LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor
November 2023 PUBLISHER
Cristine Lindholm | cristine.lindholm@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
As we approach this coming season of giving and acknowledging all that we are thankful for, my hope is that we are inspired to spread love to others out of an abundance of what we feel blessed with in our own lives. It feels so good to give freely to others, whether it is the gift of time, meeting a financial need or the gift of service. When we sacrificially give, it is just as rewarding as it is to the receiver. There are many things I love about working for this magazine, but my favorite thing that I look forward to all year is our annual Giving Campaign. A few years ago, the owners of our company, Steven Schowengerdt and Matthew Perry, wanted to find a way to tangibly help people who may need financial help due to a tragedy, or who have fallen upon unexpected hard times, or who are struggling to make ends meet but who also fall between the cracks of getting help. They decided that the best way to find those hidden needs would be to ask you, our readers, for help in identifying them. Every year, hundreds of nominations flood in from the community and beyond, and the needs are enormous, severe and heartbreaking. It is overwhelming to read through the tragedies and tremendous needs, but it is such a privilege to get to be a part of an opportunity to provide some help in someone’s great time of need. Nominations remain anonymous, and the recipients are simply mailed a Christmas card explaining that someone wanted to bless them this season, and a check is enclosed. The amount given varies based on the need. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 in total to 116 families and individuals, and we need your help with nominations again this year. The recipients do not have to live in our community. Nominations will open up on November 27th and will be open until December 10th. You can visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram and click the Giving Campaign link to nominate someone during those dates, or look for the full article in our December issue with details on how to nominate. The identities of nominators and recipients will remain private. This project is so special to me. It allows all of us to be part of something bigger than ourselves—to be a part of taking care of one another, as we should. And lastly, I would be remiss to not acknowledge Mayor Peggy Dunn for all that she has done for the City of Leawood. We wanted to honor her in this issue, and as you will read about in the coming pages, she is deeply cherished and beloved by all who have had the privilege to work with her. I personally am so grateful for her support of me and of this magazine and for her encouraging emails from time to tine. She is the biggest advocate for her city and for all of you in this community. Her leadership will be greatly missed as she moves on to her next chapter of life. There truly is no one quite like her, and her poise, graciousness, brilliance and thoughtfulness is unmatched. She is such a gem. I hope you all have a Thanksgiving filled with love and blessings. ANGEL A BROOCKERD, EDITOR @LEAWOODCIT YLIFEST YLE

Top 5 Things to Know about Medical Weight Management Tirzepatide Modulates Fat Utilization
Who Can Qualify Anyone who is seeking a more personalized approach to weight management is a good candidate for embarking on a journey towards optimal wellbeing. If a person has that stubborn 10 pounds put on during COVID, is doing everything right with diet and exercise, yet can’t shed those extra pounds, they may well qualify for a weight management program. Those who have higher weight loss goals may also benefit from a personalized solution to assist in their wellness journey.
Semaglutide Regulates Appetite This medication has been used for over 15 years to treat diabetes, but then it had an amazing side effect: weight loss. Semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite. This means that when Semaglutide is taken, it can help reduce feelings of hunger, leading to less food intake and weight loss. It has been shown to be particularly helpful for those who have struggled with losing weight through other methods.
Another innovative medical option is Tirzepatide, which activates 2 receptors through hormone stimulation. This not only offers the benefit of suppressing one’s appetite, it regulates glucose and blood sugar levels. Tirzepatide can also assist with modifying how the body utilizes fat by increasing energy expenditure.
Average Amount of Weight Loss Each person is different and loses weight at varying rates. Clinical trials have shown participants to lose from 5% up to 20% of their baseline body weight.
Benefits of Medical Weight Management When managed right, with an experienced medical team that adjusts dosage specific to you, benefits may include: • Loss of weight • Increased energy • Enhanced sleep • Improved blood pressure • Better self-confidence • Less joint pain

