Being a parent has been the greatest honor of my life. I think anyone with children would say the same. It has pushed me to grow as a person more than anything else, and the pure love you feel the moment they are born is something I didn’t understand the full depth of until experiencing it firsthand. I remember being told that having kids is like having your heart outside of your body walking around the world. That couldn’t be more true.
As a mother, I’ve spent countless nights worrying about one of my kids over something they were going through, and just as many feeling overjoyed watching another navigate a big win. Watching your child move through the ups and downs of life isn’t something you’re ever quite prepared for, but it is so worthwhile. Some of my proudest moments as a parent haven’t necessarily been when my kids achieved great things, but rather in the seasons of adversity and witnessing their strong character shine through during the hard moments in life.
With four kids, ages 17 to 23, I’ve had my fair share of watching them experience every facet of life, from honors and big wins to disappointments and rejection. It is not always easy, but there is no greater honor than being there for them for every part.
As my children have grown older, I love the shift from a parenting relationship into more of a friendship, even though they still very much need their mom. Looking back, it truly feels like the years flew by in a flash. I miss those days more than I expected to, but each new stage brings its own richness and fulfillment, and I am thankful for every milestone of parenting.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

When most people think of foster care, they imagine intervention happening after a crisis has already occurred. What if a simple act of support could open the door to the kind of community that helps prevent crisis in the first place? That's the idea behind CarePortal, a technology platform that connects local churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals with real-time needs in their communities.
Founded in 2015 by Adrien Lewis, CarePortal was born from years of involvement in foster care, adoption, and child welfare.
"Today, I help lead a movement we call Care-Sharing, connecting churches, businesses, caseworkers, and caring neighbors to support vulnerable children and families,” says Lewis. “Too often, what turns hardship into crisis is isolation. CarePortal exists to help neighbors see and serve their neighbors with resources and relationships before challenges escalate, because we believe connection changes everything.”
Many children enter foster care because families are carrying the weight of poverty, isolation, and unmet basic needs without a supportive community around them. CarePortal works to address those needs before they escalate.
"A bed, a car seat, a utility payment, or transportation to work may seem small, but those requested items create opportunities for people to step into a family’s life with both practical help and genuine care. We've seen

over and over that when communities show up early and families are surrounded by support, they’re more likely to stay together.”
The process begins when a caseworker, school counselor, or other frontline professional identifies a vetted need and submits it through the CarePortal platform. The request is then shared with nearby churches and community responders through email, text message, or the CarePortal app.
One story that continues to inspire Lewis is that of MeKaisha, a 17-year-old preparing to age out of foster care while expecting a child of her own. With little support and limited resources, a caseworker submitted a request for a crib through CarePortal. The Denbow family responded by donating one their son had outgrown.
“What started as a simple need quickly became something much more. The family didn't just provide a crib. They welcomed MeKaisha into their lives, throwing her a baby shower, helping her learn to drive, inviting her into their church community, and over time, becoming like family.”
Today, MeKaisha is a thriving mother and advocate for other young people aging out of foster care.
"A crib met an immediate need, but the relationship that followed made the lasting difference. And that's exactly what CarePortal is designed to help happen.”
That emphasis on connection extends beyond individual families. CarePortal brings together churches, nonprofits, businesses, social service agencies, and community members to work toward a common goal.
Over the past decade, that model has helped the Kansas City community serve more than 34,000 children. Lewis says the greatest need remains participation.
"People often assume they need a lot of money or a lot of free time to make a difference. That's simply not true.”
Support can take many forms, including donating an item, delivering a need, offering encouragement, or simply showing up for a family during a difficult season.
"Every request is an opportunity to say yes. Every yes strengthens a family, supports a child, and reminds someone they are not alone. We've learned that while practical resources matter, what often makes the lasting difference is connection, encouragement, and people who are willing to walk alongside them.”
Churches and businesses can also get involved by starting a response team.
“No single organization can solve challenges like foster care and family instability alone. Caseworkers understand the needs. Churches bring relationships. Businesses contribute resources. Community members bring compassion and action. When those groups work together, they help ensure families are surrounded by community before isolation has the chance to deepen into crisis.”

How Sano Specialty Care helps athletes recover faster and stay in the game
For athletes, an injury can feel like more than just physical pain. It can mean missing games, losing a season, or watching teammates compete from the sidelines. At Sano Specialty Care, the goal isn't simply to treat an injury. It's to help patients safely return to the activities they love as quickly as possible.

