discovering my heritage and what my ancestors and family before me accomplished or sacrificed, and the legacy they passed down. I have been fortunate enough to have many strong female role models, including my incredible mother, but I wanted to honor a woman who had such a lasting impact on me throughout my entire life, my grandmother, Jean Newman. We called her Mama Jean. She lived to be 91, and, up to the end of her life, she was a thoughtful, vibrant, classy and incredibly smart woman. Even as a young child, I knew there was something about her that I wanted to absorb. Always up for a party or a social gathering, she brought the class. Everything about her impressed me. The way she dressed, decorated her home, her gourmet cooking and even the way she wrapped a present was a work of art. She knew how to make every little detail special. Mama Jean made getting old look fun, and she acted and looked like she was 20 years younger than she was. My grandparents were night owls. They stayed up every night until midnight and slept in late. Fancy appetizers were a nightly occurrence to tide them over so they could enjoy a late dinner with a glass of wine on the deck. They placed a

high priority on their marriage and their time together. It was something I always took note of, and I knew in my heart that I wanted to be just like them when I grew old. Mama Jean always put others before herself, even when she was nearing the end of

her life. Instead of concentrating on any discomfort, she prayed for her caregivers and family instead. As a mother of eight, she set an example of selflessness and devotion to prayer her entire life, praying for all 90 of her family members by name every night. I learned so much from the example she set forth her entire life, and the memories I have of her I hold dear to my heart. This month, we are celebrating women in our community. The women we have the privilege

Dr. Jeffry Gerson and Dr. Emily Enright believe that quality eye care should be available to everyone who needs it. They found that many countries do not have access to quality eye care unless doctors step up to help provide that care out of compassion. Dr. Gerson has provided eye care in 3 separate mission trips to Mexico and Romania. Dr. Gerson also gives back locally by volunteering to do exams at free eye clinics in the metro. Dr. Enright has taken part in Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Dr. Enright’s first trip to Haiti in 2005 was her inspiration for becoming an Optometrist. Looking back, Bev is astounded by how quickly the time has gone and reflects on the roller coaster ride of owning their own business. Leawood has been Mayor Peggy Dunn’s home for nearly 40 years. For 20 of those years, she has had the honor of serving as mayor. She has had the opportunity to serve on numerous community boards and to be involved with many fundraising events, encompassing social service organizations, the arts, education, health care and a variety of civic institutions. Some of those near and dear to her heart include Truman Medical Centers, Children’s Mercy Hospital, St. Luke’s South, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Starlight Theatre, Union Station, United Way and the Salvation Army. She is inspired by her faith and her family—in particular, her mother, dear husband, children and 14 grandchildren along with other family members, as well as many friends and colleagues. Her advice for young women is to become involved by volunteering for causes they feel passionate about. Not only will they have the opportunity to develop good leadership skills, but they may also gain lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals. “I delight in serving the city I love and the nonprofits with which I am affiliated," she says. "I feel extremely fortunate to find joy in each day, and strive to never take my wonderful life for granted.”

Katie Fitzgerald Katie Fitzgerald has been involved with a number of organizations over the years, but has found that the ones that she enjoys working with the most are the ones involving kids. She served on the Crittenton Children’s Center Board and volunteered with the Boys & Girls Clubs and The Children’s Place, all of which focus on helping youth. Katie strives to be the best at whatever it is that she is setting out to do that day and is thankful for all of the gifts God has given her and her family. Katie looks up to her mom—Mayor Perggy Dunn—more than anyone. “She is a hard worker and expects no recognition in return for all she does for our community," she says. "She simply does things because they are the right thing to do.” Katie’s advice to other women is to be an active participant in something you are passionate about. “The more effort you put into something, the more you will get out of it!”

Janet Fournier Janet Fournier, a Realtor and miracle agent, donates a portion of each sale she makes to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The money donated locally stays in the community, and her clients are sent a card that a donation was made in their name when their transaction is complete. Janet’s passion in life is connecting women, and she has been very fortunate to develop an invaluable circle of women around her. In her experience, once you find inner happiness, you can spread that love and joy without expecting anything in return. “I challenge myself to learn something new every year," she says. "This has included earning my pilot's license, finishing my degree, learning to scuba dive, walking across hot coals and jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I encourage everyone to keep growing and trying new things.”

