LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year, Lake Murray! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Lake Murray Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while is a nice treat! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at O'Hara's Bakery Cafe. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous 2023. Don't forget to follow us on CityLifestyle.com, "Your Destination for Local Living" as well as on Instagram @LakeMurrayLifestyle. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Lexington Golf Simulator Opens Near Lake Murray
Caliber Coffee Moves to Columbia
Lexington Medical Receives "A" Grade in Safety
Tee'd Up, a new golf simulator parlor recently opened at 1605 N Lake Drive. There are five golf simulators, each capable of playing 15 different games, as well as a separate fishing simulator. The parlor has a full bar with beer, liquor and wine and will serve food. Tee’d Up is open MondaySunday, with Monday set aside for members. We're excited about this new amenity in Lexington!
Veteran-owned small-batch coffee company, Caliber Coffee, moved its headquarters to Columbia, SC in 2022. In addition to whole bean and ground coffee options, customers can also select Caliber Coffee Single-Serve Shells. A portion of every sale will be donated to support the men and women who have fought and who continue to fight to protect the freedoms we Americans enjoy.
Lexington Medical Center was given an 'A' grade, and was ranked among the safest hospitals in South Carolina, according to the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The 'A' grade was an improvement from the Spring 2022 scoring where Lexington Medical Center received a 'B'. An 'A’ Safety Grade is an indication that hospitals are regularly evaluating their performance, so that they can best care for and protect their patients.

NEW YEAR, NEW CHANGES ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH GILLS
Are you in pain right now?
Are you in pain right now? I think we all are. Pain is relative to everyone’s different life experiences of course. You are either in pain staying the same, but wishing things were different; or you’re going through the pain of creating change in your life. Going back to the old you with your old ways of doing things will only make the pain greater. The unhappiness, the shame, fear, jealousy, self-doubt of your old life will always be worse than the pain of growing and changing into who you want to be. You already know that pain. There’s no sense in going back there. Use the pain of newness to motivate you to never go back to the place you were dissatisfied with. Why does the new year feel so enticing for changes? Why aren’t we sad about the ending of a year? Why do we only feel exited and motivated by the coming of a new year? Because there is something to look forward to. We’re thinking about the future, not the past. We’re thinking about what COULD be, not what we are giving up and leaving in the past and can’t have or do or be anymore.

So it’s no coincidence that this is by far the most popular time for setting goals and making intentions about our health and fitness. As a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist, my #1 goal is to help people see their health and fitness as the best investment they could ever make. Not a place to pinch pennies and try out different methods every month to see what might work, but to see your body and your health as the most valuable investment you’ll ever make! We’re given one body, and if it fails, there’s not a single thing you can buy that will matter anymore. When it comes to our body, the only real insurance is preventative. The most important thing we can take care of is our health. I’ve seen the trend from a different perspective over the years, from within the gym: when January hits, there’s a big spike in gym attendance and overall motivation. It lasts for about 3-4 months, and then inevitably it slows down as the seasons change, priorities shift and life fills up with other responsibilities. After summer ends, vacations are over and routines resume; the holidays start to creep onto the calendar, and then we are just far too busy to commit to a regular workout program or diet. So when the new year comes around again, it’s a natural opportunity for a fresh start and a clean slate.
The reason it’s so easy to fall out of our new year, new me habits is because when we set them, we were not concerned with our past. It’s a blank slate - the calendar said so. As cliche as it might feel, that is a powerful tool in psychology. The further we get from January 1 on the calendar, the harder we are on ourselves for some reason. I want to remind you to approach the changes we want to make all year long, with the same attitude we have on our new year’s resolutions. The past is behind us, and each new day is a new, blank slate. Far too often, people tell me they have messed up on their goals, or have failed at one diet or another workout plan. The truth is - you can’t actually mess this up. You started with one body, and you still have one body. As long as you are willing to put in the work, it’s never too late. I help women become confident and independent in their own fitness journey. I do this by empowering them with knowledge of proper form and providing them with the exact program to follow so they walk into the gym with a plan, knowing exactly what to do. Taking on
Challeng ing Ca ses Peripheral Neuropathy
ARTICLE BY DR. WADE VERCH, DC
Neuropathy has been one of the lesser understood conditions in the general public for generations now. What is it? Why do I have it? How do I get rid of it? A few of these questions, with the help of experts and a great deal of research, can finally be answered. Neuropathy is a vague term that breaks down into “Neuro” (involving a nerve) and “pathy”, which is short for pathology or a dis-eased state. This spectrum is far too broad to cover in this article. What we are primarily focused on, both in this article and in our offices, is peripheral neuropathy (also abbreviated as PN) PN has a spectrum of symptoms and presentations. Most of the cases we see are losing feeling in the feet and are often seeing their sense of balance deteriorating. The other common presentation is burning, aching, and tingling. As odd as it sounds, both numbness and pain can be present at the same time. An important distinction that we must assess in the office is to rule out the possibility of a different condition called “Radiculopathy”. A radiculopathy is a pinched nerve, commonly coming from the back/ neck or a joint space where nerves could potentially

