Letter from the Editor

As spring arrives, April feels like an invitation to a fresh start. There is something about this season that encourages us to think about what we want to nurture moving forward. April is our “investment” issue, not just in the financial sense, but in how we choose to spend our time, energy and attention. When we invest in the things that truly matter, including our relationships, our health, and the things that bring purpose and joy to our lives, we create a life that feels fulfilling.
For some of us, myself included, leaving time for investing in ourselves can go by the wayside, because we are caring for others. Investing in ourselves takes intention. It can involve setting boundaries around our time, allowing ourselves time to relax, putting energy into friendships, and choosing healthy habits. As a mother of 4, I have spent years pouring my time and energy into my family, nurturing and guiding my children so they feel loved and prepared for the world. That is still where the majority of my focus is, even as my children grow into young adults. I care deeply about creating a home that feels strong, steady, and full of love. At the same time, this season of life is opening up new space for other things, as I am not as busy with sports and carpools. I am learning to invest more in my own health, spending more time with family and friends, and learning to embrace downtime.
This month, let’s think about where our time and energy are going. Are they aligned with what matters most to us? Are we giving ourselves any time to recharge in the midst of the chaos of our schedules? As you read through this issue, I hope it encourages you to think about what is worth your energy right now, and to make space for it in whatever way you can.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL
An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

BEYOND THE CANVAS

WHERE
ART MEETS INVESTMENT

Art has the power to completely transform a space, both visually and emotionally. The right piece doesn’t just fill a wall but anchors a room, sets the tone, and tells the story of a life lived within it. According to Megan Hoban, owner and curator of Prairiebrooke Arts, original art brings depth, personality, and intention into a home in a way nothing else can.
"We live in a world where we’re constantly tempted to buy something new that catches our eye,” says Hoban. “We buy what we love. Collecting original art should feel the same way."
And yet, for many people, art feels different--it’s more of a challenge.
"If you’re new to buying art, it can feel intimidating. It’s often a bigger purchase, and there’s that lingering question of what if I choose the wrong piece? The good news is there is no perfect formula. Art is personal. If something stops you in your tracks, makes you feel something, or keeps popping back into your mind after you’ve left the gallery, that’s usually your answer.”
Collecting begins when you discover art you love.

"Some people are drawn to bold, colorful abstracts that energize a room. Others fall in love with peaceful landscapes, expressive figurative work, or striking photography. Many collectors discover they love a mix of styles. Your taste doesn’t have to fit into one neat category. In fact, the most interesting homes and offices rarely do. Over time, you’ll notice patterns, certain color palettes, textures, or subjects that consistently draw you in. That’s the beginning of your personal collection.”
While art can appreciate financially, Hoban encourages clients to think about investment differently.
"People often ask whether art is a good investment. The answer really depends on how you define investment. Purchasing a work by someone like Pablo Picasso represents one kind of financial investment and appeals to a very specific type of collector. For most people, however, the true return is far more personal. Art has the power to elevate your daily life in simple but meaningful ways--introducing color, evoking memories, and bringing lasting character into your space."

That return shows up in quiet, everyday moments, like the way light moves across a canvas or the feeling a piece brings into a room.
"When you fall in love with a piece, you’re investing in that feeling every single day. The way the light hits the surface in the morning. The texture of paint that seems to lift off the canvas. The sense of calm or energy it brings to a space. It’s a different kind of return on investment.”
For those who are thinking long-term, Hoban also encourages a thoughtful approach: choose pieces that genuinely resonate with you rather than chasing trends, pay attention to how the work complements your space, and protect your investment with professional framing and proper documentation. Keeping
artist information and purchase records organized not only preserves value but also preserves the story behind the work.
"Don’t buy art based on trends or what is easy. Choose work you’ll love living with and elevate your space. But above all, trust your instincts."
Art also has the power to shape a room rather than simply finish it.
"If you truly love a piece, you’ll find a place for it. Sometimes the art even becomes the starting point for a room’s design. Art uniquely has the power to pull together at eye level all the design elements into something original and fabulous!”
For homeowners building, remodeling, or refreshing a space, Hoban recommends planning for art early.

