LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Publisher As we step into a new year, I’m reminded that January carries a quiet kind of power offering the promise of a fresh start, the gentle reset after the fullness of the holiday season, and the invitation to reflect on what truly sustains us. In this issue, we celebrate Health and Wellness in its most complete form: not only the physical strength that carries us through our days, but the emotional and spiritual grounding that brings depth, joy, and meaning to our lives. Health, of course, begins with our bodies. It’s the commitment to move with intention, to fuel ourselves mindfully, to rest deeply, and to listen closely to what our physical selves are trying to tell us. But lasting well-being is so much more than a workout routine or a well-balanced meal. It’s the steady heartbeat of our relationships, the health of our marriages and partnerships, the presence we bring to our children, and the friendships that strengthen us in ways no metric can measure. As we welcome a new year, I want to share a few things I’ve added to my life that have brought health and happiness to me and my family. These aren’t resolutions; they’re discoveries. Small shifts that have helped us feel stronger, more grounded, more connected, and more at peace. My hope is that by opening a window into my own journey, you might feel inspired to explore and nurture your own. Because the truth is: You can be strong on the outside and still need gentleness on the inside. You can be disciplined in your goals and still crave spiritual grounding. You can show up for everyone around you and still forget to show up for yourself. As you move into this new year, may you find rhythms that restore you, relationships that surround you, and moments that remind you of who you are becoming and who you were always intended to be.

When you walk into a freshly remodeled home, the transformation feels almost magical. Walls shifted, light reimagined, flow restored. But behind every seamless “after” photo is a contractor who knows how to hold a homeowner’s vision steady while navigating the reality of construction. For Plan Rebuild, that balance isn’t a marketing line, it’s the foundation of everything they do. Owner Jeff Stewart, who grew up in a family of carpenters, has lived and breathed construction since his first high-school job. Residential remodeling felt like home from the start. “I’ve always wanted to work for myself,” he says, “and I’ve always loved the transformation that comes with remodeling.” What began as a passion has grown into a five-person team known across the Kansas City and Leawood area for meticulous work, thoughtful design, and a refreshingly modern approach to communication. Plan Rebuild doesn’t approach projects with a one-size-fits-all aesthetic. Instead, they describe themselves as a blend of high-end vision and budget-friendly practicality. Their goal isn’t to force a particular look; it’s to elevate what homeowners want while honoring what they’re comfortable spending. The process begins with an in-home consultation. Jeff walks the space, takes photos and measurements, and listens closely to how the homeowner lives in their home. From there, an estimate opens the door to the next phase—bringing in their trusted architect and in-house designer to begin plans and selections. It’s a full-service approach designed to take the intimidation out of remodeling from day one. They’re known for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and whole-home remodels, but home additions have quietly become their specialty. “We enjoy all projects,” he says, “but additions have really become a sweet spot for us.”

“We really care about our clients,” Jeff says. “We’re always willing to talk through any issue and find a solution together.” Still, nothing shows their range quite like a recent wholehouse remodel in Old Leawood, completed in late 2024, where the team transformed nearly every inch of a dated home into something custom and stunning. A dingy basement became a speakeasy, complete with a Murphy door entrance. Custom stair railings, large built-in cabinetry, and reglet drywall openings turned structural necessities into true architectural moments. It was a project that showcased not only craftsmanship but creativity and problem-solving at every turn. Ask any homeowner about their worst renovation fear, and you’ll hear the same answer: poor communication. Plan Rebuild has turned that fear on its head. “Communication is our top priority,” Jeff says. Homeowners receive a live construction schedule, daily updates, and a dedicated group text for quick questions and real-time check-ins. Change orders are discussed immediately and approved before any work begins—no surprises, no last-minute sticker shock. This level of clarity is what truly sets Plan Rebuild apart. “We really care about our clients,” he says. “We’re always willing to talk through any issue and find a solution together.” Renovation surprises, especially in older homes, are inevitable. Plan Rebuild relies on long-standing partnerships with local architects and engineering firms to address structural curveballs quickly and correctly. Every solution is reviewed and approved by the city, giving homeowners confidence that their home is both beautiful and safe.

