Greetings all countryside vineyard lovers, art/history seekers, and adventurers! We have always wanted to explore the Provence region of France and would LOVE to have you join us! We’ve cruised on both the Rhine and the Danube, but nothing sounds as amazing to me as cruising down the Rhone. Bicycling through lavender fields and sipping wine from locally grown vineyards! Whether you are experienced or new to river cruising, this would be a great opportunity, and we’d love to have you join us in the fun!
There’s a new destination on the Danube—the extraordinary AmaMagna. An evolution of AmaWaterways’ already exceptional fleet of river cruise ships, AmaMagna embodies the invariable world-class service, 5-star dining, high-quality amenities and authentic experiences our past guests hold dear— but now there’s even more to love. At almost twice the width of traditional European river cruise ships, AmaMagna invites you to luxuriate within both sprawling spaces and intimate pockets that offer moments of repose so invigorating you may never want to leave! often a lot of laughs about what I thought looked great. I grew up predominantly in the ‘80s and ‘90s where fashion trends were both distinct and diverse. Big hair, perms, blue eye shadow, shoulder pads, leg warmers, parachute pants, jelly shoes, stone washed tight rolled jeans and Aqua Net dominated the ‘80s, while overalls, Birkenstocks, Doc Martens, plaids, and textures such as corduroy, velour, and velvet distinguished the ‘90s looks. Each decade had its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected often times is connected to the culture and music of the day. One of my favorite memories tied to clothing was when my Aunt Barbara came in town from Georgia and took me to the Laura Ashley store on the Plaza to buy my confirmation dress. Being one of 10 children, we didn’t frequent expensive stores, so it was extra special when we got something nice. She let me pick out any dress I wanted and had no stipulations. The price didn’t matter and neither did the style. That blue floral dress in all

That memory with my sweet aunt was something that I have always treasured. As common as a shopping trip for our kids can be now, back then it was not (at least for me), and I felt so special to have that one-on-one time with my aunt on the Plaza shopping for such a special occasion. In this month’s issue, I wanted to share with you some local entrepreneurs in the Kansas City fashion and garment scene, and as you will discover in the following pages, Kansas City is becoming more of a hub for garment production and manufacturing. MEET THE STYLIST:
AMANI S KA L A C K I AMANI SKALACKI IS THE LOCAL STYLIST AND ARTIST TAKING OVER THE FASHION SCENE IN KANSAS CITY AND BEYOND. She turned her interest in fashion and knowledge of accessories into a successful career in fashion, editorial and advertising in local and national magazines and advertising campaigns. Her portfolio includes jewelry and accessories design, wardrobe, prop and set styling, as well as fashion editorial writing. After receiving her degree in Art History and Fine Arts from Kansas State University, she worked for various ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN
art organizations before fully devoting herself to her artwork. “I have worked in the corporate world for more years than I can count. I worked for the Chicago Art Institute, Kansas City Art Institute, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and Hallmark. I have always made artwork, but it wasn't until I found myself burned out on corporate America that I took the plunge into making art full time. I was selected to show my work at the West 18th Street Fashion Show, Triple Crown Summer in 2012. Kelly Kuhn, owner of Blue Gallery, was in the audience and was impressed by my work. my work for a shoot—I showed up on set and was asked to style the shoot. I stylists in Los Angeles and Chicago and eventually became a full-time stylist. Since then, my work has been featured in magazines in all three cities. Because of my art background, I have a strong understanding of a variety of materials. My styling work is not specific to one area. I’ve been lucky to work with clients ranging from luxury to commercial markets with shoestring budgets. I love a challenge! I can make just about anything with a limited amount of materials. It’s all about understanding the basics of design and construction.” Skalacki believes that fashion should be accessible to everyone, which is why she styles for every body type and budget.