“A MEANINGFUL COLLECTION DOESN’T ALWAYS HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. IT GROWS WITH YOU. MAYBE IT STARTS WITH ONE PIECE THAT FEELS SPECIAL, OR SEVERAL PIECES THAT MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME.”
"If you are remodeling or building a new home or growing a business into new corporate space, I always suggest making a line item for art in the budget. By allocating money to art, you are making it a key component to the project and ensuring it's not an afterthought with no money left when the project is complete.”
Once you’ve chosen a piece, presentation matters.
"Framing is another key detail to consider when purchasing artwork. Think of custom framing as the jewelry for your artwork. A thoughtfully chosen frame enhances the piece and protects it at the same time. Archival materials and UV-protective glass help preserve color and quality so the artwork can last for generations.”
Ultimately, collecting art is about creating spaces that feel like your personality.
"Your home should not look like your neighbors or a social media post. Your office should not feel generic. Original art brings individuality to both. It reflects your story, your travels, your milestones, and your taste.”
A collection should be curated as your life evolves.
"A meaningful collection doesn’t always happen overnight. It grows with you. Maybe it starts with one piece that feels special, or several pieces that make your house a home. Over time, your walls begin to tell a story that’s entirely your own. Falling in love with art isn’t about being an expert or making an investment. When you find a piece that makes you pause, smile, or feel something unexpected, that’s where your collection begins."

ROOTED RETURNS:

Investing in Your Home and Community with Rosehill Gardens
ARTICLE BY JAMIE SEGALL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
For more than 60 years, Rosehill Gardens has shaped the look and feel of Leawood and the surrounding Kansas City area. What began as a local landscape business has grown into a trusted name synonymous with beautiful outdoor spaces and long-term community investment.
“I think being so close to the state line and always being known as the best landscape company in Kansas City has made us synonymous with Leawood, which we think of as one of the best areas of Kansas City as well,” says owner Curtis Stroud.
That legacy was built season after season, yard after yard, by helping homeowners make smart, lasting decisions. Rosehill offers a timely reminder that your landscape is not just an expense, it is an asset.
“Investment in gardening is as much about what you put in and how you put it in as it is just adding dollars to your yard,” Stroud says. “If done right the investment can continue to pay you and your yard back in more ways than just financial.”
Spring and early summer are prime planting seasons in Kansas City, but timing and plant selection matter. Rosehill curates what it calls the Rosehill Top 100, a collection of native and hardy plants proven to thrive in our climate. “Late winter and early spring are excellent months for planting all of the items on our top 100,” Stroud says. These selections help ensure homeowners are planting with confidence, not guesswork.
He continues, “This is the time of year everyone comes out of hiding and feels the need to start planting and sprucing up their yard,” he says. Big box retailers compete to get plants on shelves early, but those plants are often not grown locally and may not be ready for our soil and temperatures. “Homeowners make the mistake of sometimes getting anxious to get started and buy those plants when our climate says wait another month.”
The better approach is to treat your yard like a long-term portfolio and start with a plan. While online inspiration can help spark ideas, Stroud advises balance.

“The internet and AI can tell you a lot these days. Don’t rely too heavily on that though. It can give you as much bad advice as good, but it’s not a bad starting point.”
Rosehill’s team works with homeowners to design landscapes tailored to their goals and property conditions. “We come out and give advice on where to start and will design it for you with the knowledge of what you are trying to get accomplished and what plants and landscaping will get that done,” he says.
Over the years, Rosehill has evolved alongside its customers. The company now offers expanded hardscaping services, computer aided designs and even 3D renderings. But the core has not changed. “Everything comes back to the same questions and solutions, and quality of service and homegrown plants. It’s only the presentation that has changed.”
That spirit of thoughtful reinvention is also on display at Rosehill Winery in Martin City. Recognizing that they could not compete with large retailers on sheer inventory, the team reimagined their space into something experiential.
“We recognized that we had a beautiful space and location but just couldn’t provide the variety and quantity to compete with the larger retailers so we redesigned our space into what we thought people would come to us for and that was our ability to create an ambiance people would want to enjoy,” Stroud says. Pair that ambiance with deep wine expertise, and the result is a destination that extends the Rosehill brand beyond the garden bed.
Today, visitors can still find potted plants and unique items at the winery, but they also find something more. It is a place to gather, relax and connect. It is another example of Rosehill investing back into the community by creating spaces that enrich everyday life.
Looking ahead, Stroud says the future is about people. “There are always a few people who come and go but we have many employees with years of experience and many just starting their careers. The one thing they both have in common is they love the outdoors and plants, and that’s something AI can’t take away.”
For homeowners, investing in your yard this season means planting wisely and partnering locally. For the community, supporting a business that has spent more than 60 years investing here helps ensure that Leawood continues to bloom for generations to come.

