LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Mother’s Day! Truly, I love any opportunity to celebrate mothers - the mothers in my world and the mothers in our community. On the home front, I am celebrating Cheryle, my wife, the mother of our three children, Zachary, Alexandra and Victoria, and now the grandmother of our two grandchildren (Thomas Henry and Callahan Ann). In my business world, I’m celebrating our editor, Shannon Barghols. She’s the mother of three children - Grayson, Cooper, and Delaney. And in our community, I’m celebrating lots of mothers! But, specifically in this month’s issue, we’re celebrating Jayne Baker, Stephanie Copple, Nan Rikard, Misty Stathos, and Sarah Williams. They grace our cover and their stories of motherhood and business fill our pages. This month’s issue also features a unique perspective on Greenville, SC. When’s the last time you’ve visited this city? The month of May seems like a perfect time! And if you’re looking for other ideas for getting out and about, take a peek at our Events page! Plus, it’s sailing season and the Columbia Sailing Club has lots of options to get you on the water. So many ideas … so little time! As always, don’t forget to follow us on CityLifestyle.com, “Your Destination for Local Living” as well as on Instagram @lakemurraylifestyle.

EXCITEMENT IS IN THE AIR: SAILING LESSONS, ADVENTURE SAILING, SAILING SUMMER CAMP, AND A SAILING RACE TEAM!

Club

As a sport, sailing is extremely unique in its combination of individual skill and team-oriented practice. It’s a sport that builds skills for life applications: confidence, independence, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Learning to sail can be a life-long adventure that can take sailors, exploring and racing, all over the world. CSC offers sessions for all experience levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Participants do not have to own their own boat and you don’t have to be a CSC member to join the fun. The organization has well-trained, US Sailing-certified instructors and coaches, well-kept, club-owned boats, and detailed safety protocols. Our sailors are also required to wear well-fitting PFDs at all times, regardless of their swimming ability. Lake Murray is such an amazing asset to the Midlands area, and one of the only places in South Carolina that youth have the opportunity to sail as a hobby and as an organized sport! Sailing Summer Camp is almost here and registration is open on the CSC website: bit.ly/CSC-Summer-Sailing-Program 292 Shuler Rd, Columbia, SC www.columbiasailingclub.org

MOTHERHOOD CHANGES YOUR PERSPECTIVE MISTY STATHOS EMBRACES MOTHERHOOD WHILE BUILDING HER STATE FARM AGENCY.

O UR TOWN | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S

Misty Stathos began her career with State Farm in 2001 when she was hired as a Fire Underwriter. In 2009, she opened her State Farm agency in Lexington. Since then, she’s been involved in a variety of community and charitable activities. She currently serves on the Lexington Chamber Board of Directors. She sponsors a variety of local sports teams,

MIST Y STATHOS

supports local schools in numerous ways, and provides charitable support to The Ronald McDonald House of Columbia, M.A.D.D., Pacing for Pieces, and Hope Gala. Misty became a mother in June of 2012 with the birth of her daughter, Catherine Anne. She was 33 at the time and notes that most of her friends already had children, most of whom were well into grade school by that point. Misty admits that waiting to have children was one of the decisions that came along with owning a business. In the early years of establishing her State Farm office, she worked long hours and couldn’t imagine being an attentive mom while running a business. After her third year in business, she found her groove. She and her husband, George, decided it was time to have a child. She says, “People always tell you that becoming a mother changes your life, and that is true. But it also completely changes your perspective.” In an instant, Misty felt like Catherine Anne was the most important part of her life. Misty treasured her time at home with Catherine Anne, but definitely felt the pull of her business obligations. She remembers, “It was a strange time where I felt guilty when I was at work for being away from my child and then felt guilty when I was home for being away from the office.” Many mothers can relate! Misty focused her newfound perspective and worked hard to find the balance she needed. That focus and work paid off. And when Catherine Anne was two, Misty and George decided that they would love for her to have a sibling. After four years of trying and eventually undergoing IVF, the Stathos’ welcomed a son, Eli, into the world. As expected, the balance shifted once again. Misty took the time and made the effort to find the balance between running a business and being a fantastic wife and mother. She’s learned some important lessons along the way, including: There is no such thing as a “perfect” mother or a “perfect” child. She offers this advice, “You have to learn to forgive yourself and laugh at yourself daily. You have to be intentional about the time you spend with your children and the quality of that time.” For Misty, motherhood is a blessing and a choice. Every day she chooses to put the happiness and well-being of Catherine Anne and Eli ahead of her own. And she wouldn’t have it any other way!

