LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter From The Editor

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Matthew Perry | matthew@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Spring is here! There is nothing better than opening up a window and letting the fresh spring air and sunshine in after a long, gray winter. I love what our city has to offer as the weather warms up, and we all start to gravitate outdoors. I am ready to fully embrace the busy schedule that spring brings of shuffling kids to activities and trying to get a little weekend outdoor fun in when we can. Among my favorite things that spring brings is the farmers market, outdoor patios, bike trails, taking our dogs out to explore and watching baseball. My second son is a junior this year. His high school baseball season is starting, and I am savoring every single game he plays, as I know how fast time goes, and before I know it a time will come when I will be watching him play his last game. I didn’t expect to love watching this game quite like I do, but it has become a weekly ritual that I look forward to enjoying all spring and summer long. Watching him play is inspirational to me because he has worked so incredibly hard to be the player he is today. It didn’t come easy when he was really young, and it took true grit, love of the game, daily consistency and determination on his part. Worn out bare patches of dirt where grass once was used to adorn our yard from the endless hours of time he spent outside playing ball. As much as those patches in the yard drove me crazy, I sure miss those days. For our April issue, we wanted to share some of our favorite things about the changing season: great food, entertainment, travel and getting outdoors. . We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and sunshine.

Worth the Drive TAILLEUR on Main aims to provide Kansas Citians with a unique atmosphere to enjoy European comfort food. ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON PHELPS PHOTOGRAPHY

The business, located in the heart of Midtown, is owned by Heather White and Amante Domingo. The pair are also the creators and owners of The Russell Restaurant. Heather says her goal with TAILLEUR is to hit all of the customers’ senses, starting with the business’s look. While the outside is under construction, the business’s unique interior is something Heather takes pride in. “When people walk in, they are like ‘oh wow, what was this before?’” Heather says. Heather and Amante spent 18 months transforming the building at 3933 Main Street into their vision for TAILLEUR, which has an equestrian theme.

16

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

The inspiration for TAILLEUR came during the COVID-19 pandemic when The Russell became curbside pickup-only, and Heather noticed a large demand for dinner. The pair had also been wanting to expand on The Russell’s bakery. “We wanted to create another spot that was bakery-centric and had a lot of different items that we had at The Russell,” Heather says. The business originally opened in early mornings and offered pastry items such as muffins and scones. However, Heather noticed more customers came in around lunch time and there was an even larger demand for dinner.

“We have a simple menu, but it really covers a lot of areas like seafood, share plates, and it started to feel more like a date spot than a bakery-centric style restaurant,” Heather says. Heather says TAILLEUR offers a menu of European comfort food. One of the most popular items is the mussels. “The dish is done in a really beautiful, aromatic, white wine, garlic herb sauce that tastes so good, and we also make all of our own bread in house, so we do a French baguette with beautiful French sea salt that you then dip in the remaining mussel juice and it’s the most popular thing,” Heather says. Heather says her team works hard to make sure every dish is perfectly executed before being served. Chefs make everything in house, such as dressings, bread crumbs and other ingredients. “It’s one of those boutique-style, small, locally owned restaurants that you can feel, and I love when we get people’s reactions when they come in and dine here,” Heather says. After opening, Heather says the response from the community was overwhelming. “It went from 0 to 1,000 in a day,” Heather says. “It was just crazy.” The business has since had to develop an online reservation system due to getting so many phone calls. Inside, customers will also notice an equestrian theme throughout the restaurant, which comes from Heather’s love for show jumping horses throughout her life. “We had our painter do everything in a really dark, navy blue, and we pop it with a bit of brass in the chandeliers and then of course complement that with a hunter green and dark woods so that made it feel very equestrian-esque, and I just naturally started to do the decor that way,” Heather says.

Heather says all the detail and hard work on the interior pays off when guests step inside. “I was so excited to do it because of all the rich, dark woods and mixing the old with the new and just getting that feeling that when people walked in they knew it was something special.”

THE SEND

Andy Byrd

M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE

A HOPE MOVEMENT: FAITH AMID THE IMPOSSIBLE

During a time when negativity, darkness and divisiveness have plagued modern society, never has the hope of spiritual awakening resonated so clearly. Now, imagine the daunting task of activating a massive missional emergence that expands across ages, denominations, people and nations, and it becomes abundantly clear that this faith journey can only be ordered by God. It is within this overwhelming reality that real hope can be found—A hope that touches the soul during this most urgent of hours.

