet Adora Fosters Hearts for Jesus

HIGH CALIBER CLASSICAL BALLET, POINTE, TAP, JAZZ, AND LYRICAL TRAINING IN A KIND, HOLISTIC ENVIRONMENT

I've wanted to own my own studio since I was a teenager and starting in 2013, at 18 years old, I began teaching eight kids in a classroom at Crossroads Fellowship Church. Over the years we grew organically and moved into a space on the Lebanon square and then in 2020 we expanded to our 8,000 sqft space on South Maple St. I come from a background in classical ballet and I wanted to bring high caliber training in a kind and holistic environment to Lebanon. What started as a small group of kids has grown into a school of almost 300 students and we just celebrated our 10th anniversary! Our mission from day one has been to train dancers in excellent dance technique, in a creative and positive environment. We want to use the studio to minister to kids and to help them to use their God given talents to the best of their ability.

Ballet Adora is born out of the Latin word Adora which means to worship. Our goal has always been to use dance as a way to share the Gospel and we do that throughout our classes, shows, and outreach opportunities and it's incorporated into our name!

This summer we've had the wonderful opportunity to work with Barefoot Republic at Amy Grant's farm in Franklin. It was truly a dream come true! Barefoot is an incredible ministry, with a mission to bring kids from all different backgrounds together and minister to them through arts and athletic camps. We got to spend two weeks on Amy Grant's farm this

GET ACTIVE | ARTS + CULTURE
28

past June, teaching daily ballet classes. It was such a special opportunity; Ms. Amy and all the staff at Barefoot were so kind and absolutely incredible, definitely one of the highlights of my career.

At Ballet Adora dancers have a choice of how much time they want to invest in dance, so we offer options for taking dance once a week or multiple days a week. We offer classes starting at three years old and kids have the option of progressing up to our robust advance program for upper level dancers. Dancers also have the opportunity to be a part of our performance company and make up the cast of our large productions such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Christy.

WHAT BENEFITS DOES A CHILD GET FROM ATTENDING DANCE AT A YOUNG AGE?

• Confidence: This grows exponentially when a child dances!

• Coordination: Dance helps with increasing balance, developing motor skills!

• Expressing Feelings: Dane is incredibly helpful in expressing emotions which can sometimes be difficult for a child to share and articulate. Music and dance are incredibly therapeutic and we incorporate a holistic approach to training to develop the dancer's body and mind. Seeing a student overcome the challenge of learning a new skill is one of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher!

With our heart for community, we love offering scholarships to attend Bella Adora.
