LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor

July 2022 PUBLISHER

Matthew Perry | matthew@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the most enjoyable times spent can be a backyard barbeque with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share the story of how the family behind Farmstrong Flowers took the leap to relocate from Leawood to the outskirts of Johnson County to develop a flower farm. If you are looking for some new, easy recipes to entertain guests this summer, we have you covered this month. Lauren Culinarian shares a few of her go-to summer treats with you and some easy no fuss ways to entertain. The Italian smashed sandwiches are surprisingly divine, so be sure to add those to you musttry recipe list. We also share about the upcoming induction of Buck O’Neil into the Baseball hall of Fame. Buck was an extraordinary ball player and an even better human being who worked tirelessly to bring unity to the world through love and grace. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

HONEY CITRUS MELON SALAD INGREDIENTS • 2 small cantaloupes • 1 small honeydew • 1 tablespoon lime zest • juice of a lime • 3 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon fresh mint INSTRUCTIONS 1. Use a melon baller* to scoop round spheres out of each melon and place them into a large bowl. 2. In a small bowl, combine honey, lime juice and zest. Whisk to combine and pour over the melon. Gently toss together before serving with torn fresh mint leaves. NOTES • Sub watermelon for any or all of the melons. • Sub basil for mint. • If making in advance; chill melon then toss with honey lime syrup and garnish with fresh mint right before serving

MAKE-AHEAD ITALIAN PRESSED SANDWICHES These make-ahead sandwiches combine hearty ciabatta bread and are loaded with delicious Italian deli meats and cheese. This sandwich is impressive, tasty, and perfect for pool parties, picnics, and tailgates. INGREDIENTS • 1 Ciabatta Baguette or loaf, cut in half horizontally • 3 Tbsp butter • 3 medium red peppers • 3 cups arugula, spinach or mixed greens, rinsed and patted dry • 1 ball of mozzarella, sliced thin • 10 oz Assorted Italian deli meats, (I used Soppressata Salami, and Mortadella) • Olive Oil • Italian seasoning • Salt and Pepper, to taste • 1 tablespoon capers (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. To roast the red peppers: Set your pepper on your cooktop flame or grill. Cook until they are mostly black, turning as needed. Place the peppers in a plastic ziploc bag or papper bag and let sit for 15 minutes. Remove peppers from bag and peel off the blackened skin. Discard the skin and slice the peppers in to wide strips. Place in a bowl and drizzle with a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add a tablespoon of capers if using. Set aside. (you can also roast peppers under your broiler) 2. To prepare the sandwiches: Butter each piece of ciabatta and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Butter will help prevent moisture from getting into the bread. 3. Place a generous layer of overlapping cold meats. Top with cooled roasted red pepper strips. 4. Tap dry your mozzarella slices with a paper towel. Top the red peppers with a layer of the mozzarella slices. Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Top with a generous layer of arugula. Top with top slice of ciabatta. 5. Wrap each sandwich tightly with plastic wrap and place on a platter or baking sheet. When all the sandwiches are prepared, place the platter in the refrigerator. Top with a heavy skillet or brick. (alternatively top with another baking sheet and place some large cans on top for the weight). 6. Refrigerate at least 6 hours or ideally, overnight. 7. When ready to serve, remove from plastic wrap. Slice into pieces using a serrated knife holding the sandwich in place while using a sawing motion. NOTES • These sandwiches are endlessly customizable. Just use your imagination. Pesto and olive tapenade are great additions. • See my video on how to make the sandwiches and wrapping tips. Lauren-Lane.com CONTINUED >

SEMI-HOMEMADE ICE-CREAM SANDWICHES Upgrade store-bought cookies by decking them out with delicious ice cream pairings and toppings. INGREDIENTS • 12 store-bought cookies • 1 pint vanilla ice cream or flavor of your choice • Miniature chocolate chips, sprinkles, or chopped nuts INSTRUCTIONS 1. Top cookie with a scoop of ice cream. Top with another cookie; press down with the palm of your hand gently to ensure the cookie doesn’t break. 2. Roll sides of ice cream sandwich in chocolate chips, sprinkles or nuts. 3. Wrap in plastic. Freeze until serving.

