It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. January is the perfect time to reflect on the past year and make a conscious decision to make positive changes. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them.I have learned a lot from this past year and how important it is to prioritize our health. As a busy mom of 4, I routinely put everyone else’s needs before my own, and while that is very natural parental behavior, it can sometimes take a toll, so I am learning the importance of balance. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2022!

What’s in Your Cart? HEALTHY AND AFFORDABLE MEAL PREP FOR YOUR LIFE!
If you find yourself skipping meals because you don’t have time, or if you believe eating healthy is unaffordable, fear not and read on! As a dietitian, I can tell you that eating healthy is easier than you think if you follow these tips:
TIP #1. YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK.
ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN-AYOADE, MBA, MS, RD, LD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
· Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. · Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. · Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. · Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. CONTINUED >
JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / L E AWO O D
13
TIP #2. CHOOSE INGREDIENTS THAT ARE VERSATILE AND CAN BE USED IN MULTIPLE MEALS TO REDUCE WASTE AND SAVE MONEY. · Example: Choose familiar recipes for tacos, chili or spaghetti in the same week to use all your ground beef or turkey. I brown the ground beef and portion it in freezer bags flattened out for space saving freezing and time-saving cooking. · Pre-cut vegetables can be used for fresh ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking, like salads and sandwiches or as part of a cooked recipe. Include leftovers in meal planning. · I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. · Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. · Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.
TIP # 3. MAKE A GROCERY LIST BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING · A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. · Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. · Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plant-based protein.
14
T R E N D SE T T E R | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
· Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. · Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.
TIP # 4. TRY NOT TO GROCERY SHOP WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY · Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. · The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.
TIP # 5. HEALTHY SNACKS ARE POSSIBLE The total amount of snacks you prepare will depend on the required number of snacks planned daily, based on your health and wellness goals. My snacks of choice include: · Nut butters with crackers or pretzels · Fresh fruit (whole or pre-cut) · Sliced vegetables · String cheese, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus · Home-made trail mix with dried fruit, unsalted nuts and seeds, to limit sugar and sodium intake Portioning snacks during your overall meal prep prevents mindless snacking without knowing how much you are actually eating. Meal prepping can improve your health and your life! Contact: Claudia Martin-Ayoade, MBA, MS, RDN, LD. Registered dietitian/nutritionist at Claudia4RD@gmail.com and agesmartnutrition.com

BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

As we all emerge from the holiday season, we are craving comfort food to fill our hearts and souls. Thank goodness there is a locale to do just that! True Food Kitchen, which opened in the winter of 2019, has been serving anti-inflammatory food which is easily digested and promotes wellness. “We have 39 locations around the country and are opening four more in the coming year,” says Christine Ferris, director of marketing. “The concept of True Food Kitchen was founded in 2008 by Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative medicine doctor. He founded the anti-inflammatory diet, which promotes eating a wholesome diet of nutrient-dense ingredients that positively impact the way you feel. Ingredients are sustainably sourced, and the partners they buy food from are the top of the top. All meat is grass-fed and hormone free. Wines are all organic, biodynamic or sustainable from the finest growers in California. Every ingredient that goes into what is on your plate is clean. They also can specifically strategize with you to adapt foods to whatever diet you follow, from vegetarian, paleo, carb or gluten free. The menu is fundamentally based on science, which ensures all its “craveable”

dishes and drinks work to increase the longevity of people and the planet. “Our menu continues to change with the seasons, and we don’t sacrifice taste for flavor,” Christine says. “Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season means you get the most nutrients and they are the most flavorful.” Their mission is to inspire people to eat better, feel better and ultimately live better. To further offer their foods to more people, they have two locations that allow people to order to go, one in Tempe, Arizona, and one in San Jose, California. This month, they are introducing a few new winter dishes to keep people healthy and strong, delicious and detoxifying. This includes a new Winter Immunity Soup made with edamame beans to help you feel full, bean sprouts, carrots and more. They are also offering a Daily Reset Package
for the month of January that people can order, which includes juices, kale sides and more. They are keeping their top-selling menu available. “This includes lots of vegetables, lots of warming foods. Our menu is comprised of favorites with a healthy twist,” she says. “For example, regular Chicken Parmesan can be over 1,000 calories. Ours is grilled chicken breast made with less breading and a side of seasonal vegetables, which reduces calories. Our pizza is made with house-made flax dough. Think of all these as comfort food with a healthy twist.” True Food Kitchen emphasizes community and holds seminars and classes. Each restaurant has its own chef-led culinary team who takes ingredients, spices and unique finds to bold new heights, with an eye for peak-season freshness, bright colors and creative takes on classic favorites.

