ven though I don’t love frigid temperatures, December is by far my favorite month of the year. The excitement and magic of watching my kids experience all of our family holiday traditions is so much fun, and the anticipation of Christmas morning makes me still feel like a kid. I absolutely love every part of it, and I think I have just as hard of a time falling asleep on Christmas Eve as my kids do, because I can’t wait to see their faces light up the next morning. My oldest child is most like how I was on Christmas Eve. I hear him get up several times throughout the night to check out the stockings and to shake presents (I pretend I don't hear him), and then he sneaks back to bed, only to get back up an hour later to do the same thing. The anticipation is just too much for him.

One of the things I marvel at regarding my childhood Christmas tree is my mom’s ability to leave the tree just as we decorated it. (I have 9 siblings, so the tree was a hot mess after we were done adorning it with decor.) Our favorite thing about decorating that tree was stringing tons of popcorn strands. I still can remember the numbing pain of sticking my fingers a million times, but it was worth it. By the time Christmas morning finally came around, the majority of the popcorn that once decorated the tree was eaten off the strand. (Yes, my mom fed us….we apparently liked the taste of stale popcorn). That tree was quite the sight, and makes me smile every time I think of it. I love to get caught up in all of the fun that comes with the holidays like visits with Santa, making gingerbread houses, looking at holiday light displays, ice-skating, ugly christmas sweater parties, shopping for gifts and so on. However, I always hope that I instill in my family the true meaning of Christmas and the spirit of giving during the holiday season, especially to those in need. Whatever your December holidays and traditions are, I hope you enjoy the beauty of the season around KC. The lights and festivities around the city are plentiful and there is so much to do for whatever walk of life you are in. Cheers to a Happy New Year!

BRING IN A NEW, UNWRAPPED TOY FOR A BOY AGES 6-13 McLain’s Market, just north of 435 and Roe, offers more than just baked goods and sweet treats. The new location offers a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items, as well as a “grab and go” section where you’ll find salads, wraps, sandwiches, homemade juice and protein balls. A full coffee bar is staffed with a professional barista, pouring the finest local coffees. In the evenings, you can get appetizers and desserts along with a small selection of beer and wine. Local entrepreneur, Greg Hirleman, and his partners bought McLain’s Bakery two years ago and two of his children, Jeff Hirleman and Mollie Lothman, took on the task of managing the business. Building on the history of baking in-house and fresh every day, Jeff and Mollie expanded the concept to include breakfast, and eventually lunch, at the Waldo location. The expansion was wildly successful, so the two siblings began looking to add a second location in south Johnson County. “We grew up just down the street from McLain’s Market, and thought this area of town needed a special local eatery,” says Jeff.

“We felt familiar with this part of town,” adds Mollie, “and wanted to create a fun, local place where people could come and hang out.” They chose a site that they drove past on a regular basis. It was a former gas station and convenience store that had sat idle for a number of years. They signed a lease in April, and the renovation began in mid-summer. The transformation has been amazing. The wood and glass façade sets a welcoming tone as you enter McLain’s Market. Inside, the bright, open space features more natural wood, industrial tables and chairs, a cement floor and a collection of interesting light fixtures. A patio is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a sweet treat on a mild day. And, for those in a hurry, the drive-through can get you served and on your way in no time. So how do this sibling business partnership work? “I had always wanted to start a coffee shop and my sister a bakery,” Jeff explains. “We work well together. We have different

strengths, which helps us navigate the various aspects of this business.” “”I focus on customer service, training staff, interacting with customers,” says Mollie. “Jeff is calm in all situations, can fix anything, and he focuses on the kitchen processes and production.” According to Mollie, they have an amazing team at McLain’s Market, and everyone is very customer focused. “Jeff and I are excited to bring jobs to the area. We are very team oriented, and we all work together. For example, everyone shares in the tips, from the dishwashers and line cooks to the counter staff. It’s a very fun and fair environment for us and for all our employees.” The two are very pleased with the reception McLain’s Market has received already. According to Jeff, they wanted to create a welcoming space for the community to gather. “I think we’ve accomplished that with McLain’s Market. We are enjoying getting to know our new neighborhood.”

