Letter from the Editor AS SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN AND THE KIDS ARE GETTING READY TO HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL, WE ARE SQUEEZING IN ALL THE LAST MINUTE SUMMER ACTIVITIES TO FINISH WITH A BANG. Our summer was filled with baseball, baseball and more baseball, and as much as I enjoyed every minute of it, I feel a sigh of relief to have my weekends back before fall sports begin. My oldest heads off to college in a few short weeks, and let me tell you, saying goodbye to your firstborn is not for the faint of heart. While I am so excited for the adventure he is about

to embark on as a college student, it is surreal that we are already at this point in life where he will not be here with us every day. Many of you are in the same boat —sending your kids back to school and perhaps off to college in the next few weeks. I am hopeful for a more normal school year for our children this fall and that they are able to make meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. This month’s issue is dedicated to kids and pets. We have compiled a list of family-friendly experiences, share a behind the scenes look at Deanna Rose Farmstead, introduce you to a child author, and also learn about Children’s Mercy frontline furry friends. We also wanted to give you a peek at one of our favorite new cafés in Leawood, Outta the Blue Cafe, so be sure to check them out.

MEMO-

RIES AT DEANNA ROSE CHILDREN’S FARMSTEAD IN OVERLAND PARK. Animal Care Supervisor Sarah Higgerson gives a behind the scenes look at what it takes to run a farm with over 230 animals. Q: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND JOURNEY TO WORKING AT THE ZOO? A: I grew up in Overland Park and visited Deanna Rose countless times as a child. It helped spark my love of animals and my career path with them. I attended Kansas State University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management and Ecology. After graduating, I accepted my first job as an animal keeper at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. Upon moving back home, Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead was hiring an Animal Care Assistant, and I’ve been working here ever since.

ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

Q: WHAT GOES INTO KEEPING THE ANIMALS HAPPY AND HEALTHY?

A: All the animals have different care and diet requirements. We currently have 234 animals residing at the Farmstead, and every animal has their own Google sheets spreadsheet log. We keep track of everything from their current location to their name, age, sex, vaccinations, deworming, hoof trims, baths, shearing, ailments and so on. Every day all animals are checked, given feed, and water quality levels are checked. My staff and I do everything from cleaning pens and grooming animals to fixing fences and speaking with the public. Once a month our local vet, Dr. Landau, assesses all animals and helps with any medical issues. We also have to maintain current licenses from U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the USDA.

Q: ARE THERE A FEW ANIMALS WITH FUN, STRONG PERSONALITIES THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO HIGHLIGHT AND SHARE WITH OUR READERS? A: Belle, our miniature donkey, loves to be groomed and will follow us around and nudge us if we are grooming one of her other pen mates. She hates flies so much that she will bray at the animal care staff if we walk by. She will do so until one of us puts fly spray on her legs—it’s hilarious!

Another is Tatanka, our bison. He came here as a calf and

has grown up here. He’s this huge, one ton animal, but he’s the biggest baby when it comes to animal care staff in his enclo-

sure. He’ll get real close to us, but if we make any sudden or abrupt sound or movements he’ll take off like he’s got a fire under his tail. He plays with a big plastic barrel that sometimes gets stuck behind the back fence. We remove it and he gets all excited about it. If he’s feeling really frisky, you can see him running and pronging around his exhibit. It’s super cute! Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ZOO ATMOSPHERE TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER VISITED? A: It’s an excellent and unique place for people of all ages to come and enjoy themselves. We are similar to a formal zoo yet we are more affordable and require much less walking than a typical zoo. We also offer much more in the way of history as we try to resemble a turn of the century farmstead and town. We have a main street, school house, Native American encampment and blacksmith shop. There’s other activities you

can add to your visit with our mining sluice area, bamboo rod fishing, bottles to feed our baby goats and a horse drawn wagon ride! We even have a live cow milking demonstration in the dairy barn daily at 9:30 a.m. We have a splash area behind our goose pond, an old fashioned ice cream parlor for hand scooped ice cream and a general store which serves as our gift shop. Q: WHAT ARE GUESTS MOST SURPRISED TO LEARN? A: One of the things I get asked a lot is where do the animals go during the winter when we are closed to the public? It seems to surprise people that we keep the

