BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

Open your heart, and appetite, to the kindness and deliciousness of Homegrown Kansas City ARTICLE JUDY GOPPERT PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

THE FIRST HOMEGROWN OPENED IN WICHITA IN 2017, AND THEY NOW HAVE THREE LOCATIONS IN WICHITA. They opened their Brookside location on August 9, 2021. “We are a completely scratch kitchen. We want to serve fresh, made-from-scratch meals at a reasonable price,” Mark Androes, Market Manager, says. “We serve local pasture-raised eggs, KC’s Scavusso’s meats, Farm to Market Breads, Shatto Dairy products, Tom’s Town Distilling, Messenger Coffee…the list of local partners goes on and on! It is important for us to serve local and reinvest in the community.” He has found that Brookside is truly a special place. The community is strong, and they hope to be a part of the neighborhood for a long time. He says they already have so many regulars that have made them part of their weekly or daily routine. “I do not minimize what a privilege it is to serve and create relationships with our neighbors,” he smiles. “I love seeing young families walking over on Saturday and Sunday mornings, parking strollers, catching up with friends and celebrating special events with us. It really is an honor.”

The menu offers many favorites to all who eat at their tables. How about homemade coffeecake with buttermilk caramel sauce? Or homemade pop tarts, biscuits and gravy, avocado toast, pancakes and the BLTAE. Mark’s personal favorite is the Salsa Verde Park & Egg and whatever is on the seasonal menu. The bar makes an amazing mimosa with fresh squeezed orange juice. He also personally loves the Beermosa made with KC Bier Co Hefeweizen. “I am really proud of the culture we build at Homegrown. You’ll see a sign on our wall that says, ‘Cultivate Kindness.’ I hate to say that’s a motto because it is so much more,” he continues. “We focus on treating each other, our guests, and partners with genuine kindness. In our world, we are often someone’s first experience of the day. We hope to serve them and treat them with true kindness that they can then spread that kindness into the community the rest of the day. Again, what a privilege.” They are hoping to continue to grow in the Kansas City area and are always scouting out more locations. Visit their new Brookside location for a bloody good brunch! HomeGrown Kitchen is located at 63rd and Wornall. They are open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Visit homegrownkitchen.com for more information.

IT’S ABOUT H O W W E WA N T E D TO LIVE SOME SAY IT’S A TREE HOUSE. OTHERS CALL IT AN ART GALLERY. TO SHERI STAMPER AND RON BERG, THE FEEL OF THEIR HOME IS THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF ART AND NATURE. Sheri, a VP at Siemens, and Ron, a commercial photographer/director, first started looking in Loch Lloyd in 2017 with a plan to build. After spending more time in the community, they began looking for a home on the lake. “When we first walked in, the views of the lake, the high ceilings, and the walls of windows had us,” says Sheri.

Our lifestyle is busy with work and friends, so I think having nature as a backdrop in our lives helps keep things in perspective.” Having amassed a large art collection over the years, the couple feature work by local artists throughout their home, including Tom Corbin, Peregrine Honig, Jeff Robinson and others. Together they must save the town from her break-up curse, but will working together cause love to brew once again? CONTEMPORARY FICTION

THE WAY WE WEREN’T by Phoebe Fox (on sale November 9) Marcie Malone has a loving husband, a wonderful job and happy life in Georgia. Herman Flint is a self-reliant man who seemingly appreciates his solitude on beach in Florida. When Marcie suffers an unimaginable loss, she finds herself alone and on a stranger’s couch. Herman reluctantly lets Marcie into his house, but there’s not a chance he’s going to let this mess into his life. When they start to pick away at one another, this unlikely pair begins to open up to someone new while starting to look within themselves. THE WAY WE WEREN’T is a story of finding yourself, picking up after your mistakes and learning to live again. I loved how imperfect the characters were but also how much you wanted to root for their happiness. Heartwarming and emotional, this book will give you all the feels.

