Letter from the Editor AFTER 11 YEARS OF SERVING THE LEAWOOD COMMUNITY, WE ARE EXCITED TO EXPAND LEAWOOD LIFESTYLE TO SERVE THE VILLAGE OF LOCH LLOYD, AS WELL. We welcome you to the Lifestyle family and look forward to sharing the wonderful stories about the Village of Loch Lloyd with our neighbors and community. Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating women, and as I reflect on the women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. Among those are women who have made lasting impressions on my kids, and I would be remiss to not honor one that stands out amongst them all—my son’s former 4th grade teacher, Mrs. English. A teacher has the incredible power and influence to build a child up or tear them down in a way that can create a lasting impact. I am sure all of us can think back on experiences with our own former teachers, both positive and negative, that influenced how we felt about learning and about ourselves in general. Shelly English is a teacher that is intentional about

My oldest son struggled with the tough combination of being both ADHD and gifted simultaneously, and while we now realize those have turned into strengths as a teenager, it can be a very tough combination in elementary school. After kindergarten, his first few years were rough, and as a result, he began to develop a few nervous habits. Thankfully, he was placed in Mrs. English’s 4th grade class at such an influential time in his life. She was like a soothing blanket to his soul, and she found ways to help him

BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

DAY I N 10
WHILE NO DAY IS EXACTLY THE SAME, ONE PIECE OF BECKY HILLYARD’S ROUTINE REMAINS CONSISTENT—A MORNING WORKOUT. Hillyard, mother of three children and creator of the blog Cella Jane, values this time in her day because it’s an hour reserved for herself. “Yes, you get all the health benefits and physical, positive things from [working out], but it’s more mental for me,” she says. “I need it just to

about work and stuff, so that’s why it has become so important to me.” So important that even her family is accustomed to it.
On a typical day, post-workout she’ll make breakfast, get the kids ready for school and the baby fed and ready for the day before she sits down behind the computer. This part of the morning is reserved for more administrative tasks, like sorting through her inbox, meeting with team members, reviewing upcoming deadlines and so on. While she acknowledges this part of the job isn’t glamorous, it’s work she enjoys. She started Cella Jane about eight years ago and then moved to Kansas City 6 years ago for her husband’s job. Hillyard was inspired by her love of fashion, a healthy lifestyle and other blogs, like Sincerely Jules. The first piece of content she shared was a healthy taco recipe. “For the longest time, it was just a hobby and something completely random where all my friends were like ‘What is she doing?’” she recalls. “I think once I moved to Kansas City I was forced to quit my other jobs, and it motivated me to take more time for the blog and focus a little bit more. I saw brands were interested, and it sort of just grew from there.”

Hillyard is currently in the process of building a home, so after lunch she will often meet with the project manager and contractor. While she describes it as a mini full-time job, she has found an opportunity to share the process with her followers. Events in Hillyard’s personal life often inform the content she posts. “That’s made [building the home] so fun, to be able to share more home content,” she says. “I’ve always loved home content. And then obviously having a new baby this year—that’s what I plan content around— sharing a lot in my motherhood. It makes it real and relatable and fun for people to follow along.” She has always wanted readers to visit Cella Jane for advice as they would a friend. “Come to me as a friend, as in, ‘Oh, what baby carrier do you love? What shoes did you wear non-stop last year? I need them,’” she describes. “Things like that, everyday things you would ask maybe a friend or go to for advice, like ‘Hey, how did you get your baby from breast to bottle? I saw you had a problem with that.’” Before picking the kids up from school, her late afternoons may include a photoshoot or virtual meetings with her manager or brands she’s partnering with. She will step away from work once the kids are home to make dinner, play and help with homework before they’re in bed around 8 p.m. She acknowledges it’s often difficult to achieve perfect mom/work/life balance. “There’s never a good balance,” she says. “I’m always struggling, and I feel like the whole perfect mom balance is impossible to achieve. You always feel mom guilt, or you’re always working or always overwhelmed and that’s what I am. That’s the season of my life right now.” When asked what advice she’d share with new moms, she says, “Savor it. Let it be what it is. Ignore everything else. All that matters is you loving your baby. Give yourself grace. Know that life will resume, but it will be even better than it was before. The days are long and hard, but the years are short and sweet. One day you’ll miss the days that felt impossible.”