And it is The Send that is merging these immense societal needs of the people of the world with the purpose of finding their place in the great commission. “There is a generation that is hungry, hungry for something more to live for, hungry to make a real difference, hungry to re-present Jesus to the nations as He is portrayed through scriptures and how He lived out his life. This is about the least, the last and the lost.” - Andy Byrd, Youth with a Mission (YWAM) This urgency now has a response. When missionaries Andy Byrd and Francis Chan reflect on the history and vision of The Send, a poetic passion illuminates the room. It is a passion so driven by divine enthusiasm, and a belief that the kind actions of people would reflect what Jesus has called the world to do, that it is impossible to dismiss. The history of this calling was birthed in 2000 with the guidance of Lou Engel Ministries. This vision, The Call, has packed stadiums worldwide for 18 years with a message of prayer and fasting along with a mission of encouraging America to turn to Jesus. It was in 2018 that a team of distinct ministries began to question what could be done for the Kingdom if they really worked together in a spirit of unity and collaboration. The Call had become the catalyst in creating The Send, a movement of massive missional activation that had hopes of impacting the 3.2 billion unreached peoples of the world through the promise of the gospel. The trajectory was paved, and the response was immense. In 2019 The Send filled an Orlando stadium, resulting in a mind-blowing 58,000 people answering the call to mission fields and thousands making commitments, willing to joyfully live for something bigger than themselves. They were just getting started. By virtue of the Orlando event and the thousands in attendance from Brazil, The Send rented a stadium in the South American country, further building the momentum of spiritual promise. Within six hours the stadium was sold out to its capacity of 70,000 people. Due to the demand, two additional stadiums were secured. The result of the February 2020 event was 140,000 Brazilian participants, 3 million viewers worldwide and 100,000 missional commitments within the mission fields of high schools, universities, communities, Bible and engagement, prayer and fasting, vulnerable children, and missionary service to the nations. The average age of these responders was 24. A generation had found its answer.

What came next was further proof that God was in all the details. The Send received an invitation from Kansas City’s Arrowhead stadium. It was an opportunity to extend the gospel in the loudest stadium in the world. Byrd believes that Arrowhead could become a megaphone to the nations: “How powerful that we could make a sound in that stadium: The sound of hope, the sound of the love of Jesus, the sound of hope for a generation, the sound of activation and the sound of love running across the streets of our cities and hope running to the hardest and most difficult places,” says Byrd. It would be unrealistic to think that organizing an event of this magnitude would come without challenges. Planning began in 2020 but was halted by Covid. This pause extended into 2021 and now, finally, in May 2022 their efforts are coming to fruition. With trials this immense it would have been easy to relinquish their energies, and the team did experience weariness. Endless Zoom calls, scheduling disappointments, the uncertainty of large gatherings, and inability to secure funding all served to fuel the temptation to purge the idea altogether. Add to this the enormous confusion permeating the nation, and it is only through faith that this undertaking could see the light of day. “We became further fueled as the urgency in the nation seemed to increase. Experiencing the division in the last two years as if everything served to divide our nation whether it was politics, Covid or racial lines, it was just so painful. Three major traumatic divisions were being pushed in the nation where normally we would get one of those a decade. At a cultural level the division was off the charts. If the church cannot be unified, how can we unite the nation? We needed something so risky that thousands would be able to say that they are not alone,” explains Byrd. This urgency energized an army of people, missionaries and volunteers. They toured across the U.S. hosting over 45 events, calling the nation to Kansas City. In addition The Send partnered with a 350-campus tour to spread the dream of making a difference.. The church of America needs to be able to see itself as part of the solution to the crisis of the hour. The greatest mobilization across the nation is to culminate at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, May 14, 2022. The ultimate goal of The Send is to encourage simple acts of the love of Jesus multiplied by ten thousand—serving our marginalized communities in addition to helping children in foster care. Byrd believes people want to get on the field but that many need permission to take a step. The Send KC is a call to action. It is 12 hours of Great Commission