NO-BAKE DESSERT BITES INGREDIENTS • 1- Store-bought pound cake cake • 1- Can of store-bought icing (I used buttercream) • Berries • Powered Sugar (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut cake into squares or circles. I used a square cookie cutter. 2. Place icing in a ziplock. (see note) 3. Snip the tip off the corner of he bag to allow the frosting to be piped out. Be careful with how large you create the hole based on how you’d like to pipe out your frosting. Start small, you can always make it bigger. 4. Squeeze dollop of icing onto each cake bite 5. Top with berries 6. Dust with powdered sugar if desired NOTES • If you want to elevate the taste of store-bought icing, mix in a package of softened cream cheese or a stick of butter.

CREATIVE TIPS FOR KEEPING COOL BY LEANNE PARKER • Race to Melt: Freeze small plastic toys inside water balloons or in muffin tins. Make a game of who can free the toy first (or last!). • Water{Sponge} Fight: Fill a large bucket with water and new colorful sponges to throw at

friends or targets (less prep and less mess than water balloons!). • Cooling Herb: Add muddled garden mint to water for a refreshing drink. In addition, rub fresh mint on the neck, forehead and wrists for a cooling effect. • Rose Water Spritz: Use backyard roses to make refreshing rose water. Then, use rose water as Facial Spritz to mist on the face to keep cool (recipe on the blog at www.silvertoothhome.com/celebrating-roses). • Rose Lemonade: Use backyard roses to make refreshing rose water. Then, use rose water to make Rose Lemonade (recipe on the blog at www.silvertoothhome.com/celebrating-roses).

DIY ROSE WATER • 2 cups garden rose petals (chemical free) • 4 cups water & 2 cups of ice cubes Place water and rose petals in a saucepan. Carefully place an empty bowl in the saucepan. Set a lid upsidedown to cover. Place ice cubes on the upside-down lid and simmer on low. Condensation will form on the inside of the lid and drip into the empty bowl creating rose water. Once rose petals have lost their color, turn off the heat and let cool. Place rose water into a glass bottle and keep refrigerated for up to a year. To turn your rose water into a cooling Rosewater Facial Spritz, Rose Lemonade and more by visiting the blog at www.silvertoothhome.com/ celebrating-roses.

A HOME WITH A VIEW ARTICLE BY REBECCA STOLTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

In 2017 when CJ Archer built her home with EvanTalan Homes she had one vision in mind— designing her new home to capture the tranquil view that now lies just outside of her windows. A longtime equestrian herself, CJ found the acres filled with horses beyond her backyard to be as peaceful of a view as any, and her goal was to design a house that drank in that view. She accomplished just that. Stepping into the home, your eye is immediately drawn through the open floor plan and back outside again to the view of horses peacefully grazing just beyond her property. “I had downsized from a very large home and I chose this lot specifically for the view. I have owned horses in the past, and this was a way of still enjoying them without all of the work,” she jokes. The home is open and airy with clean lines and a modern, West Coast feel. CJ shares that part of her inspiration for her design came from her many trips to California to visit her son and daughter-in-law. Along the back of the house the doors to the sunroom roll completely away to reveal an unobstructed scene. “When you walk in the front door I wanted to pull your attention to the calm and peaceful view,” she says. The home features a beautiful, grand kitchen with an impressive 14-foot island. “I decided to push the great room back and extend the island to be larger to accommodate my family and our love of cooking together,” she says. Hidden just off of the kitchen is a well-appointed coffee bar as well as a highly functional walk-in butler’s pantry. Perhaps most interesting about her home is the vast collection of art that is featured within it. “When I purchase furniture or art, I always purchase from local artists and shops. I feel compelled to support local businesses,” she shares. Her home features CONTINUED >