When Gavin Laskey, a student at Shawnee Mission East, tore the meniscus in his right knee, his injury immediately put his active lifestyle on hold.
"I was no weight bearing for two weeks and had to end my track season before it started, as well as give up on any summer wrestling opportunities," Gavin says.
After treatment through Sano and surgery at Beacon, the physician-led outpatient surgery center located in the same building as the clinic, Gavin was back doing what he loves in just over two months.
"My experience at Sano was good because I was able to return to my sports after a little more than two months," he says.
For McDonald's All-American, USA Basketball team member and University of Texas recruit Addison Bjorn, an injury threatened much more than a season. It put her scholarship opportunities, future career and ability to compete at the next level at risk.
"I expected an injury to slow me down and keep me off the court for a while, but Sano was focused on finding ways to help me recover and get back to 100%. They made the whole process a lot less stressful than I expected," Addison says.
She credits the care team's communication and guidance with giving her the confidence to continue competing throughout her recovery.
"The biggest thing was the trust I had in my medical team," she says. "They explained everything clearly, monitored my progress closely, and made sure I was ready before every step back onto the court."
For Addison, being able to stay active during recovery meant everything.
"It meant everything. As an athlete, you put so much work into your season, and for me it wasn't just about getting back on the court. It was about protecting the opportunities I'd worked so hard for and making sure I could continue pursuing my career at the next level instead of watching from the sidelines," she says.
She says her treatment plan allowed her to continue progressing instead of putting her season completely on hold.
"The treatment plan was great as I was able to return to competition in a reasonable time frame," Addison says. "It allowed me to practice, compete, and continue improving while my body healed instead of having to completely shut things down for months."
Luke Franke, a Leawood resident preparing to attend Kansas State University, experienced a similar journey after suffering a bucket-handle meniscus tear.
"The injury affected me very heavily because before I was really active and would do a lot of different activities in my free time," Luke says. "When I got hurt there was nothing for me to do but rest."
Luke first visited one of Sano's orthopedic walk-in clinics, where Dr. Witte immediately suspected a meniscus tear. An MRI quickly confirmed the diagnosis, and surgery was scheduled at Beacon, allowing treatment to move forward without unnecessary delays.
Today, Luke is back to enjoying recreational basketball, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and an active lifestyle.
"Being able to return to my activities has helped my confidence," he says. "It's really hard to stay positive when you're stuck on crutches and just have to watch. Being able to get back has helped a tremendous amount."
According to Sano's physicians, stories like Gavin's, Luke's and Addison's illustrate why early orthopedic care matters so much for young athletes.

"When an injury occurs, it doesn't just impact them physically," Dr. Daggett says. "It can interrupt routines, team dynamics and a sense of momentum they've worked hard to build."
Receiving specialized orthopedic care early not only helps ensure the injury is diagnosed correctly from the start, but can also improve recovery time while giving athletes and their families confidence throughout the healing process.
Looking back, Addison believes receiving specialized care made a significant difference in her season.
"Without the care I received, I probably would have missed a part of the season and definitely wouldn't have been able to perform at the level I expected from myself," she says. "It gave me the opportunity to keep contributing to my team while preserving the opportunity to continue my career at the next level."
She also has simple advice for other athletes facing an injury.
"Don't ignore it, and don't try to tough it out on your own," Addison says. "Find a medical team you trust, follow the treatment plan, and be patient with the process. Getting the right care early can make a huge difference in your recovery and your ability to keep competing."

