Health & Wellness Issue Yours, Mine and Our Goals

Kathy Graham | kathy.graham@citylifestyle.com

It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. A worthwhile goal may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Remember, We Are Lawrence....Together. This year, my resolution is to focus on being kinder. I want to take the time to think about others and be more mindful of those around me. I would like to see the good in others, be less quick to anger and to practice forgiveness instead. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. After the hubbub of the holidays, it seems that the new year gives us a quiet moment to take a pause and reassess our lives. During this retrospection, on the cusp of a new year, many of us ponder questions like, “What can we do better in 2023?” and “How can we improve our lives and ourselves?” With that in mind, we will kick off 2023 with this issue focusing on the importance of being healthy in body, mind, spirit and even financially. Flip through the pages and enjoy! Wishing you a very healthy and happy new year!

EXTENDING WELLNESS TO THE COMMUNITY

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

Taking care of and connecting with others has always been a priority for Dr. Amelia Rodrock. As a young mother twenty three years ago she knew as a massage therapist that expanding her skills and education would be paramount to owning and developing a business in Lawrence. Thanks to the encouragement of those in her community and her perseverance, Amelia obtained her Chiropractic degree from Cleveland University-Kansas City and has maintained a thriving practice for the last ten years. Her husband Jeremy maintains his own chiropractic practice in Baldwin City. While Rodrock Chiropractic started with only one employee, Amelia now employs several people in her office and considers her business more of a family wellness practice. Though the office primarily focuses on chiropractic care, she has branched into infant adjustments, wellness seminars, and even hosted monthly meetings to better reach those in the community. She attributes Lawrence’s openness to alternative medicine

to her ability to connect with families in this way. Even throughout a global pandemic when everyone seemed so isolated, her practice was able to maintain much of its clientele. As a self-proclaimed natural introvert, Amelia admits that going to work every day fulfills her own need for touch. She also attributes the success of her practice to having such a positive work environment, “It’s just so pleasant when you go into a doctor's office and everything looks nice, and it smells good," she said. "It’s not often you go into a medical office and everyone is happy and having a good time. We’re always happy to see people and are very welcoming. We create a connection with our patients. In a time when so many have felt disconnected, people really needed that physical touch.” After years of juggling motherhood with a full work week, now that her four children, Dorryen, Lillian, Myah, and Amelia Joy are grown, Amelia is still heavily involved in running her practice but she’s able to shift her focus to interests outside of work. The first of many loves has been her small hobby farm south of Lawrence. Amelia and her husband Jeremy started their farm six years ago with only a few chickens and an adopted rooster named Brownie, but have quickly expanded their brood to include goats, turkeys, sheep, pigs, two donkeys, and a Scottish Highland steer, Mr. McFluffins. (Just in case you were worried, Amelia assures that these lovable fur babies are friends, not food.) As if raising a menagerie of animals while managing a practice weren’t enough to keep any two people busy, Amelia is also rigorously training for her second Ironman Triathlon.

She completed her first Ironman in September 2022, in Chattanooga, TN and is signed up for one in Texas this April. Having a coach helps her stay on track. Training consists of swimming, biking, and running and ranges from ten to twenty hours a week. She's also planning a women’s seminar for January 28th to assist other women in their personal growth. The goal of this seminar is to create connections and help women find peace within themselves. In the past, Amelia has started programs to help those around her invest in themselves. Some examples of the encouragement she’s given in her programs included “75 Hard”. This includes 75 days of sticking to a healthy diet, working out twice daily for 45 minutes (once outside), reading ten pages of a personal development book a day, drinking a gallon of water daily, and recording their progress with a picture. “The goal is not to lose weight, but to realize how much time you actually have when you’re directing your energy. It’s easy to spend your time taking care of the kids, the house, and the animals. But how much time do we waste scrolling through Facebook or just sitting around? By directing your energy you realize you can make time," she said. "The goal is growth and reflection, but you will also lose weight and that can be a bonus. mental toughness makes you realize you can do hard things every single day.” Through all of these endeavors, Amelia maintains her love of family. She recently became a grandmother for the first time and feels that it’s still important to check in with her kids. “I try to call or text my kids every day," she said. "They have jobs, lives, and families now, but it’s so important to me that they know I’m interested, and that I love them." Amelia might be an empty nester, but as with most of her goals and passions she’s using this as an opportunity for growth. Reconnecting with her husband has become something that’s new and exciting for them both and it’s given them a new perspective on each other and their lives together. “When we first got together, we each had kids. They were our main focus. Now that they are grown, it’s important that we to start dating each other again. It’s fun planning date nights and spending time together. We all need these connections.” To find more about Rodrock Chiropractic visit chirorock.com.