I think I may have found what is missing in the car shopping experience, peace of mind! As I talked with local businessman and the founder of OneRequest, Eric Westphal, I kept thinking to myself: “How has this aspect of car shopping not existed till now?” Eric dreamed up the idea of his company out of a desire to serve car shoppers and to change the experience for the masses. He had a personal experience of being aggravated while looking for a car and thought during that process, ‘If other industries have grown and changed to serve their customers, then why hasn’t the process of buying a car not changed all that much?’ He founded OneRequest in 2020 and now, just two years later, has more than 20 employees and is continuing to grow. His business is not merely a “car shopping made easy” desire but is backed by passion to truly serve the car shopper. Eric is not a stranger to the stress and frustration that seems to befall any person needing a new car, which has given him the desire to step into the gap and make a change for all future car shoppers. The business looks similar to other car shopping websites but differs in the most important ways. For instance, when you go to their website, you can search for whatever kind of car you are looking for within a database of cars from
dealerships nationwide. This enables you, the car shopper, to peruse whatever kind of vehicle you need from dealerships all across the country and then contact the dealership through the OneRequest website. By communicating solely through the OneRequest website, after you have found the car you are interested in, you then request to start a conversation with that specific dealership. They are not given any of your personal information until you give it to them or ask OneRequest to share on your behalf. Unlike other car companies, OneRequest does not sell cars, such as cars.com and CarGurus. They help you shop for one. In addition, they have an option, for a fee, their concierge service, where you can tell them what kind of car you are looking for and how much you want to pay, and they will search for it and do all the negotiating on your behalf. Ummm, yes, please! There are absolutely no fees unless you use their concierge service or trade-in option. You feel safe, and your information is safe as OneRequest never sells your information to marketing companies. No more spam emails! The next time you are thinking about shopping for a car, you can find them online at onerequest.com, or you can download their free app. This allows for a more efficient, safe and stressfree car shopping experience which leaves you happy with the car you have found and no longer wishing away the experience.

Whatever your taste buds crave in your wineglass and on your plate, they will come alive here. Although everyone who visits has their own special favorite, one that stands out to most is Dierberg–Star Lane–Three Saints Tasting room. This is attached to the Hermannhoff Winery facility in the downtown area. Directly across from the train station. Dierberg, Star Lane and Three Saints offer California produced wine. It is owned by Jim and Mary Dierberg, who also own Hermannhoff Winery. They purchased the winery in 1974 and continue to raise its reputation as a place for education and entertainment. They also own Drum Canyon, Dierberg and Star Lane Vineyards in Santa Barbara, California, where they raise traditional European varietals. Today, the entire operation is one big family affair, with their grown children and their spouses intimately involved in day-to-day operations of the vineyards and winery. 330 East First Street, Hermann, MO 65041. For the best tasting experience, Adam Puchta Winery can’t be beat. They offer small bites of chocolate and shortbread with certain tastings so you can experience unique flavors. There is one combo with a lime shortbread and one of their wines that ends up tasting like a margarita! It is a fun thing to experience. The oldest continuously owned family winery in the United States, ownership has been in the hands of the Puchtas for seven generations since 1855. Tim Puchta, sixth generation, and his son, Parker Puchta, seventh generation, continue to operate the winery, while son, Spencer Puchta, also seventh generation, has ventured out on his own. He still takes part in helping out at times. Their Estate Norton is award-winning. You can stay in their guesthaus or cabin for a little slice of wine country paradise. 1947 Frene Creek Rd., Hermann, MO 65041, 573486-5596. Visit adampuchtawine.com to read their entire history.

For the best tour, choose Stone Hill Winery, which is known as the biggest and nicest of the facilities in Hermann. They give a great tour with lots of history, so if you want to hear about how Missouri wines began, and see some original cellars, this is the tour to take. Norton, Missouri’s official state grape produces a big, full-bodied red. This is the flagship wine of Stone Hill. The 2011 Norton and 2012 Cross J Norton both won a trifecta of awards, including the coveted Missouri Governor’s Cup, adding to eight other Stone Hill Governor Cup awards. They also use such grapes as Vidal, Chardonel and Vignoles. This winery is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1965, local farmers Jim and Betty Held, with their four children, purchased and moved into the original winery and restored it, along with the restaurant. Ruby Jean’s Juicery ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Leawood will soon have a new spot for fresh juices, smoothies and healthy meals. 11828 Roe Avenue will be the home of Ruby Jean’s Juicery in early January. The business has two other locations in Kansas City, Missouri at 3000 Troost Avenue, which includes a fullscale kitchen with a sit-down option, and to-go style bar inside Whole Foods at 301 East 51st Street. The Leawood location’s menu will include some breakfast items such as breakfast burritos, scramble bowls and avocado toast and several lunch items such as wraps, salads and bowls. It will also have a list of

healthy snacks such as sweet potato brownies, protein rounds, power toast and acai bowls. Customers can also find a list of fresh juices, smoothies and performance shakes to choose from. For owner Chris Goode, the clean eats business represents much more than just the items on the menu. The name Ruby Jean, and the inspiration for the business, comes from Goode’s late grandmother who died of Type 2 diabetes at age 61. “We exist because of my grandmother at the core,” Chris says. “I look at it as food took her from us.”

