A DREAM KITCHEN on LAKE MURRAY
![]()
Welcome fall!
With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages around town. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the owners of Luzianna Purchase, and learned about what their fall menu will be boasting—so get your tastebuds ready, you are in for a treat. We also included a few new recipes for you to try at home, whether you’re cooking for just your family or for entertaining guests. The smells of fall bring memories to my mind of sitting in my mom’s kitchen, and the aroma of cinnamon, apple, pumpkin, chili and soups of any kind brings me right back to her table. There is definitely an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting.
Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable.
As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town!
PS- Special congratulations to our publisher, David, for winning two awards at the annual Lexington Chamber Awards Banquet Friday, August 25th. David graciously accepted Ambassador of the Year and the A. Layman Harman Volunteer of the Year award. We are so proud of his presence in the community. You may have heard that Luzianna Purchase just celebrated its second birthday! Whether you’re a repeat customer, or getting ready to try it for the first time, trust us when we say that you will not be disappointed! We got to talk with owners Thomas and Mary Katherine, and after just one conversation, you could tell that their passion for New Orleans culture, good food, and amazing service is unmatched. Read on to learn more about this little gem we are lucky to have in Lake Murray.
LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: TELL US ABOUT YOU! SHARE ABOUT YOUR RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE AND WHAT LED YOU TO OPENING LUZIANNA PURCHASE.
Thomas: I am originally from New Orleans. My dad ran several restaurants so
I grew up around the kitchen. I eventually left the area, joined a band, and toured the country for a while. Later, I settled back in SC and began cooking again, and realized how much I had missed it! I was executive chef at several Columbia restaurants as well as working in food sales. All of this led me to starting this restaurant with my wife because there wasn’t any Louisiana culture in SC for food.
Mary Katherine: I grew up in Virginia and eventually moved to SC and met Thomas. My background as an art teacher made me want to infuse that into the restaurant. That is where “Cypress Corner” was born. Part of the restaurant is a little shop where you can buy unique gifts, original art, and more. Luzianna Purchase is truly a place where we are able to bring our talents together.
LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ARE YOUR “GOTO” MENU RECOMMENDATIONS?
Thomas: I always recommend first-timers to get the shrimp po’ boy. It is our top seller. We also have the po beast, which is a 10-inch sandwich with shrimp, fried oysters, and crawfish. We only use authentic New Orleans bread and the highest quality ingredients.
LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHEF.
Thomas: Ben Griffin is our Head Chef. He was a former chef at several places in Columbia. He is from Irmo and lives locally with his family. We work together, cook together, and just get along perfectly. He’s been with us since we opened. We’re so thankful to have such a great staff and working environment.
LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS TO EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY VISIT LUZIANNA PURCHASE?
Thomas and Mary Katherine: We want to be a destination point for people. We are not trying to be a chain, just a unique, welcoming spot, that people want to come back to again and again. Some Louisiana locals have even said, “I feel like I’m at home,” which is just the best compliment!
LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR CATERING AND PRIVATE EVENTS.
Mary Katherine: We do lots of catering, small scale to large. We also make charcuterie boards which became really popular during a time when people were not dining out. Whether it be for a larger party, or tailgate, we can do it and deliver it to you.
Thomas: We also rent out our space after hours for dinners, showers, parties, etc. We will sit down with you and plan the get together you’d like to have-- sit down, buffet, etc. Menus are just guidelines, and we’re happy to go outside the box!
Luzianna Purchase is located at 7011 St. Andrews Rd. in the Murraywood Shopping Center. They are open Tuesday-Friday from 11:00-3:00 and Saturday from 10:00-1:00. Be sure to check out their Weekly Specials on the chalkboard inside. They also host ticketed events such as 5-course dinners, happy hours, and an annual crawfish boil in the spring. Don’t forget to purchase tickets for these mouth-watering events!