Truity Credit Union People Helping People Since 1939

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Back in 1939, it was difficult, if not impossible, for a woman to get a loan. So instead of waiting for it to happen, women did what they have done for decades - they made it happen. Jane Phillips, wife of Frank Phillips of Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, along with several other female employees, decided to form a credit union so that they could pool their money to save and borrow at a lower rate of interest than the bank. In April 1939, Jane Phillips Sorority Credit Union opened for business. Soon after, the credit union was opened to all Phillips Petroleum Company employees. In 1941, the name changed to 66 Federal Credit Union and remained such until 2013 when Truity Credit Union became the official business name. While the idea of a credit union was not new (the first credit union in the U.S. was formed in 1909 in New Hampshire), the idea of a woman stepping into such a position was unheard of in the late 1930s. Luckily for the women in Bartlesville, Jane Phillips wasn’t hindered by societal expectations. Fast forward to today, and this simple philosophy of people helping people continues to guide Truity Credit Union. They offer members a full range of financial services including savings and checking accounts, mortgage loans, and investment planning. True to credit union form, members are still owners and there are no shareholders like there are in traditional banking institutions. By reinvesting profits back into the membership group, they are able to offer lower rates with fewer fees. Today, you’ll find Truity Credit Union branches in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. We visited with three Lawrence branch managers to learn a little bit more about this local Lawrence lender.

Jordan Griffin Branch Manager at Truity Credit Union - 6th Street Jordan has been at Truity since 2018. She lives in Lawrence with her husband of three years, Maurice, their 2-year old daughter Alivia, and a cat named TJ. WHAT MAKES TRUITY DIFFERENT? We really care about our members. Having somewhere that you can go in and you can talk to the people and get the care and attention you need is very important. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? I like that I can help people make sure they are in the right accounts and products and know they are in good hands. This job enables me to be a part of community groups so when I’m there at work it feels much more like a hobby and hanging out with friends than a job. WHAT KIND OF FINANCIAL ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE? Go into your credit union and find a personal banker, a member consultant, and let them look at your account. I think that is probably the most beneficial thing that anyone can do because there are so many different products and you need to make sure you’re in the products that best fit your needs. I think that is what we do best at Truity - our personalized service.

Branch Manager at Truity Credit Union - 23rd Street

Branch Manager at Truity Credit Union - 31st Street

Johnathan has been at Truity since 2021. He lives in Lawrence with his wife and pet labradoodle, Cooper. They expect to receive a foster child by the beginning of this year. He loves sports, the outdoors, his family, and church. They live by the motto - Love God, love people, and make a difference.

Caitlin has been at Truity since March, 2022. She lives in Lawrence with her husband Zachary, their two-year old daughter, two cats, and a dog. She loves traveling, hiking, and coffee. She was previously very involved in the Lawrence community through her career as a REALTOR® and had built really strong relationships with people at Truity due to their community involvement. Those relationships made the branch manager position a natural choice when it became available.

WHAT MAKES TRUITY DIFFERENT? Our memberships - the fact that we don’t have to pay off a bunch of big investors or just turn profits. We don’t have to put money back into anyone’s pocket but our own members. We have lower loan rates and higher savings rates. The heartbeat of everything that we do is try to give it back to the community. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? At Truity, we make an effort to get to know you as a member. You’re more than just a number. We look at so many things when it comes to loans, so many strategies as to how we can best help you. We care because at the end of the day we have to make the community happy to keep going. WHAT KIND OF FINANCIAL ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE? I have two pieces of advice. Don’t spend money that you don’t have and always, always take time before you make a big financial decision.

“At Truity, we make an effort to get to know you as a member. You’re more than just a number.” 18

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

WHAT MAKES TRUITY DIFFERENT? We are not for profit, so since the emphasis isn’t on making money for a small group of people, we are able to really prioritize members. Membership is at the heart of everything we do because we don’t exist without members. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? My very favorite thing about my job is watching our members and our employees grow. We’re able to help walk people through options and make a difference in their lives and make their financial life better. I also love helping our employees understand how to help membership and how to grow professionally. We have a great group here. WHAT KIND OF FINANCIAL ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE? Probably the best piece of advice I could give the public is if you’re not happy with the service you’re receiving, find a place where you receive good service. If you feel like just another customer, look around for somewhere better.

I know life can be a balancing act.

