LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Cristine Lindholm | cristine.lindholm@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

The New Year symbolizes new beginnings. It also is a time where many of us aim to make different goals for health and wellness. In James Clear’s book Atomic Habits he suggests that our focus should be on our systems rather than our goals. Goals can set the direction that we want to take, but the systems we set are what bring progress. Habits are the compounded interest of self-improvement, and if we focus on getting 1 percent better everyday then that would account for a lot in the long run. This concept became very real to me over the past year as I set my goal and daily habits for health and remission. I have always prided myself on being incredibly healthy, so it came as a great surprise to me a year and a half ago when I was told that I had an autoimmune disease. This particular autoimmune condition can sometimes attack the eyes too, and that was what was happening in my circumstance. Losing my vision was not an option for me, so I decided I would do whatever it took to stop the progression of this condition and fight back. Let me tell you—it wasn’t easy. I needed drastic changes to help my body heal. After much research, I found a board certified physician who specializes in autoimmune conditions and also heavily concentrates on lifestyle and diet changes needed to help our bodies heal alongside traditional treatments. She bridged the gap between traditional medicine and nutritional and lifestyle changes that best promotes cellular repair. Following her very specific guidelines, I made immediate and very drastic changes to my diet, sleep habits, stress levels, exercise and allowed myself time for recreation—all of which were equally important to my healing. My endocrinologist (and ophthalmologist) allowed me to try this natural approach while closely monitoring my labs, and the results were astounding. Without medications I achieved full remission of my autoimmune condition and also stopped the attack on my eyes in just 7 months time. The determination and sacrifice that it took to choose this way of life every single day in order to heal has taught me that we are stronger than we think we are, and if we set our mind to do something, we can achieve it. Although health issues are not something I would wish on anyone, strangely the beauty of the journey was something I will cherish. The people that come alongside in support, my faith and the inner strength that we come to know about ourselves at a different level was a beautiful experience. If you are currently going through a difficult journey whether it is health related or not, I want to encourage you that you are stronger than your circumstance. Look for the light and love that surrounds you on your path, and if you are able to set habits that help you improve 1 percent every day, I promise you that you won’t regret it. Speak life over your situation. Your mindset and you words have power. I wish you all peace, love and health in this New Year. ANGEL A BROOCKERD, EDITOR @LEAWOODCIT YLIFEST YLE

Housewife Cafe & Bistro Housewife Cafe & Bistro features freshly made breads, pastries, desserts, breakfast and lunch, all made from scratch in a uniquely chic environment that makes you feel right at home. Owner Anna Sorge discovered her passion for baking and cooking as a stress reliever. “I started cooking seriously at home when I had my fourth child, a NICU baby who cried 12 hours a day, and I started baking as a way to relieve stress,” says Sorge. “I began to get really good and through social media developed a small following. In my career, I have held many jobs—I worked at Dean and Deluca for ten years, spent time in retail management at Nordstrom, Standard Style, and Trader Joe’s, then developed an underground restaurant in Michigan, a cheese and charcuterie board company, and started managing large scale catering and events. My last job was the general manager of a fine dining restaurant and cafe in Prairie Village. After being told by someone I respect and admire that they couldn’t believe a housewife like me could cook better than their executive chef, I knew it was time to open my own place. I had always dreamed of having my own brick and mortar but never had the guts to do it. I figured I wasn’t getting any younger and my four children needed to see their mom take a risk and pursue her dreams.”