Miss Madeline | Newberry College
Newberry College is home to the infamous ghost of “Miss Madeline.” Originating from the 1959 student newspaper story, she was a Newberry local dating a Newberry College student named John. They were deeply in love until he learned of her infidelity and tragically jumped to his death from the Keller Hall steeple on November 17. Unaware of his passing, Madeline headed to confess her unfaithfulness but discovered his body on the way. She is rumored to return to campus every November 17, searching for John with her lantern.
Did you know that there are towns underneath the waters of Lake Murray? The dam’s construction nearly one hundred years ago led to the relocation of descendants from German, Dutch, and Swiss settlers of the 1700s. Despite efforts for smooth relocation, significant parts of their lives, such as churches, schools, and homes, were abandoned. There are over 2,300 graves that lie beneath Lake Murray’s waters, as well as the Wyse Ferry Bridge.

Food is exciting to cook, and satisfying to eat but is it enjoyable to read? Novels where food is prominently featured can be a veritable feast for the eyes. Food imagery, also called gustatory imagery, adds depth to a novel, providing a springboard for all kinds of descriptive and symbolic language. Different dishes can transport a reader to new regions of the world, reveal a character’s culture, or symbolically deepen the meaning of a text. So, dive into this list of autumn reads and don’t forget to save room for seconds.

True crime fans and foodies alike will enjoy this beautifully written novel. The novel follows a Vancouver based chef, Jeremy Papier and his failing bistro. As Papier tries to hold his dreams together, his homeless father drags him into a real-life, 1940’s “cold case” investigation. The novel mindfully uses the investigation as well as Papier’s commitment to locally grown foods to pay tribute to Vancouver’s landscape and history.
Love is in the air at this Monday night cooking school. The novel follows a cast of hapless students as they are instructed in both the kitchen and in life by the school’s owner, Lillian. Lillian is the group’s fairy godmother as she hands out morsels of advice and challenges the students with advanced recipes. A cozy read, be prepared to fall in love with the decadence of the school’s dishes as well as the sweet message that lingers long after you put down the book.

Published after his untimely death, A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s memoir. A love letter to 1920’s Paris and the literary movement, Hemingway charters the reader through his early years there, one cafe at a time. Along the way, familiar characters like Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald float in and out. This no-frills prose will stick to your ribs and leave you satisfied.
by Ferrett Steinmetz
If you love science fiction, this big-hearted, culinary space opera is sure to hit the spot. The story follows impoverished Kenna, an aspiring guru who hungrily wanders the cosmos until he wins dinner at the galaxy’s most renowned restaurant, The Sol Majestic. A novel that is both fun and thought provoking, Steinmetz uses striking food imagery to explore what truly excites the spirit.
Apples are the trademark fruit of fall, and with the many varieties to choose from, there is an apple that is sure to please any palate. They can be included in both sweet and savory dishes and are delicious and incredibly healthful. We all have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While they aren’t a cureall, apples are packed full of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C, B vitamins and fiber. Make the most of autumn’s best produce and the flavors of fall with these simple recipes.
Easier than pie but with all the same textures, this gooey warm dessert is sure to please. For simplicity, this can be made with a premade crust.
Crust:
• 1 1/2 cups flour
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
• 1/4 cup iced cold water
Filling:
• 2 apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices
• 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
• 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• Caramel sauce
• Optional: 1/4 chopped walnuts or pecans
Crust:
(Note: If running short on time, store bought crust works great, too.)
Mix flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add water and mix until moistened. Lightly knead the dough and then form into a ball. Next, flatten dough into a thick circular form and refrigerate for one hour.
Filling:
Mix the apples, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar together in a bowl.
Assemble and Bake:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a circle and set on parchment paper. Arrange apples in center of dough, leaving about one inch of space for the edges. Fold crust over the apples and press to seal edges. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with pecans or walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes. Serve with caramel sauce and ice-cream.

At Lexington Medical Heart and Vascular Center, we’re proud to receive three-star ratings for heart surgery once again — the highest measure of quality awarded by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
We’re honored to be recognized for our patient care and outcomes in three types of heart surgery: aortic valve replacement, coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve replacement and repair. Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the country earn this elite distinction, and we’re proud to be the only South Carolina hospital included among them.
At Lexington Medical Heart and Vascular Center, we renew lives every day. And our quality ratings mean you can get the best heart care in the nation — right here at home.