Nurture & Grow NAN RIKARD’S MISSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO NURTURE & GROW THE MINDS OF CHILDREN

ARTICLE EDITED BY SHANNON BARGHOLS

H OW TO | ED U CATION

Nan Rikard, Founder of Big Blue Marble Academy, grew up in Gilbert, SC. Her nurturing spirit came from her upbringing, as her grandparents, as well as her parents and their siblings started and operated Rikard’s Nursing Home in Lexington, which later became Lexington Extended Care. She has fond memories of spending summers and afterschool at the nursing home, visiting and interacting with the residents. As a young girl, her interest in the world began when she watched a show called The Big Blue Marble—a weekly children’s show that explored the lives, homes and cultures of children around the world and recalls having pen pals all throughout her childhood. As an adult, Nan and her family have hosted several children from orphanages as well as exchange students from Eastern Europe. During her career in Early Childhood Education, after having three children of her own, Taylor, Collin and Gena, she knew she wanted to create something that would expose them to world language, provide cultural understanding and awareness and focus on giving back to their community. With her children in mind, she created Big Blue Marble Academy in 2012.

In 2014, Nan experienced an unexpected calling, when she and her family hosted a 7-year-old orphan from Latvia. After multiple visits, they quickly knew that this little girl should be a part of their family. In 2017, after three years of the complexities involved in international adoption, Vladi officially became a member of their family. All four of her children share that same passion for language, cultural awareness and giving back. What started as Big Blue Marble Academy in a 100-year-old house in Gilbert has since grown to 45 locations all over the southeast. Living by its mission to Nurture Little Minds and Grow Big Hearts, Big Blue Marble Academy has grown and adapted over the last decade to provide a robust preschool curriculum that helps ensure children are cognitively, socially, and emotionally prepared for kindergarten and beyond. Inspired by Nan’s upbringing, Big Blue Marble Academy’s hands-on Heart Projects, an innovative program implemented in all of its schools, teach children the importance of giving back, which prepares them to become compassionate members of their community, country and world. Nan is proud of what Big Blue Marble Academy has grown into and looks forward to serving the next generation, as she now has a one-year-old grandson. MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . SAILING AWAY ARTICLE EDITED BY SHANNON BARGHOLS

LIFE WITH STEPHANIE COPPLE AND FAMILY

Stephanie comes from a long line of passionate and determined women. That heritage has provided the inspiration she’s needed to pursue her dreams. Passion and determination helped her to rise to the position of DHEC’s Art & Photography Director. After some time in these roles, Stephanie and a business partner started a design consultancy business on the side. Stephanie was determined to see it grow. Around the same time, Stephanie and her husband, Chris, were thrilled to learn that they were going to have a child. With the birth of her first son, Stephanie realized that she wanted to commit her passion to motherhood. She no longer wanted to hold two jobs and raise a child, so she resigned from the state to focus on family and personal business. As you might imagine, being a creative person and a mom leads to fun art projects! If either of Stephanie’s boys want to do an art project, she readily has the materials. Even if they want to paint on a window ... that’s ok! A little Windex will take it right off when the afternoon of fun is finished. Through the years, Stephanie has been able to see the boys’ growth through their collection of hand and footprint art! They enjoy making painted holiday cards for family members, who proudly display them! Stephanie is also able to guide her children to pay attention to the details in life, particularly nature. Noticing the colors, textures, smells begin building their awareness of the world and their creative knowledge. Stephanie shares, “Seeing how my boys process the world is a joy and often hilarious as they piece together bits and pieces and how they relate things that may or may not really go together! I am continually grateful that God gave me two spirited and awesome boys!” Stephanie and Chris love going on adventures with their boys. Sailing is a family favorite. They have taken