I have witnessed and assisted in hundreds of goat births. We name each and every one—the

fun part is choosing a name theme each season. In the past, we’ve used superheroes and villains, Harry Potter, Pokémon, Disney characters and Chiefs players names. The kids this season are

majority of them here. The geese, swans, turkeys, quail, pigs and calves are loaned to us from various local farmers and returned after the season ends. All the other animals reside here year-round with us. We have two cows that switch off breeding each season so we can do live milking demos, so one has a calf and gets milked during the season and the other goes offsite to visit a bull during the summer. This way our girls get a break in between having calves. Another thing people don’t realize is that all 50-70 baby goats we have are born onsite. Our big white dairy barn turns into the goat birthing area and has a geothermal floor that runs during the winter to keep

Whether fresh mountain air or sea breeze, it’s a welcome scent we’re loving, and the public response has been two thumbs up. “We think there’s a real hunger and desire for Kansas Citians to get out and explore their city again and having new spaces to discover is a big part of that,” Keith says. “Despite the challenges of this past year, we are really excited with the timing of how this project turned out.”

Keith adds that the Made in KC platform (a homegrown retail outlet for Kansas City area makers, designers and artists) fosters creating new concepts. “It’s really fun to be a part of a team that has such great creativity and is willing to take risks with spinoffs. It’s important to remember that the backbone for them is Made in KC. We take our coffee program that is nearly 100% local (from coffees to pastries and syrups) and build off that to create these other concepts. All that to say, whether it is ocean-themed, or mountain-themed, the heart of it is Kansas City.” Ninety percent of every dollar spent at Made in KC stores and cafes stays and recirculates throughout the local economy, Keith says, compared to bigger national brands, where sometimes less than 50% of every dollar stays locally or even has a negative impact on the local economy.

“Creating these micro economies between us, the artist, and the customer to keep more money in Kansas City ultimately helps everyone living and working in our region,” Keith says, adding that the business also contributes regularly to various nonprofits throughout the metro, most recently working with Children’s Mercy Hospital and The Big Slick, and GIFT (Generating Income for Tomorrow) with their Give Black Campaign. Watch Them Grow ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEANN PARKER

THE DAYS ARE LONG, BUT THE YEARS GO FAST. So they say with raising children. I have to agree with that sentiment. Each year as summer ends I find myself looking at my kids and reminding myself to “Watch them grow!” Both as a reminder to not miss the growth (with all the distractions and responsibilities that adult life brings) but also as reflection on how far they’ve come since the last time we turned the calendar page to August. Whether there are children in your life or not, I’m sure we can all agree that childhood is fleeting. Instead of stopping to smell the roses, I need to remind myself to “stop and watch them grow”—you can’t see it if you stare, but you’ll surely miss it if you blink! It helps me to set aside intentional time to be present with these fast little growers.

Leawood Lifestyle | August 2021

For us that looks like setting a special table to spend time sharing (or drawing) how we’ve seen them grow over the summer before jumping back into school routines. Making DIY game boards together and then having a family game night. Making snow cones for an after-dinner treat or, for a bigger wow factor, for breakfast! They will never forget that one, I promise. (Psst! my snow cones are made with fruit juice so it’s Mommy approved too!) As August rolls in and the calendar tells us that it’s time for back-to-school shopping, the weather does not usually agree that the times are changing. I find that it’s such a weird dance between what looks like the change of seasons when I open my calendar but not when I walk out my back door (heat wave!). On one hand, we’re still in full throttle of blazing temperatures in the Midwest and with no end in sight. At the same time, being thrown into back-to-school shopping, Meet-the-Teacher nights, resuming the regiment of packing school lunches, and if you’re a homeschool parent, all the to-do lists and lesson plans in order to launch into another school year. As we find ourselves with one foot in summer and the other in a classroom, how do we embrace and (dare I say) celebrate this month? Instead of feeling ungrounded in the juxtaposition of August, I am inviting myself, and anyone who would join me, to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the in-between seasons that this month brings. My hope is that these ideas help spark your imagination on how to keep you cool in the heat, launch your kiddos into a new school year, and to set aside time to watch them grow.

