Home. It is where we should feel the most comfortable and a place of reprieve and acceptance. Every home tells a story—from the scratches on the countertop to the squeaks in the floorboards. But more than anything, the memories that we make within those walls are what speak the loudest. Traditions are often passed down from one generation to the next, and new traditions are made with the ones we cherish the most—our family. I love to move. My husband and I used to flip houses the first several years we were married, but once having children we settled into a neighborhood that we wanted the kids to attend school at, and since we have four kids, we have stayed put for quite a while. I still get the itch to move and dream about redoing a new space or living in a lake community, however part of me used to hesitate. I know our home holds many memories for our children. Just as I cherish my childhood home, I know they feel the same way. My parents still live in the house I was raised in my entire life, and the nostalgia of their home sends me right back to living there all those years ago even though it looks nothing like it used to. It feels so good to be back at their house every time I walk through the door. I want that for my kids, too. However, I came to a realization recently. My sister’s house burned down to the ground in the Boulder fires over the holidays, and every single thing they owned, including all the special keepsakes, was gone in an instant. Their entire neighborhood was completely destroyed with a moments notice to evacuate immediately. My sister and her husband and four young children got out with their lives. They feel blessed. They will rebuild. And even though the house won’t be the same, and every single item they owned is gone forever, their memories, traditions, and love for one another remains. It isn’t the location that matters but rather the traditions big and small—the familiar smells coming from the kitchen, the family customs carried on and the people who make it feel like home. And new memories are made. March is our Home and Design issue. We are sharing design inspiration from neighbors in our community and not only showcasing gorgeous interiors but ways to elevate our outdoor living spaces as well. From my home to yours, I wish you love and peace in your homes.

Becky Hillyard never imagined she’d be able to build and design her dream home from the ground up. The process is a long and tedious one and requires much attention to detail. However, with the help of Starr Homes and McCroskey Interiors, she was able to bring her vision to life. “I still can’t believe that we are living in it,” Becky says. “I remember the months leading up to moving in, and it just didn’t seem real.” Her expansive Leawood home has a wide variety of unique and beautiful features. Becky says that working with Laura McCroskey of McCroskey Interiors was ultimately one of her best decisions when it came to selecting the home’s design. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I will probably just pick out everything on my own,’” Becky says. “In hindsight, I don’t think I could have ever done the build without Laura.” The two have a similar French modern taste, and Becky says all of her ideas were only further enhanced by McCroskey’s help, who suggested small details such as grill on kitchen cabinets, sliding spice cabinets and the kitchen’s marble hood. Becky says the home’s focal point is her kitchen, which includes marble counters and a matching island. The design took a bit of convincing on Laura’s part. Becky has always loved marble, but admits she had concerns about it staining, especially with three little ones. However, Laura explained staining wouldn’t be much of a concern. The marble would likely get some etch marks, which she said only helps give it character.

“I’m so happy that I did it, it just kind of sets the tone of our home,” Becky says. Laura’s ideas and expertise also allowed Becky to go outside of her comfort zone when it came to her kitchen’s butler pantry. The giant space acts as a second kitchen behind her kitchen with immense amounts of hidden storage. “It’s not just pretty, it is functional, and it’s something that she pushed me on, and I’m so glad I ended up doing it,” Becky says. The pantry hides the home’s oven, microwave and dishwasher. It has a space where Becky can easily make her morning coffee and smoothie and then hide the appliances. It has freezer and refrigerator drawers, so many things Becky uses on a daily basis are easily accessible. While the space provides multiple hidden storage areas, it also has open shelving that Becky is able to style how she likes using beautiful containers to house ingredients such as olive oil, nuts, spices and pastas. “It really kind of is a store,” Becky says “If I run out of olive oil I have a ton to grab from, and those are things that have a long shelf life and can be beautifully styled.” The pantry has a door that exits to the home’s outdoor lanai, which makes it easy for guests to come in to grab a snack or drink during summer parties by the pool. The home’s basement has several features that are great for entertainment. There is a basketball court for kids to play as well as a media room with a giant comfortable couch for watching movies.
Becky also has a bar area with open shelving units from the counter top to the ceiling. “They are beautiful gold ones with glass and they are just such a pretty touch that you can style however you want, and it really makes this fun element in the basement for entertaining,” Becky says. The basement also has an exercise room and a dry sauna for after workouts or getting out from the pool. The home’s primary bedroom is on the main floor and has a closet for both Becky and her husband. The room walks into the laundry area. For others hoping to build and design their dream home from the ground up, she advises investing in a designer, especially in the initial design of the home. She also wants to encourage homeowners to take their time when it comes to making selections and not to be afraid to speak up when they don’t like something. After several years of envisioning her dream home, she still pinches herself every morning that she and her family get to live in it every day. She said the wait was well worth it. “It felt so good to know that all the time we took and all the tears and all the stress it caused was totally worth it,” Becky says. “It’s perfect and is exactly how I wanted it.” To see more of this home, and inspiration from Becky for all things home decor, fashion, motherhood and more, visit @cellajaneblog.