Francis Chan

messaging intended to stir an awakening. It is as simple as: come, bring friends, pray, love your neighbor and serve marginalized people. The Send hopes to represent the beauty and diversity of the nation and to continue to spread a message of hope as we all do our part to see a spiritual awakening and a broad scale activation of believers from every walk of life. “We need courage. We need courage to face the difficulty. We need courage to face daily challenges. We need courage to not become cynical, to not lose hope. We need courage to not just blame other people and fuel the division. For people who are on the edge of their own faith and their own hope, there are few things that bring greater courage than to stand together with thousands of others who are also willing to take a stand and live with hope. We need to gather together. We are not alone.” -Andy Byrd For more information and to get involved visit: thesend.org

The Goldstein Team

Suzy Goldstein, her son Erich, and their team have been consistently recognized as one of the top luxury home marketing teams in the Kansas City Metro area, selling such iconic neighborhoods as Hallbrook Farms since opening day in 1987. In today’s real estate market, it is important to have a team with experience on your side. Suzy Goldstein, her son Erich, and their entire group go by the rules to work hard, be honest, be fair, earn commissions commensurate with the value you bring to others and love what you do! From the first home she sold in 1983, her career path was clear. “I was determined to always do my best, care for my community, deliver raving fan service, provide the highest level of marketing and surround myself with smart, curious, exceptional people,” she says. “My son Erich grew up in a whirl of real-estate activity and became my partner in 2000. My husband, Myron, is a retired architect and remains my loving sounding board.” She stressed that Covid 19 has affected her deeply. “Having sold the most exciting and beautiful homes in my city for over 38 years, I thought I had seen everything…boy, was I mistaken,” she says. “However, the market boomed, and we became used to multiple contracts, bidding wars and low home inventory. For the first time in my career,

I sold homes to relocating clients sight-unseen…FaceTime is an amazing tool!” As one of the original four members of the Hallbrook Team, Suzy was able to be there when it was just a bean field. She feels privileged to have been chosen by the Hall family to be a part of this landmark community. The high-energy team consists of Erich, who is the community sales manager for GlenEagles by Matt Adam; Buyer’s Agent Margaret Steward; Leasing and Management Agent Leslie Courtney; and Transaction Manager Amy Hayes. “We have a 20/22 luxury-home vision, and understand that in this market, every day is an adventure, and the Realtor you choose truly will make all the difference. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive, insider marketing plan, a confidential price analysis, a formula to win the bidding war and the beauty contest,” she says. “To see the most beautiful homes in Leawood and surrounding areas, contact us.” She looks forward to spring, and the day you can “hug your Realtor!” she says and smiles. “Remember, we are better together.” The Better Homes & Gardens Leawood office is located at 3740 West 106th St., Leawood, Kansas 66206. HUMBOLDT, KANSAS

Basecamp Humboldt

Basecamp Humboldt

(1 HOUR & 45 MIN. AWAY) Basecamp Humboldt is a place for a retreat for you and your friends or a private self retreat. Named in The New York Times as one of the “ ‘52 Places’ for a Changed world in 2022.” With its Scandinavian design-inspired cabins, quaint quarters that include a queen bed, running water, and a small fridge, you are set for the weekend. You can book them on Airbnb and with this location, it is the perfect 1.5 half getaway from Kansas City. With each cabin rental comes the use of canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes, and with the cabins rental sitting at right about $100 (date and time of year contingent) it is a wonderful place for those “people who want to get away from the city.” If you are not a super outdoorsy person, don’t worry, while your friends are off on the lake and biking somewhere along the 60-mile trail, you can be shopping in downtown Humboldt where you will find boutique shops, locally owned and the best candy shop according to locals. Be sure to stop into Bijou Confectionary to select your own candies or sweets between Tuesday and Saturday. Come back to Basecamp and whether you are there with a loved one or rent out all three cabins for a girl's weekend, you will reconnect with the slower pace you have been craving, taking a break from the city life.