If it’s your first time at Housewife, expect a warm welcome when you arrive, an unforgettably delicious snack or meal, and thanked as you leave. “We have a small but solid menu with offerings for everyone, including house-made gluten free multigrain bread. We are focused on the quality of the food and customer experience. We want every customer to feel like they’re walking into an extension of our home and we are here to take care of them and serve them some really great food. The almond croissant and fig, goat cheese, and honeycomb croissant are our top selling pastry items. Breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos fly out the door in the morning. Our avocado toast is the best in the entire city and our sandwiches are fantastic. We have a sandwich called “The Mayor” named in honor of Grandview’s Mayor—it has shaved turkey, provolone, thick cut bacon, chipotle mayo and apricot mustard toasted to perfection on our house-made focaccia bread and it’s our most popular sandwich. We also feature a scratch made soup every day that sells out if you don’t come before 1 or 2 p.m. My personal favorite is our olive toast. I make a lovely olive tapenade with pine nuts, Kalamata olives, basil and pecorino romano and it gets loaded on a large piece of toasted rustic bread with tomatoes, pickled red onion and micro greens.” It doesn’t stop there—venture next door to Housewife to her second brand-new business, Truman General, an ice cream shop and mercantile that opened in October of this year. “I make eight different ice creams from scratch including flavors like salted brown butter pecan, rosemary goat cheese, lemon olive oil, lavender sage, peppermint chocolate, vanilla, dark chocolate with whiskey, and strawberry made with 10 pounds of strawberries. We have a curated selection of gifts, packaged foods, books, cookbooks, candles, apothecary, toys, bulk candy, dried fruit and so much more. We care about investing in the city you’re in and Grandview needed a great breakfast and lunch spot as well as a general store and some amazing ice cream. So here we are. We have future dreams of opening a sporting club with Pickleball, bocce ball, vintage arcades and possibly a great upscale burger place as well. CONTINUED >

Let’s Talk About Our Kids’ Mental Health It was five years ago when Susie Gurley and her husband Dr. Dan Gurley, an orthopedic surgeon in Overland Park, received the call. They were on a golfing trip celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary

when an 8th grade school counselor contacted them to say their third son, Will, was considering suicide. “We missed all the signs,” Susie says. “If it can happen to us, it can happen to others, and we want to help.”

Susie started the Just A Mom podcast in 2022 after her personal experience parenting a child with mental illness. “I felt very alone and hopeless in the darkest days of Will’s battle,” Susie explains. “I also found few resources for parents to deal with a child who struggles with mental health issues. Almost every parent I’ve interviewed has told me the same thing. I want parents to know they’re not alone and there is hope.” After countless hours in therapy, intense outpatient treatment, medication, and life changes to battle anxiety, depression and suicide ideation, Will is doing well today and is a college sophomore studying musical theatre. Along the way, Will used his talents to reach out to others in a groundbreaking way. After watching Logic perform “1-800-273-8255” at the 2018 Grammy Awards, Will was inspired to use his love for music to help other teens. At only 15 years old, Will founded the You Matter Festival on August 11, 2018. Now in its sixth year, the youmatter festival.net has become a prominent local draw focusing on suicide prevention through live music, speakers and a mental health resource fair. Susie and Dan’s entire family, including their first son, Jeff; daughter, Olivia; their spouses (and even their spouses’ families) are all actively involved. “As I think about standing at the top of the stadium as Will first shared his story with 1,000 people, I remember how terrified I was,” Susie states. “I was afraid of being a bad mom and being judged. I felt shame for having a mentally ill child who wanted to end his life at points. My husband and I had kept Will’s struggle to ourselves for months. But just the opposite happened after that night. Will became a

local teen spokesperson, helping break down the stigma of teens talking about mental health. He was interviewed on the local news, featured in a local magazine and newspaper, asked to speak to teen groups, and to serve on a local campaign to end teen suicide in our area.” Susie recalls how after taking Will to record a video for the zeroreasonswhy.org campaign, she was asked to also do a video. “I had come a long way about sharing our story, but make a video? Me? What did I have to say that was important? I’m not a therapist, counselor or doctor. I’m just a mom.” But Susie agreed in hopes that one or two people could be helped. A few days after the video released, her husband saw on Facebook that it had received more than 10,000 views. “I was shocked and perplexed. I didn’t think I had much to contribute or anything special to say. But my husband and I realized that parents weren’t talking about their kids’ mental health problems. That is exactly why I started the ‘Just a Mom’ podcast. I want to share the real stories of moms and dads who have walked the lonely, scary road of parenting a child with mental illness. I want them to hear that we got through it and that our child is still here, and he’s (mostly) thriving.” Susie says she initially struggled with the idea of “putting herself out there” and the possible misconceptions about her motives. “But my motive is simple: this message is too important not to be shared, and a void needs to be filled. I remind myself of this every day—it’s not about me, it’s about the message.” That message is resonating with listeners who appreciate the honesty, vulnerability and intimacy.

