Take Time to Give Thanks In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. Sunshine on a Ranney Day FROM ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS TO DREAM BEDROOMS AND THERAPY ROOMS, CHARITY MAKES LIFE EASIER FOR SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS.

For special needs children and their families, simple daily tasks are often clouded with frustration. The goal of one Metro Atlanta non-profit is to replace those clouds with sunshine. Spurred by a sermon, Peter and Holly Ranney were convicted to use their talents in construction and design to help special needs children. “Children with special needs just pulled at our heartstrings,” Holly said, adding that they felt these kids needed a special place in their homes. “Later, as we were in the homes more, we also realized accessible bathrooms were a huge need.” Their first makeover was a military-themed bedroom for an 11-year-old terminal brain tumor patient, who later passed away. The Ranney’s quickly learned how impactful these makeovers could be and the magnitude of the need. What had begun as a hobby became a full-fledged charity organization. SOARD was born in 2012, and within a few years, the couple left their jobs and committed to providing no-cost accessible bathrooms, dream bedrooms and therapy rooms to special needs children full time. To be considered for a makeover, families complete an application and submit a video showing why the makeover is needed. After recipients are chosen,

SOARD representatives meet with the families to develop design and function plans. Tradesmen and contractors do the work, which on average costs about $40,000. Donors and sponsors provide funding and materials. An annual gala and smaller fundraisers as well as profits from Sunny & Ranney Home Furnishings in Roswell, which sells donated décor and furniture, also help cover costs. SOARD has received regional and national recognition, including a spot on The Today Show, and has completed more than 140 makeovers. Special community projects have included parent sleep rooms at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Located in Roswell, SOARD plans to complete a makeover in each state by 2029.

FAYETTE COUNTY MAKEOVER RECIPIENTS Caleb Feather was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy, when he was 5. As he grew into a young adult, his parents, Lisa and Stephen Feather, found it increasingly difficult to get him in and out of the bathtub. They were selected as SOARD makeover recipients in 2018. Not only did the SOARD team complete a wheelchair-accessible bathroom for Caleb, but they also created his dream bedroom with a Clemson Tiger theme. “Caleb was literally speechless,” Lisa said. As helpful as the makeover was initially, it proved providential last year. Caleb developed an effusion around his heart and lungs that kept him in the ICU for 64 days and has left him adapting to life at home with a tracheotomy. Lisa said his room is now like a miniature ICU. Although the large Clemson Tiger paw print is still Caleb’s favorite makeover feature, other features such as the bins under his bed, have been invaluable for keeping medical equipment. “Everything they did was perfect then and now,” Lisa said. “They are an amazing organization.” Abby Pugh’s attic therapy room, completed in 2019, is a sensory wonderland featuring a hot-air balloon swing, a twirly slide and a ball pit courtesy of SOARD. Abby, 11, was born with a congenital neurological brain defect called partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and was later diagnosed with severe autism. “SOARD has made one of the biggest differences in our lives as a special needs family by providing us with an amazing therapy room for Abby,” her mother, Jennifer Conforti said. “She has improved both physically and developmentally as a result of having this space. Now, she has her own safe space where she can swing and slide and play independently.” Conforti appreciates not only what SOARD did for her family, but also what they do for others. “SOARD is such a blessing to special needs families,” she said. It’s a blessing the Ranneys feel as well. “We wake up every day feeling blessed,” Holly said. “We see firsthand what some of these families go through on a day-to-day basis. Many people take for granted how blessed we are to be able to wake up, roll out of bed, brush our teeth and take a shower on our own. Many of these kids cannot. a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around 20 bucks, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well.