Rhea Pimentel Rhea Pimentel has lived in Leawood for more than 15 years with her husband, two daughters and a miniature poodle. She is a cardiologist specializing in heart rhythm problems at the University of Kansas Medical Center and is the director of the Electrophysiology Laboratory and the Fellowship Program director. In addition to caring for patients, she also serves on various hospital committees and as an educator for physicians training in cardiology. Her favorite part of her job is interacting with people and being able to offer them some help. Each person that she sees is seeking her expertise, but they are also looking for guidance, support and reassurance. It is very important to her to make a personal connection with all of her patients so that she can treat the whole person. She is inspired every day by the amazing support of her family, especially her husband who has made many sacrifices for her career while maintaining a thriving career of his own. “I strongly believe that the best way to lead is by example," she says. "If you want to teach your children an important lesson, you

Gayle Jagoda has been a dedicated volunteer at Children’s Mercy Hospital for the last 22 years. With a background in education and children’s theater, she was able to bring her previous experience and expertise to the patients and families at the hospital. She organizes crafts and games, which often can bring joy to a sick child and help them forget their infirmity for a while and immerse themselves in a project or activity. While on the hematology floor for 12 years, she got to know children with sickle cell anemia. Because these patients returned periodically until their high school graduations, which she attended. Gayle is currently serving on the surgery and burn floor where she rocks babies and encourages sick children to participate in something enjoyable. “I am fortunate to meet and work with many truly amazing families." 26

Jen Bjorem Jen Bjorem, a speech-language pathologist and owner of Children’s Therapy Services, lives every day with the goal of educating and empowering families, and dedicating time for a genuine connection to make a difference. Jen is raw, innovative, driven, compassionate and authentic and gives back to the community in a number of ways including by providing free screenings to nonprofits and supporting The Halo Project and its community outreach program, The Sensory Table. Barb Trum Barb Trum is a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and volunteer for Catholic Community Hospice ministering as an 11th-hour angel. Her role as an angel is simply to love, comfort and walk with those in their final hours. She has been graced and humbled by many end-of-life God moments. Her dog, Maisy, also is on the hospice team volunteering with pet visits. As Mother Teresa would say, “Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work.” Barb and her husband, Greg, have made several trips to India as well. “The children and elderly truly touch our souls, and we show them we are only the hands and heart of Jesus.” They live by Mother Teresa’s motto, “A drop in the ocean is better than no drop at all.”

TEA CAKE RECIPE BY RACHEL CIODAS YIELDS ONE LAYER CAKE OR 24 MINI CAKES

WITH RASPBERRIES INGREDIENTS • 1/2 pound (1 3/4 cups) whole almonds or ½ pound blanched almond flour • 6 large eggs, separated • 1 1/4 cups sugar • 2 tablespoons matcha powdered tea • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, divided into 2 parts • 2/3 cup egg whites, from 5 to 6 large eggs • 1 1/4 cups sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 pint raspberries INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-inch cake pan. 2. Grind almonds to a fine consistency (or use almond flour.) Beat egg yolks and sugar until fluffy. Add ground almonds, ½ teaspoon vanilla and salt and beat until smooth. Whip whites to soft peaks, and fold into almond mixture. Pour cake batter into pan. Bake 40 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, then remove. 3. For buttercream, put egg whites, sugar and salt into a glass bowl. Set the bowl on top of a pot of simmering—not boiling—water. Stir constantly until sugar dissolves and temperature has reached 175 degrees. Remove from heat and beat with electric mixer until stiff peaks form. On low speed, add ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, then add butter slowly cube by cube until velvety smooth. 4. To finish, cut cooled cakes with 1-inch cookie cutters, or use full-sized cake layers. Layer with Swiss meringue buttercream and top with frosting. Garnish with matcha and raspberries. CONTINUED >

Ladegaard completed the new look by darkening the cabinets, newly styled backsplash in a stunning herringbone pattern, quartz countertops that blend well with the light gray tiles, GE appliances in their new graphite finish and leather bar stools all resulting in a total reinvention of this 2005 home. “If the style of the cabinets and the layout work, you can work with what you have and still create a stunning picture,” Ladegaard says. When a Leawood couple’s grown children moved back in, they were faced with mealtime mayhem: multiple families were colliding in their existing kitchen. OUR NEWEST ELEVATE KINDNESS CHALLENGE WINNER, MIKEY’S MEALS, COMES FROM INDIAN TRAIL MIDDLE SCHOOL. Mikey’s Meals started as just a discussion between Mikey and his mom. After noticing that several kids at his school were not able to pay for a school lunch, he wanted to do something to help. He did his research and discovered that his building needed an estimated $500 a year to cover lunches for students who don’t have the funds in their account. “I knew we could find a way to give them that much money, so I started a fundraiser, and that is when Mikey’s Meals began,” he says. They raised funds for not only their school but surrounding schools in need as well. “I want all kids to have school lunch and not get embarrassed when they don’t have enough lunch money," Mikey says about why he chose this project. "Even when the school provides that student with a substitute lunch sack, people know why. With Mikey's Meals, those funds can be used to pay for that lunch so

We were impressed with how Mikey chose to use his $1,000 prize. Students can use that winning money any way they choose, and instead of keeping it, Mikey donated his winnings to the Mikey’s Meals lunch fund to help students around the city. Indian Trail principal Sarah Guerrero says she was not surprised by the outpouring of support from students in her building that came together to help raise money for this project. "Our students and families are very giving," she says. "We have a very economically diverse population at Indian Trail, and all of our families give selflessly whenever a need arises, regardless of their economic situation.