Technology strengthens those assurances. Through Buildertrend construction management software, homeowners can see schedules, progress updates, documents, and communication all in one place. Its transparency has elevated. Every subcontractor and supplier Plan Rebuild partners with is local. Aside from the occasional Lowe’s trip for tools or smaller needs, the team sources materials and talent from right here in the community, something that strengthens both quality control and relationships. When a homeowner isn’t sure what they want, the team steps in with care. Their designer helps clarify vision, their architect looks at structural possibilities, and Jeff offers guidance based on years of hands-on experience. “I typically treat each project as if it were my own house,” he says. “I share what I’d do and what’s worked well in similar spaces.” Home trends shift. Light woods, bright palettes, and airy finishes are popular now, but the impact of a remodel lasts far beyond any single style. If there’s one project homeowners consistently wish they’d done sooner? Basements. “They’re a fairly simple, not-super-expensive investment that completely changes how people live in their home,” he says. And maybe that’s the heartbeat of Plan Rebuild: they aren’t just contractors. They’re collaborators, guides, craftsmen, and steady hands through a chaotic process. What they build isn’t just beautiful homes; it’s trust, comfort, and spaces people are proud to live in.

REDEFINING

MODERN HEALTHCARE Peeling back the curtain on Ascentist healthcare and how its leadership embraces patient-centric care

Healthcare experiences can vary greatly, often shaping how patients feel about the system as a whole. These challenges were recognized by the leaders at Ascentist Healthcare, motivated by a commitment to improving access and creating a more patient-centered experience. Dr. Doug Cowan, President and CEO of Ascentist, established the private healthcare system in response to the access gaps he observed throughout his career. A Kansas City native and University of Kansas graduate, Dr. Cowan’s experience in both private practice and medical missions shaped a clear vision of what high-quality healthcare should look like – equitable and timely access for patients. “Our commitment is to deliver exceptional care,” he said. “From the moment patients walk through our doors, they experience something different - the efficiency and expertise that gets them to a much better place, faster. Our organization is designed to diagnose and resolve patient problems quickly and effectively,” Dr. Cowan said. “As you look at a lot of other systems or practices, there are really long waits. Our expectation is that if there is any urgency to the scenario, we find a way to get them in,” Dr. Spencer Eagan said. “I think being patient forward is what defines our organization. We try to do what is best for the patient.” CONTINUED >

25

Dr. Eagan is an executive partner and plastic surgeon at Ascentist Healthcare, bringing experience in building and leading healthcare programs. A Lawrence, Kansas native and fellow Jayhawk, he first crossed paths with Dr. Cowan on the soccer field. That early connection later evolved into a partnership defined by their shared vision for patient-centered care and a mutual drive to improve the healthcare experience. “The combination of our backgrounds makes us a lot stronger and more nimble,” Dr. Eagan said. “We try to create an environment that doesn’t feel medical, and I think a lot of it is the caring nature of our staff and providers. I think one of the big reasons why we’re here today is the culture Doug set from top to bottom.” “We always knew we’d work together because we share the same core values - a deep commitment to our patients, our staff, and doing what’s right. It was a natural partnership from the start,” Dr. Cowan said. Dr. Cowan and Dr. Eagan have seen Ascentist Healthcare grow into one of Kansas City’s most trusted and widely recognized healthcare organizations. With over 20 specialties and 18 locations throughout the metro area, it continues to expand at a rapid pace. While skill and talent are essential, the physicians emphasize that compassion and the collective strength of the team ultimately shape how they build their organization. “We recruit exceptionally talented physicians - not only for their clinical expertise, but for their character. We seek kind, compassionate people who genuinely care about their patients and colleagues. Our culture naturally attracts and nurtures the kind of outstanding professionals who want to be part of what we’re building,” Dr. Cowan said. “That is one of the big things that separates us, but that’s not just due to us. It’s due to everyone that’s a part of the organization,” Dr. Eagan said. “It’s the administrative leaders, the people that greet people when they come in, the nurses that follow up on tests and communicate the good news, and sometimes, the bad news.” The breadth of expertise at Ascentist enables providers to collaborate effectively across specialties. Anchored by trust and camaraderie, inside and outside the clinic, the organization’s culture strives to deliver the best possible care to patients. “We have physicians who’ve been practicing their specialties for 30 years, yet they’re completely reimagining how they approach certain problems,” Dr. Cowan said. “Take chronic cough, for example - we’re treating it in a truly unique way. We bring together lung specialists, GI specialists, and ENT specialists, all working in the same space. We’re identifying and resolving conditions that patients have endured for 20 years or more. The level of collaboration, communication, and trust among our providers has been extraordinary.” Their leadership ensures patients are empowered to express their needs openly, ask questions freely, and feel secure in their expectations. While reaching this level of care has taken significant effort and investment, Dr. Cowan and Dr. Eagan remain driven—not to chase greater success, but to better serve the people they are privileged to call their patients. “Today, I saw a patient who is two years out from breast cancer. I often tell my patients that reaching this milestone is when you truly feel like yourself again. Seeing her thriving made my day. This is why we do what we do—for happy patients and to solve the challenges they face.” Dr. Eagan said. “Our leaders and team members alike are driven by something bigger than individual recognition,” Dr. Cowan said. “It’s about treating people the way you want to be treated, constantly elevating our standards, and embracing change to create meaningful improvements. Ultimately, what makes Ascentist special is the genuine care and commitment we show to the people we lead and serve.”

