W
ith summer in full swing, my house has become a revolving door of neighbor kids and friends coming and going, continual trips to the grocery store, campouts in the backyard (by the way, birds start chirping at 4:00 a.m.) and baseball, baseball and more baseball. It seems like no matter how hard I try to keep our summers from filling up with too much busyness so that we can enjoy the relaxed schedule, it always has a way of flying by. It feels like summer just started, and here we are at July already. How can it be?! I usually start my summer off with a bucket list of activities to accomplish. The list consists of a mix of fun activities we do as a family every summer, new places we want to try and lofty goals of summer enrichment for my kids. I hate to admit it, but we generally only get to about half of the list, and the summer enrichment goals are often times not as enriching as I originally dreamt up. However, it seems like the things that are unplanned like a spontaneous early morning walk with one of my kids or a pickup game of one-on-one basketball with my son ends up being the moments I treasure the most. The older my kids get, the more I want to make every summer count and to be filled with fun memories, big or small. One of the best things about summer is grilling out and all the fresh summer foods. We wanted to share a few favorite summer recipes with you in this issue, as well as a couple of easy homemade ice cream recipes for a treat on a hot summer night. We may have polished off the ice cream after shooting the food spread, so speaking from experience, that strawberry ice cream is amazing. Plus, it is easy to adapt the recipe to be dairy-free if needed.

The NelsonAtkins Museum offers free daily tours as well as a self-guided scavenger hunt brochure for kids that guides them in exploring the museum’s exhibits. avern at Mission Farms is an Americanstyle restaurant located in Mission Farms.
It features a diverse menu with an elevated twist on American classics. Great salads, sandwiches and seafood including a fresh catch of the day, as well as the hand-cut steaks, pastas and brunch dishes are all prepared fresh and tweaked in such a way that makes them unique and delicious. My favorite is the grilled vegetable salad. Grilling the marinated portabella, asparagus, Roma tomato, red pepper and zucchini makes this salad stand out among the ordinary salad fare you will find at most restaurants. The caramelization that happens by slightly charring the veggies intensifies the flavor and brings out their sweetness. Adding in the shaved Parmesan and rosemary basil vinaigrette that tops this salad completes the elevation. The elevated sandwiches include a grilled cheese with four kinds of cheese, a burger topped with braised barbecue short ribs and tacos that get an element of freshness with a house-made chili lime slaw. At brunch, you will find the classic eggs Benedict along with a twisted version called the farmers Benedict, which incorporates fresh biscuits and sausage gravy into the mix. There is also the caprese Benedict that incorporates fresh spinach and tomato. If you like oatmeal, try the cinnamon and sugar quinoa for a unique twist on the morning staple. The space opened in Mission Farms in September 2012 and has the same owners as its sister restaurant Tavern in the Village, located in Prairie Village. I am a big fan of both of these spaces and frequent them often. My most recent visit was for brunch after our daughter had just run a half-marathon with some friends. The server promptly brought out our made-to-order beignets and took great care of our little group of starving runners. We made a reservation before going, and although the space was busy, it looked like there were still a few tables, so I don’t think walk-ins should have too long of a wait. If you are worried or going with a large group of nine or more, it is best to call ahead.

The atmosphere at Tavern at Mission Farms is beautiful from the moment you enter, starting with the ornate wooden doors. Homemade Fresh Strawberry Ice Cream Ingredients 1 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons honey 1/2 cup half-and-half 1 cup heavy whipping cream

Instructions:
1. In a bowl, mix strawberries, sugar, honey and lemon juice and let sit for 15-20 minutes. 2. After 20 minutes, mash strawberry mixture with a potato masher or fork till the large chunks are broken up. For ice cream without chunks, puree the strawberry mixture in a blender. 3. Next, add heavy whipping cream, half-and-half and vanilla extract to the mixture. Pour into your ice cream maker and let churn for 15-20 minutes.
4. Eat soft right away or place in freezer safe container for 3-4 hours to set.

Margarita Ice Cream Ingredients 5 or 6 limes 1 cup sugar 2 cups heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate 2 tablespoons triple sec 1 tablespoon tequila 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
Instructions:
1. Finely grate zest from two limes. Half and juice all the limes, and measure out 1/2 cup juice. Save any additional juice for serving. 2. Whisk sugar into lime juice. Next, whisk in remaining ingredients. 3. Pour mixture into ice cream maker and churn for 20 minutes or until thick. Pack into a plastic container, cover and freeze firm one or more hours.

Enter through one front door of the cozy shop, and you’ll see floral designers at work fashioning everything from single stems or a $25 grab-and-go bouquet to large, lush fresh-fromthe-garden arrangements. through another door into the recently expanded gift shop space, and you’ll find an eclectic assortment of items hand-picked by Brett and Matney. Although the recent expansion has tripled her business’ square footage, Brett takes pride in the small, local aesthetic of the neighborhood as well as the old-fashioned experience she and Matney can provide there. “We have the kind of store where people come over and over again for the really good customer service where we know you, we offer free gift wrapping and delivery, and we present things really nicely and with care,” Brett says. Before Brett and Matney became business partners, Brett was a customer of Matney’s longtime business, Matney Floral in Fairway, Kansas. They got to know each other well in 1999 while planning events surrounding Leslie’s husband George Brett’s