Chris believes his grandmother’s diet, centered heavily on “soul” food because of the way she was raised, contributed to her death. Chris wants to inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle when it comes to food to prevent families from going through the same tragedy he and his family did. “I think there’s something beautiful about health, but there’s also something scary about it when you don’t have it,” Chris says. “A lack of health doesn’t know any boundaries, it doesn’t stop and say, ‘oh you’re wealthy,’ or ‘oh you’re a Democrat or a Republican.’” Part of the vision for his business is not only to encourage a healthy lifestyle but to create unity and inclusiveness around a culture that has often been exclusive. Chris is proud that his business has existed in a way that has broken down some of those barriers in the community. The Troost location was the first business of its kind to exist on the east side of Kansas City. Chris says customers are often surprised at how much they enjoy the food or drinks at Ruby Jean’s. He loves being able to introduce a clean smoothie or fresh juice to someone who has never had it. “There’s a notion that healthy food has to be disgusting,” Chris says. “They’re completely shocked, like, wait this is actually good.” Chris says choosing Leawood as the business’s next location helps further drive home his mission to break down barriers. “There’s no difference in those people even though there’s a higher disposable income, it’s a more affluent, stable and defined community,” Chris says. “I think it puts action behind that statement of when it comes to health or a lack of health we’re all the same.” As a man of faith, Chris says it’s a blessing to be able to operate a business that creates any amount of revenue while also helping enhance people’s lives.

“There’s a notion that healthy food has to be disgusting,” Chris says. “They’re completely shocked, like, wait this is actually good.”
“I can’t really describe the feeling, still to this day, even after six years in business, when somebody comes into our doors for the first time, and they’re a little apprehensive, but they go ahead and make the purchase and they like it and they become a repeat customer,” Chris says. Chris says the business’s slogan says it all: “We make juice for a reason.” “To be able to actually provide action to those words, I’m just grateful for it, I’m not going to act like it’s easy, it’s hard, but it’s rewarding,” Chris says.

LUXURY IN THE VILLAGE OF LOCH LLOYD Every home should include a statement piece. Something that stops guests in their tracks and elicits a “wow.” But what if every room was a statement? That lofty goal wasn’t always the plan for these Loch Lloyd homeowners, but both agreed it was time for an update, and they needed help. Enter Stephanie Stroud, of Stephanie Stroud Interiors, to lead the process. “We were looking to hire someone who could set a vision beyond our comfort zone and who could bring us a more current design. Stephanie was a perfect match,” explains the homeowner. The project began in the living room. The homeowners wanted a completely new look, a room not only for entertaining friends but also as a place to relax. “The living room is your focus as you enter the home, yet nothing really special was happening in the space. I knew we could make the home’s first impression a showstopper, but first we needed to address its lack of architectural features,” Stephanie says. The addition of ceiling beams, and a re-imagined fireplace wall sets the stage for ‘his and hers’ blue velvet sofas, a stone cocktail table and a stunning chandelier. What was once bland and overlooked now makes a statement. "Once the living room was completed, it looked so great, the rest of the house paled in comparison, and it was clear we needed to keep going,” notes the homeowner.
So, what began as a refresh in the living room turned into a complete remodel of the main floor, including the kitchen, the addition of a functional mudroom, and a powder room. To create more opportunities for entertaining, a unique bar was also added in the hallway. In addition, Stephanie incorporated a sink into an existing cabinet, added acrylic shelves, metallic wallpaper and modern crystal sconces to give the space a final dash of elegance.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL Nothing in this Loch Lloyd renovation was overlooked. From the unique hardware to the custom glass fireplace tile, to the replacement of nearly all the light fixtures. “Stephanie refers to lighting as ‘the jewelry of the home’ and I absolutely agree,” the homeowner says. “We ended up updating all of our lighting throughout the living, dining, kitchen/hearth and bedrooms, and I absolutely love all the unique design details she incorporated.” Often, it’s the finishing touches that really round out a space. “It’s always exciting when a client wants to take a design project further,” Stephanie notes. “We especially had fun with the kitchen because the transformation was so dramatic.” Upper cabinets were removed to create an open and airy feel while blue cabinetry was selected that perfectly complements

the living room’s color scheme. “My client fell in love with their kitchen countertop stone early on in our design process when we were considering it for the living room fireplace. While it did not ultimately work in that space, we used it as our jumping-off point when the kitchen design began,” Stephanie explains. Deciding to embark on a remodeling project is sure to generate plenty of stress, second-guessing and painful concessions. But if done correctly, you just might fall in love with your home all over again. Design by Stephanie Stroud Interiors stephaniestroudinteriors.com 913.226.5401