The Long Pour:

Investing in Quality, Community, and a Family Name
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE
JONES
In Kansas City, the name J. Rieger & Co. carries history. For Andy Rieger, it also carries responsibility.
Reviving his family’s distillery was never about nostalgia. It was about finishing what was interrupted. His great-great-great-grandfather, Jacob Rieger, built one of the largest distilleries in the country before Prohibition shut it down in 1919. For decades, the business lived only as a family story. In 2010, after his father passed away, Rieger realized the legacy would either continue through him or end with him.
“It never felt like starting a company,” he says. “It felt like finishing a sentence that got cut off in 1919.”
What began as a revival quickly became something more. There was no inherited infrastructure, no building, no customers. Rieger describes the early days as a true startup, vacuuming a 15,000 square foot warehouse at three in the morning with little more than conviction. The family history served as a compass. When your name is on the bottle, shortcuts are not an option.
From the beginning, the goal was not to create a precious, niche luxury brand. Jacob Rieger built whiskey meant to be enjoyed regularly. Quality without pretension. That philosophy still guides the company today. Rather than recreate 19th century formulas for the sake of preservation, Rieger rebuilt the products for modern drinkers.
“If we only preserved the formula, we would be protecting a story instead of serving a drinker,” he says. The ambition is simple. Become the favorite bottle on the shelf, not the one saved for special occasions.
That commitment to quality has defined the company’s growth. The vodka program is overseen by a former master distiller of Smirnoff. The gin program is led by the former master distiller of Tanqueray and creator of Tanqueray No. 10.
The whiskey program began with the former master distiller of Maker’s Mark. The whiskeys run through two stills over two days, doubling labor and cost, but improving the final product. Rieger often points out that better does not have to mean
expensive. His $30 Bourbon has earned national recognition while remaining accessible.
In 2025, respected critic Fred Minnick named J. Rieger & Co. the top independent whiskey distiller in the country and later included its $30 Bourbon in his Top 100 list. It was the most affordable bottle on that list. For Rieger, moments like that signal progress. “If you keep doing the right things long enough, people notice,” he says.
Today, the company’s bottles are distributed in more than two dozen states. Yet Rieger has never viewed expansion as an excuse to distance the brand from Kansas City. The original distillery operated here from 1887 until Prohibition. Rebuilding in the same city was not optional. It was foundational.
“This has always been and always will be our hometown,” he says. “Because of that, we want our hometown to have the best reputation in the country.”
That mindset shapes how he thinks about community investment. The company’s campus is a major historic renovation in the East Bottoms, complete with multiple bars, restaurants, and even a slide. It may never produce the kind of financial

