LIFESTYLE LETTER

MARCH 2021 PUBLISHER

Stacey Smith | stacey.smith@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Letter from the Editor THIS MONTH’S ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO HOME AND DESIGN, AND WITH THE UNIQUE YEAR THAT WE HAVE ALL JUST HAD, MANY OF US HAVE SPENT A LOT MORE TIME IN OUR HOMES. We have transformed our space to accommodate in-home classrooms and study spaces, home offices and extra areas for entertainment and working out. I have always enjoyed renovating and redecorating our home, but this year was more about utilizing the space we have in the best way possible for functionality.

I love having my kids at home, but I’m not going to lie—this year has been a lot of togetherness and trying to find ways to accommodate individual needs. With hybrid learning and kids home on zoom classes, my house has felt a little bit like a library with a barrage of text messages received daily reminding me that I need to talk quieter because their zoom class can hear me. I know many of us have learned to be more flexible and creative about how we use and share our space this year. Although it has been challenging to find a new way of learning and working from home, I do value the extra time we have had together. As the temperatures start to warm up, and I dream about our next home renovation project of updating our outdoor living space, I know what truly matters is the atmosphere in our home and the love we give and receive. LOCAL HGTV STAR SHARES HER SECRETS TO MAKE A HOME LOOK BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND LIVABLE

TAMARA DAY, STAR OF HGTV’S BARGAIN MANSIONS AND LOCAL DESIGNER WHO OWNS GROWING DAYS HOME IN PRAIRIE VILLAGE, DESCRIBES HER STYLE AS “LAID-BACK LUXE.” “I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara

says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.” This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says. When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most CONTINUED >

inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets. “You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says. In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast. “Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says. To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas and rugs because less expensive options will

not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family. Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted. Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences. For additional styling and design tips, watch Bargain Mansions, consult with Tamara through her Growing Days Design and Growing Days E-Design services (GrowingDays.com; 913-335-1016) or visit her Growing Days Home retail store and showroom in Prairie Village. MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?

HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS: + Find a base color with pops of other colors. “Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.” If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room. + Consider wallpaper. “Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says. Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs. + Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.

I ask questions to dig deeper into what they want, such as privacy while enjoying their view. Hunter Douglas Silhouettes or Graber Sheer shades would be a great fit for them. If they want to have a totally unobstructed view, roller shades are a great option. If they want to soften up the room or need to add texture, Softstyle Romans or Natural Woven Romans are a great choice. We can use their chosen fabric or they can pick from our selection. Alta Dual shades provide a modern vibe, and shutters are ideal for classic homes. Do they have an outdoor space they are only able to use a third of the year? We have patio shades that provide shade in the summer, hold heat in the winter, and keep bugs out as well.” He says he has noticed customers want as much light in their homes as possible during the day, while wanting privacy at night. Roller shades fit this to a T. J Geiger has developed a product for this, which when rolled up is compact and sleek, while rolled down provides privacy and protection from heat. All wires and motors are hidden inside the roller shade. How does, “Alexa, raise my shades” sound? “Home automation is something we are seeing integrated into new builds. It’s easier to set up shades that never have to be recharged, but many of our products integrate with Alexa, Google Home and more without needing wires,” he says. “This allows you to control your shades with voice or phone anywhere in the world. If you suddenly think about your home while sipping your favorite drink on the beach, you can check to see if your shades are up or down. Pretty nice!” Both emphasize that as a small family-owned business, they are dedicated to a perfect product and happiness for clients. “We are blessed to provide top-quality products to people who need them. LOCAL MOM PURSUES DREAM AND OPENS HOME GOODS STORE WHEN AMANDA WATTERS BEGAN BLOGGING A DECADE AGO WITH RECIPES AND DÉCOR AND CRAFTING IDEAS, SHE HAD NO IDEA IT WOULD LEAD HER TO START HER OWN BUSINESS THAT IS NOW KNOWN AS HOMESONG MARKET. “Over the years of writing, I started getting this itch to have a shop of my own—a home goods store,” she says. Watters knew she wanted to focus on beauty, simplicity and sustainability, but she didn’t know where that was going to lead. After getting some inspiration from a trip to Paris, she opened her online store in November 2019. 24

Leawood Lifestyle | March 2021

She started working out of her home with about 10 vendors, and it grew from there. When she could no longer contain everything in her home, she searched for a physical location and found a place in Brookside. The store opened in the middle of 2020 shortly after the end of the stay-athome orders, and Watters says it gives an ambiance that evokes a calming sense of home. “I can’t imagine opening a store anywhere else,” she says. “Despite all the craziness this year, there has been a lot of amazing blessings as well because of the neighborhood we are in.” Watters says her goal is for all her products to embody those ideas of beauty, sustainability, and simplicity.

MAKING LIFE SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL AND SUSTAINABLE (CONTINUED)

Many of the products she sells are made from wood or natural materials, and she says she is also drawn to natural fibers, raw wood products and linens, all of which are in line with simplicity and sustainability. Additionally, she focuses on sustainability by working with various farms, avoiding plastics, and not sourcing materials from China. She has found sourcing of the products and finding the right vendors is critical. “It’s about finding a company that shares the same philosophy that we do,” she says. Watters says focusing on beauty in the home is particularly important now given that our homes have become our primary domains during the past year. “Our homes are where we spend the majority of our lives, especially now,” she says. “To be in a space that makes you feel uplifted, inspired and good is important.”

26

Leawood Lifestyle | March 2021

As many of her product offerings are seasonal, Watters says she is always looking at how she can best celebrate each season with products. Some of her most popular offerings are handwoven baskets, French soaps, cleaning tools and candles. Beeswax is found throughout the store as well. Both the online and physical store are broken down by rooms that include cleaning, laundry, children’s products, kitchen and dining, gardening and outdoor living, organization, crafting, and bath. Watters and her team also have a full year of workshops planned for customers that they plan to hold when it is safe to host such events again. The topics include broom making, candle making, cleaning solutions, beauty products, potholders and more. These workshops will give customers the opportunity to work with local artisans and hear from their expertise. She hopes to keep a small-town feel to the business and adds that they even put love into their shipping with sustainable wrapping and writing notes to customers. Overall, Watters says the level of intention they put into everything makes the business unique.

Leawood Lifestyle | March 2021

THE INN AT MEADOWBROOK The Inn at Meadowbrook’s unique setting in an 80-acre park – alongside tiered lakes – offers the opportunity to step into serenity. Located at the heart of Meadowbrook Park – in Prairie Village – you can mingle around the Inn’s firepit and lawns to enjoy outdoor calm. Inside, the Inn’s spacious rooms boast purposeful design such as banquette window seating, leather-bound reading chairs, custom bunk beds, expansive walk-in showers, and pillow-top mattresses. Well-appointed suites and connecting rooms allow six to eight guests – perfect for a girl’s weekend, or wedding party. The surrounding area is perfect for an active lifestyle (at your pace). Bike rides around paved trails, picnics on Meadowbrook hill, a morning walk around the lakes, evening yoga in the park, pickleball courts, and fishing are just a few of the recreational finds. The Inn also boasts world-class dining at Verbena, an American Restaurant, offering dishes such as a Kennebunkport Lobster roll and a Prime KC steak. The Market – a corner hotspot – curates local finds and dishes out made-fromscratch pastries, sandwiches, soups, and charcuterie boards. Exceptional surroundings, 5-star service, and higher standards for cleanliness and care, The Inn at Meadowbrook is a local haven for a special getaway, the affluent business traveler, or treating out-of-town guests to a one-of-a-kind respite. innatmeadowbrook.com