get squeezed. We are still very capable of treating these cases, but careful diligence is necessary to determine which problem our patients are suffering from. Peripheral neuropathy affects approximately 8% of the population over the age of 55 (NIH.gov). The most common cause is credited to Diabetes Mellitus. I would like to take this opportunity to say that diabetes is not the only cause. The latest research has been compiling a list of over 140 known contributing factors leading to the development of PN. Outside of Diabetes, some of the more common causes of peripheral neuropathy we have seen in the offices are chemotherapy, agent orange exposure, agricultural and industrial chemical exposure, properly prescribed medications like frequent antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) and long-term use of statins, and occasionally surgeries. The process, involving most neuropathy cases, is similar in nature. Something causing high levels of inflammation circulates into the micro-capillaries of the extremities (usually lower extremities). Think of micro-capillaries as the smallest level of the circulatory system. An analogy of the circulatory system would be like pulling a large weed out of the ground. There is a main trunk, larger branches, and tiny little hair-like roots where most of the water and nutrients are absorbed. In the body, those micro-capillaries are analogous to those hair-like roots. Our cellular

oxygen and nutrient exchange take place largely at this level. The inflammation causes these small blood vessels to constrict and close off. This causes damage to the nerve, in time leading to a condition called demyelination. Demyelination is where the vital coatings of the nerve start breaking down. Once we get to this stage, symptoms are very progressive In cases where the nerve is cut or damaged by trauma or surgery, nerves may repair on their own in 12-18 months. If the nerve symptoms don’t resolve on their own after 18 months. Aggressive treatment may be indicated. Positive outcomes are still observed in most cases with treatment. Now that we understand how most neuropathies occur, we can discuss treatment options. The traditional management for neuropathy is pharmaceutical. Most patients will be prescribed Gabapentin or Neurontin. These are anti-seizure medications, but they have shown to de-sensitize many nerve problems. Lyrica and Cymbalta are also commonly prescribed. The problem with this type of symptom management is it does not address any of the underlying problems. As such, the disease will continue to progress until the patient is often told that nothing can be done, and they should learn to live with it. Worth noting, thousands of amputations are taking place every year due to diabetic neuropathy.

Treatment for peripheral neuropathy is MOST effective when all three root components are addressed. We target inflammation, vascular compromise, and the nerve damage with a combination of therapies which take place at home and in-office. We use FDA-cleared durable medical equipment which will go home with the patient, as well as natural products to support vascular and nerve function. Our in-office treatments help speed recovery. Correcting neuropathy takes time but we carefully set
expectations for each patient and accomplish our goals in excess of 90% of cases. If you or a loved one is suffering from peripheral neuropathy, know there IS help. Carolina West Clinic may be the most important phone call you can make. Please don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors. We have convenient locations in Lexington and Newberry.

A Breast Cancer Diagnosis During Pregnancy It was supposed to be the happiest time in Katie Feaster’s life. At age 25, the West Columbia woman and her husband Stacy were expecting their first baby. In the middle of her second trimester, Katie’s baby bump was growing. But while most moms-to-be were happily shopping for nursery furniture and thinking about baby names, Katie noticed something troublesome. There was a lump in her left breast that kept getting bigger and became uncomfortable.
“It was terrifying,” Katie said. “I had literally just gotten to the point where I was comfortable being pregnant. And now that.” She told her OB/GYN Jennifer Greene, MD, FACOG, of Carolina Women’s Physicians at Lexington Medical Center about it. Dr. Greene ordered an ultrasound of Katie’s breast. Then radiologists performed a biopsy and sent samples to Pathology.