“The goal is to be known as the highest quality distilled spirits producer in America while remaining affordable.”
return a spreadsheet would prefer. But to Rieger, that is beside the point. Someone had to go first.
“If investment only follows what the market can give a standard return on, nothing changes,” he says. “We chose the long road.”
The bet was that quality, combined with visible commitment, would help reset expectations for what Kansas City could build. Now developers and distilleries from outside the region visit the campus before planning their own projects. The risk of going first has become part of the city’s momentum.
Rieger is clear that being local is not the selling point. “Local should not be the reason you choose something. Quality should.” Outside Kansas City, he notes, no one buys a bottle out of civic loyalty. The product has to stand on its own next to names like Tito’s, Tanqueray, Maker’s Mark, and Buffalo Trace. When it does, hometown pride follows naturally.
Leadership, in his view, is less about authority and more about stewardship. Hundreds of families now rely on the company for a paycheck. Acting inconsistently would reflect not only on the brand, but on everyone connected to it. “When your name is on it you choose what it stands for,” he says. He chose quality.
As he looks ahead 10 to 20 years, Rieger’s ambition is measured but clear. Healthy growth. Perhaps two or three times larger. Still affordable. Still uncompromising. “The goal is to be known as the highest quality distilled spirits producer in America while remaining affordable,” he says. “That feels very Kansas City.”
For an April issue focused on investment, Rieger’s story offers a broader definition of the term. Investment is not only capital deployed for return. It is belief in a neighborhood before it is proven. It is choosing higher standards even when they cost more. It is restoring a family name not for sentiment, but for substance.
When asked what he hopes people say about his chapter of the Rieger story, his answer is straightforward. That the rebuild was difficult, creative, and worth it. And that Kansas City embraced it enough to keep it alive.

A NEW WAY TO SOLVE Moisture Problems IN YOUR HOME
There’s a certain musty, damp scent that instantly tells you something isn’t right in your home. It’s that smell that lingers in basements, clings to stored boxes, and quietly signals that moisture is winning. For many homeowners, that smell feels like an unsolvable mystery. You run a dehumidifier, repaint, try waterproof coatings, but the dampness always seems to return. That’s where Renodry USA comes in. Simply put, Renodry dries out buildings from the inside out.
Most assume moisture problems come from obvious sources, like a leaky pipe, a cracked window seal, or a heavy rainstorm. While those things certainly contribute, there’s another culprit many don’t realize is at work--moisture rising up from the ground itself. Over time, water naturally moves upward through masonry and foundation materials. This process, often referred to as rising damp, allows moisture and the salts it carries to travel into walls, floors, and structural materials. Left untreated, it can slowly weaken a home’s foundation and create the perfect environment for mold and mildew. Painting over damp walls or applying waterproof coatings may temporarily improve appearance, but they don’t stop the moisture from continuing to rise. Without addressing the source, the problem remains inside the walls. Instead of masking the symptoms, Renodry focuses on eliminating moisture at its source. Unlike traditional restoration or remediation companies that rely on fans, dehumidifiers, or invasive
construction, Renodry uses a small, wall-mounted device that works continuously to release trapped moisture from within building materials. There’s no drilling, no chemicals, and no tearing into walls. Once installed, the system begins drying the structure immediately without even using electricity. Many report noticing a difference, especially the disappearance of musty odors, within the first 24 hours. Depending on how saturated the walls are, complete drying can take several months, but the process is steady and ongoing. The unit remains in the home permanently, helping prevent moisture from returning. As long as the system is in place, it continues protecting the structure.
Moisture doesn’t just impact brick and concrete. When walls are damp, that moisture is absorbed by other materials inside the home, like wood floors, sheetrock, fabrics, stored heirlooms, artwork, and important documents. Over time, excess moisture can lead to deterioration, staining, warping, and decay. By removing moisture from the entire structure, not just the air, Renodry helps preserve what’s inside the home as well. For historic properties, the stakes are even higher. Since 2016, Renodry has worked extensively with courthouses, universities, and landmark buildings across multiple states, helping preserve architectural history by protecting foundations from long-term moisture damage. Now, they are bringing that same technology into residential homes.