In the vibrant culinary landscape of Prairie Village, one restaurant stands out, offering a delectable fusion of elevated cuisine, exceptional service, and a passion for creating unforgettable dining experiences. Meet Tyler Morrison, the owner and operator of Scratch Gourmet Kitchen, a culinary haven that has been making waves in the Kansas City dining scene. Before the inception of Scratch, both Tyler and his wife, Monica, had carved successful careers within the hospitality and restaurant industry. Monica’s expertise led her to Wingstop Headquarters in Dallas, where she played a pivotal role in over 350 store openings. Meanwhile, Tyler’s journey took him to the headquarters of Topgolf in Dallas, where he dabbled in corporate finance, golf operations, and experiential hospitality. Tyler’s career highlights included overseeing the operations of Topgolf Stadium tours, orchestrating mobile golf activations at PGA tour events, and curating sponsorship activations at prestigious events like the Masters. The couple’s shared passion for food and culinary adventures was evident as they explored the diverse flavors across the country during their years of dating. “My wife and I are foodies and spent our years dating traveling the country for work and eating as adventurously as we could,” says Morrison. “In 2019 we moved to Kansas City to get married and start a family. We started Scratch in May 2020 as a catering company and have transformed it over time into a premium catering business, adding a casual fine dining and wine bar restaurant.” CONTINUED >

For first-time visitors, Scratch promises an exceptional dining experience. Over the past few months, the restaurant has evolved into a casual fine dining destination with a cozy atmosphere that can accommodate 22 guests indoors and an additional 30 on the patio. The focus is on elevated comfort food, carefully curated by Executive Chef and Partner, Grant Ramirez. Morrison and his team take immense pride in crafting dishes that are not only flavor-packed but also a visual delight. Presentation is key, and every plate that leaves the kitchen is a work of art. The restaurant’s extensive wine menu offers over 50 wines by the glass and a cellar list featuring 165 unique selections. Reservations can now be made through the app, Tock. Scratch boasts a range of signature dishes that have captured the hearts and palates of patrons. Among these, the Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass, a specialty of Chef Grant, is a standout. However, it’s the Brownie Sundae that has gained notoriety on social media. Served theatrically under a solid

It’s a showstopper that leaves diners reaching for their phones to capture the moment. “When the dish comes out, the phones turn to video mode!” For wine enthusiasts, the wine flight program offers unique and high-end wines, allowing guests to sample premium selections that they might not otherwise experience due to the cost of a full bottle. The use of a coravin system ensures that each pour is as fresh and delightful as the next. As the seasons change and the culinary calendar evolves, Scratch has exciting events lined up. Starting in September, the restaurant began offering a weekly changing three course chef menu special for $48, exclusively available Monday through Wednesday. It’s a showcase of the creative culinary talents of the restaurant’s chefs, paired with carefully selected wines to elevate the dining experience. “This has been a great way to show off the unique and creative culinary experiences our extremely talented chefs have. We have a ton of fun pairing these menus up and highlighting different wines in our books with them as well.” Scratch’s catering business has seen remarkable growth, nearly tripling in the last year. This underscores the demand for the exceptional culinary offerings that Morrison and his team bring to the table. For more information, visit scratchgourmet.com.

