ow that fall is upon us, the city is bustling with festivals galore, schools are back in session and hopes for a Royals postseason are high. Some of my favorite parts about this time of year besides the amazing weather include enjoying a bonfire on a crisp night, pulling out some of my sweaters, all desserts related to apples and cinnamon (who doesn’t love a good apple crisp?!) and the start of fall baseball, cross-country and soccer for my kids.

This school year brought on some big changes for our family because my oldest child started his freshman year of high school. Everyone told me that time would go fast when we were just starting our family, but I had no idea what that truly meant until now. I honestly can say it feels a bit surreal that we are already here, however we are also excited for this new season of his life. Moms of young children out there: it goes fast, so enjoy it! Our September issue is dedicated to fashion. We highlighted a few local entrepreneurs that are making a statement in the local fashion scene through their creations. Many of them sell their locally sourced products right here in KC, so check them out and see where to find their products around town. We also wanted to formally introduce you all to our newest contributor, Becky from the Cella Jane Blog. She is a local resident and blogger from right here in Johnson County but shares her fashion and style choices with hundreds of thousands of followers from all over the country. hat began with a desire to update a family room turned into an entire first-floor remodeling project. After

Arlene Ladegaarrd, owner and principal designer of Design ConnectionÂ Inc., met with the owners of this Leawood home to discuss the project, she assessed the familyâ€™s needs were not being effectively met with the current first floor plan and came up with a design to fully maximize the living room, kitchen and hearth room areas while harmoniously partnering it with eye-catching aesthetics. As a result, the family enjoys several inviting living spaces that previously were rarely used and are now the focus of family and fun. Known for her logistical prowess when designing a space, Ladegaard functionally and aesthetically solved the limited storage and seating issues as she and her team reconfigured the kitchen to include an eat-in island that comfortably seats six, allowing for additional storage and seating around the perimeter of the space. Upgraded cabinetry built to last and appliances update the look while simultaneously providing balance to the space.

Originally too dominating for its location, the former brick fireplace in the living room was replaced with stacked stone and scaled to a more accommodating size, while the previous furnishings were replaced with a large sectional and extra lounge chair just for dad! Instead of being used as simply a pass-through to the kitchen area, this is now a popular gathering spot for this active family of six, swinging the pendulum back to its original intention. Additionally, the hearth room fireplace was given a facelift to brighten the space. “We are so appreciative to Arlene and all her staff for their dedication and professionalism they displayed while working on the project,” the homeowner says. “As Arlene predicted, we are using rooms we never had spent time in.”

"I was really passionate about making imagery, ads and beautiful websites to attract people to the businesses," she says. "I worked from home, so I had the flexibility to explore my passion and start my blog in a part-time setting. I didn't go to school for fashion—I had just always loved it. I knew how to brand really well, so that's what helped me start off.” It's easy to see why readers of all ages can connect to Cella Jane. "I share my life and what I've experienced with motherhood, my favorite health and fitness tips, and my family," Hillyard says. "I got married, had a baby and I shared it all on my blog, so it's not just fashion—it evolves as my life evolves. I think it's pretty relatable for women as they grow." Hillyard is all about family, with support and inspiration found right at home in Leawood with her husband, Michael, and children, Sutton and Greyson. "My husband is my No. 1 supporter. He was the one that pushed me to get started, attend events and do certain things that were outside of my realm. He's a huge fan and does so much work, shooting about 60 percent of our content," she says. "As for as my children, they don't know they support me with it, but they do because they are a part of what I share. They teach me so much in life and in motherhood, and I get to share that with my readers. Doing fashion shoots with Sutton is my favorite—we get an excuse to dress up and go on mommy-daughter dates. My parents and sisters are very supportive as well. My sisters both loved the blog so much that they've started their own, and we're all supportive of each other. They're growing and learning from me, so it's fun working and sharing that similarity with them." Hillyard's focus is on attainable style, hand selecting each and every item with the everyday woman in mind.

I started Dolyn Bags in January of 2014, after graduating from Stephens College with a bachelor's in apparel studies. I bought a large industrial machine and a bunch of scrap hides and began designing my first pieces out of my grandmotherâ€™s basement. Since my education was in apparel, there were many failed attempts at the perfect bag! I obsessed over every detail, determined to achieve the perfect result of fine craftsmanship, practicality, luxury and class. The brand really took off for me in March of 2015 when I launched a nine-piece collection in Kansas City Fashion Week to much success!