Beyond structural concerns, moisture also affects the air you breathe. Mold requires moisture to survive. Remove the moisture, and mold cannot thrive. Damp environments are known to contribute to indoor air quality concerns, including mold growth, allergens, and airborne irritants that may aggravate asthma and other respiratory sensitivities. Homeowners often notice fresher air and fewer musty smells after installation. Customers frequently share that their homes simply feel cleaner and more comfortable once excess moisture is removed.
One of the biggest misconceptions about moisture control is that adding another dehumidifier will solve the issue. Traditional dehumidifiers treat the humidity in the air, known as atmospheric moisture, but don’t remove the moisture embedded deep within walls, foundations, and structural materials. This is why some homes can feel dry on the surface but still carry a lingering musty smell. Renodry’s approach focuses on releasing material moisture, or the water trapped inside the building itself.
Proudly veteran-owned and family-operated, Renodry USA began working primarily with commercial and historic buildings and has now expanded into the residential market. With more than 100 buildings successfully treated across multiple states, the company’s mission is simple: protect structures, preserve investments, and create healthier indoor environments. Every device is backed by a lifetime warranty, offering long-term confidence in the system’s performance and durability. For homeowners in Leawood and beyond, Renodry offers a new way to think about moisture, not as a recurring headache, but as a solvable issue.

Ask The Expert
The Benefits of IV Therapy from Gillett Health
Q: FOR READERS WHO ARE NEW TO IT, WHAT EXACTLY IS IV THERAPY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
A: Intravenous (IV) therapy is the administration of fluids, electrolytes, vitamins, or medications directly into the bloodstream through a vein. Because it enters systemic circulation immediately, it allows for rapid delivery and precise dosing. IV therapy has long been used in hospitals and outpatient settings for hydration, electrolyte replacement, medication administration, and correction of nutritional deficiencies.
Q: IV THERAPY BYPASSES THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. WHY DOES THAT MATTER?
A: When nutrients are taken orally, they must pass through the gastrointestinal tract and liver before entering systemic circulation. Absorption can vary based on gut health, medications, illness, nutrient interactions, and individual differences. IV delivery bypasses this process, resulting in complete bioavailability and more predictable serum levels. This can be especially useful in cases of dehydration, malabsorption, significant nausea or vomiting, iron deficiency requiring rapid correction, or when quick repletion is clinically appropriate.
“IV therapy provides immediate systemic availability and can achieve higher serum concentrations in a controlled medical setting.”
Q: HOW DOES IV THERAPY DIFFER FROM SIMPLY TAKING VITAMINS OR SUPPLEMENTS AT HOME?
A: Oral supplements rely on gastrointestinal absorption, which can be inconsistent and limited by physiological regulatory mechanisms. IV therapy provides immediate systemic availability and can achieve higher serum concentrations in a controlled medical setting. It is best viewed as a targeted clinical intervention rather than a replacement for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Q: IF SOMEONE IS ALREADY FEELING UNDER THE WEATHER, CAN IV THERAPY HELP THEM RECOVER FASTER?
A: In certain situations, yes. If symptoms are related to dehydration, poor sleep, or nutritional deficits, IV fluids and nutrients may help improve fatigue, headache, dizziness, and general malaise. The benefit is often supportive rather than curative and tends to be most helpful when correcting a specific deficiency or physiologic imbalance.
Q: ARE THERE SPECIFIC VITAMINS OR NUTRIENTS THAT ARE ESPECIALLY HELPFUL FOR IMMUNE SUPPORT?
A: Vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, and certain B vitamins all play roles in immune regulation. Iron may also be important if a deficiency is present. In clinical practice, supplementation is most effective when it addresses a documented insufficiency rather than using a one-sizefits-all approach. Evidence for high-dose IV formulations varies depending on the condition being treated.
Q: HOW CAN IV THERAPY HELP ATHLETES OR PEOPLE WHO WORK OUT REGULARLY?
A: IV therapy may assist with hydration and electrolyte balance, which are critical for muscle function and neuromuscular signaling. It can be helpful when oral rehydration is ineffective or impractical, or in cases of significant dehydration. However, some sports organizations restrict IV therapy use without a therapeutic
exemption, and it should not replace proper training, nutrition, and recovery practices.
Q: WHAT ROLE DOES HYDRATION PLAY IN OVERALL WELLNESS, AND WHY IS IT SO EFFECTIVE WHEN DELIVERED INTRAVENOUSLY?
A : Hydration is essential for cognitive and physical performance. IV therapy directly hydrates.
Q: HOW QUICKLY DO PATIENTS FEEL RESULTS, AND HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS LAST?
A : Minutes to hours. Simple hydration benefits last for days, but something like correcting iron or copper deficiency lasts for months.
Q: MANY PEOPLE ASSOCIATE IV THERAPY WITH ANTI-AGING. HOW CAN IT SUPPORT HEALTHY AGING AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL?
A : It is overrated for longevity, but it can help you feel more energetic, and those at advanced ages have lower bioavailability of oral supplements, so it is often more useful in older age categories.
Q: CAN IV THERAPY HELP WITH STRESS OR MENTAL FATIGUE?
A : Not directly, but it can help improve sleep and decrease food cravings related to nutritional insufficiencies.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS CURIOUS BUT HESITANT TO TRY IT FOR THE FIRST TIME?
A : Be hesitant about therapies which seem gimmicky or non-standard. Message us with questions or schedule a consultation to discuss what benefit you seek.
Q: WHAT IS THE CONTACT INFORMATION FOR READERS TO SCHEDULE AN IV THERAPY CONSULTATION WITH GILLETT HEALTH?
A : Phone# (913) 356-1007

