Letter from the Editor DECEMBER IS (FINALLY) HERE, AND THE PEACE, BEAUTY AND TRADITIONS THAT THIS SEASON BRINGS COULD NOT BE MORE WELCOMED. As my family and I spent last week decorating our home for the holidays, all of the warm feelings and memories that I hold dear from Christmas’s past come rushing to my mind. This is always my favorite time of year, and I love watching my kids

things that come to mind: driving around looking at lights, decorating sugar cookies while listening to Bing Crosby, throwing handfuls of tinsel on the tree and adorning it with stringed popcorn, and the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning. With being one of ten children, opening presents was a bit of a free-for-all at my home, but there was always a moment of calm before the storm to first sing happy birthday to Jesus and then to open our stockings one at a time in an orderly fashion. Among our stocking goodies, there was always a guarantee that an orange would be at the bottom of the sock and a candy cane hanging on the outside. I don’t think any of us ever ate the orange, but regardless, it was always there. Our holidays were never extravagant, and I’m sure they were a little crazy for my parents, but the love and magic are the feelings that remain.

2. Using a sharp knife, thinly slice citrus and arrange on a cookie sheet. 3. Bake until slices are mostly dried (3-4 hours), occasionally flipping for an even bake. *Slices are done when the rinds are hard and dry, but the centers are still tacky. The slices will continue to dry out after being removed from the oven so “under done” is OK!

HOW TO USE DRIE D CITRUS: 1. For gift wrapping, pair your dried citrus with real or faux greens and attach with cotton ribbon or twine to garnish your gifts. 2. For tablescapes, add dried citrus to gift tags and use as personalized place settings. 3. For home decor, use ribbon or twine to hang dried citrus as ornaments or string several together to use as garland. 4. For desserts and charcuterie boards, garnish with dried or candied citrus. 5. For gifts, make stovetop potpourri to fill your home with wonderful holiday smells

DIY ICE BUCKET: An ice bucket made out of, well, ice! This is a show-stopper that costs nothing but a little time using
items that you probably already have. Surprisingly, this ice bucket will last for hours once placed out for use and after you’re done, put it back in the freezer (adding a bit more water) for another time. I typically use one ice bucket the whole holiday season with a last hurrah on New Year’s Eve. 1. Large container 2. Small container (just a bit bigger than the diameter of a bottle) 3. Small rocks (enough to fill your small container) 4. Filler of your choice (pine clippings, cranberries, flowers, sliced fruit, or even things like beads or glitter!). In this ice bucket I used clippings from our boxwoods and fresh cranberries. Full video instructions are located at @silvertoothfarmhome highlight titled “ice bucket.” Tag me with your own ice bucket creations—I can’t wait to see! 18

“Interestingly, when times are difficult, some families purchase gemstone-based jewelry as a way of acquiring assets that have excellent historical ‘store-in-value,’ to be passed on to children and grandchildren,” Tivol adds. “This is true throughout the world and has been repeated many times in my own history in the business.” With clients in 36 states, Tivol says most of his business still remains local. Clients value his knowledge of gemstones, including diamonds, colored gemstones and pearls. “My desire to teach each client about the huge field of gemstones and how to shop and value them remains the primary product that attracts the public to my store, along with my appraisal and repair services,” he says. From his early days of apprenticeship, Tivol has been amassing knowledge about jewelry engineering and design, especially designing new jewelry from old stones and metals “just sitting in drawers gathering shadows.” Along with the pieces he designed and crafted himself, Tom Tivol Jewelry carries inventory by exciting and emerging designers in the U.S. and Europe. Tivol is ready to launch his new website, a three-year project, that will allow purchases from $50-$500. “For everything else, we need to talk,” he says, but he adds that customers don’t need $10,000 to walk into his store: “I have great respect for anyone who wishes to learn more.” Tivol says he hopes one day his son, Jake, will join him in the business, but he has no plans to retire anytime soon. “When I turn 98, I’ll hold a board meeting whether I should retire. Since I may be the only employee, it will be the shortest board meeting I’ve ever attended.” Visit: www.tomtivoljewels.com to learn more about: + Diamonds, colored gemstones, pearls + Wedding jewelry, often designed by Tom Tivol + Special-occasion jewelry + Appraisals/documents for sales, insurance, inheritance, auctions + Jewelry repair and restyling + Timepiece restoration + Bead/pearl restringing + Lab services + Resale of pre-worn jewelry + Speaking engagements

Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.

Making Memories on the Ice
LEAWOOD'S ICE AT PARK PLACE All photos were taken from previous years on the ice.
THE ICE AT PARK PLACE, LEAWOOD’S OUTDOOR ICE RINK, IS OPEN THROUGH FEBRUARY 28, 2021! This season brings holiday festivities, as well as some new traditions. Think small town pond hockey, human curling, (who wants to push Uncle Butch down the ice?), broom ball, and a special Miracle on Ice 40th Anniversary Event featuring Ken Morrow. The Ice will continue to host its ever-so-popular Princess and Sweetheart Skates but is also adding something special for our Superheroes too—recognizing both the famous, and not so famous, heroes to include our front-line workers who have given so much to keep our community safe. Make a date with the family (all season long) to visit The Ice at Park Place for a magical, safe outdoor winter. The Ice at Park Place follows Johnson County government orders for outdoor events/gatherings. Entry may require a reservation to comply with capacity limits, and social distancing and protective face coverings are required.