AS MAYOR DUNN PREPARES TO STEP DOWN, THE CITY WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A STANDING OVATION
32
H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE
As the city of Leawood celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn will retire from elected office after 27 years of dedicated and tireless service. After serving as Leawood’s mayor for more than one-third of the city’s overall history—winning reelection to the city’s top post seven times—she will not seek reelection and will pass the baton to a future mayor with unenviably big shoes to fill. Leawood Lifestyle Magazine would like to celebrate the service of Mayor Dunn, an ardent supporter of the city of Leawood and this publication. A lifelong resident of the Greater Kansas City area, Peggy Dunn is from Raytown, Missouri. Her family moved to Prairie Village in 1964 where Peggy attended Bishop Miege High School. She graduated from the University of MissouriKansas City and has served as Mayor of Leawood since 1997. She is also highly involved with a number of civic and nonprofit organizations, including serving on the Governing Boards of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Union Station Kansas City, Hall Family Foundation,
Rockhurst University, and Johnson County Education Research Triangle Authority. She serves as an Advisory Board Member of both the Leawood and the Greater Kansas City Chambers of Commerce. Peggy and her husband, Terry Dunn (of JE Dunn Construction Group), have four grown children and 14 grandchildren. Throughout her time as mayor, Leawood nearly doubled in size, from approximately 19,000 residents to 35,000 residents today. Mayor Dunn oversaw Leawood’s high-quality growth in several sectors, including the retail completion of Town Center Plaza at 119th and Roe and Park Place Shopping Center at 115th and Ash. According to the Chamber of Commerce, Leawood is 15 square miles of a built environment with “sophisticated character, a well-maintained network of streets, parks, and public art...known for being one of the safest suburbs in the metro, and has a nationally ranked public school system.” Mayor Dunn’s leadership played a key role in that distinction to the point that Leawood’s original tagline has officially changed from “Growing with Distinction” to “Living with Distinction.”
HEARTFELT APPRECIATION FROM CITY COLLEAGUES “Mayor Dunn was completely devoted to the City of Leawood,” says City Attorney Patricia A. Bennett, who has worked with Mayor Dunn since 1999. “She has always been involved and supportive of the city’s public art program. She was at the helm for the build-out of important projects such as Town Center, Town Center Crossing, Park Place and Church of the Resurrection. She was on the governing body for the construction of the new City Hall building and in the Mayor’s
seat for the development of Ironwoods Park, I-Lan Park, Gezer Park, the new Fire Station No. 3, Fire Station No. 1, the Public Works and Parks Maintenance facilities and the Justice Center. She is a smart, warm and compassionate woman with an unwavering focus on community, respect for others and customer service. People are drawn to her for her intellect, interest, devotion, sincerity and her huge heart.” Councilmember Gary Bussing, Ward 3, served for 15 years on city council with Mayor Dunn as she led the city through rapid diverse growth. He says that throughout that time, her focus was always on what was best for the city and its citizens. “She is just so darned nice,” Bussing says. “She is that rare individual who raises people, making everyone feel appreciated. She gives you her undivided attention and has an encyclopedic memory for peoples’ names. Growth/ change is challenging to many folks, but Mayor Dunn’s great strength was her ability to find compromise and to truly care for the city and its citizens. She was always prepared, pleasant, open, transparent and encouraging. Her tireless work ethic, intelligence and preparation created a positive and productive city council.” With both vision and attention to detail, Mayor Dunn was a role model to many, including Councilmember Debra Filla, Ward 1 (Old Leawood). “It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve with Mayor Dunn. Her leadership as mayor and her friendship with me has given me a first-hand look at what a leader is and what an inspiring person she truly is.” “Although global in her vision, Mayor Dunn is also all about the details, watching or reading the Planning Commission meetings, participating in community events, ribbon cuttings, Dare Graduations, all faith celebrations, and achievements by our citizens, just to name a few,” Filla states. “Mayor Dunn combines fun and fellowship by celebrating teamwork at the conclusion of work efforts such as the approval of the annual budget. She always made time for everyone to speak and ask questions, even if it meant that the meeting went to midnight, allowing citizens, staff, developers and council to be heard. But perhaps the one thing I admire the most is that Mayor Peggy Dunn, above all else, is the definition of gracious.” Graciousness is a word often used to describe Mayor Dunn. “Some of her greatest and most endearing strengths are her even temperament and grace under pressure,” says Councilmember Mary Larson, Ward 2. “She is also quick to share credit and recognize Leawood community volunteers and Leawood staff for a job well done. Her dedication and professionalism are unparalleled, and the energy and enthusiasm she has displayed for her community and its residents are truly remarkable. Thoughtful planning and attention to detail can be seen everywhere you look in Leawood. That is her legacy.” Councilmember Lisa Harrison, Ward 3, says that Mayor Dunn’s impact on Leawood has been ongoing for decades. “It might be impossible to name another person who has served the city in such an important and impactful role for so many years,” Harrison states. “Mayor Dunn has provided thoughtful and important leadership for Leawood during decades of growth and prosperity. She has
led our city with grace and integrity. She is approachable, fair and empathetic. She has an incredible memory for faces, facts and numbers, and she does the research needed to make the important decisions.” Gregory J. Peppes served on the city council with Mayor Dunn for 12 years, calling her “a leading force” in Leawood’s numerous commercial developments of the past several decades, including initiating the relationship with “like cities abroad” or sister cities that include Elan, Taiwan and the Gezar Region in Israel. Peppes says Mayor Dunn balanced commercial and business developments while expanding and keeping the integrity of a bedroom community together. “It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve with Mayor Dunn. Her leadership as mayor and her friendship with me has given me a first-hand look at what a leader is and what an inspiring person she truly is,” Peppes says. “Mayor Dunn is genuinely a nice person and truly believes that Leawood is a great place to live and do business.” Councilmember James Azeltine, Ward 4, adds that Mayor Dunn’s greatest accomplishment was providing the vision in shepherding the development of Leawood’s limited commercially zoned land, becoming the first city in Johnson County with true mixed-use development like Park Place and Mission Farms, prompting other cities to follow suit. “I have worked with CEOs, senators and governors, and Peggy is one of the best leaders I have ever encountered,” Azeltine states. “She governed with a velvet glove. She also had the ideal temperament for a mayor. Things could get contentious at times, and she always kept her cool and made sure that we were able to put contentious issues behind us and move on to the next one.” CONTINUED >