STEMS: A GARDEN SOIRÉE BLOOMS EARLIER IN 2026
One of Overland Park’s most beloved fundraisers will arrive a little earlier next year. Stems: A Garden Soirée, the signature event supporting the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, will move to May in 2026, giving guests the chance to celebrate while the gardens are at their springtime peak.
Organizers say the shift better aligns the event with the natural beauty of the season. Late spring at the Arboretum brings vibrant color, fresh blooms, and comfortable evening temperatures. Guests can wander the garden paths with a drink in hand, enjoy live music, and sample dishes from local restaurants while surrounded by flowers and greenery.

The earlier date also helps the event stand apart from a busy summer calendar. With the region preparing to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the Kansas City metro, organizers say “blooming early” allows Stems to shine before the area’s large summer events begin.
The gardens themselves will provide a spectacular backdrop. Beds of colorful annuals like snapdragons, pansies, osteospermum, dianthus, and calendula will be in bloom, along with spring bulbs including alliums, late tulips, and daffodils. If the season cooperates, guests may also spot pink peonies near Margaret’s Pond and bright red poppies in the Arboretum’s Monet Garden. Early summer perennials such as salvia, catmint, and baptisia will add texture and layers of color throughout the landscape.
While many favorite traditions remain, a few new experiences will debut in 2026. A large main stage returns to the gardens with a lively performance from Funk Syndicate, while a fashion sketch artist will capture guests’ garden party outfits as one-of-a-kind keepsakes.
Another guest favorite is also returning: hand-painted souvenir wine glasses.
This year, 15 local artists will create designs ranging from butterflies and wildflowers to colorful abstract patterns, allowing guests to choose a glass that reflects their style and carry it throughout the evening.
New this year, a silent auction will feature experience-based items connected to community spaces. Guests can bid on photography sessions at the Arboretum or the Farmstead, or even take home a complete set of the collectible Stems glasses.

Food and drink remain central to the experience. Restaurants from across the Kansas City metro will offer tasting bites designed for an evening in the gardens. Participating favorites include Bo Lings, JINYA Ramen Bar, Zephyr Bourbon Bar + Kitchen, and Taco Naco KC, along with newcomer Tiki Taco. Guests can expect everything from savory street tacos and crispy beef to sweet desserts.
Entertainment will be woven throughout the gardens with additional bands, roaming performers, balloon artists, and tarot readings. The evening concludes with a fireworks display over the illuminated landscape.
Stems is the signature fundraiser for the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens Foundation, supporting projects and programming at both the Arboretum and Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. Proceeds help sustain the partnerships, fundraising efforts, and behind-the-scenes work that bring educational programs, garden enhancements, and community experiences to life.
Stems is a 21+ event. Tickets are available at stemssoiree.org, with early bird pricing through April 1.