Gluten-Free Classes at Billie’s Grocery ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

For many home cooks navigating dietary restrictions, gluten-free baking can feel intimidating, confusing, or even discouraging. At Billie’s Grocery, Robin Krause and Jamie Couch are changing that narrative with hands-on cooking classes designed to empower, educate, and inspire. Robin Krause, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, explains the motivation behind offering cooking and baking classes: “As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I kept meeting people who were trying so hard to feel better while navigating new food sensitivities, dietary needs, wellness goals, or lifestyle changes. Along the way, they were confused about ingredients and losing the joy of eating. Food began to feel stressful instead of celebratory. I wanted to change that.” The classes aim to help people reconnect with food and feel confident in the kitchen, whether they are creating indulgent desserts or everyday meals. “Our hope is to help people reconnect with food, take pride in preparing it, and leave feeling inspired, empowered, and excited to cook again,” Robin adds. Gluten-free doughs behave differently than traditional dough, which can make baking feel daunting. In the classes, Robin shares practical strategies: “We show students how to batch-prep doughs and freeze them so you can bake fresh whenever you want without waste or pressure. Having a freezer stash of treats ready to go makes gluten-free baking feel a lot more attainable and rewarding.” She also emphasizes simple ingredient swaps that maintain moisture, flavor, and texture. Even classic pastries like cinnamon rolls posed challenges. “Gluten-free dough doesn’t behave like traditional dough, so it took a lot of trial and error, and patience to get it right,” Robin explains. The class versions are tailored for home bakers, ensuring participants leave with recipes they can recreate reliably without commercial equipment. For many students, the biggest breakthrough comes in seeing their dough work as intended. Robin says, “The biggest breakthrough for our students is confidence. The moment they see a gluten-free dough come together that is stretchy, workable, and behaving exactly how it should, then something clicks. The hardest part of gluten-free baking isn’t the flour, it’s the fear.” Understanding flour blends is another critical tip for successful gluten-free baking. “Gluten-free flours aren’t one-size-fits-all, and the blend you choose dramatically changes texture, moisture, and flavor. Most importantly, don’t stop after one attempt. Try the same recipe with two or three flour blends, and you’ll be amazed by how much the dough transforms,” Robin advises.

“Indulgence and wellness don’t have to be opposites. We try to approach recipe development with the intention of balance.”