DIY Game Boards Welcome more play into your life with this little DIY project. At our house we like to keep outdoor game boards around for short moments together as well as full blown game nights. These game boards are meant to be kept outside but could also be brought indoors as well. MATERIALS + Pebbles for Checkers, 24 similar sized + Small stones for Tic-Tac-Toe, 8 similar sized + Acrylic paints (black, red, yellow and white) + Paint brush + Raw wooden boards + black paint marker + Reclaimed wood + black acrylic paint + Polycrylic spray INSTRUCTIONS 1. Game Pieces: Paint your rocks with acrylic paint. For Tic-Tac-Toe you’ll need a total of 8 rocks, 4 of each type (here I’ve painted 4 lady bugs and 4 bumble bees). For Checkers you’ll need a total of 24 rocks, 12 of each color (here I’ve used black stones, painting half of them red). 2. Game Board: For raw wood (such as our Tic-Tac-Toe board), use a ruler and black paint marker to create board lines. For reclaimed or treated wood, use paint. Let game pieces and game boards fully dry. Seal with a polycrylic spray for protection from heat and moisture.

Snow Cones We adore snow cones at our house! If you’ve been to our house then we’ve probably served them to you. A shaved ice machine makes it oh-so-easy! You can purchase premade snow cone syrup flavors or make your own healthier version by using fruit juice concentrates. Simply thaw the frozen fruit juice concentrate and put the liquid into squeezy bottles for an easy way to pour over shaved ice. ASSEMBLE + Ice, lots of ice! + Snow Cone Machine + Snow Cone Cups + Snow Cone Straws + Snow Cone Syrups (or frozen juice concentrates, thawed) 42

Leawood Lifestyle | August 2021

Use a snow cone machine to shave ice into snow cone cups. Top with your favorite flavor—either store bought snow cone syrups, homemade syrups, or our favorite—fruit concentrates. Stay cool and celebrate the last days of summer heat!

Tablescape Guide To recreate this tablescape, see the list of items below. This list is meant to be used as a guide and not a rule book. Using items that you already own not only saves you a shopping trip but also encourages (often forces) creativity! All it takes to make a tablescape beautiful is by using LAYERS both vertically and horizontally. For layering vertically, create a centerpiece with three different heights. On this tablescape I used: 1) a plant for the highest layer 2) outdoor spheres as a midsized layer 3) wooden items such as game pieces and game boards for the lower layer For layering horizontally, layer your place settings by using 1) terracotta plant saucers, 2) green plates, and 3) mini cupcake stands topped with a small terracotta pot and flower. CENTERPIECE ITEMS {LAYER VERTICALLY} + Large plant (I used my Pothos) + Game pieces (yard dice shown here) + DIY game boards (see instructions above) PLACE SETTING ITEMS {LAYER HORIZONTALLY} You will need one of each item per guest at your table: + Small terracotta pot + Small wooden coaster + Mini cupcake stand + Green plate + Tea towel (instead of napkins) + 12.2 inch terracotta plant saucer (as plate chargers) + Flowers (faux or real)

Invisible Fence keeps your four-legged friends visible!

WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO RELAX WHEN YOUR DOG SLIPS THROUGH THE DOOR AND DASHES OUT INTO THE YARD? With Invisible Fence® Brand, you can be assured he will not be running into the street, digging up your flower beds or disappearing into the woods or neighborhood. And there will definitely be no need to scour around for enough lumber to build a fence that limits your sight and obstructs your landscape. Heart of America Invisible Fence in Leawood offers installation of the system, and even comes to your house to train your dog to assure it is safe, and no problem for the “humans.” “Our one-of-a-kind GPS containment solution, which is exclusive to Invisible Fence® Brand, uses 32 satellites to create a totally custom wireless boundary around properties three acres and up,” says Jane Kenney, owner, Design Mojo, Marketing Agency for Heart of America Invisible Fence. “We also offer a Doorman™ Automated Pet Door exclusive to Invisible Fence® Brand. Our automated pet door operates by the same Computer Collar as our indoor and outdoor solutions, giving your pets free passage indoors and out, with no break in their protection and no interruption to your day, or night.” They can also install parameters inside the outer boundary around the property, for example, surrounding gardens, flowerbeds, pools and more. Your cat can also be trained to stay off indoor furniture or leave the Christmas tree and plants alone. This system works like a motion detector.

We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may