“I want parents to know they’re not alone and

there is hope.”

“I encourage young parents to listen so they can have conversations about mental health starting at a young age.”

“I felt like I was right there with you, and you were talking to just me,” says one listener. “It’s relaxed and casual but also serious which makes it less intimidating than if it were more clinical.” After more than 3,300 downloads of 13 episodes from the first season, Season 2 will begin on January 10, 2023. “I’ve learned a lot in Season 1,” Susie says. “I’m incorporating more interviews with professionals, experts and organizations to help share resources and empower parents.

Another huge takeaway is the realization that ANY parent could benefit from listening. So many things shared during interviews are things I wish I had known before my first child was born over 25 years ago. I encourage young parents to listen so they can have conversations about mental health starting at a young age.” For more information or to share your story, contact thejustamompodcast.com

THE BENEFITS OF PLANT BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A Plant-based diet still allows to you consume the Carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat

but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a Vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! TIPS to get started on your plant-based journey: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plants foods you already like. 2. Plant based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that

are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to you vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possible an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits than can add years to your life. The Foreshore of Fitness Dr. Anne Morgan Walks You Toward Health and Wellness ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S ELF CA R E | WEL L N ESS

On a recent trip to Mexico, Dr. Anne Morgan, Founder and CEO of Thrive Once More Integrative Wellness, was enjoying a simple walk on the beach when she realized how similar the path toward health is to that of walking the foreshore. “It’s that area of beach that’s the ‘sweet spot’ for walking,” she explains. “Move closer to the water, and you’ll get wet or knocked down by an occasional crashing wave. Walk further away, and you’re working much harder in the deeper, dry sand. The area in between is where I naturally walk, and I bet you do, too.” It’s a fitting parallel with our own health and wellness efforts. “On one hand, you have a traditional western medicine approach: prescription drugs, a onesize- fits-all recommended diet, accepting hypertension or diabetes as part of life,” she states. “Please believe me, I have the utmost respect for your primary care physician. Their guidance is rooted in research and ingrained from years of rigorous education. I know because I am one of those physicians. What I was taught in all my years of education was not wrong. However, there is absolutely more than this narrow view of healing our bodies.” On the other hand, we are inundated with “supplements, gadgets, alkaline water, exercise advice and the perfect diet. We consume this advice and purchase these products with the best intentions. We want to feel better!” That’s why Dr. Morgan believes it’s important to have someone “Navigate the Foreshore” of your health, and she is excited to be that physician for her patients—marrying her traditional training with an open mind and passion for alternative treatments that have the safest and biggest impact for her patients’ current health and future longevity.

“Come walk with me!” she adds. “I have navigated the foreshore and found the easiest path.” STEP 1: Schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation. If working together is a good fit, Dr. Morgan will schedule your initial evaluation and order your blood work. STEP 2: Schedule an initial 2-hour evaluation. Through this in-person assessment, you discuss your blood work results, unique goals and lifestyle habits and leave with a personalized treatment plan to optimize your health. STEP 3: Begin the 1-Year Vitality Program. With your personalized treatment plan, you have ongoing support, along with Dr. Morgan’s communication for a full year, including prescriptions and quarterly appointments. “We work together to develop a strategy to improve life,” Dr. Morgan says. “This can be different for each patient but often involves the building blocks of some prescriptions, supplements and support to encourage lifestyle changes. After a year in the Vitality Program, we switch to the Maintenance Program to keep up the success we’ve achieved.” Through bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, thyroid optimization and whole body health and nutrition, Dr. Morgan and her staff customize a treatment plan to optimize health. “The safety and efficacy of Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a passion of mine,” she says. “It isn’t for everyone, and I have turned patients away if they aren’t a good candidate, but most patients benefit tremendously from treatment with very low risk involved. It’s important to me that my patients understand what they’re taking and why. I want them to feel empowered to make a decision that is right for them.”

