Letter from the Editor SPRING SYMBOLIZES NEW BEGINNINGS TO ME EVEN MORE SO THAN THE NEW YEAR. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and after a long Midwest winter, the fresh, temperate air invites us to enjoy the outdoors. There is nothing better than opening up the windows on a nice day and letting the fresh air in or enjoying a patio on a warm spring night to usher in the season. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, the representation of new life awakens joy in the beauty

of our world. I love spring. One of my favorite childhood memories of spring involves preparing dozens of May Day baskets for neighbors. My sister and I loved to bring flowers to all of our neighbors, whether we knew them or not. Unbeknownst to my mother, we often cut flowers out of our neighbors’ yards to fill the baskets—homing in on the aromatic lilac bushes, peonies and the occasional tulip. At that young age, we didn’t realize that it wasn’t an acceptable thing to do, as we prepared huge bouquets of flowers that weren’t ours to cut and left them on doorsteps. Once my mother realized what we had been doing, she was mortified, but thankfully our sweet, elderly neighbor that got hit the hardest by our flower picking was well aware of our antics and let my mother know that she loved watching us create bouquets out of her flowers and then watching from the window as we delivered them door-to-door. Although I am sure her yard was not as pretty as it

yards and make a run to Trader Joe’s instead. There is something fun about dropping a flower or note or token of appreciation to the people we care about for no reason other than to let them know they are thought of. It is such a simple way to bring a little bit of cheer to the people in our lives. 514 W 26TH ST., KANSAS CITY, MO

BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

Now they are true vintage Airstream enthusiasts. They sold Stella, but the “silver bullet” calling never left and Chance Adventure Co was born. SPRING AND SUMMER USUALLY BRING MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO SIT OUTSIDE, FIND SOME SUN AND GRAB A GOOD BOOK. Whether you’re going to be on the beach, relaxing in the mountains or sitting in your backyard, I’ve picked a variety of genres and books that I think will appeal to many readers. I hope that even if you don’t gravitate towards some of these genres that you’ll give them a chance. I’ve never been a huge romance reader, but there have been so many smart books that I’ve missed just because I used to think “oh that’s not for me.” While we’re still in a time of uncertainty, reading offers an opportunity to transport you to a different time and place which is a wonderful thing when so many of us have been in the same place for so long! Maybe your annual summer trip to Cabo is on hold, well pick up “The Guncle” and be transported to Southern California or grab “Of Women and Salt” and picture yourself driving down the streets of Cuba! I really believe that you will find something amongst this list that makes you excited to read! If you are interested in finding more recommendations, you can visit my Instagram page @DowntoGettheFictionOn where I am always sharing what I’m reading and loving, or in some cases, reading and not loving.

THE GILDED ONES BY NAMINA FORNA Deka is awaiting the Blood Ceremony which will determine if she’s impure or an accepted member of her village. As she’s always struggled with feeling like an outcast and the fear of her blood running gold, she finds out that her fears are justified. Now she must decide if she will join the other girls of her kind and fight for the emperor or succumb to her fate in her village. What follows is a story of survival, hope, power and the ability to control your own destiny. Deka is a character you will find yourself rooting for, and there’s a lot of twists along the way that kept me turning the pages. I am not typically a fantasy reader, but I loved the world building, the relationships, and the ending made me excited for more! It’s an empowering novel and is great for readers of all ages. OF WOMEN AND SALT BY GABRIELA GARCIA Carmen is a Cuban immigrant living in Miami who tries to erase her family’s past by ignoring any talk of Cuba or her mother whom she hasn’t seen in many years. Her daughter, Jeanette, struggles with addiction but in a time of sobriety takes in her neighbor’s daughter, Ana, after her mother is detained by ICE. Told in a nonlinear timeline, the stories of these women intersect while we learn more about their own past and about life in Cuba. While considered historical fiction, this is also a story about family, personal struggles and how betrayal can change the trajectory of one’s path. I love a multigenerational family saga and really thought the historical elements from 19th-century Cuba to present day Miami really added to the story. It was an intricate telling of what this family had to overcome while dealing with what was happening historically during their lives.

CASA IS A LIGHT OF HOPE TO ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN (CONTINUED) “She was overwhelmed with the number of people she had to talk to, from investigators to social workers to parent aids, but once she understood my only objective was to advocate for her she was immediately grateful,” Kelly says, adding that because teens only have a few years before they age out of the system, every encounter becomes more important to help them gain confidence to be successful in the adult world without their past defining them. “I would encourage anybody who thinks about being a CASA volunteer to look into it,” Kelly says. “Once they do, they’re going to jump into it with both feet. It’s such an amazing organization. While the need is so great for volunteers, it also brings so much to the volunteer’s life knowing they can make a difference.” [CASA began in 1977 and has helped more than 2 million abused children nationwide. Casa desperately needs volunteers. No special skills or education are required—just a heart for helping children, a background check, and training (currently virtual). Volunteers spend about 10 flexible hours a month and have the option whether to work on a case, can choose an age group, and always have support of a case supervisor.]

BEAUTY IN THE YEAST ACCORDING TO HEAD BREWER FOR MARTIN CITY BREWING COMPANY NICK VAUGHN, TAKING INSPIRATION FROM THE BELGIAN STYLE OF BREWING KEEPS THEM CREATIVE. “Not being held to traditions, or confined to style guidelines, and just letting the beer be shaped by a yeast allows us to keep a beer lineup that is unique and exciting,” Vaughn says. An idea for a new MCBC beer can really start anywhere. “Sometimes a beer is created after suggestions or feedback from customers. Sometimes one of our brewery team members has an idea they want to try. And sometimes it’s just experimenting with flavor profiles or bringing back a beer of ours that we loved in the past but trying something a little different with the recipe,” Creative Director Lynne Pierce says.

MARTIN CITY BREWING COMPANY DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM THE BELGIAN STYLE OF BREWING, WHERE YEAST PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE.

The brewery was opened in 2014 by Matt Moore and Chance Adams out of a desire for bolder, local beer. Today, their core offerings include Hard Way IPA, Abbey Ale and Survival Blond among others. As warmer, springtime weather fills the upcoming forecast, Pierce recommends their Yes Way José and Block Party beers because they’re crisp, light and refreshing. She notes that for this year’s release of Yes Way José, a Mexican Style Lager, there’s an extra hint of lime. Their four locations (Lee’s Summit, Mission Farms as well as two restaurants in Martin City) also serve food. Their menus have options for everyone, such as a smoked salmon BLT sandwich, spicy chicken wrap, veggie pizza and a dessert pizza. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the restaurant industry, with restrictions on indoor dining and the stay-at-home order last year, Martin City Brewing Company was able to adapt and continued to focus on their curbside and delivery services.

“We could not have ever imagined the support that we
would receive from our customers and community and are so thankful for them each and every day,” Pierce says. “With four restaurants across the metro, we are now able to be that friendly, neighborhood spot for so many people. Our goal is, and always has been, to serve Kansas City a craft beer that they’ll love, and the response to what we have built has been more than we could ask for. Our customers are what keep us growing, improving and experimenting so that we can bring them the best food, drink and experience possible.” While customers have remained loyal throughout the a complete indoor dining experience for their friends, family and community for granted. “We are so appreciative of the support they’ve shown through these unprecedented times, but we just can’t wait to safely and comfortably have our restaurants full and be a place that friends and families can go to reconnect,” she says.

DIY ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER
A Chemical-Free Home
DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