the art of area artists Bill Rose, Carla Craven, Jennfier Rivera, Anthony High, Taf Mattingly, Chris Day, Tim Cherry and Scott Hartley. She takes a moment to admire a particularly personal piece, an abstract done by Mattingly, that features the outline of a horse with words that appear to be random, floating in the background. “The words are actually part of a poem that I wrote, telling the story of my history with horses beginning with my dad and grandpa,” she shares. She points out that some of the names floating in the background were her horses’ names. This beautiful piece clearly evokes wonderful memories and happiness for her. In the master bedroom the eye is once again drawn outside to the serene view that lies beyond, of vibrant, green grass punctuated by the silhouette of horses. The lower level is home to a modern, welcoming recreation room and bar where her love of art has extended, with many original prints displayed. She says, “I tried to create some unusual and unexpected things that make good conversational pieces.” A contemporary Ping Pong table is a feature, along with a luxurious bar highlighting Kansas City sports teams memorabilia and art featuring Monarchs Baseball. “I wanted to design a home for my three sons to come home to,” she shares with a smile.

Martin City Coffee When Penny Romero and her business partner, Rick Ramsey, purchased an empty, overgrown lot in Martin City, they knew it had potential. It was Romero who would decide the lot’s fate; a new local coffee shop. “I went to the library and researched demographics and coffee shops in the area and it pretty much cemented my idea, I was like yep, it’s a good spot for a coffee shop,” Romero said. After about two years getting the building up, Martin City Coffee was born in October 2018. Romero originally only planned on selling coffee beverages but decided to sell food thanks to the building’s layout that worked well for a kitchen. Romero, who grew up in Dominican Republic and Venezuela, was used to eating Latin American food, which would inspire her menu at Martin City Coffee. CONTINUED >

“We kind of have a different type of menu than any other coffee shop, we have Venzuelan arepas, fried green plantains and yuca fries,” Romero said. “We serve breakfast all day and have the classic dishes like salmon bagels and fried eggs, homestyle potatoes, bacon and biscuits and gravy.” Her number one selling food item? Breakfast burritos. Tortillas made from scratch! Romero exclusively serves Intelligentsia Coffee, which she had been drinking and ordering online for years and became her favorite. “The coffee is exceptional,” Romero said. Romero gives much credit to her manager, Phillip Stegner, who was the first person she hired as a barista. She admits she is not a barista and needed someone who knew what they were doing. “He worked at a lot of other coffee shops in the past and he has trained everyone that we’ve hired, and the quality and the passion he has for coffee really shows,” Romero said. Her coffee menu consists of cold brew, lattes, americanos, espresso, frappes, and of course brewed coffee. When asked what her favorite coffee drink is, Romero’s answer can’t be found on the menu. “I call it the cubano latte, I like my latte to be made with a cubano shot, which is sweeter and is just perfect,” Romero said. “I highly recommend it to everyone who asks me.” Her business is packed on weekends with all-day breakfast options. Martin City Coffee also has a drivethru, which Romero said played a huge role in saving the business during the COVID-19 pandemic. When customers walk through the shop and out through the back door, they will find themselves in an enclosed, garden patio surrounded by plants. The patio has windows that are garage doors that can open up. “It is so inviting, I highly recommend it,” Romero said. Romero said one of her favorite parts about owning Martin City Coffee is seeing her amazing customers, many of whom are regulars. She said the hard-working, close-knit group of employees helps make the business special to her and others in the community. “We’re like a family at work, and I have such a great team of employees, and I’ve never seen that anywhere else so it’s been really cool,” Romero said. “I have people that have been with us since we opened on day one and everyone does stuff together outside of work.”

FARMSTRONG FLOWERS

Moving from St. Louis to Leawood, the Payne family purchased 12 acres of land south of Johnson County in 2017 to pursue their dreams of building a custom home and developing their cut flower farm business. That dream is now a reality, and they live on their flower farm growing and selling flowers in Bucyrus, Kansas called FarmStrong Flowers. It all started with building their modern Scandinavian barn home, which was designed by Colleen Payne. “I have a construction background and have been selling real estate in St. Louis for almost 20 years,” says Payne. “I sketched the layout and design and had an architect and engineer draft the drawings. Our home interior has a lot of white oak, high ceilings, some exposed steel beams, black commercial storefront windows and white walls. The exterior is cypress rainscreen siding with a black metal standing seam roof. The Payne family knew they wanted to do something more with their land than just have a large lawn. Originally, growing produce was the plan until they discovered that growing flowers commercially for cut was a real business. Whatever the plan, it needed to emphasize growing with the environment in mind. “Growing flowers for cut became an obsession. I had no idea 80% of the flowers we buy in the U.S. from florists and grocery stores are imported. I wanted to be a part of the “slow flowers” and “grown not flown” movement