QUEEN OF HEARTS (CONTINUED) number of participating celebrities ballooned. Word, it seemed, had gotten around Hollywood circles about this magical event in the heart of America. The reason was simple: Children’s Mercy Hospital. The beloved not-for-profit is world-renowned for pediatric care, oncology and research. While celebrities participate in many charitable events, Big Slick holds one key difference, according to Rudd: “Those involved put it to me this way: this is the only event where we actually get to see the impact of our charitable giving firsthand. We get to see the faces and places that it’s all for.” Though the event went virtual in 2020, they still shattered expectations, generating over $2 million—bringing the total raised for the hospital to over $12 million in the event’s 11-year history. Despite Big Slick’s fundraising success, Gloria Rudd isn’t yet satisfied. “I just wish that we could do more.” A sentiment that sums up an exceptional life defined by always aiming higher. England’s loss is Kansas City’s gain. Learn all about Big Slick 2021 at www.bigslickkc.org.

PARKVILLE RESIDENTS DEFINE THEIR SPACE WITH WINDOW TREATMENTS THAT DELIVER STYLE AND FUNCTION
DANA DUNAWAY HAS NEVER BUILT A HOME BEFORE. But the matriarch of this family of six was lucky to find professionals to guide her along every step of the way, even in the midst of a pandemic. Dana and her husband Bill designed and built the perfect home for their four kids, ranging in age from third grade to high school, with Jay Jackson Builders’ help. But when it came to the windows of their new home, they turned to the same pros used by Tamara Day—Solar Shield. Dunaway says that while many design decisions were simple and fun for her, window treatments were out of her depth. She asked interior designer Natalie McMillen for her thoughts and found Tim Sanders, founder of Solar Shield Blinds Shades Solutions. But what she got was much more than a single line of blinds.

“I met with him and Natalie at the house, and we went through every single window,” Dunaway says. “We talked through what would look good, how it was going to function. And he asked about my kids—what they do and how we live. Then he gave me all these cool options. I thought, wow, I actually changed my mind. I thought, OK, this is actually going to work better. And I could not have been happier with the things he recommended. He’s much more than an installer—he has really cool design ideas.” Those cool design ideas included treatments from several different lines that Solar Shield carriers. Sanders says that the variety of their stock is a function of their main goal—finding solutions for real people living in their homes.

Growing up in a small town in Central Wisconsin does not provide many options

in terms of trendy coffee shops. Although I love my hometown and am immensely thankful for where I was raised, it’s not exactly known for emulating the latest trends. This was a problem considering my love for coffee and all things aesthetic. As a kid, my family and I visited Kansas City quite often, and I had always looked forward to trying out all of the unique restaurants and coffee

already guessed, one of my favorite aspects of living here is constant access to the vast variety of cafes and coffee shops. Because there are so many options to choose from, selecting these few was extremely difficult. Pilgrim Coffee
Nevertheless, down below you’ll find just a handful of my go to spots in Johnson County. PILGRIM COFFEE 12643 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, Pilgrim Coffee has the most pleasant atmosphere and is perfect for a productive afternoon. I ordered their seasonal Ginger Flower latte; ½ ginger and ½ lavender made with their house made syrup. Everything about it was delicious, not to mention the beautiful latte art!

Pour Coffeehouse
FILLING STATION 7420 Johnson Dr, Mission The Filling Station has always been a favorite of mine since visiting Kansas City as a child. Its variety of drinks, friendly staff, and unique interior make for such a fun experience. The barista made me one of their espresso shots and one of their signature pressed juices. So yummy! FRONT RANGE 2718 W 53rd St, Fairway This quaint little coffee shop is so cozy and the ideal location to sit and read a good book. The barista was so kind and made me feel very welcome and cared for. I was served their popular Honey Lavender latte, and it couldn’t have been more enjoyable. JINKIES! 8350 W 151st St, Overland Park Jinkies! is one of the most unique coffee shops I’ve had the privilege of visiting so far. With its unique ‘70s themed interior and cozy atmosphere, Jinkies! is the perfect place to hang out and makes for such a fun experience. I had their Cookie Dough iced latte and had a hard time setting it down! I would highly recommend making this your new go-to coffee spot. POUR COFFEEHOUSE 11120 S Lone Elm Rd, Olathe Pour Coffeehouse has an array of yummy pastries and fun drinks to choose from. I ordered the Sassy Cuban latte made with rich Cuban espresso, dark chocolate, brown sugar and cinnamon. This is quickly becoming one of my favorites! HATTIE’S 4195 Somerset Dr, Prairie Village One of my favorite things about Hattie’s is its family-friendly atmosphere and personable staff. I had a Honey Lavender latte and a gluten free almond scone. All of their pastries are made in house, and they have many allergen-free options to choose from.