FINDING FITNESS IN 2023 THE KEY TO PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELLNESS IS FINDING THE RIGHT WORKOUT

Rasha Adhima

One of the top New Year’s resolutions is starting an exercise program. But which one? There are so many fitness methods to consider, making it daunting to choose one that is best for your goals. One way to start is with a personal trainer. Rasha Adhima has been one at the Jayhawk Club for 18 months. Her job is to tailor a client’s workout according to their ability and needs. She assesses their form and body alignment and strategizes corrective exercises if needed to avoid injuries. She also shares tips on designing a program and building confidence so they can eventually perform the routines independently and safely. “I listen to their goals and encourage future goals,” Adhima says. “I also keep them on track with their progress, and my favorite part, I give them homework between sessions. Some comply more than others.” Adhima notes it’s a myth to think only beginners need a personal trainer. “Fitness journeys are endless, intensive research and research is perpetual. The assistance of a personal trainer through their fitness journeys sheds more light on the possibilities, directions, and resources to succeed. The relationship between the trainer and the client plays a major factor in staying motivated. Regular communication outside the frame of sessions is crucial to keep them cared for and accountable.”

For 50 years, Jazzercise has been known as the dance-party workout. However, this exercise method has moved way past the legwarmers and leotards of the 1980s generation. Today a 60-minute class provides a high-intensity combination of cardio, strength, Pilates, hip-hop, yoga, and kickboxing. “Jazzercise has continuously evolved with the times,” says Amy Sand, owner of the Jazzercise studio in Lawrence. “Current music, current moves, and constantly changing and adapting, so it never gets boring.” Sand has been teaching Jazzercise for 15 years and has owned the Lawrence studio for the past eight years. Not particularly athletic growing up, she started an aerobics club in high school where they would work out to Kathy Smith and Denise Austin’s videos. When she discovered Jazzercise, she says it was love at first class. For first-timers, Sand encourages them to stand towards the front of the class so they can see the instructor better. However, she says they hardly ever take her advice and usually hide in the back. The studio offers a buddy program, which pairs people with a workout partner for support, motivation, and friendship. “It’s important for everyone to find a form of exercise that is enjoyable and not a chore,” she says. “It’s easy to stay motivated if you’re doing something you enjoy and it becomes a part of your routine. Jazzercise isn’t just a fun and effective workout. We’re also an amazing, supportive community, so it’s easier to stay motivated when you want to dance with your friends every day.” For information visit jazzercise.com/location/jazzercise-lawrence-fitness-center. The early days of the COVID pandemic saw many people purchasing exercise bikes for at-home workouts. As lockdowns and fears eased, more and more home riders are venturing to indoor cycling studios like Free State Ride at Body Boutique. You can enjoy a simulated outdoor cycling adventure in a theater-style setting, with a rocking sound system and fantastic light effects. “Virtual classes are very convenient,” says Shannon Williams, a cycling teacher at Body Boutique. “But I think you get more out of your workout with an in-person class. You have an instructor and other members there to help motivate you and push you to do more than you would on your own. Sometimes the energy in the room is electric and leaves you feeling amazing. It’s hard to generate that same energy in a virtual class.” A cycling class consists of a warm-up, extended ride of drills, cool-down, and stretching routine. The drills combine climbs, flats, jumps, sprints, sit and stands, single-leg pedaling movements, and cadence drills. According to Williams, cycle classes work for any fitness level. “One of my favorite things about cycling is that it’s high cardio but easy on the joints. Start slow. Add a little bit at a time. You don’t have to go all in all at once.” Williams has worked at Body Boutique for eight years and taught cycling classes for the last five years. She says, “When I’m teaching, I try to give 100 percent. I genuinely love teaching, so when members see that, it motivates them to give a little more. I also try to educate them on the benefits of exercising and how it can help in their day-today lives. Great music and cheesy jokes help too.” Go to bodyboutiquefitness.com/cycling for information and to sign up for a one-week free trial pass.