“I am known for pairing high-end pieces with thrift store finds. I love the high-low contrast. It’s finding beauty in the misfits, or the discarded objects that are just waiting to be transformed into treasures. Fashion should not only be accessible based on cost, but it should also be accessible to women of all shapes and sizes. I love working with clients and models with curves. It's real life. There are more women that are a size 10 than a size 2. I think it's important to show a variety of shapes and sizes in my editorial and commercial work. I also believe models don't need to be 18 to thrive in the editorial or commercial market. I am seeing more of a shift in the fashion world to include a variety of sizes as well as ages. I love that!” Skalacki’s most recent work is her Hardware Collection. She’s created jewelry from recycled plumbers chain that’s woven with gold-plated wire crystals and vintage glass beads. It’s inspired by her grandparents’ migration to the United States on the S.S. United States ocean liner in the 1950’s and is a tribute to their courage to fulfill their dreams in America. Skalacki says they were master tradespeople—her grandfather was a master tool dye maker and her grandmother was a dressmaker, and both concealed the few family treasures they had in the seams of dress linings and hidden pockets. Those treasures are now revealed and exaggerated for all to see, blurring the lines between structure and embellishment. “The show is inspired by the pieces I created for the West 18th Street Fashion Show, Summer Migration. The collection was originally created based on my grandparents’ migration to the United States from London. The collection was a snapshot of the larger collection I am creating for Blue Gallery. I will be working with the same materials and will also be adding semi-precious stones. I’m creating a series of larger pieces including corsets, breastplates and statement necklaces, which will be displayed in a way that they can be viewed as stand-alone pieces of art or jewelry that can be worn.” Skalacki is currently working on an art show at Blue Gallery that will open later this year. For more information, visit BlueGalleryOnline.com. To view Skalacki’s styling work, visit SkalaDesigns.com.

S H E L LY &
girl can be a mother's dream (or nightmare), and what used to be all frills and lace has now turned into a variety of options for mothers today. The styles are endless, and even infant outfits are trendy and versatile. Our mothers are often our first “stylists” responsible for our first fashion statements in our early youth. However, often the tables turn as daughters grow up and get their own sense of style becoming a great resource to their moms of what to wear and what definitely not to wear. Not only do they discover what they truly love to wear, but sometimes daughters begin to help their mothers stay on trend and can help with a closet overhaul. Throughout the many seasons of life, dressing and shopping with our moms and daughters have probably been a mix of fun, frustration and memory-making. These local mothers and daughters share how fashion has morphed throughout their lives.
M O M — S H E L LY D A U G H T E R — B R I T TA N Y From the time Brittany was little, she has always thought of her mom, Shelly, as someone who was into fashion and shopping. Shelly taught her daughter that if you find something that makes you feel good and confident, you should rock the look. Brittany completely agrees and tries to carry that into her everyday life. This mother and daughter combo believes it is more than just fashion -- it’s about being confident and feeling good about who you are. “There was a time when I was really into white lipstick and glitter eye shadow. Needless to say, it was not a good look, but my mom supported me anyway. Then again, there have been a few times where she buys children's shoes because she can fit in them seeing as she has such little feet,” Brittany explains. A special memory between these two was the annual shopping outing for Brittany’s first day of school outfit. They even have continued this tradition as adults before their first day at a new job. Although their tastes vary, they both love clothes that are comfortable and that can be an everyday outfit but can still be dressed up with fun jewelry or a good shoe. “Regardless of our different taste in style, we always find good things we know the other will like and love giving each other gifts,” Shelly says.

MOM — JOANN DAUGHTER — NICOLE JoAnn and Nicole rarely shop together and have vastly different styles; in fact, they may be opposites. Nicole likes high heels and showing her arms and legs, and JoAnn likes over the knee dresses, three-quarter sleeve tops and a good comfy flat. However, Nicole has come to realize that she has adopted some of her mother’s fashion habits as her own. Nicole explains, “My mom keeps a lot of her clothes for awhile, and I just realized that I do the same thing. Some pieces never go out of style and some will go away and then come back. You never know, so I learned the art of taking care of my clothes and hanging on to them from her.” Instead of shopping trips, this duo grew up catalog shopping. “We would receive those massive JCPenney catalogs in the mail, and I would get so excited when they arrived so that I could pick out what I liked,” Nicole remembers. “Several years ago I called a favorite clothing store of mine to see if they had some sort of catalog to send to me as a visual, and the younger-than-me woman was so confused as to what I was talking about. Old habits never die! Needless to say, they didn't have one. I will say though, there is something about seeing someone else wearing a great outfit that encourages you to really love and pursue it.” JoAnn says she recently needed to borrow a dress from Nicole’s closet and discovered that Nicole really enjoyed picking something out for her. “Maybe it's a start to something.”

Lisa and Lauren both have a shared love of fashion and appreciate each other’s style choices. Their styles are definitely different, but they almost always love what the other is wearing. It's the first thing they mention when they see each other and like to call it "the compliment parade.” “My mom has always had great style, and I always loved watching her get all dressed up when I was a kid. I couldn't wait to wear her high heels,” exclaims Lauren. Lisa loves to share her finds with her daughter and is always looking for her approval on her wardrobe selections. “I appreciate that she will be brutally honest with her feedback. We love hitting the sales, and having my personal shopper along with me ensures a successful return on the investment,” Lisa explains. Their shared love of a good bargain makes for fun after-shopping gloating, all in good fun of course. “We love to play the "guess how much I spent?” game to show off who got the better deal,” Lauren says. One of Lauren’s favorite shopping memories was when her mom got her out of school early to go shopping for her eighth grade dance dress because it made her feel so special to have that time with her mom. “Shopping for the wedding dress has to be my favorite memory,” says Lisa. “Shopping for prom and homecoming brings back stressful memories. Oh, the drama!”