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Balancing indulgence with nutrition is a core philosophy at Billie’s. Robin shares, “Indulgence and wellness don't have to be opposites. We try to approach recipe development with the intention of balance by using alternative ingredients like pure maple syrup instead of sugar, gluten-free flours, and whole ingredients that nourish without compromising flavor.” The classes are designed to be fun and interactive. “We start with a quick demonstration to get everyone comfortable, then we let you take over. You mix, shape, decorate, and bak, and we’re right there with you. Each class has an instructor and a teaching assistant, so no one ever feels lost, stuck, or unsure of what to do next,” Robin explains. Ending the class with a shared meal reinforces the sense of connection. “Health and wellness aren’t just about ingredients, but rather they’re about connection. Ending the class family-style brings everyone together and creates a moment of joy around the table,” Robin says. Whether a beginner or an experienced cook, participants find classes approachable and stimulating. Robin and Jamie Couch, Director of the Cooking School, note, “We design our classes to work for everyone. Recipes are familiar enough to master, interesting enough to excite. And if anyone ever does feel bored, we just pour more wine.”

Classes also emphasize intentional cooking at home. Jamie explains, “We show how simple finishing touches like a handful of herbs, a splash of olive oil, or a bright garnish of something green can transform a dish both nutritionally and visually. Our goal is to give people tools that make healthy, intolerance-friendly cooking sustainable at home, exciting, and full of flavor and not something you just ‘get through’.” For many, the classes are more than just cooking lessons. They are empowering experiences. Robin shares a poignant moment from a gluten-free pot pie class: “We had a student with celiac who hadn’t eaten pot pie in more than 20 years. Watching her take that first bite, eyes welling up, reminded us exactly why we do this. We love helping people reclaim those comfort foods in a way that feels safe, delicious, and exciting again.” Billie’s Grocery also offers private events and classroom gift cards for celebrations, corporate gatherings, or team-building activities. Jamie adds, “It’s more than an event—it’s an experience, and one we’re always honored to create.” Registration is simple through Billie’s website at billiesgrocery. com under the ‘Cooking School’ tab. For anyone looking to learn gluten-free techniques, connect with fellow food lovers, and leave the kitchen with confidence, creativity, and delicious results, Billie’s Grocery cooking classes offer a hands-on invitation to rediscover the joy of cooking.

Where Comfort Meets Comprehensive Care

Long before becoming the owner of Leawood Dental, Dr. Luke Joliff, D.D.S., envisioned a practice built on trust, comfort, and community. Today, that vision is fully realized in a space where families feel supported, modern dentistry thrives, and strong patient relationships remain at the heart of every visit. Dr. Joliff grew up in Topeka and always knew Kansas was where he wanted his life and career to unfold. After earning his degree in Human Biology from the University of Kansas, he completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the UMKC School of Dentistry, drawn to the blend of science, artistry, and connection that dentistry offered. His early years practicing in Oklahoma helped refine the patient-first philosophy that defines his work today, but he always knew he’d come home. Joining and eventually leading Leawood Dental gave him the opportunity to build something truly meaningful for both his patients and his growing family. “Building Leawood Dental has been one of the great joys of my career,” says Dr. Joliff. “I’m passionate about creating beautiful, healthy smiles, but even more passionate about building strong relationships with

the families who trust us with their care. I stay active in continuing education and am a proud member of the American Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association, and the 5th District Dental Society. My goal is simple: to bring my patients the most modern, comfortable, and personalized experience possible.” At the center of Dr. Joliff’s world is his family. “My family is at the heart of everything I do. My wife, Taylor, and I live near Leawood with our two daughters, Margot and Louise, and our golden retriever, Mac. We love spending time outside and going on long family walks. They are a big part of the story behind why I love this community and why I’m so proud to serve the families who live here.” That family-forward philosophy has shaped the entire patient experience at Leawood Dental. “Our practice is built on two core pillars that truly set us apart in the Kansas City area: comprehensive dentistry and unmatched comfort. We provide a full scope of modern dental care under one roof, which allows patients and families to receive virtually everything they need in a single, trusted location. Our team excels in the areas patients ask about most.”