A few days later, Katie got a phone call no one ever wants to receive, especially at such a special time of life. At age 25 and six months pregnant, Katie learned she had breast cancer.
THE TREATMENT PLAN Inside Lexington Medical Center, a multidisciplinary team of doctors came together to tackle Katie’s case. Lexington Medical Cancer Center prescribed a chemotherapy regimen that was able to be administered safely because Katie was in the second trimester of pregnancy. If Katie were in the first trimester, the chemotherapy could have harmed the baby. “They told me that if I was in my first trimester, I most likely would have miscarried,” Katie said. Katie had a three-centimeter cancerous tumor in her left breast. Pathology showed it was triple-negative breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, TNBC accounts for about 10 – 15% of all breast cancers. The term “triple-negative” refers to the fact that the cancer cells don’t have estrogen or progesterone receptors, and don’t make any or too much of the protein called HER2. TNBC tends to be more common in women younger than age 40 and often grows and spreads faster than other types of breast cancer. Katie’s grandmother and great-grandmother both had breast cancer, but genetic testing showed Katie did not carry any genes that made her more likely to develop the disease. Through an IV, Katie received 3 rounds of chemotherapy called Adriamycin, which is considered one of the strongest chemotherapy drugs ever invented. With its bright red color, its nickname is the “Red Devil.” Because of her pregnancy, the only scan Katie could have was a chest CT. It showed a suspicious spot on her lung. But doctors couldn’t biopsy it because Katie was pregnant and the spot was too small. So, Katie endured her whole pregnancy not knowing if her cancer had spread behind her breast to Stage 4.
“Stage 2 I could handle, but Stage 4? I’m not sure,” she said. With a team approach to her care, Katie also saw Paul C. Browne, MD, FACOG, of Lexington Maternal Fetal Medicine at Lexington Medical Center. Dr. Browne specializes in high-risk pregnancy. Dr. Browne performed multiple ultrasounds during the pregnancy to make sure the baby was growing and explained to Katie the risks of the strong medicine she was taking to fight her cancer. He told her the chemotherapy could slow the baby’s growth. Thankfully, it did not. “He was ver y matter-of-fact and to the point,” Katie said. “But the way he cares for his patients made ever ything feel like it was going to be OK.”
“It was terrify-
SELF-BREAST HEALTH
As if those life-altering events weren’t enough, Katie had even more on her mind. Notably, she had first felt a lump in her breast before she was pregnant. At that time, a doctor ordered an ultrasound, but radiologists couldn’t see anything on it. It was only when she told Dr. Greene about it at six months pregnant when the lump was clearly growing that Dr. Greene ordered further evaluation. And that’s when another ultrasound caught it. “Most breast lesions in women in their 20s tend to be benign – non-cancerous,” said Dr. Greene. “But nonetheless, they can be anxiety provoking and we need to make sure young women have a health care provider they can approach and say, ‘This is something that’s new for me, something I found at home – and I need to know if this is something I need to be worried about.’” While most women don’t begin having mammograms until around age 40 and only seven percent of breast cancer cases occur in premenopausal women, Katie emphasizes being an advocate for your health. “Pay attention to your body and if you don’t have a doctor who advocates for you, find another one,” she said. “I was lucky to have doctors who took me seriously.” CONTINUED >

WELCOMING A NEW BABY Into her third trimester, all Katie wished for was a healthy baby. But at 33 weeks, she developed preeclampsia, a high blood pressure disorder that can occur during pregnancy. It can put stress on the heart and other organs, and impact the blood supply to the placenta.