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

several ASA courses and Stephanie has a goal of one day earning her Captain’s License. They take the boys on their keel boat and teach them the fundamentals of sailing and even let them take the helm and help trim the sails. Their oldest son is excited to finally be old enough for the full week of sailing summer camp! The sailing club has openly welcomed the Copple family and has encouraged their sailing passion and dream - one day living aboard a catamaran and sailing the world. For Stephanie, the rewarding, and sometimes frustrating, part of being a mom is seeing glimpses of herself in her children. The boys are passionate about their main job, playing and having fun! She can readily see her own determination and passion in them, which sometimes manifests as obstinance when they don’t want to do something they’re told. Isn’t that always the case with children! One of their favorite games in the car is telling and making up jokes, which the boys lovingly refer to as “Dad Jokes!” And while Stephanie shares her passion for specific hobbies, she also adores seeing her children develop their own interests and try new activities and sports that they are excited about learning. Stephanie’s design business - black&hue - has been a wonderful way to meet a variety of clients, who often become friends! She thoroughly enjoys her work, and enjoying what she does is critical to her being fulfilled and joyful. The ability to adjust her schedule so that she can be present and enjoy her family and being a mom in addition to pursuing my professional passions is an added bonus. “I AM CONTINUALLY GRATEFUL THAT GOD GAVE ME TWO SPIRITED AND AWESOME BOYS!” — Stephanie Copple

Extended Bragging Rights JAYNE BAKER IS ONE PROUD MOTHER AT HOME AND AT WORK Jayne is the Vice President of Public Relations and Communications at the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Office. She has been with the organization for 20 years. Enjoys telling visitors and people considering relocating why they should visit and fall in love with the Lake Murray Country region. One of her favorite tasks is hosting and showing off the area to travel writers. In most instances, the writers have never visited this part of South Carolina and she is the first person they meet. It matters what their impression is, and she carefully plans every aspect of their trip. Sometimes that outing lasts several days. Her Southern hospitality makes them feel right at home making it easy for them to fall in love with all that Lake Murray Country offers. Speaking of home, she uses her communication skills there too. She is constantly reminding her three kids to work hard, use their personalities and be kind. These are her mottos for them. Her kids often make fun of her… saying that I talk to everyone. Well, we believe it has served her well. She does love to talk, is genuine and kind to everyone, and teaches her kids to do the same. We know they will thank her later.

CULTIVATING A HOME SARAH WILLIAMS BRINGS HOME COASTAL SOUTHERN CHARM Sarah Williams has been cultivating beautiful spaces for years. Although she studied advertising and fashion merchandising at the University of South Carolina, Sarah landed in the pharmaceutical industry after college. The fast pace and hectic atmosphere of this industry found her craving a space to rest and relax at the end of each day. She made quick work of cultivating her own home to provide the calm,

rest, and beauty she needed. Over the next decade, she helped friends and family members cultivate similar spaces within their own homes. In January 2020, Sarah left the world of pharmaceuticals and founded Locke Interior Design. From the outset, her mission has been to create beautiful, functional spaces. Her coastal southern style places an emphasis on simplicity,

banishing clutter and chaos. Her signature looks are light and airy with a few pops of color. To her career, Sarah has always brought a strong work ethic instilled in her by her mother. Within the pharmaceutical industry, this served her well. Her ability to drive goals while providing exemplary customer service resulted in multiple awards within the corporate world. The success was rewarding. However, two key attributes were missing: balance and passion. With Locke Interiors, Sarah is able to create

a balance between career and motherhood. Her children - Banks and Locke - are the beneficiaries of that balance. Locke Interiors also provides a platform for Sarah’s passion, which is creating beautiful spaces for families to enjoy together. It’s a win-win for everyone! Sarah’s design studio is located at 208 W. Main Street in Lexington, where she has recently added a retail shop for home decor and gifts. Visit with her by appointment only. On the internet, find her at LockeInteriorDesign.com.
