We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Last fall, we were visiting our daughter in New Mexico and got to explore so many interesting places including White Sands National Park. If you have never been, just imagine wave-like dunes of gypsum sand (that never gets hot!). This natural wonder covers 275 square miles of desert. Be sure to check out "The Land of Enchantment" story to see where else we explored! In the last few months, I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kids, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear, was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family - it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! ;) Happy April!

"Mayor Benjamin is a longtime public servant, who has served the people of South Carolina for over two decades.

In 1963, a raging alcoholic woke up in a City of Columbia jail. Arrested for drunk driving. Johnny Zenoni spent decades paying the price for the broken roads he traveled. But that morning, Johnny’s direction changed. Forever. Zenoni credits an encounter with Jesus in his jail cell for placing the brakes on his former life. He quit alcohol cold and made a vow to dedicate the rest of his days to serving addicts and those experiencing homelessness. Providence Home was born that same year on a farm in Lexington County with eight men. 60 years later, Providence Home remains committed to Johnny’s mission and serving the men Johnny loved. Now located on a tidy, quiet campus about a mile from downtown Columbia, Providence Home remains a Christ-focused ministry serving 60 men, providing transitional housing, and promoting recovery from drugs, alcohol, and incarceration. Our greatest goal is to see men renewed and reunited with their families and communities. Our deepest desire is to see men accept the life-saving grace of Jesus Christ. Executive Director Rob Settle has been at the helm of significant change in his decade serving Providence Home. He says to see men “turning around their lives” and returning to loved ones whole and healthy is “incredibly exciting.” But he says, “the most exciting thing is when we see men placing their faith

and trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.” Building a chapel where men in recovery can freely worship and enjoy a safe, clean, sacred place to pray, learn, and grow was a dream of Johnny’s. It seems so fitting that on the anniversary of Zenoni’s founding Providence Home, his dream is now a reality. The William “Bill” Cogdill Memorial Chapel at Providence Home will be officially opened this April. Zenoni’s family, including his son John Jr., will be there representing Johnny and his legacy. Columbia businessman Bob McAlister will be there, too. He was a close friend of Johnny’s. He says Providence Home is different because Johnny was different. “To be able to love people like Johnny loved people is not a natural thing,” McAlister notes. “It’s not natural to go under a bridge and talk to someone drunk or on drugs…and tell them there’s hope.” Long after Johnny’s passing – hope remains. It is the link in the chain that binds us to the past and strengthens us for the future. It’s what Johnny Zenoni found in a jail cell, delivered under bridges, and established in a ministry still thriving 60 years later. This month, we got to speak to Michael Woodland, owner of ESNTL Headshots. They are a premiere photography studio serving the Midlands with services of Headshots and Event Photography. When Michael retired from the military, he stuck with what he knew, firearms. For a couple of years, he taught firearm safety, Concealed Weapons Permit classes here in Columbia, SC and enjoyed shooting firearm competitions around the nation. One of my sponsors decided to go into the coffee business and asked me to do a product review. After the video was completed, they contacted me back and said they loved how the video came out and wanted me to take some pictures of the product. I took some pictures, but they did not look right to me, so I decided to take a photography class. While in the class, the instructor, Dr. Thaddeus Jones of Fanatik Productions, stated, “You will discover what you like to take pictures of, just let it happen.” About halfway through the class when we were learning about headshot photography, I discovered my niche. After a few failures and a lot of practice, I discovered a technique that will provide the client with a high-quality, captivating, memorable headshot. This is how the love of headshots and ESNTL headshots was formed.

From mountains to valleys to deserts and caverns, it is no secret that the state of New Mexico has a diverse landscape to learn about and explore. It never ceases to amaze us that we can drive several hours in each direction and encounter completely different things! Keep reading to experience some of the many landmarks and attractions that we have enjoyed during our time stationed in Eastern New Mexico.

2- SLEDDING AT WHITE SANDS

If you're up for an adventure, bring a sled to take advantage of the dunes. Fun for everyone in the family, you will be in awe that this special gypsum mineral is not like regular sand as it does not hold heat. You can walk barefoot even in the heat of the day.

1- WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK

This place is a true natural wonder! With hiking trails, picnic spots, and tons of natural wildlife, you will be amazed at the endless sight of white sandy dunes as far as the eye can see.

3- CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD

At 64-miles in length, it is the longest, the highest and most authentic steam railroad in North America, traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West. After your scenic train ride, check out the quaint town of Chama, NM.

4- CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK

Featuring more than 100 caves, Carlsbad Caverns is a must-see for any New Mexico trip. The primary attraction of the park is the Big Room cave. Visitors to the cave can hike in on their own via the natural entrance or take an elevator from the visitor center.

5- PISTACHIOLAND

This is a fun little detour on your way down to White Sands. Take a tour of a Pistachio farm, indulge in some pistachio ice cream, and you can even try some local wines. A perfect stop to break up a long drive.

6- RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

A trip to the Gorge is a must-do while visiting Taos—and that includes a drive across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. This engineering wonder spans the gorge and leaves you to see the most scenic of views. There is also a walking trail along the rim of the gorge that leaves from the parking lot on the west side of the bridge.

Miriam remembers. Today the award-winning organization has grown to a staff of six with a current budget of $2.1 million, 50% of which is spent on marketing the region. In 1998, despite many naysayers, Miriam moved the Lorick Plantation House, a two-story 1840s house, 4 miles from its original location on St. Andrews Road to North Lake Drive. Twenty-five years later, the region’s 1st Visitor’s Center continues to greet visitors from all over the world. From those early days, Miriam recognized Lake Murray’s potential as a natural resource and the impact it could have on tourism. Taking advantage of those many opportunities, Miriam established Lake Murray as a major player in the Fishing Tournament Industry. In 1998, Miriam’s creativity and determination attracted the most notable tournament trail at the time – FLW. Due to the organization, media coverage, and overall package Miriam put together, Lake Murray would go on to host the Forrest Wood Cup, known asthe “Super Bowl of fishing,” an unprecedented three times resulting in more than $95 million in economic impact. In 2022, Lake Murray hosted the XVI Black Bass World Championship, the first on US soil, and was named “The Best Bass Fishing Lake in the World” by USAngling. The record-breaking event hosted 25 nations, resulting in an overall economic impact of $21.5 million. In the fishing arena alone, CCLMC has invested $2 million to date and has generated an overall economic impact of over $185 million. April 2023 will mark the beginning of Miriam’s 40th year, as President and CEO of Capital City/Lake Murray Country, making her the longest-serving South Carolina Association of Tourism Regions (SCATR)

director in SC history. During her tenure, Miriam has held several elected positions within SCATR, including serving as its Treasurer, Chair of the Marketing Committee, and twice as its President - all the while lending her marketing expertise to numerous state-wide promotions and campaigns. At the 2023 South Carolina Governor’s Conference on Tourism & Travel, Miriam was awarded the state’s top honor the Fred Brinkman Award by SC’s Governor Henry McMaster; SCPRT Director, Duane Parrish; and President of Impact Consulting, Buddy Jennings. Her license plate says it all…through grit, determination, and an undeniable passion, Miriam Atria has helped establish Lake Murray Country as the Jewel of South Carolina. She has worked tirelessly to help the Lake Murray Country region reach its full tourism potential by “never taking no for an answer” and has literally moved buildings. With all the successes driven by Miriam’s leadership, it is no surprise that Forbes Magazine named CCLMC a “Top Southern Destination” in 2021.