LO C A L D E N I M M A N U FACT U R E R B E L I E V E S KANSAS CITY IS POISED FOR R E V I VA L O F O N C E -T H R I V I N G GARMENT INDUSTRY
THE BUSTLE OF WORKERS AND HUM OF SEWING MACHINES HAVE LONG SINCE LEFT THE OLD KANSAS CITY GARMENT DISTRICT. At one time, however, garment manufacturing was the city's No. 2 industry, employing more than 4,000 people. An estimated one in seven American women wore a garment that was manufactured in Kansas City. "We don't always appreciate the history we have here in Kansas City," says Kerry Duffin, owner of The Garment Factory in the West Bottoms and the Lucy Marie and Herman product lines. "Up until the early 1990s, we were second only to New York City in garment production. It fell off a cliff with NAFTA and China trade opening up." However, Duffin believes the industry is poised for a revival that could create thousands of jobs and put the city on the national map for apparel. "Kansas City has a huge opportunity to capture the Made in the USA apparel industry," he says. "Much of the manufacturing is done in Los Angeles, which is perceived as fake, but we are perceived as authentic. Kansas City has a heck of an opportunity to wake up and grasp. The growth can be exponential, because bringing in one business can attract 10 more." Duffin has put his money where his mouth is. The Kansas City native, who started out working in the music industry, had a brainstorm while visiting the South Beach area of Miami. He noticed women wearing a style of jeans that were designed to flatter their figures. Market research convinced him that proper fit is a top priority for women purchasing denim. As a result he launched the Lucy Marie line for women and later the Herman line for men (both named after his parents) in 2013 (www.lucyandherman.com).Two years later, he opened the Garment Factory to provide contract manufacturing.

HOUNDSTOOTH
LOCALLY OWNED
Q&A WITH JEFF COVITZ PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW HOUNDSTOOTH GOT ITS START. I am a third generation tailor. My grandfather owned a tailor shop in Brookside, and my father's shop was located in Overland Park. While running my father's business, I always would keep an eye on downtown real estate for what I thought was the perfect spot to open my own idea of a men’s store. Things fell into place when I stumbled upon our current location. Just steps from the largest farmers market in the midwest and growing community of young professionals and budding small businesses, the neighborhood really directs our business trajectory. As it grows, so do we. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN DESIGN AND TAILORING THAT YOU HOLD AS A STANDARD FOR YOUR BRAND? The entire clothing industry has spent the last 70 or so years attempting to lower the labor required to produce a suit. In my estimation, many brands have lost the "tailored" designation. To me "tailored" refers to the manufacturing of a garment that is intended to be tailored (i.e. pulled apart and put back together). Many suits are not made in this manner any more, often using glue instead of thread to hold things together. In our suits you will find no glue in the chest of the jackets. It is a sewn garment, and thus is softer, drapes better, and withstands dry cleanings better. Our custom suiting is always a handmade garment with soft natural shoulders. We take measurements and control almost every design element. With more than 900 fabrics to choose from, we really do feel we can create just about anything. Creating one-of-a-kind pieces is a really fun diversion that breaks up the monotony of long retail hours, and it’s been where we've seen the most growth over the past two years.

A COMMON QUESTION ASKED WHEN

"Often when we have a disaster in the world, people move all issues regarding race, gender, and political stance aside and turn into one human race to save, rescue, and help people. At Connected World, we aim to highlight that same energy and create a lens on unity from a humanitarian perspective as a force of light to drive out darkness. One of the things they aim to do is to work with different artists and use their brand to “culture travel.” Through culture travel they highlight the similarities of humans as a basis for love because they feel when you concentrate on differences it gives an opportunity for fear or hate. "It is our belief that dividing segments of mankind is a catalyst for separation," Earl explains. "Connected World feels we as people have way more similarities than differences. We work to highlight our similarities and increase love through fashion. The human race struggles with being an individual while being part of the collective, and we are committed to being part of this movement to encourage being uniquely inspirational." Earl has been involved with garment design for more than 12 years. While he got his start in denim jeans, currently he is making vinyl, canvas, and leather bags and t-shirts.
