Celebrating Your Own Unique Style

Dear Reader,
E D I TO R
I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression. Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our lives, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection and shared understanding. Here in Lakewood Ranch, we’re fortunate to have opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our area’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that.

The 20-MINUTE, ONCE-A-WEEK WORKOUT that helps this former All-American keep up with her grandkids Kim Russell trains at 20 Minutes to Fitness, where the slowcadence method helps her build the strength and endurance she needs to enjoy an active and pain-free lifestyle. Kim Russell, a former All-American swimmer and triathlete, has always embraced physical challenges. Now 64, she’s training for her current goal: a long, healthy life filled with adventures and the energy to keep up with her three grandchildren. Instead of hours in the gym, Kim is making it happen by spending just 20 minutes a week at 20 Minutes to Fitness, building strength in a way that’s safe and sustainable as she ages. Kim first heard about 20 Minutes to Fitness through her book club. “A few women talked about how much stronger they felt after training there,” Kim says. “I gave it a try—and haven’t looked back.”
MOVING SLOW IS THE SECRET At 20 Minutes to Fitness, clients train on specialized equipment under the guidance of a certified coach. The difference is slow-cadence training, which calls for lifting weights slowly. Each repetition takes about 20 seconds, compared to just two to four seconds in traditional weight training. This ultra-slow pace leads to better results. “Our method triggers deep muscle engagement, increasing strength without stressing joints,” says Blake, general manager. “It’s a safe, efficient way to build muscle.” Each session targets every major muscle group. That means spending two to three minutes on six or seven machines. “The goal is muscle fatigue,” Blake explains. “That signals the body to rebuild stronger muscle fibers.”
SHORT TIME, BIG BENEFITS Since starting the program over a year ago, Kim has noticed a difference—especially in her back. “I used to throw my back out just unloading the dishwasher,” she says.
“When I started, my main goal was to lift my grandkids and get off the floor pain-free,” she adds. “I can do that. I feel strong again.” Her coach, Anna, gradually increases resistance, ensuring steady progress. “She knows how much to push me,” Kim adds. “It’s personalized, and that makes all the difference.” Strength that supports your life. In addition to improving strength, studies show this method can boost energy, improve balance, reduce pain and help manage chronic conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis. “We’ve had clients postpone joint replacements because their muscles are stronger,” says Angela, general manager.
CONVENIENT, CUSTOMIZED—AND IT WORKS
Another thing that keeps Kim coming back is the workout’s simplicity. “One session a week, no crowds, no pressure. It fits into my schedule, and I feel better than I have in years,” she says. “People don’t always believe it works until they try it. But I’m proof it does.”
TRY IT FOR FREE 20 Minutes to Fitness offers a complimentary consultation and first workout. To learn more or book your session, visit 20MinutesToFitness.com or call one of our three convenient Florida locations.

Gulf Coast Custom Designs creates custom furniture, home décor, and art pieces that range from cutting boards to wall décor to large tables made from wood and epoxy resin. Each item that owner and artist, Tricia Bolds, designs is truly one-ofa-kind. “No two items will ever be the same because that’s how the process works,” Tricia explains. “With each item, the wood is unique, the engraving is personal, and the resin is different. Whatever the item, it's very custom.” In addition to ocean resin designs, Tricia enjoys taking things to the next level and sinking items into resin, creating a complex and layered look. “I’ve put pressed sunflowers and wine corks into items, a board with pinecones in it, and even one that has a miniature fireball bottle sunk in there and the liquid moves because the fireball is still in the bottle,” she says. “I'm also working on a big console table with river pebbles in it. My goal when I create things is for people to stop and say, ‘I've never seen anything like this.” For customers who want to have an active part in creating items, Tricia offers group and private classes. Classes are small and intimate, ensuring each participant has the guidance needed to make their vision come to life. The online shop has something for everyone. Items usually sell quickly since they are all one-of-a-kind. If a customer cannot find what they are looking for, Tricia is happy to create a custom item. Custom projects can take anywhere from two to eight weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the project. LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME
ARTICLE BY TYLER AMADEUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIEN KING AND ALEC WALWORTH
IN
this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-perwear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for
the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that
are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

CREATING BEAUTIFUL SPACES WITH MARIE VIANCA DESIGN ARTICLE BY LISA MICHEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE MAC PHOTOGRAPHY

M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN
Marie Vianca brings a distinctive approach to design, seamlessly blending interior design with architectural elements to create stunning, functional spaces tailored to her clients’ lifestyles. Originally from Puerto Rico, where she discovered her passion for design early on, thanks to her great-grandfather's legacy, who was an architect. Marie began her path as an architect following her great-grandfather's steps and later transitioned to the interior design world, where she truly found herself. “It’s in my DNA,” she says with a smile. “Architecture taught me how to see the structure, the bones of a space—but interior design gives me the freedom to shape how it feels, how it lives. For example, a dresser and artwork can serve as a focal point, then I’ll use softer elements like accessories to create balance around it.” Her approach is rooted in both form and feeling—elevated, thoughtful, and always personal. She’s called Southwest Florida home for over 20 years, building a strong local presence rooted in community and connection. Word of her work has traveled far—thanks to client referrals, she’s now designing for homes in places like Manhattan, Boston, and even Colorado. CONTINUED >