This exercise method offers a unique full-body, low-impact, high-intensity activity focused on improving muscle tone, strength, agility, and flexibility. “I promise you’ve never done a workout like this before,” says Carrie Barton, who has owned the Lawrence location with Kim Ashley for six years. “Pure Barre is intelligently designed to deliver the best, safest workout for all body types. Every class is designed to fatigue your muscles in a smart and attainable way.” Pure Barre specializes in barre, familiar to anyone who has seen a ballet class. The workouts can be adapted to fit all body types and fitness levels. Barton notes she continued to teach classes while pregnant twice until she gave birth. She adds, “I have taught Pure Barre for over ten years and have welcomed men and women of all types into the studio. People with knee replacements, rheumatoid arthritis, hip injuries, multiple sclerosis, pregnancy, and much more. You don’t have to look like the person next to you, and in fact, you shouldn’t. Your workout isn’t their workout and vice versa.” Pure Barre is located at 4821 W 6th Street. Join a free Foundations weekly class to learn the Pure Barre technique. Acai Bowls A FRUITFUL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

When Natalie Anderson and her husband left Lawrence after her graduation in 2021 with her Masters Degree in Accounting, she knew someday she would own her own business but the road to that dream was still a little fuzzy. “I knew I wanted the freedom of owning my own business but I didn’t know what that would look like at that time,“ said Natalie.

The newly married couple explored a post-graduate future in Arizona and noticed the presence of the Acai Bowl on every corner. Natalie and Austin chose to return to Lawrence to start their family in September of 2021 and they quickly settled into a plan to open their own business, Fruitful Acai Bowls. Natalie had always been into health food and understood the success of the Acai Bowl craze and wanted to bring part of that booming business to Lawrence. “Of anywhere in Kansas I think the people in Lawrence tend to be a little more health-conscious. It seemed like something that would work well here. There’s also such a wide variety of customers with so many students,” said Natalie And work well it has. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of the Acai Bowl experience, the origin of the Acai Bowl actually began

in the late 1980s and its popularity has soared in recent years. The native Brazilian berry gives the bowls a creamy sorbet-like texture topped with a multitude of healthy organic options such as granola, fruit, coconut, bee pollen, and even chocolate. The anti-inflammatory rich berry has really increased in popularity with America’s heightening health awareness. Acai Bowls may have the appearance of a decadent dessert and certainly are a great healthy alternative for ice cream or frozen yogurt, but for those health-conscious individuals aiming for weight loss, the bowl can also serve as a meal replacement. With so many health benefits, it’s clear why Lawrence residents have latched on to the organic goodness. Natalie felt this trend would find a great place in the Lawrence community but opted out of a downtown storefront. They instead situated themselves in the highly trafficked 6th street location. The visibility of the store combined with a steady social media presence has given the young entrepreneur a great start for the new business. In fact, they sold ten times their goal upon opening and aren’t slowing down any time soon.

“We considered a downtown location but wanted our product to be something people can quickly pop in for. The parking downtown doesn’t always allow people to stop and go easily. We wanted to be a place people can just grab and go when they need to,” said Natalie. Having her son Blaise so soon after opening her own business was daunting but having grown up in the Lawrence area and attended the University of Kansas she knew she would have the advantage of a core network of customers and the help of family. Not to mention, owning her own business with 22 employees has been a great way to afford herself the schedule that new motherhood demands. “There’s no way I could have this kind of flexibility without this opportunity. And we also just missed the Lawrence Community while we were away. Lawrence has always been home and we’ve always circled back to it,” she notes. Vertical Gardens Are

Moving Indoors

The Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, "Oh, Grow Up!" ARTICLE BY KELSEY HUBER

Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since king Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls”. Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall”. Designers have dubbed them “statement walls”. But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do - as “vertical gardens”. A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful

wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade. The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well. Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.

Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well. As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. Add a little color to your wall with lipstick plant, another climber named for its bright lipstick-shaped blooms. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. S0 bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . ARTICLE BY ERIN WYATT

A STEP UP Erin Wyatt, Director of Sales and Interior Designer for Paradise Carpet One. My father started Paradise Carpet One almost 20 years ago, I've worked with him for the past 10 years and in the industry on and off for over 20 years. Staircases are an easy and affordable way to update any home.

What a beautiful, rustic staircase! In this Lawrence home we created a true brown stained oak stair tread with white risers painted to match the trim then installed a rich cream and earthy brown trimmed wool stair runner. The goal for this staircase was to update but remain true to fit the style of the home. You could easily choose a more bold or organic print to really make it pop.

With this set of stairs we updated the space with wrought iron spindles and a soft medium brown solid wood stair tread with white risers. It is difficult to match real wood to luxury vinyl planking, so we went with a stain that looks very similar to some of the colors found in the f loor. We chose to keep the hard surface exposed here as the focal point and not add a runner.

Are you looking for something bold and fun? Prints make a statement depending on the color and pattern. Choosing an organic print or a more geometric print can bring a different feel to the house. This print was chosen specifically for the home and the staircase it was being installed on. The homeowner wanted a more traditional feel. Choosing a print can be tricky, make sure to consult a professional before committing.