“She has always handled city business with kindness, passion and grace. With attention to detail and a commitment to providing the Leawood citizens the very best, she has helped make Leawood what it is today—one of the greatest cities in the country.” Mayor Dunn is often credited for growing Leawood from a basic bedroom community to a vibrant retail, commercial and residential city. “Her accomplishments and touches are everywhere,” says Councilman Jim Rawlings, Ward 2, who has served with the mayor for 24 years. “Her utmost dedication to her job as mayor guided the council and staff with her excellent listening and compromising skills to help make Leawood evolve into a first-class city of livability, second to none. It has been an honor working beside her. She is a true ambassador for the city and has helped make our city what it is today.” As an ambassador, Mayor Dunn is often lauded for her professionalism and tact. “She represents Leawood exceptionally well in the greater Kansas City community area and is recognized wherever she goes,” says Councilmember Chuck Sipple, Ward 3. “She manages her relationships with citizens, the staff and fellow elected officials with balance, grace and courtesy. She does not allow partisan politics to come into play with the city council. We remain apolitical and not agenda driven. She will be fondly remembered for 25 years of balanced, professional and outstanding service to the citizens of Leawood.” Councilmember Andrew Osman, Ward 1, credits Mayor Dunn for having the “uncanny ability to be everything to everybody all at once.” “She personally engages with everyone,” Osman states. “She has left a legacy of caring for our community at every level, from public safety, building bonds with international communities, supporting local business, and creating a city that treasures arts and open spaces. She worked with the Park Place Development team and the state of Kansas to
bring in the AMC Theater corporate office and oversaw city projects like the Justice Center, art in public places, and park improvements. Without her, Leawood would not be as enriched as it is today.” In addition to the city council, many key city employees were effusive in their praise of Mayor Dunn’s leadership style. “She is just such a genuinely nice person who seems to truly care about everyone,” says Travis Torrez, M.C.P., director of Building and Code Enforcement. “She has always handled city business with kindness, passion and grace. With attention to detail and a commitment to providing the Leawood citizens the very best, she has helped make Leawood what it is today—one of the greatest cities in the country.” Colin Fitzgerald, Fire Chief of Leawood Fire Department, has worked with Mayor Dunn for more than 12 years, saying “Mayor Dunn has been an integral part of the city of Leawood for so long, marshaling it through growth from a small city on the outskirts of the KC Metro to a vibrant city that sets the standard for excellence in design and amenities. It is now common for the city of Leawood to be named among the best in the nation for quality of life, safety, property value and high standards. City employees are constantly recognized by the mayor for their contributions, and she truly cares about the happiness and well-being of all who work here.” Chief Fitzgerald adds that Mayor Dunn set the standard for a city known for “high value, prosperous and elegant design, and most importantly, safe and happy citizens and employees.” Dale Finger, Chief of Police, Leawood Police Department, says that he has the “utmost respect and gratitude” for Mayor Dunn’s service. “Her unwavering commitment to our community has left an indelible mark,” he states. “Throughout her tenure as mayor, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision and a deep passion for the well-being of our city and its residents. Her tireless efforts to improve our infrastructure, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for all Leawood citizens have been truly remarkable. On behalf of the Leawood Police Department, I want to extend my sincere appreciation for her steadfast support of us and her unrelenting advocacy for the safety of the city of Leawood. Under her leadership, Leawood has prospered and evolved into a vibrant, thriving community. Her service has been a shining example of selflessness, and her leadership has made Leawood a better place to live, work and raise a family.” “We thank my mother for her 26 years as the mayor of Leawood. She has really watched this city grow and flourish.” — Pat Dunn, eldest son “I applaud my mom for always conducting herself in such a dignified and gracious manner. If more politicians and people had her attributes, this world would be a much better place. Her legacy is one of greatness. She wanted Leawood to win more than herself and that’s rare especially in politics anymore.” — Mike Dunn, youngest son “Mayor Dunn holds a special place in our hearts as a true cornerstone in the realization and championing of the Leawood magazine. Her leadership and dedication have been a beacon for the community, impacting countless families and businesses in every aspect of its growth and success. As Mayor Dunn begins a new chapter in her life, we’re filled with both gratitude and sadness. We’ll truly miss her, yet we’re excited for her next journey. Mayor Dunn, your legacy is ensured, and positive change will continue to thrive. With heartfelt appreciation, we thank Mayor Dunn for her efforts and support in making our dream of a community magazine a reality. Your contributions to the community will forever be cherished in the heart of Leawood.” — Steven Schowengerdt, CEO of City Lifestyle and the Leawood Lifestyle Magazine Team

