Happy Fourth of July! I hope to see you this holiday weekend on the Lake, and especially on Saturday for the fireworks presented by our friends at Capital City / Lake Murray Country. Back in April I told you about my plans to OVER THE EDGE for a good cause. On Saturday, May 14th, more than 70 people did just that - all to raise money for Lighthouse for Life. Thousands of people watched from below as participants repelled down the side of The Hub and raised $50,000 for charity. Check out the event pictures in this issue. This month, I am excited to introduce you to Michael and D’Lynn Curcio of CMS Roofing. Through their business, these two are dedicated to having a community impact for first responders and members of the military. Read more about their tremendous plans. “Your Roof is Our Reputation.” And summer adventures should be on everyone’s list for July. Outdoor Classroom to Serve as Memorial for Kennedy’s mom Lou Kennedy, CEO of Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp (in sunglasses) and students at Seven Oaks

Elementary School during the dedication of an outdoor classroom in honor of Kennedy’s mother, Nancy Thomas Wood, a lontime teacher at the school who passed away last summer. In 2019, Kennedy launched Nephron’s educator outreach program, which employs teachers looking to make extra money on a part-time basis. The teachers work around their classroom schedules and responsibilities while pocketing $21 an hour.

Sorinex Plans Expansion An exercise equipment manufacturing company is making a multi-million dollar expansion to its Lexington County operation, according to South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s office. Sorinex Exercise Equipment, Inc., announced plans to invest $7 million and create 35 jobs as part of the expansion, the governor’s office said Thursday in a news release. The family-owned strength training equipment company has specialized in creating custom exercise gear and workout apparel for more than 40 years, according to the release.

Have you visited the Lake Murray Country Visitor Center? The Lake Murray Country Visitors Center, the white plantation house on the Irmo side of the Lake Murray Dam, is the regional tourism office and visitor’s center promoting Columbia, Lake Murray and it’s four surrounding counties (Lexington, Richland, Newberry and Saluda). The visitor center is located inside the Historic Lorick Plantation Home, a survivor of the Civil War and built in the 1840’s. The home was donated to the organization in 1994 by the Love family and moved to its current location from 6251 St. Andrews Road. The procession took seven hours to go the distance along Old Bush River Road to the present location on North Lake Drive. The 34-foot wide structure was moved in one piece and was surprisingly not cut in half. The center and staff provide information and brochures on the region’s attractions, hotels, events, dining

options, recreation, relocation and much more. In addition, the visitor center is home to the Lake Murray Souvenir Shop. The shop has a great selection of Lake Murray and South Carolina items. So, stop and shop here. The hours are Monday-Friday, (9am-4:30pm), Saturday (10am-2pm) Sunday (11am-2pm). Capital City/Lake Murray Country produces an annual Visit magazine and regional map, which are the official tourism marketing pieces for the region. They are distributed to travelers, potential visitors and individuals looking for relocation and retirement information and are also available at all of the South Carolina Welcome Centers. With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers and cross-country skiers. The park isn’t a canyon; it’s a natural amphitheater carved into the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce Canyon’s extreme altitude offers stunning panoramic views of three states, and its minimal exposure to light pollution offers premium stargazing opportunities.

5. GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Named after the remnants of glaciers formed during the ice age, this natural wonderland spans more than 1 million acres and boasts two mountain ranges. Visitors will also find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above

Jenny Lake offers fishing, boating, paddling and swimming. This scenic spot also attracts photographers and artists looking to capture its natural beauty. Experienced climbers can summit the 13,770-foot Grand Teton, and long-distance hikers can take the Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon Loop for impressive views of it. 9. ARCHES NATIONAL PARK Yet another otherworldly destination in Utah is Arches National Park, defined by its natural sandstone arches, stunning red rocks and beautiful colors. The park has the largest concentration of natural arches in the world, which attracts photographers who capture the mesmerizing shadows at dawn and dusk. Hikers can take advantage of Arches National Park’s numerous trails ranging from short hikes to Balanced Rock and the Double Arch to more strenuous routes through the Fiery Furnace and up to the Delicate Arch. The park boasts North America’s longest arch, the Landscape Arch, spanning 306 feet. Don’t miss the Windows Section, which has some of the largest arches in the park, including North Window, South Window and Turret Arch.

10. HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK To visit one of the country’s best national parks, journey to Maui’s Haleakala National Park. The name of this national park translates to “House of the Sun.” Legend goes that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood at the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the days last longer. The Haleakala Crater is a dormant volcano that sits at 10,000 feet above sea level, and visitors flock to this location to view one of the most spectacular sunrises on Earth.