Paros Estiatorio
Leawood’s Greek cuisine that prides itself on fresh, Mediterranean ingredients from the land or sea ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE
“We wanted to be very elegant with a minimalist, Mediterranean style.” Klajdi says.
One family-owned restaurant in the Mission Farms neighborhood in Leawood is hoping to be Kansas City's favorite spot for Greek food. Paros Estiatorio gets its name from the Greek island Paros, which is part of the Cyclades Islands. Klajdi Kreka owns the business, along with his mother, Kozeta Kreka, who is the restaurant’s head chef. The pair say they are big on authenticity and want their customers to get the same dining experience they would in Greece. They pride themselves on their business’s hospitality and want every customer to feel welcome. “We want them to feel just like a part of our family, as if they are coming into our house when they come into our restaurant,” Klajdi says. The cuisine is based heavily on fresh, Mediterranean ingredients from the land or sea.Kozeta has had a passion for cooking for more than 20 years. She loves that her career allows her to do what she loves while introducing customers to authentic Greek food. “I want to represent the Greek cuisine, which is the freshness, the richness in vitamins, the simplicity, the variety of the food,” Kozeta says.

The business imports most of its ingredients from Greece, such as olive oil, cheeses and honey. It also works with small and local farmers around the region. Kozeta works to incorporate family recipes that she’s kept with her over the years while also using modern techniques. Many of her dishes include fresh Mediterranean fish such as sea bass and white snapper. One of her favorites is the Moussakas, which comes from a traditional family recipe with her own spin on it. “My mom is cooking from her heart and cooking the way she’s done her whole life and then training our sous chef and our kitchen staff to do it the same way, the authentic way,” Klajdi says. He adds that the business works to set itself apart from others when it comes to the food but also the atmosphere. Klajdi says the restaurant is driven by philoxenia. The Greek word translated means making a stranger a friend. His hope is that the aroma of the hot olive oil, the Greek music and the authentic food will make customers feel as if they are in Greece from the moment they walk in. The restaurant also has a full scale bar with many wines imported from Greece and a menu of Greekinspired cocktails, such as the Santorini with Ketel One vodka, orangecello, sparkling rose and lemon. Both Kozeta and Klajdi say they are excited to have their restaurant in the Midwest where Greek cuisine may not be as popular as other parts of the country. Their biggest reward comes when a customer enjoys their meal. “That is really exciting, having first-time diners come in and be really satisfied and leave with a happy experience,” Klajdi says. While the last few years have been difficult as a new restaurant, the business has its community to thank for the constant support. “We feel very thankful and blessed to be in this position that we are in because it shows that our customers have received us well and have supported us through our opening and through the pandemic,” Klajdi says.

Daniel Lee, owner and general manager of Windura, and his team see every customer as a different individual they can get to know and work with. They have fine-tuned this approach to making a successful connection. “When we have our initial conversation with a customer pondering over their door, we guide them through three steps,” he says. “The first step is we ask them to think about what problem they are trying to solve with new windows or doors. Do they want to widen, change the design, make the door taller? Or are they uncomfortable because of an old drafty door? Then, there are security options. “Second, we discuss color. Finish color choices can vary by person. The door color says a lot about who owns the home, and what visitors will see when they open the front door and walk in. Some people want a color that matches their home, a more classic design. Some want bold robin egg blue, big red or burgundy. Then, there are those who prefer warm wood doors. There are pros and cons to each. “The third thing to consider is light. We can help people with too much light coming into their home which allows somebody to see in. We can add custom-designed decorative glass or maybe a set of double doors with glass in the middle that allows light to come in. Discussing these three things allows us to help the customer come to his or own conclusion.” Windura often works with designers, such as Jami Meek, with Jami Meek Designs, who notes, “Color starts with what is already on your exterior. For example, with brick or stone I usually recommend a solid color. Sherwin-Williams Tricorn black is my go-to. The solid black just pops against everything on the exterior. Many people are going with the farmhouse design, and I recommend a gel stain that can make the door look like wood and matches well with the farmhouse design. I love black or dark bronze windows. They really stand out and have a nice clean look. Another trend is to choose larger scale grids which also provides an updated look. A modern twist on traditional style.” Daniel purchased Windura in late 2020, which has been in business for 20 years, with the goal of growing the business. He has already implemented a new technology platform that helps track orders, keep customers informed and allows for customer self-service. out that they are not a manufacturer of windows and doors but rather an independent dealer offering a variety of premium options. As mentioned, updating your front door and windows can definitely add value and appeal, as Cathy Maxwell, senior sales executive, Reece & Nichols, points out, “The updated front door improves curb appeal and shows the home is well maintained by the owners. New windows are an important feature due to our inspection process. If windows are faulty, as is so often the case, the buyer may ask for compensation for new windows or cancel the contract. Maintaining the home properly includes doors and windows, not always interior decor. Eventually if you sell your home, proper maintenance of these items will make the transaction much smoother. Plus, the owners will probably make more money due to past attention to maintenance of the home.” When you are ready to take the step through your own new front door, or peek out your new windows, give Windura a call. Windura is located at 11860 W. 91st Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66214. Call them at 913.362.3872 and visit windura.com for more information.