FAM ILY CA R E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
At 35 weeks, doctors decided it was best to deliver Katie’s baby by c-section at Lexington Medical Center. Even though she arrived five weeks early and had endured strong chemotherapy while growing inside of her mother, baby Isla Feaster came roaring into the world as Lexington County’s newest resident on February 1, 2022, breathing on her own and perfectly healthy at 5 lb, 10 oz.
“She’s my miracle girl,” Katie said. “I want to be there to love her through everything and I want her to know this fight was for her.”
POSTPARTUM CANCER TREATMENT After Isla’s birth, Katie had a bone scan, full CT, mammogram, and another ultrasound. And that spot on her lung from the CT during her pregnancy? It had grown. A pulmonologist at Lexington Medical Center ordered a biopsy of it and the result was outstanding news – it was non-cancerous. Katie received four more rounds of chemotherapy after Isla’s birth and underwent a mastectomy. Currently, she takes oral chemotherapy as a preventative measure. And she’s going through the reconstruction process with a plastic surgeon. Because of the strong medication, Katie and her husband don’t know if they can have more children.
But her faith has never wavered. “It’s all up to God if we’ll have more children,” she said.
PAYING IT FORWARD Today, Katie is cancer free. With a thankful heart and tremendous faith, Katie is paying her experience forward. She started making what she calls “Chemo Bags.” They’re full of items that helped her when she was first diagnosed such as a devotional and jewelry from Kendra Scott. She gives them to women who reach out to her on her popular Facebook page, “Katie’s Kickin’ Cancer.” She also has a wish list for items for the bags on Amazon, receiving boxes full of donated items from there on her front porch each day. Katie has a message for other women from her experience. “The biggest thing is having doctors you trust. Advocate for that,” she said. “Keep your faith and believe nothing is impossible when God is in control. It may seem impossible at first, but it’s not. There is life after having cancer.” JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/LA KE M UR R AY

REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND PERSONAL TRAINER
GOOD MOOD FOODS FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Have you heard of the “Good Food, Good Mood” theory? Does food have the power to impact our mood? Researchers believe so…and anecdotally, I agree wholeheartedly. Recent evidence suggests that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate protein intake and probiotics can improve happiness and reduce stress.
INCREASED VEGETABLE INTAKE In 2021, a randomized control trial published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) suggested a diet rich in fruit and vegetables may exert a positive effect on psychological well-being. Oregonian adult men and women with habitually low vegetable intake were recruited to participate in an eight-week study. Subjects were split into two groups and their baseline Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) scores were established. The control group

continued their typical eating pattern, while the intervention group consumed at least two and half cups of vegetables, including a variety of dark-green, red-orange, beans and peas, and starchy vegetables daily. • An example of two and half cups of vegetables spread over the course of the day would be ½ cup of chickpeas with 1/2 cup of cucumber and tomato vinegar salad at lunch, ½ cup of carrots and hummus for an afternoon snack and 1 cup of roasted carrots, broccoli and sweet potato with dinner. At the end of the trial, the intervention group had greater mean SHS scores at week eight than at the start. No change in SHS scores were observed in the control group. The numerous of vegetables are well known. With this study in mind, I encouraged increased vegetable intake by reminding my clients that vegetables are an investment in our future happiness and well-being.
TRYPTOPHAN-CONTAINING FOODS You’ve probably heard of the neurotransmitter, Serotonin, before. It’s one of our “feel-good hormones” and it affects a variety of body functions: mood regulation, sleep quality, bowel regularity and sexual desire. If serotonin levels are low, you may experience anxiety, depression and digestive problems, among other symptoms. Tryptophan is the amino acid from which serotonin is made. Theoretically, we may be able increase serotonin by eating tryptophan-containing foods including, pumpkin seeds, chicken breast, salmon, white beans and whole oats. However, these foods will not boost serotonin alone. You’ll need to eat them
in combination with a source of carbohydrates. Scientists are still studying exactly how dietary tryptophan increases serotonin. • Try boosting serotonin with a snack of pumpkin seeds and unsweetened dried fruit and/or salmon with white beans and roasted Brussels sprouts
PROBIOTICS Numerous studies show that certain probiotic bacterial strains, specifically from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium family have the potential to influence the central nervous system and alleviate stress and anxiety in stressed adults. One theory suggests that as probiotics improve gut health, the gut-brain axis is positively affected. Another suggests that probiotics containing gamma-aminobutyric acid (or GABA, a neurotransmitter known for producing a calming affect) provide mental health benefits. But wait, before purchasing a probiotic supplement, try incorporating more fermented foods into your day. • Have plain Greek yogurt with your breakfast, add sauerkraut to a salad or sauté vegetables in soy sauce. For more information contact Susan at 803.603.1700 OR SUSANSULLIVANNUTRITION.COM JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