HAMILTON, MISSOURI

Hawley Farms

(1.5 HOURS AWAY) Hawley Farms was a dream born out of Donna Vaughn’s heart and love for those who need respite, as she was one herself. After working in the restaurant industry for over a decade, she went to their land and took time to rest, think and consider the future. As she sat there, she realized that many people needed that space, both mentally and literally, and a dream was planted for her to start Hawley Farm Glamping Site. With three glamping sites nestled on 210 acres of land, you are secluded and can enjoy upscale excellence within the great outdoors. Each site is five acres from the other, so you have privacy for other guests but are within walking distance, if you go as a group. Each site includes a bed, heater for the colder months, and air conditioning for the warmer ones, so there is no reason to not get a great night's sleep after taking a shower from the solar-powered shower. With easy access to each site, you can drive right up to your own getaway and enjoy the respite and quietness of nature all the while enjoying the luxury of glamping. With a two-night minimum, this is the perfect place to come, rest, rejuvenate and be restored over 48 hours. With the beauty and restoration that happens at Hawley Farms, so does a heart to serve. Set up on their website is the option to “sponsor a nurse.” Donna has a heart for nurses and the struggle they are going through right now, so you can sponsor a nurse (which is a tax-deductible donation), so they can receive the wonderful experience of staying at Hawley Farms Glamping Site without finances hindering them from coming. CLINTON LAKE (45 MIN. AWAY) Nestled in the heart of the Midwest, right outside of Lawrence proper, you will find the beauty and call of the water. Clinton Marina has recently been taken over by a young couple Peter Meiusi and Erin Carbrey. They have had a love for the water and have used that to create a community on Clinton Lake. With summer just around the corner, they wanted to create even more of a community with the beginning of their summer events: First Fridays, where there will be live music, food trucks, and local brews. You will definitely want to save the date for July 16-17 because you will be able to view Jetski Races. While you can rent a boat for the day, they also know about people’s love for the water and are starting a boat membership service at the marina, nocoastboatclub. com. Pay a monthly membership fee to reserve a beautifully maintained boat, ask to have food delivered by their on-site deli, and you get to enjoy the water, boats and all the sports that go along with it without having to do any of the work and maintenance. The campgrounds are pristine, and the sand beach is perfect for a day of swimming. Basically, it’s a no-lose situation to visit Clinton Lake, so you better have it on your to-visit list this upcoming warm season!

Old World Balloonery ADVENTURING TO NEW HEIGHTS

ARTICLE BY REBECCA STOLTMAN

In 1975, when Jason Jones’s parents began Old World Balloonery, their primary source of revenue was from area businesses looking to advertise their company names and logos upon the brightly colored hard to miss hot air balloons. Today, Old World Balloonery has now become a second generation family business led by Jason and his wife, Kim. They are catering to a different kind of client these days— those who are looking for an adventure, a bucket list experience, or a way of capturing a memory and preserving it for a lifetime to come. Jason first flew in a hot air balloon when he was just 7 years old, and he went on to get his FAA pilot's license in 1992. After working for other companies he eventually found himself gravitating toward the family business when his parents decided to begin phasing out of it, “I was always passionate about flying,” he shares. As if a second generation family business isn’t remarkable enough—his three children Maddie, Sam and Josie seem to have taken an interest in the business as well. In fact, his oldest daughter, a college freshman, has also just earned her pilot's license. Is Old World Balloonery set to become a third generation family business? Jason laughs and replies “Well, I will never push the kids into it, but if they like it and it continues to interest them, well then that’s pretty great.”

The balloon rides are set for sunrise and sunset each day, when the winds are at their calmest. Peak balloon season tends to line up with daylight savings time from March to November. They typically fly between 1,000 to 3,000 feet above southern Johnson County, Miami County or Cass County showcasing the beautiful views of places like Hillsdale Lake or Longview Lake. When asked about riders who might fear heights, Jason says, “a ride in a balloon is a smooth, peaceful, enjoyable experience.” In all the years he’s been flying, he says he has never really found the fear of heights to be an issue, people are usually surprised at what an easy ride it is. “Safety is our number one priority. We make sure to keep all equipment functioning safely, having quality people on staff working for us, and most importantly, only flying on safe days.” Each flight concludes with an alfresco champagne toast and a continental breakfast for sunrise flyers and a sunset snack for evening flyers. Clearly, Jason has a passion for his business and his enjoyment is contagious. With a third generation family business in the making, it’s clear to see that the Jones Family is taking Old World Balloonery to new heights! Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Georges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville.

When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated draws—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chef-driven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge? “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” - Visit Music City

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”
