Some of my favorite childhood memories involve spending summer weekends with cousins. Sometimes it was a simple sleepover where we would spend the majority of our time coming up with performances of all kinds to present to anyone willing to watch, and other times it was a weekend spent at our family lake cabin (which "cabin" is a generous word to use). Our lake weekends were filled with rafting and swimming, playing volleyball and croquet, going on walks or driving into town for ice cream, and sitting around a campfire at night, telling stories or sharing embarrassing moments. Those lake weekend memories are among my most favorite life moments. Still to this day, when I see my cousins, we sometimes reminisce about those cherished memories that we made during the summers of our childhood. I am so thankful for those

LOSING A PIECE OF LUGGAGE IS A NUISANCE FOR MOST PEOPLE. For Martin "Murph" Murphy of Leawood, it triggered a sequence of events that landed him in some of the fiercest battles of World War II. "I did Marine boot camp in San Diego," says Martin, now 93. "After we graduated, trucks pulled up with all of our sea bags piled in front. My sea bag happened to be at the bottom of the pile, and I had a heck of a time finding it. Everybody else was on the trucks before I finally got on the last truck. "Somebody came out of the hut and yelled, 'get that last truck!' They needed somebody for tank school, which is how I got into tanks. Lucky break number one." Martin trained in A-4 Sherman tanks at Camp Pendleton in California. These 38-ton tanks carried 75-millimeter guns and a crew of five. He was designated a loader because he was tall and could reach the shells stored beneath the floor of the turret. His crew sailed for Hawaii and didn't learn their ultimate destination until they were at sea. "Everybody was guessing where we were going, but of course, nobody knew," Martin says. "Then we found out it was going to be Iwo Jima." The battle, fought from Feb. 19 to March 26, 1945, resulted in 7,800 U.S. soldiers killed and more than 20,000 wounded or evacuated. The first hurdle for Martin's tank was simply getting off the landing craft and onto the beach. "We hit the beach, and when they dropped the door in the front, the lieutenant went to the left about 100 feet and bogged down," he says. "Then the sergeant went to the right, full speed ahead, and he bogged down at about the same distance. Then Taylor, an old truck driver from Minnesota, said, 'Miller, put this in the lowest gear you have. What do you say,Â guys, should we go straight out?'

THEIR GORGEOUS HOME EIGHT YEARS AGO, THEY KNEW THEY WANTED TO CREATE A BACKYARD SPACE THAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL BACKDROP TO CREATE FAMILY MEMORIES FOR YEARS

TO COME. With a very large extended family and two teenaged daughters, they wanted a space that was welcoming and enjoyable to host get-togethers for friends and family.

The inspiration for the space came from their previous home that had a cozy backyard living area with a

fireplace in which they spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoors, even in the winter.

“We would build a fire in the fireplace and watch

the kids sled down the hill in the backyard, entertain friends and watch TV outside. Our daughters were in

middle school when we moved to this home, and we knew we wanted to be the gathering place for them to enjoy with their friends.”

They wanted a beautiful outdoor living area that was an extension of the indoors, so they enlisted the help of Blue Haven Pools for the overall design of the space. Krueger Landscaping planted the larger landscaping, and Outside Interiors did a great job of softening the space with smaller plantings and pots around the pool. They have a lot of favorite places in the yard. The living space under the pergola is a family favorite. It is a gathering place for entertaining family and friends, watching a baseball game on TV or sneaking in an afternoon nap on the weekends.

A father of five and husband of Overland Park police officer Betsy Selman, John is a program specialist/employment development for Region 7 for FEMA, spending his time training and teaching government employees. However, it wasn’t long ago that John found himself outside of the comforts of Johnson County and in some of the most dangerous situations in the deserts of Iraq and Kuwait as a member of the U.S. Army. John spent three deployments in the Iraq and Kuwait during his 20 years of Army service. It was a journey both on and off the battlefield furthering his education and life experiences. The son of a farmer and former Marine, John participated in the ROTC program and joined the Army immediately after graduating from West George College where he earned a secondary education degree. “Twelve minutes after I crossed the stage, I was on active duty,” he says. John grew up attending a small Southern Baptist church; that experience influenced his decision to join the Army. “All the men had served in the military, and they used to go outside and talk about farming and their military days,” John says. “They would all lament about how if they stayed in they would have had a pension, and that was appealing. My dad was a farmer, went through bankruptcy, lost the house and the farm, so something resonated with me.” John went off to basic training at Fort Knox. “I thought it was a ton of fun—I liked the obstacle courses, shooting guns and the camaraderie, and I went through airborne school jumping out of airplanes,” he says. Among his Army duties was serving as a tank platoon leader.

He eventually deployed as a strategic planner with the 4th brigade combat team to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009, later returning once again to nearby Fort Leavenworth. John had one more overseas “adventure,” visiting Afghanistan to teach strategic planning to the Afghani National Security Council. He was also temporarily assigned to the Pentagon and served as the strategic planner for the National Task Force on Behavioral Health. With each deployment, John endured numerous rocket attacks, “but the closest I got to getting killed was walking across a parking lot across the green zone to buy a candy bar when a rocket hit and fortunately all the parked cars absorbed the blow…. I never did get the candy bar,” he says with a chuckle. John decided to retire in 2013 to move on. “I’m glad I did it, and I am glad I am done with it,” he says. “It taught me if I put my head down I could do anything”. FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest

WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (theyâ€™ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4.