WHY HANDBAGS AND PURSES? WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS AREA OF DESIGN?

I specifically care about longevity and creating staple pieces for men and women that will be relevant for decades. These values were best represented through leather products and accessories as a whole due to their versatility. So, although Iâ€™ve always loved bags, the decision to create a brand around them was as much for logic as it was design aesthetic. The brand name was chosen from one of my favorite names, Gwendolyn. I shortened the name to make it crisp and androgynous with the intention of an eventual emphasis on travel bags. CONTINUED >

3. WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS UNIQUE?

My products are all handmade one by one in Kansas City. They often sport unique color blocking and interiors and are very striking in appearance and touch. It is common for my customers to come directly to my shop in the West Bottoms to fully customize their purchase. It is fun for my clients to see firsthand where the bags are made and have a say in the pocket lining, for example.

4. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR DESIGNS?

It is hard to pinpoint a specific origin for inspiration. I am inspired often by movies, people-watching, travel and my personal preferences. If I see a style or silhouette that is popular, I often take a stab at a (typically more complex) version of it, or I’m inspired to go in the completely opposite direction. I feel that trends are useful and important to pay attention to, but I don’t believe in following what everyone else is doing either. So my brand offers kind of a bit of everything.

5. DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL FAVORITE BAG YOU HAVE DESIGNED? WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO BAG OR PURSE?

My personal favorite is definitely the Kerri-All Tote. Named after my mama, it was my take on the simple tote bags that are so popular now. I added some blocking, some suede, magnets for an alternate silhouette option, fun pockets and long, comfortable straps. It has been a hit, and I carry mine everywhere, with two smaller bags inside so I’m prepared for every occasion.

am Mary Burger, and I am the designer for Jet Couture Jewels. Jewelry designing is a creative process that involves imagination and visual artistry, the product of which can tell a story, evoke an emotion or offer a glimpse into the past that words cannot express.

My designs are a mix of classic, bohemian and eclectic styles,

and there are a number of factors that influence my work. I have a background in photography which continues to be a passion as well as an influence in my designs. My love of travel and being exposed to innovative, breathtaking and creative regions of the world has had a significant impact in my designs. The experience of exploring new cities, cultures and hidden alleys has allowed me to collect pieces as I go, and with that, many memories of my journeys. From finding a cool piece of turquoise and vintage pawn silver in New Mexico to hanging out in San Francisco’s Chinatown and hunting for the unique antiques to navigating the streets of Paris, India and Italy, I am always drawing inspirational references from the sights, sounds and beauty around me. designs. Precious or semi-precious, I am always inspired by these natural wonders with their gorgeous vibrant colors, shapes and healing properties. Most of my jewelry includes one or more gemstones, which is why finding the right color combination and texture is imperative. I love dramatic and bold jewelry, but knowing that not everybody is a fan, I also enjoy the challenge of creating a delicate but strong piece as well. The pearl, also known as the gem of the sea, is another staple in my work. I love that pearls can now be worn formal or casual or playful and edgy. Styling a juxtaposed look brings a neat twist to any ensemble, and combining pearls with turquoise and suede is a personal favorite of mine. Vintage jewelry is another passion, and I love to repurpose it and give it new life. I use these wonderful finds to blend a look that is fashionable and unique. I am in awe of the '50s and '60s era—the sophistication of the old Hollywood glitz look that is synonymous with glamour and elegance. My pieces are created by hand with the help of metal smiths and stringers, but I am the mind behind the design. From selecting the precious metals to sourcing the stones, crystals, suede and vintage heirlooms, it is exciting to watch from the beginning all of these components merge together to spring a concept to life. I am inspired by equestrian heritage and have introduced a new line of suede with gemstones and vintage heirlooms. The earthy brown tones add a style that maintains a natural vibe and adds a touch of country cool. I have learned as a designer that I have to take chances and sometimes I fail, but usually, I learn from those failures, and my work is enhanced in the end. My designs also allow me to give back to my friends and my community that supports me. I hope that you like them as much as I enjoyed designing them. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place the cinnamon sticks and fruit into a large pitcher. Add wine, apple cider, brandy, orange juice and lemon juice. Allow to sit in the refrigerator anywhere from 3 to 24 hours; 6-8 hours is best! 2. Pour the sangria and fruit into glasses. Add a splash of club soda. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired.