Patients appreciate being able to receive comprehensive dental care in one office, whether they’re interested in Invisalign, dental implants, cosmetic enhancements like bonding or veneers, or simply finding a welcoming place for their child’s first dental visit. Consolidating these services under one roof makes life easier for busy families and strengthens long-term relationships with their care team. “Equally important is the experience we create. Dentistry should feel calm, positive, and even enjoyable. Our comfort-focused environment includes warm blankets, noise-canceling headphones, TVs, and a curated “comfort menu” so patients feel relaxed from start to finish. Our team is known for being gentle, warm, and genuinely invested in each person who walks through our doors. Together, these two pillars, advanced, full-service dentistry and an elevated comfort experience, are what make Leawood Dental a place patients are proud to call their dental home.”

Dr. Joliff is also quick to highlight the team that helps bring this vision to life. Two exceptional associate doctors expand the practice’s ability to offer elevated, specialized care. Dr. Mehlin, a Kansas City native and former St. Louis University baseball player, has advanced training in oral surgery, implant dentistry, and fullmouth rehabilitation, allowing the practice to confidently handle complex treatments. Dr. Burnett, a Kansas native and former UMKC soccer player, brings specialized experience in cosmetic dentistry, smile design, and both aesthetic and therapeutic Botox, offering patients modern, confidence-boosting options that go beyond traditional dental care. Together, the team provides a level of clinical depth and personalized attention. This year, the practice expanded its reach with the addition of Belton Healthy Smiles. The expansion reflects a clear vision for the future of making high-quality, comprehensive dentistry more accessible to families in Belton and the surrounding communities. Leawood Dental is located at 11551 Granada Lane just north of Town Center. On the Missouri side, Belton Healthy Smiles is located at 8435 Clint Drive. For more information, visit leawood.dental.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

42

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”

K ANSAS CITY B ONE & JOIN T: THE EXPERT CARE BEHIND A COMMUNITY IN MOTION

For more than 85 years, Kansas City Bone & Joint has been a trusted destination for Orthopedic care in Kansas City. As an independent, private practice, the clinic delivers personalized care with superior quality and value, offering a broad range of orthopedic and rehabilitative services designed to get patients back to their active lives. Kansas City Bone & Joint combines a legacy of expertise with a commitment to innovation. The practice’s team of fellowship-trained specialists covers multiple sub-specialties, ensuring that every patient is matched with a physician best suited to their needs. Thomas Samuelson, MD, president of KCBJ, emphasizes the practice’s accessibility and independence. “Our large practice allows you to be seen by a specialist specific to your problems. Being independent also allows us to provide care without the added fees that are seen from a hospital-owned group or a university-based practice.” For urgent needs, patients can take advantage of Ortho Now, the clinic’s orthopedic urgent care, which offers same-day walk-in appointments. Patients at KCBJ experience a comprehensive approach to care, starting with education and consultation and continuing through rehabilitation and recovery. Jeffrey Salin, DO, a specialist in total hip and knee replacement, explains, “Educating patients on what to expect after surgery and recovery decreases anxiety and pain. Most patients will state that they are significantly better than preoperatively at around four to six weeks.” Dr. Salin and the team focus on staying current with orthopedic advancements, attending professional society meetings and exploring emerging technologies to ensure patients benefit from the latest techniques and implants. The clinic also offers innovative treatments beyond traditional orthopedics. Atul Patel, MD explains, “My guiding philosophy is to focus on what is best for the patient. Listening to the patient, obtaining a thorough history, and conducting an appropriate examination followed by necessary tests has worked best.” Careful evaluation and personalized planning help patients achieve meaningful results, whether addressing complex neurological conditions or musculoskeletal challenges.

Sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures form another cornerstone of KCBJ’s offerings. Brandon Barnds, MD, explains, “We are excited about our ability to get active patients back to athletics and a healthy lifestyle after complex shoulder surgeries like arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement.” Matthew Mackay, MD, focuses on precision in knee and shoulder surgery, noting, “Improvements in arthroscopic techniques, graft options, and biologic augmentation allow patients to recover more quickly and reliably.” Hand and microvascular care receive dedicated attention as well with Suzanne Elton, MD, who approaches treatment with empathy and practical solutions. “I really want to treat others like I would want to be treated. I strive to help patients understand their condition and their options for treatment.” She encourages the community to seek care early, emphasizing that timely intervention often opens the door to more treatment options and smoother recovery. Foot, ankle, and joint specialists, including John Bleazard, DO, and Michael Latteier, MD, provide targeted care for patients of all ages. Dr. Bleazard describes the clinic’s approach, “By recognizing that there are different goals and priorities with each age group, we optimize outcomes for children, adults, and elderly patients.” John Clinton Walker, MD, reinforces KCBJ’s patient-centered philosophy, “I love to solve problems for people. I want patients to understand their problem and the options available to them and help them find the solution that is right