As for interior designing style, Marie says, “I work across a range of design styles such as traditional, transitional, and modern. But personally, my favorite design style is modern with timeless aesthetic. I also love going outside the box by doing something completely different, like putting wallpaper somewhere unexpected... in this case, on the ceiling,” she says with a playful smile. “I don't follow trends. I design intuitively with intention. If it feels right in my heart, it always ends up looking astonishing.” Her design process begins with the very first conversation, where she takes the time to truly understand each client’s needs and vision. She then schedules an in-home consultation to see how they live and what they hope to achieve within their space. From there, she introduces a thoughtfully curated mix of styles, textures, and colors to spark inspiration and shape the creative direction of the project. “For me, it's very important that I spend time with my clients to understand how they feel and what they envision for their space. My goal is to turn my client’s personality and lifestyle into the design that truly reflects who they are,” she explains. “Just because we’re in Florida doesn’t mean everything has to be coastal or beach-vibes design—some clients want something entirely different. But if that’s what they love, I make sure it's a refined, sophisticated, and elevated take and not your typical beach house style.”
“Sometimes clients call me a few years later and ask, ‘Can we refresh it a little? My reply to them is ‘Absolutely—we can update a few things, shift some colors,’” Marie says. “I believe that just like the people who live in a space, their environments should grow and evolve over time. Design isn’t static but a living, breathing expression of a client’s journey, personality, and lifestyle changes. My approach is to create spaces that adapt with them, reflecting new chapters and milestones while maintaining a timeless sense of comfort and style. In other words, a well-designed home is not just a place to live but a dynamic canvas that tells the story of its inhabitants.” Marie says. Great design is not just about making things beautiful; it’s also about the underlying aspects of the job that make the design work. Marie stated, “Working on a renovation or new construction project, I look at the full pic t ure— ele c t r ic a l, plumbing, and HVAC, to make the design truly cohesive. Thanks tomyarchitecturebackground, I can understand floor plans and create construction documents when needed.” Marie offers personalized consultations tailored to your lifestyle, vision, and goals— whether you're refreshing one room or designing an entire home.
“Architecture taught me the structure of a space—but interior design gives the freedom to shape how it feels, how it lives.”

WORLD-CLASS THEATRE COSTUMES STITCHED IN SARASOTA ARTICLE BY LISA MICHEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN JENSEN
34
B ACK STAGE | ARTS + C U LT U RE
David Covach, Costume Shop Manager of the Asolo Repertory Theatre
David Covach, Costume Shop Manager of the Asolo Repertory Theatre, shared the process of bringing a costume from a sketch to a finished stage-ready garment. First, the director and designers from every aspect of theater: costume, lighting, sound, projections, props, hair and makeup, read through the script. Then sketches or storyboards are created to convey how the show will look and feel. Brainstorming begins on how to facilitate every costume in the show. The costume patterns are created by talented drapers who look at a sketch and set of measurements to figure out how to make a garment fit the body. Once the pattern is completed, a prototype or mock-up of the garment is made. Generally, there are three fittings with actors. The first meeting fine tunes the pattern with the actor and designer together. The mock-up is pinned, drawn on and manipulated until it is shaped the way the designer feels best fits the look and feel of the production.
A second fitting is conducted once the garment is remade in fashion fabrics. At this point the garment doesn't have all its closures or hems and is still easily changed or altered if needed. By the third fitting it is a finished, real garment with all the accessories. It's a time-consuming process with great attention to detail. “When the actor puts on the costume, you begin to watch their posture change, and the attitude come out as they begin to understand the character and designer's point of view. It's sort of magical, actually,” David says. “After a show, everything goes back into storage so costumes can be reused at another time.” David continues. “We also rent costumes which allows other theatres from across the country to use entire costume packages from our productions.” The Asolo also creates props on-site, provides educational opportunities and has rental space available for the community. Sweet Endings CIDER MUFFINS WITH CINNAMON-STREUSEL TOPPING
As we make the transition from Summer to Fall, these quick and easy muffins celebrate the season. Makes 12 muffins.
Streusel Topping • • • •
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
Muffins • • • • • • •
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 egg, beaten 3/4 cup apple cider or apple juice 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1. Pre-heat the oven to 400F. Grease muffin cups or line with baking cups 2. Streusel: in a small bowl, stir together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon. Use a pastry blender, two knives or fingers, cut or rub butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside. 3. Muffins: in large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt. Stir in sugar. Make a well in the center. 4. In a small bowl: combine egg, cider/juice, oil. Add all at once to the flour mixture and stir until just moistened. Batter will be lumpy. 5. Spoon 1 tablespoon of batter into each cup, sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of streusel mixture, and continue to fill the cups 2/3 full of the remaining batter. Sprinkle tops evenly with remaining streusel. 6. Bake until muffins are golden brown and toothpick inserted into the center of one comes out clean, about 15 minutes. Serve warm or transfer to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.
Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.” “I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.” This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says. When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets. “You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says. In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast. “Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says. To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / L A KE WO O D

and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family. Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted. Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS: Find a base color with pops of other colors. “Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.” If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room. Consider wallpaper. “Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says. Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs. Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.