to shift that percentage closer to 50% or less imports and joined the Association for Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG). I have evolved into a no-till, regenerative-mindset farmer and focus on soil health first and foremost. Most of the specialty cut flower growers in the U.S. are growing intensively in under two acres, which is what we align with. We have chosen to not get organically certified because the certification allows growers to use way more chemicals than I would ever feel comfortable using. I consider myself beyond organic, or better than organic, since I am not using any harmful chemicals for fertilizer, weed suppression or pest management. I’m looking into pursuing the Certified Naturally Grown route instead. “I focus on using primarily compostable products and avoid single-use plastic as much as possible. I’m very big into recycling everything. We focus on building permanent growing beds that are 3’x100’ with minimal disturbance to the soil. To encourage microbes and beneficials in the soil, we don’t do very much soil disturbance with heavy machinery. We typically tarp a new bed area for a period long enough to kill the grass and weeds underneath and then broadfork manually before laying cardboard and layers of mulched leaves, compost and soil. To avoid having bare soil that can contribute to soil loss from wind and runoff, we use landscape fabric that we reuse year after year. I’m working towards eliminating this step to lessen

our plastic on the farm. The health of our field has changed drastically since we bought it in 2017, which was conventionally farmed and was mostly bare soil. We have been letting it heal naturally and have not used any chemicals since purchasing. Heavy tilling is the death of living soil, so we practice and encourage the no or low till farming.” Formerly Reverie Flower Farm, they changed their name to stand out and symbolize resilience. “As cut flower farming in the U.S., Canada and worldwide has become a new booming trend, there were too many Reverie named floral businesses popping up. FarmStrong was something my husband always referred to me as even well before we moved to the area and were farming. I have always been physically strong, so that is where it stemmed from. It speaks to being resilient, which is so necessary in life and in farming right now. “Last year I supplemented my flowers with flowers from other local growers in my informal co-op. I drove to each of the farms on Thursdays and Fridays and brought our blooms to the Park Place Farmers Market on Saturday. It was a great way to market local flower farmers and educate the public about the benefits of local blooms.” FarmStrong Flowers will be at the Park Place Farmers Market in Leawood from May through October. When you enter the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, pay for your ticket and pass through the turnstile, a docent is standing by to answer questions. He or she will tell you to start your tour on the second floor, then third and work your way down to the first floor to the actual Hall of Fame gallery. Don’t do that just yet. Tell the person you’re from Kansas City and you came to see Buck. Then turn immediately to your right and there in a brightly lit corner is the larger-than-life bronze Buck O’Neil. This is the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2008, to honor an individual whose extraordinary efforts enhanced baseball’s positive impact on society, among other qualities. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Kansas Citians in 2006 when Buck, then 94, was not inducted into the Hall of Fame. He died in October that year. Despite an exceptional career as a player in the Negro Leagues and a championship career as a manager, Buck did not meet the HOF criteria in place in 2006. So, the Baseball Writers Association of America reviewed its criteria. Buck was such an exceptional human being, dedicating nearly eight decades to the game, that such a review and re-write was necessary. Buck O’Neil is in the class of 2022 to be inducted July 24. It’s probably too late to get tickets for the event. Maybe it’s too late to get a hotel room. But that shouldn’t stop you from planning a trip to Cooperstown soon to see Buck, George Brett and this charming community. Why Cooperstown? Cooperstown, New York is a village of fewer than 2,000 people on the shores of beautiful Lake Otsego. To be quite honest, it’s out in the middle of nowhere. From Kansas City, I flew to Baltimore, then to Albany, then rented a car. The first 45 minutes was on I-88, then I turned onto a state road, then a county road and wiggled around past farms and cows. I was determined that Siri was lost, but suddenly, there was Cooperstown. Named for the family of author James Fenimore Cooper, the entire village is on the National Register and is as perfect Americana as any Norman Rockwell painting. An impressive folk art museum bears the Fenimore name. Susan B. Anthony spoke at the Presbyterian Church. There’s an opera festival each summer. So why the Baseball Hall of Fame way out here? It’s a largely debunked myth that baseball was invented in Cooperstown. The story goes that in 1839, Abner Doubleday gathered some kids in a horse pasture and made up the game of baseball.