MEET THE ARTIST STEVEN DRAGAN Steven Dragan is a local architectural painter who uses watercolor to create masterpieces of famous landmarks around Kansas City and beyond. His journey to becoming an artist started at the University of Kansas. “My background is actually in architecture—it was there at KU that I started a sketch journal,” Steven says. “At first it was about buildings we studied, but soon it turned into documenting the places I was, or the places I wanted to be. Over time, my sketches turned into paintings, and paintings grew in size and complexity. Still rooted in architecture, my art is about our connection to places. Each place has its own meaning and story. I try to let the place speak for itself and focus on capturing the life in the perspective lines, the mood of atmospheric depth, the rhythm of shadows and the somewhat abstract shapes of people who inhabit the scene. In each piece I aim to capture something true and memorable.” Steven describes his artistic style through the lens of an architect. “My style of art starts with choosing what to see, what to capture, what to highlight and what to leave out. As an architect, I’m drawn to perspective, scale, light and shadow. Learning to see those through the loose lens of watercolor is what unites the paintings in a cohesive style. Watercolor is my primary medium. The tendency of the water to run, to be unpredictable—even sometimes

frustrating—is also the thing that allows it to work in creating complex and interesting mixes of color and connecting shapes in the scenes that were previously unrelated.” The time it takes to create one of his pieces varies, but the process is the same—layer by layer using watercolor. “Sometimes it’s a five-minute capture, sometimes it’s 100 hours in many sessions throughout a year, but most of the time I paint in three two-hour sessions. The first layer is nearly abstract, a heavily saturated paper receiving wet colors that mix and blend into one another to form the atmosphere of the scene. “The next layer is all about seeing the key shapes in a scene—I look for ways to connect objects and shapes which have no real life connection, but have similar values. Moving color around within those shapes adds a hazy type of detail. After painting these shapes, the perspective and lighting start to take form. “The final layer, the detail layer, brings sharpness to the areas I want to emphasize. I use this sparingly, a few thoughtful strokes can do a lot when paired with the atmosphere and perspective of the first two layers.” His hometown of Kansas City and his travels inspire the creation of his work. “While I love painting excursions to Austin, Aspen, Mexico and Europe, Kansas City is my favorite place to paint. The way I paint now is really quite similar to the way I began—not

much has changed. I pick a place, I paint it. But I’ve come to realize that there is something much more significant going on. The places we love often go without the savoring they deserve. We keep moving. We see a thousand incredible images a day, and they leave as quickly as they come. Painting a place is slowing down, savoring, deciding to look at something for hours and searching for the details that make it what it is.” For aspiring artists, Steven says to not let fear guide your decision to create. “All I have is my own experience, but I almost never created any art because I thought it was only for ‘artists.’ I almost never sold my art because I didn’t know if people would connect with it. I was wrong on both of those accounts. Had I let those misconceptions and fears guide my decisions, I would have missed out on one of the richest parts of my life.” To see more of Steven’s work or see what local art show he will attend next, follow him on Instagram at @s.dragan.art. When your exterior living spaces are designed for today’s lifestyle, outdoor seasonal living can be enjoyed nearly year-round. “Our outdoor entertaining market has exploded,” says Corbin Haughenberry, sales manager at Complete Home Concepts. “Due to the pandemic, our customers want to expand their homes, so they’re going ‘outside’ their four walls. We’re installing firepits and fireplaces and especially patio heaters, so homeowners can use their outdoor kitchens and patios throughout the year.” With Complete Home Concepts, homeowners can enjoy fully functional custom outdoor kitchens with options such as pizza ovens, wet bars, fireplaces, side burners, smokers, warming drawers and roasting spits, in addition to the fundamental grill, food prep station, sink, refrigerator and cabinets. “When designing your extraordinary outdoor space, we guide you through it from start to finish,” Corbin adds. “Spending time with loved ones outside allows you to relax and entertain in a whole new way. And, let’s face it, some food just has to be grilled!” Corbin, who is the grandson of the company’s founder, Jim Goodwin, is carrying on the family tradition at Complete Home Concepts, which has been serving the Kansas City area since 1977. What began as a stone veneer product manufacturer is now a full-service design, product, installation and construction/remodeling company with 94 employees and a 100,000 square-foot workshop and showroom in Riverside, Missouri.

“My grandfather’s little stone business was a family affair, and his kids helped clean out old, wax-coated restaurant boxes to prep them for molds. It was a cost-effective way to help the stone molds release cleaner and more efficiently, plus a good example of his continual work to improve and grow his business.” Today, Complete Home Concepts continues that legacy by researching, developing and offering environmentally friendly products with a commitment to honesty, fair business practices and loyalty to its employees. “More than 70 percent of our employees have been with the company at least 20 years,” Corbin adds. “We have service technicians who have been with us nearly 35 years and a stone mason for 40 years. Not only do we treat every employee as a family member, but we consider our customers as part of that family. Our customers not only know us, but they trust us.” Corbin says the company’s “sheer drive” ensures customers receive the right products and straightforward product knowledge. “We’ve never been about selling the biggest, trendiest

Get your life back!
BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.