MYSTERY FICTION

RAZORBLADE TEARS by S.A. Cosby Ike is an ex-con who’s been living the straight and narrow for 15 years. He’s got a pretty good life even though he’s mostly estranged from his son Isiah, son-in-law Derek, and their daughter. Buddy Lee, Derek’s father, is a criminal who doesn’t shy away from conflict. When Buddy and Ike’s sons are murdered, leaving their shared granddaughter an orphan, they find they have more in common than their regret over their strained relationships with their sons. As they hatch a plan to find and bring their sons’ killers to justice, they embark on a high-octane adventure that challenges them both physically and emotionally. If you love action movies, this book is for you! RAZORBLADE TEARS is filled with so many tense, heart pounding scenes that it’s both a page turner and a tear jerker.

NOT HERE TO BE LIKED by Michelle Quach Eliza Quan is the most qualified candidate on the ballot to run her school paper and the only candidate running. That is, until rookie writer and former baseball star, Len DiMartile, enters the race, and the election turns into a popularity contest. Filled with anger she pens a private essay that becomes a public feminist movement when someone publishes her essay for the entire school to read. Now she and Len have to work together on the paper, and they both start to realize their rival is more complex than it seems. NOT HERE TO BE LIKED is a great story that balances humorous and serious topics in a fantastic manner. Eliza isn’t your normal female teen heroine, but that’s part of what makes this book so clever.

NON-FICTION

THE LAST NOMAD: COMING OF AGE IN THE SOMALI DESERT by Shugri Said Salh Shugri Said Salh is the last nomad in her family’s long history of nomadic life. As the “throw away” daughter in her family, she was sent to live with her nomadic grandmother at the age of 6. Living and surviving in the desert taught Shugri about tradition, survival, being resourceful and instilled a sense of confidence she relies on for the rest of her upbringing. When she’s brought back to life in the city with her family, Shugri often struggles with finding her identity as city life is a drastic contrast to her nomadic past. Never forgetting the lessons she learned, we’re taken on a journey through her life as she travels within Somalia and beyond. This telling memoir is an extremely inspiring story. THE LAST NOMAD will give you insight into a world quite possibly very unlike your own which is such a generous gift from the author.

CRIME FICTION

CHASING THE BOOGEYMAN by Richard Chizmar In the 1980s a serial killer is on the loose in Maryland. When recent college grad and horror enthusiast, Richard Chizmar, returns to spend the summer at his parents’ house, he starts to closely follow what’s happening in his town. Chizmar quickly becomes more involved as he begins to investigate and write about “The Boogeyman.” As time passes and more victims are found, Richard falls deeper into this story. This is a fabulous work of fiction that I kept having to remind myself was in fact not a true crime novel. Chizmar takes experiences and places from his childhood and weaves them throughout the book making the story seem eerily real.

J E T F U E L THE JET FUEL IS A COCKTAIL THAT TAKES A VERY LONG TIME TO COMPLETE. It is one of my Clairified Cocktails. Essentially a variation of a Clarified Milk Punch which dates all the way back to late 1600’s with the first recorded recipe being documented in 1711. The process was a way of using milk, alcohol, and citrus to make beverages with an extended shelf life. During the height of it’s popularity Queen Victoria had appointed the company of

The Jet Fuel is one of those drinks that plays with a customers mind, it looks like water which in some cases makes people think there will be no flavor, but as you sip it explodes with a the flavor of what is essentially a traditional Aviation cock-tail with a very smooth and almost silky mouth feel. It’s a long process to get the final product, but it is well worth the wait.

A friend stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself, and the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.” He knew his bad eating habits weren’t good for mind, body or spirit, but he didn’t know where to begin to make changes. However, Prescott thought to himself, “I KNOW good food because I have literally traveled all over America, all over Canada, and into Europe with my music, eating great food and learning what I like.”

Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment. “I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment. I didn’t realize that you can create these beautiful experiential moments at the table in the same way that I did playing someone’s favorite love song. Knowing that that was a thing to me was the most fascinating thing in the world.” Dennis even got to the point where he was cooking so much that he started to forget what recipes he had successfully made, so he began a photo journal and started taking photos of all his completed dishes. And so it began like it does for most; Dennis began posting food photos to Instagram for the next few years. “All of that was initially with no agenda, no intentionality; I just loved it and I wanted to share. I fell in love with feeding people.” Regarding social media, Dennis’s professional advice is to check

“Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’ Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