“Come walk with me!” she adds. “I have navigated the foreshore and found the easiest path.”

“We work together to develop a strategy to improve life. This can be different for each patient but often involves the building blocks of some prescriptions, supplements and support to encourage lifestyle changes. Another area Dr. Morgan helps navigate is supplements. “It can be really overwhelming to figure out what to take! I love helping people ‘streamline’ their supplements to save money and bring the biggest impact on their health and future quality of life. Vitamin D and a Probiotic can be foundational for health. I also recommend Nicotinamide Riboside to most patients over 40. If you haven’t heard about that yet, you will! All the pro-athletes are taking it, and the research is very convincing. It really increases the efficiency of every cell in your body.”

Dr. Morgan, a former ER doctor for 22 years, began Thrive Once More in 2019 after her own personal health battle. “I took a chance and invested in my own health and have never looked back. Discovering how much better I could feel prompted me to want to help patients discover the same success. I don’t take the place of your primary care physician. I am simply adjunct care to enhance your health in a different way. My desire is to help my patients not just live longer, but with more energy and health for decades to come.”

A new year is often a time of reflection and goal setting, and as an avid reader I always include a yearly reading goal. Lucky for us, 2023 promises to be another fantastic year for literature! It was hard to narrow down this list to just four books so if you would like to see more recommendations throughout the year, visit my Instagram page @downtogetthefictionon where I share what I’m reading or books I’m excited to read. When I started my page in May 2018, I never thought dedicating time and energy into reading would be such a life changing journey so I hope this year you find a book or hobby that makes you learn and brings new experiences or opportunities!

Young Adult

HIGHLY SUSCIPIOUS AND UNFAIRLY CUTE by Talia Hibbert (on sale January 3, 2023) Celine is a bright, hardworking, high schooler with a love for conspiracy theories and big goals to become a high-powered attorney. Bradley is the popular jock and also happens to be Celine’s ex-best friend who he ditched once his star began to rise. When life throws them into the same survival challenge there’s more than just their reputations and bragging rights on the line - there’s also a full-ride university scholarship! Will they continue to sling mud at one another or will time in the wilderness start to repair their once-close friendship?

Witty, smart and full of important topics, this YA book is one to add to your 2023 reading lists.

Romance

ROMANTIC COMEDY by Curtis Sittenfield (on sale April 11, 2023) Sally is a writer for the popular late-night sketch show “The Night Owls.” While Sally is happy at her dream job at TNO, her male co-workers have also found love with guest celebs widely out of their league. Always looking for the laugh, Sally writes a sketch mocking this phenomenon when Noah, a successful singer, is the host and musical guest for TNO. While Sally finds Noah’s music cheesy, throughout the week she starts to see a different side of him that makes her question her earlier impression and wonder if maybe this uber-famous heartthrob could be interested in a sweats-wearing tv writer but that’s not how this phenom works! Set between 2018-2023, the story takes you from behind the scenes at TNO to Sally’s time back in Kansas City with her stepdad during 2020 and beyond.

Kansas Citians will love the nods to our city and will be charmed by both Sally and Noah.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . 2. Hexbar - allows you to deadlift with a reduced risk of back injury. The weight is evenly dispersed around the body due to the hexagon shape and the raised handles reduce the range of motion where the lower-back is most vulnerable to flexion. 3. Garmin Forerunner 245 - This watches tracks sleep, stress levels, recovery, mileage, heart rate, and much more. This ensures I’m training at the right intensities for maximum gains and recovery from workouts properly. 4. TRX Straps - This simple piece of equipment allows me to hit nearly every muscle using Bodyweight strength and can be used anywhere. 5. Bowflex 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells - This compact all-in-one system replaces a full set of dumbbells that would cost $2000$5000. It also takes up 1/10 of the space. 6. Vinsguir Ab Roller - one of the most efficient exercises to build ab strength.