The fact is humans have been hitting balls with sticks since the beginning of time. But a visit to Doubleday Field is a joyous experience. Jeff Katz, president of Friends of Doubleday Field, leads the morning tours and remembers Buck O’Neil. “He would sit right there with a smile on his face and talk with everyone who came by,” Jeff says, pointing to a spot near the dugouts. “He was a warm, humble human being and a gift to this game.” They remember Buck at the Otsego Inn as well. That’s the historic property that sits right on the lake where all Hall of Famers, their guests and other VIPs stay during induction week. “Oh, I remember his storytelling,” says my waiter at the Hawkeye Bar & Grill at the Otsego. “He always had a crowd around him. Everyone loved Buck’s stories.” Main Street Cooperstown is part small-town shopping and part touristy souvenir shops. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth

and Carl Yastrzemski have shops. If you buy a Cooperstown bat, remember to place it in your checked luggage. TSA will confiscate it otherwise. The Hall of Fame and Museum sits on the west end of Main Street, slightly back from the street so that some people miss it when they first drive by. But it’s like candyland for baseball fans, with history, facts and trivia galore. Before you reach Buck O’Neil’s statue, you’ll first encounter the trio of Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente called “Character & Courage,” reminding us that becoming a Hall of Famer is about more than skill on the field. And that’s why Buck O’Neil is in the Hall of Fame, because he brought more to the game (and Kansas City) than any statistic could ever measure. When you call Made in the Shade, the sky is the limit for all your window coverings. From the moment Jeremy Nienhuser or one of his crew pulls into your driveway, the adventure begins. Basically, if you need patio shades, awnings, shades, blinds or curtains, they have you covered. “Patio shades are a great product to make your porch cooler in the hot summer with a push of a button. In addition to sun protection, patio shades can also be bug proof and hold heat in during cold fall days,” Jeremy says. “‘Alexa, lower the patio shades,’ works as well. We can integrate with just about any home automation program. I also really enjoy installing them!” Besides patio shades they sell about anything you can imagine putting in your window that’s functional, stylish and fits the budget. To discover that perfect product for you, Jeremy asks a series of questions and listens to what you need and want. “I’ve got a plethora of samples in the van so you can see the colors and textures in your home amongst your style,” he notes. “That way we know it works for you! I could list all the products that we carry, but just know we carry everything!” Prior to owning this company, Jeremy served Kansas City in sales and home remodeling, then began doing installs for

the previous owner who moved to Denver for his daughter’s health. He and his wife, Aubri, purchased the area when he left. Aubri was a teacher for 11 years before they jumped into this new dream job together. He admits it has been a wild ride going from installs to business ownership, but he wouldn’t change it for anything. Aubri used to handle customer service and scheduling, but now she has her hands full with their baby girl, Lydia Jane, who is 2 years old and loves playing with her new cat, Mochi. “We are so glad Natalie Steed came on board to handle the off ice. She’s got big shoes to f ill and is doing a great job!” he relates. Throughout the month of July, he is running a 5%, 10% and 15% discount for five, 10 and 15 products purchased. When you are ready to change the face of your home with new, refreshing window treatments, give them a call and take advantage of their in-home, free consultation. Whether you want a small change or a complete makeover, the way you view your outdoors is a great place to start. Visit mitskc.com to see all the exciting ways Made in the Shade can dress up your window spaces. Call them at 913-210-5150.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