The American Youth Ballet is the premiere classical ballet performing company based in Overland Park, Kansas that prides itself on a standard of excellence in performances throughout the region. Founded by Dennis and Kathy Landsman in 1979, the not for profit studio serves as an educational charity by creating a space for young dancers to learn and grow all while sharing music and dance with the community. The company is comprised of pre-professional Kansas City area dancers ranging from 10 to 19 years old, training in a special regiment of ballet, pointe, pas de deux, and modern to prepare dancers for careers in top companies across the country. Training at the American Dance Center school, the studio holds open auditions for dancers all over the metro, so everyone has a chance to participate in performances. The company has produced six new full length ballets and over 50 smaller mixed repertory pieces in the last eight seasons alone under the direction of Jennifer Tierney and Kristopher Estes-Brown. The company's audience and repertory continue to grow. With a strong background in dance, Tierney started her training with the Deane Dance Center in Sacramento, and then went on to the Ballet West Conservatory in Salt Lake City. She has been in numerous performances with leading roles and has taught in several training schools across the country. Now as a teacher and director at AYB, Tierney's teaching style revolves around the path that she sees for each individual young dancer. Her teaching inspiration comes in every single face she is so lucky to

see each week. "I am a part of their lives for such a long time. I see them learn, grow, and am their teacher sometimes from age three all the way to their teenage years. It's an incredible experience. The reason why I so strongly believe that ballet is amazing for young people is because it requires so much hard work, discipline, and focus. Ballet presents obstacles that mirror real life situations. They get the chance to learn how to overcome them in a nurturing environment at a young age. Watching a young person's face light up as they understand a concept or accomplish a step for the first time is the reason why I teach. That's all the inspiration I need." The Nutcracker cast has just over 200 roles, many of which are double, sometimes triple cast in order to give more students the opportunity to perform and try different character roles. Tierney wants every young artist involved to get the most enriching experience possible at AYB. Their traditional version of The Nutcracker is choreographed by Tierney's husband, Kristopher Estes-Brown. "The musicality and staging is so intricate and interesting you could easily attend several performances and find something different to enjoy each time" said Tierney. Each year, over 10,000 people are affected by the studio's community programs that bring their performances directly to public schools at no cost. For many of us, the holiday season would not be complete without a trip to the Country Club Plaza to see the lights. Rising in vertical and horizontal precision, the multi-colored lights trace the contour of the city’s Plaza shopping district in a dramatic blend of tradition, celebration and electric festivity. The famous tradition draws its beginnings in a moment of spontaneity. In preparation for the 1925 holiday season, the Plaza merchants adorned the area’s sidewalks with small Christmas trees. For additional ornamentation, Charles S. Pitrat, head of maintenance for the Nichols Company, draped a single strand of colored bulbs over the entrance to the Suydam Building (currently the Millcreek Building on 47th street, the district’s original structure). The tradition really did not get going, however, until three years later when the Plaza Theater tower, then the highest point in the area, was completed and the decision was made to try to light that and every other building. As the shopping district expanded, the tradition grew in equal proportion. Today, that 44

single-string afterthought has turned into an annual affair that defines our city. In the years that followed, Pitrat added a crew to install the lights. At that time it was all done with wooden ladders which was a slow, tedious process. The men would climb up the ladders, attach the lights, move the ladder over, and climb back up. It was grueling work that took six months to hang 45 miles of wiring. Today, while the process is much easier, there is still tons of work and man hours to get all the lights hung and working by Thanksgiving night in time for the lighting ceremony. Capital Electric, the company responsible for hanging the lights, begins the process in August which entails covering the 55 acres that make up the Plaza district. Each section of the KCP&L Plaza Lights is made to fit the same spot each year. There is a coding system on aluminum tags to identify where each string belongs. This system enables them get the right building, right spot, and right height each year. There are tens of thousands bulbs used each year, and they get checked daily

for burned-out bulbs. Retired Plaza lights are added to all gifts wrapped at Customer Service during the holidays. 2016 marked the 86th anniversary of the Plaza Lighting Ceremony on Thanksgiving night which draws hundreds of thousands each year to see one of the most spectacular holiday lighting displays. To ensure there are no glitches, there is a practice lighting the day before Thanksgiving from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. which some Kansas Citians get up early to view. From Thanksgiving on, the lights are on each day from 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. until mid-January. Then the takedown process begins and goes on until March, where the lights are organized and stored in a building on the Plaza. The holiday season ushers in many traditions, and the Plaza Lighting Ceremony is one that this community truly cherishes. “We’re thrilled to be a part of something special that so many friends and families come together for each year,” states Meredith Keeler, the general manager of the Country Club Plaza. Shining each night, the lights create an almost magical holiday marketplace, so take an evening to enjoy the magnificent architecture and dazzling lights of this time-honored holiday tradition.