GRATEFUL FOR THE ARTS KANSAS CITY AERIAL ARTS GIVES LOCAL RESIDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A FRESH CHALLENGE

In the heart of Leawood, high-flying acrobatics and intricate performances come to life at Kansas City Aerial Arts, owned by the passionate Daniel Parks. Parks recalls his first introduction to the world of aerial arts, not as a performer but as a theatrical lighting designer. His office sat just a floor above the dynamic circus training, and the allure was simply too much to resist. “I would watch as the circus training took place right beneath my office. And every time, I thought, “I want to do that!” says Parks. His purchase of the studio in 2016 was driven by personal experiences and a desire to share the transformative power of the arts. For anyone new, nerves or hesitations are soon replaced with warmth and assurance—the staff at Kansas City Aerial Arts are committed to ensuring everyone feels welcome, regardless of their skill level.
“We offer a fun means of fitness and an opportunity to learn something new,” Parks explains, emphasizing the importance of community and self-empowerment in what they do. Whether you’re an experienced gymnast seeking a fresh challenge or a newcomer eager to blend athleticism with artistry, Parks assures there’s a place for you. The community-focused environment encourages growth, self-expression, and personal achievement. “Whatever your circumstances, we’ve witnessed countless success stories and ensure every student is given the tools to soar,” he adds. Parks’ commitment to expanding accessibility and outreach is evident, from pilot programs for underserved communities to the establishment of a dedicated non-profit for fundraising and networking. “We are in the process of adding another studio and enhancing our program offerings, especially for neurodiverse individuals,” Parks shares. The studio takes pride in creating riveting entertainment for local events. With a rich repertoire of skills like aerial silks, trapeze and stilt walking, they promise an unforgettable spectacle tailored to your event’s needs. Kansas City Aerial Arts is located at 5001 117th Street in Leawood. For more information or to book an event, visit kansascityaerialarts.com.

With 24 years of history, the Luminary Walk continues to shine brightly, embodying wonder, charm, and the magic of tradition. The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, illuminated with miles of electric lights and holiday spirit, welcomes guests every winter to kick off their holiday season. This festive walk through the gardens serves as a beloved and longstanding tradition for the community. The Luminary Walk is one of seven key fundraising events for Friends of the Arboretum, a division of The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, and they are grateful for the community support.
“The Luminary Walk is the highest attended and biggest impacting fundraiser of the year for FOTA! This year, we are excited to offer three special experiences to choose from: Luminary Walk, two Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll nights and Electric Glow weeknights.,” noted Brit Waye, Community Engagement Manager. The gardens are bright with color while the walkways through quiet woods are lit with candles. Trees, buildings, and bridges are all part of the show, with thousands of lights aglow. Cafe Celeste will be open in LongHouse selling hot beverages and snacks, as well as adult beverages. The Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll is for those looking for a quieter experience that still features the glow of candles through the woods, dazzling light displays, live musical performances and
enchanting gnome houses, all without children. Wine and hot adult beverages will be available for purchase. Interested in a less crowded experience? Electric Glow is a low-key version of the Luminary Walk where only the electric lights are on, and attendance is much more limited, making them ideal for wandering through the lighted gardens and studying the intricate gnome and fairy houses. Tickets can be purchased online at opabg.org for select nights from November 24 - December 20.

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.