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 44
S ELF CA R E | WEL L NESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

BioBalance Health® helps mid-life people live better.
The mother daughter team of doctors Kathy Maupin and Rachel Sullivan offer breakthrough ideas and methods for optimal wellness. ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPE RT | PHOTOG R APHY BY JANIE JONE S

She wanted to feel like herself again! That is why Dr. Kathy Maupin, OB-GYN, created her estrogen and testosterone pellet practice in 2002, BioBalance Health. A Kansas City native, she had her ovaries removed at age 48 due to painful endometriosis. She almost gave up hope until she was treated with bioidentical hormone pellets, which literally saved her life. BioBalance was born more than 19 years ago when she realized this treatment helped her maintain youthful energy, healthy weight and stamina, and no one else in St. Louis provided this treatment. “In 2002, after my hysterectomy, I was delivering twins at the hospital, and a nurse noticed something was very wrong with me,” Dr. Maupin explains. “The nurse who asked me what was wrong was Gina Tutera, and she told me her brother Gino Tutera, MD treated women with the same symptoms with hormone pellets in California, and he could help me. I met him the next day, and he told me he could bring me back to health with testosterone and estradiol pellets. He did, and I was immediately better.” Dr. Tutera, originally an OB-GYN in Kansas City, then trained her. Three years after establishing her St. Louis BioBalance practice, she bought Tutera’s KC pellet practice. At the time, she had the only testosterone and estradiol pellet practice in KC. Dr. Maupin says that testosterone and estradiol pellets are the most effective treatment for menopause and low T. Pellets are inserted sterilely in the fat under the skin of the hip where they dissolve over four to six months. The procedure is fast and simple. The expertise of Drs. Sullivan and Maupin come into play when they calculate dosage and balance other hormone deficiencies. This type of hormone pellet treatment requires a hormone pellet-dedicated practice. “We order our bio-identical pellets from an FDA approved compounding pharmacy for each patient,” she explains. Her daughter and partner, Rachel M. Sullivan, D.O., is a board-certified osteopathic family physician. Dr. Sullivan also lived in Kansas City after graduating from her residency in Houston, Texas while working for BioBalance. She now lives in St. Louis and practices exclusively with her mother bringing patients over 40 back to health. However, both doctors offer much more than hormone pellets. Their treatment philosophy is to help people achieve optimal health through promoting a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention, based on a foundation of testosterone and estradiol pellets by employing the tools of modern medicine plus holistic treatments. “I developed my practice here in Kansas City, while I was an OB-GYN in St. Louis and a Biobalance doctor, too,” Dr. Maupin says. “Because BioBalance was such a success, I stopped doing OB-GYN in 2010 and concentrated on BioBalance hormone pellet replacement in both cities. Just at the right time my daughter joined me. I don’t know what I would have done without her! We have built our Kansas City practice with the help of Lori Gordon, nurse practitioner, who is our anchor practitioner in KC. We love coming to KC! Dr. Maupin has written two books, The Secret Female Hormone for women, and Got Testosterone? For men. Their website, Biobalancehealth.com has information to help people make a decision about replacing testosterone and estradiol as they age. Dr Maupin has also published more than 570 health casts on YouTube. “We are not just all about the money, however insurance does not cover what we do. My daughter and I screen patients before we initially see them to determine if we can help them. Prospective patients send in their health history and their blood work before we see them. If we can’t help a patient, we let them know before they spend any money. We are dedicated to treating women and men who have testosterone and/ or estradiol deficiency. We do not treat young male weightlifters or anyone who has not finished their family,” she confirms. “Patients have an hour-long consult with one of the doctors to go over their health history, symptoms, diet, exercise, medication, supplements and everything that affects their health. Patients are given pellets and a treatment plan at the first visit. Then they come in two to three times a year for maintenance pellets and see our nurse practitioner, Lori Gordon.” Dr. Maupin enjoys working with her daughter, who joined BioBalance in 2015. Dr. Sullivan and her husband moved into a house near the Plaza which they were rehabbing, when Dr. Maupin’s St. Louis practice got very busy. Dr. Sullivan and family moved to St. Louis and still loves the Kansas City BioBalance practice. Kathy Maupin (formerly Kathy Cartier) grew up in South Kansas City and attended Center High School, class of ‘73. “We had a great science program which produced many doctors out of my class!” she states. “I actually see a lot of my friends from high school and my Mizzou sorority sisters in my practice as patients.” Dr. Maupin believes as people with symptoms of testosterone and estrogen deficiency make plans for the new year, they should plan to feel better and get healthy. A visit to BioBalance Health is a great way to start. For more information, visit biobalancehealth.com. They are located at 4400 Broadway, Suite 303, KCMO 64111, in the doctor’s building.