A Community Built for Every Ability
On 64 acres in Olathe, a visionary development is taking shape that promises to redefine what inclusion looks like in the Midwest. At the center of it all is Michael’s Wonder World, an ultra-inclusive, all abilities theme park designed so that all people, including children and adults with special needs can experience the joy of play without barriers. Surrounding it will be a state-of-the-art sports arena, an accessible hotel, restaurants and retail, all thoughtfully designed to serve families who are too often overlooked in traditional developments.
Michael’s Wonder World is more than a park. It is a fully inclusive environment where rides are wheelchair accessible, sensory considerations are built into the design, and families navigating complex medical or developmental needs can relax instead of constantly planning for obstacles. Admission for individuals with disabilities will be free, ensuring that cost is not another barrier to joy.
Directly across from the park will stand the Halo Care Collective at Halo Ridge, a collaborative hub bringing medical providers, therapists, nonprofit organizations and family support services together under one roof. If the park represents celebration and recreation, the Collective represents care, coordination and long term support for the entire family.

James Arkell, son in law of Lamar Hunt Jr., has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. But he is quick to point out that Halo Ridge is not about one family name. It is about community.
“This was built by the people, for the people,” Arkell says. “No matter who you are, you can bring something to the table. We’re not asking for a lot. We’re asking, what can you give?”
Halo Ridge is specifically designed for families with special needs, particularly those caring for children or adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today, these families often juggle appointments scattered across the metro. A dental specialist may be in one city, an adaptive equipment provider in another, a therapist somewhere else entirely. Every trip requires equipment, time off work and careful coordination.
Arkell explains, “This is about making it convenient and accessible. And by keeping whole families healthier, that’s better for everyone.”

The Halo Care Collective will bring together optometry, dentistry, occupational and physical therapy, durable medical equipment providers, mental health professionals and much more. Families will be able to schedule multiple services in one location. Siblings will have access to counseling and support groups. Parents will find financial planning and legal resources, including pro bono guidance on guardianship and disability related planning that can otherwise cost thousands of dollars.
Approximately 75 percent of the first floor will be shared, welcoming space. There will be classrooms for peer mentoring and certifications, a comfortable reception area, and a café style gathering space that doubles as a job training kitchen lab. The goal is to make families feel supported, not sidelined in sterile waiting rooms.

The building itself has been secured through a generous lease arrangement with Karbank Real Estate. Even with reduced rental rates for clinical partners, significant fundraising is required to cover operational costs and allow nonprofit organizations to occupy space at little to no charge. The Halo Care Collective operates as a 501(c)(3), and donations are tax deductible.
Corporate partners are stepping forward. Private donors are contributing. But Arkell believes the long-term sustainability of Halo Ridge depends on broad community participation.
“There aren’t as many seven and eight figure gifts as there used to be,” he explains. “We need smaller gifts that can be repetitive. Your $20 a month matters. There’s no gift too big and no gift too small. It’s a great opportunity for people who want to give and want to make sure the money is benefitting a number of charities rather than just one.”
Naming opportunities and legacy giving structures are available throughout the park, arena and care hub. At the same time, monthly contributions from families, local businesses and individuals will form the backbone of ongoing operations and hardship grants for families who need financial assistance for services, travel or equipment.
The impact will extend well beyond special needs families. The adjacent sports arena is projected to host tournaments and events that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The accessible hotel will provide accommodations tailored to families traveling with medical equipment. Retailers and restaurants throughout the corridor will benefit from increased traffic. Johnson County will feel the economic ripple effect.

Yet at its heart, this is about dignity.
“We want it to be something for everyone,” Arkell says. “We don’t want to focus simply on the individual. These are families. By helping one, we can’t leave the others behind.”
Kansas City has always prided itself on strong civic partnerships and generous philanthropy. Halo Ridge offers an opportunity to invest not only in growth, but in compassion. It is a chance to create a place where children with special needs can play freely, where parents can access coordinated care, and where siblings feel seen and supported.
For those looking to make a meaningful investment in the future of our community, Halo Ridge is an invitation. Whether through corporate sponsorship and giving, legacy giving or a modest monthly donation, every contribution helps build a more inclusive Kansas City.