There is something special about walking into a restaurant that instantly makes you want to linger. At Casa Ama, that feeling is by design.The newest concept from Billie’s Grocery owner Robin Krause, Casa Ama brings a fresh perspective to Kansas City's dining scene with modern Mexican inspired cuisine, vibrant design, and a hospitality-first approach that invites guests to settle in for an evening of great food, cocktails, and conversation.
"It felt like the right moment creatively for Robin," says Marie Effertz, Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy for Casa Ama. "Billie's Grocery has such a strong identity in the daytime space, and Casa Ama gave her the opportunity to explore a different side of hospitality with dinner, drinks, music, atmosphere, and staying out a little longer."
The name itself sets the tone. Loosely translated as "the house that loves," Casa Ama reflects the team's vision of creating more than just a restaurant.
"To us, 'the house that loves' means creating a place where people feel genuinely cared for," Effertz says. "A place that feels welcoming, lively, full of warmth, and one that you want to return to time and time again."
While Kansas City is already home to an impressive collection of Mexican restaurants, Casa Ama isn't trying to replicate what's already here. Instead, the restaurant offers its own thoughtful interpretation of Mexican inspired cuisine by honoring traditional flavors while incorporating carefully selected global influences.
“We’ve explored new techniques, ingredients, and culinary traditions from around the world, and that curiosity naturally carried into Casa Ama.”
"Our menu is rooted in a genuine appreciation for Mexican flavors and traditions," Krause explains. "We honor those foundations while thoughtfully incorporating complementary ingredients and techniques from around the world."
Those influences come together in unexpected but balanced ways, like sesame oil paired with Mexican chiles or soy ginger glaze served alongside citrus chile sauce on whole fish. The result is a menu that feels both familiar and full of discovery.
The culinary philosophy grew naturally from years of teaching cooking classes at Billie’s Grocery.
"Every class has been an opportunity not only to teach, but also to keep learning ourselves," Krause says. "We've explored new techniques, ingredients, and culinary traditions from around the world, and that curiosity naturally carried into Casa Ama."
Guests will find bright, shareable dishes inspired not only by Mexico, but also the Southwest, the Mediterranean, Italy, and parts of Asia. From fresh aguachiles and ceviches to grilled meats, vibrant vegetable dishes, and whole fish, the menu encourages gathering around the table.
For first time visitors, Krause already has a game plan.
"The fajitas are definitely a signature dish," she says. "I'd also tell people not to skip the Pollo en Mole or shrimp coctel and one of our Casa-rita cocktails. The menu really shines when the table has a mix of fresh, smoky, savory, and citrusy flavors happening all at once."
Among all the dishes, the Pollo en Mole holds a particularly meaningful place.
"I spent months working on it because I knew it had to feel right," Krause says. "I studied recipes from different regions of Mexico, tested countless variations, and experimented with everything from different types of bread and tortillas to seven kinds of chocolate."
That careful attention to detail extends well beyond the kitchen. Designed in collaboration with Stephanie Agne of Retreat Interiors, Casa Ama balances clean, modern design with warmth and personality. White brick, handcrafted ceramics, colorful blue tile, lush greenery, and warm wood create an atmosphere that feels both elevated and comfortable. The space will continue evolving with handcrafted textiles and artwork sourced from Mexico City, giving it a collected feel inspired by travel rather than imitation.
"I wanted Casa Ama to feel collected rather than copied, with layers that tell a story," Krause says.
Hospitality remains the foundation that ties every detail together.
"Great food and beautiful design bring people in, but it's how they are treated that makes them want to come back," Krause says. "Every day we're refining, listening, and finding new ways to make the experience better and make guests feel more at home."
That commitment extends to accommodating a variety of dining preferences. Most of the menu is naturally gluten free, and guests will also find several vegetarian options, including a mushroom taco featuring mushroom tofu pâté and morita salsa roja, along with flavorful vegetable fajitas.
Although Casa Ama has only recently opened, the team already has exciting plans ahead. Weekend brunch, Sunday service, and the opening of the Agave Room for private celebrations are all on the horizon.
"We're just getting started," Krause says. "My hope is that Casa Ama becomes more than just a place to eat. It's a place where people gather and celebrate life's moments."

Dr. Jeff Thompson: Not anymore. Adults now make up more than 30% of our patients. Clear aligners like Invisalign® and lingual braces have made treatment much more discreet and convenient. Many adults are also surprised to learn that teeth naturally shift over time, even if they had braces years ago, so retreatment is very common.
Q: WHAT'S THE BIGGEST ADVANCEMENT YOU'VE SEEN IN ORTHODONTICS?
Treatment is more comfortable and efficient than ever. Advances in clear aligners, wire technology and bracket design have given patients more options with less discomfort and often shorter treatment times. Most comprehensive treatments now take about 18 to 24 months.
Q: WHEN SHOULD CHILDREN HAVE THEIR FIRST ORTHODONTIC EVALUATION?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends age 7, and I agree. Early evaluations allow us to identify developing bite or crowding issues before they become more complicated. In some cases, early treatment can reduce the need for extractions or more extensive treatment later.