for them.” Across every specialty, KCBJ physicians prioritize communication, shared decision-making, and treatments tailored to each individual’s lifestyle and goals. Kansas City Bone & Joint’s continued growth reflects a commitment to expanding access to care. From its early beginnings in 1940 to its modern facilities in Overland Park and Lee’s Summit, the clinic blends experience, innovation, and compassion. Dr. Samuelson looks ahead, saying, “We look forward to being a quality provider of musculoskeletal care in the Kansas City region for many years to come. We are accessible with same-day urgent care options and provide cutting-edge treatment for all our patients.” For local residents seeking expert orthopedic care, Kansas City Bone & Joint offers a complete, patient-centered experience. Whether recovering from surgery, addressing sports injuries, or seeking solutions for chronic pain, the clinic’s team delivers innovative treatments, compassionate care, and a commitment to helping every patient return to the life they love.

PUBLISHER TIPS ARTICLE BY DARA WITTE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

GROUND YOUR SPIRIT

Each morning, I read the devotional Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young. It quiets the anxiety, insecurity, and doubt I, admittedly, let settle into corners of my mind by filling me with truth, clarity, peace, and encouragement I need each day. Surround yourself with words that lift, strengthen, and remind you who you are. Begin your day with truth, however you define it. A devotional, gratitude list, meditation, prayer, or affirmations can help reorient your heart and your mind.

BALANCE YOUR BODY

For most of my life, kickboxing has been my favorite form of exercise. Over time, however, I realized my body was asking for more stability in the form of intentional movement, small muscle engagement, and a focus on whole-body restoration. Because of

50

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

this, I added Pilates to my routine, and I will never look back. A stronger, more balanced version of me is in the works for 2026! Ask yourself what your body is craving right now: strength, flexibility, rest, or something new. Choose one practice that honors what your body has been quietly asking for.

ESTABLISH A NIGHTLY RITUAL

My nighttime routine has become one of my greatest and simplest pleasures. For my female readers, I recommend choosing your favorite scented lotion or perfume, and allow yourself to indulge! Then, invest in pajamas that make you feel beautiful and actually wear them! Finally, don't forget those lips! They deserve some end-of-day love, as well. My personal favorites are below. A nighttime ritual is a gift you give yourself and one you feel immediately. Create one small ritual, morning or night, that is meant only for you.

PROTECT THE MOMENT

One of the most transformative shifts my family made in 2025 was adopting "Screen-Free Sundays." We put away our phones and tablets and move into a slower, more intentional rhythm. We cook together, play board games, and we get outside as much as the weather allows. Having a range of ages in my home has taught me to remember that they're only little for a moment, so we try to make the most of the time we have together. Choose one weekly rhythm that brings your family closer. Start with a single activity or a simple meal together. Small shifts can create the biggest connections.

BE INTENTIONAL

My husband and I have always done weekly date nights. With work, kids, and the pace of everyday life, we try our best to be intentional about spending time together. Setting aside time to

reconnect, laugh together, and simply enjoy each other’s company has continued to strengthen our relationship and smooths the big and little bumps we encounter along the way. Choose one small moment this week to reconnect with your significant other without distractions, without agenda, just together.

MAKE TIME FOR FRIENDS

Mahjong nights with girlfriends became one of my favorite outlets in 2025! Time spent is filled with laughter, SNACKS, deep conversation, and the kind of renewal you can only get from being around friends who lift you up and choose to love and encourage you, even when you aren't on your A-game. Especially in busy seasons, these moments have fed me in ways I never even knew I needed. Find a hobby that brings you closer to people who fill your soul. Whether it’s Mahjong, a book club, or a weekly coffee, choose something that brings joy and community.
