It’s the month for being generous - with our time, our thanks, and our resources. My first priority each November is to celebrate Veteran’s Day. I am so proud of our son, Major Zachary Hayth and our son in law Lt. Brian Hill for their service to our country. MARYLAND CONGRESSMAN DAVID TRONE GIVES IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Philanthropy is a driving force in the world of Congressman David Trone. Through his family foundation, his company, and his work in Congress, Trone’s objectives are always the same: mental health, addiction, medical research, and social justice.

TRONE’S FAMILY FOUNDATION Trone earned a B.A. from Furman University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1977, and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. David met June at Wharton, where she also earned an M.B.A. The Trones live in Potomac, Maryland, and are the parents of four children. The family foundation was established in 2011.

TRONE’S BUSINESS Trone started Total Wine & More in 1991. It has grown to 245 stores in 27 states, and is the largest private wine retailer in the country. With more than 12,000 employees and sales of $5.5 billion, the opportunity to encourage philanthropy is tremendous. In 2021 alone, Total Wine & More donated more than $9 million in monetary and in-kind donations to over 13,000 non-profits in 29 states, helping those charities raise more than $60 million for their organizations’ good works.

FURMAN UNIVERSITY “As a proud alumnus of Furman University, I am honored by the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way on an issue of great personal importance,” said Trone earlier this year. The $10 million donation will impact three areas: Trone Center for Mental Fitness, Trone Family Fund for Student Mental Health and Well-Being, and the Hillel Endowment Fund. A hot-springs vacation to Europe has it all: history, health, wellness, adventure, luxury, character, nature, relaxation and beauty.

Europeans call it “taking the waters.” The rest of us should call it the “No. 1 travel bucket list to-do.” We’re talking about a visit to a European thermal town. A hot-springs vacation to Europe has it all: history, health, wellness, adventure, luxury, character, nature, relaxation and beauty. These magical spa town destinations – flawlessly blending architecture, nature, health and tradition – are centered around naturally occurring healing springs. Since ancient times, people have been drawn to the thermal waters of Europe. Over time, these destinations have evolved into welcoming spa towns. These towns were Europe’s first major tourist destinations, and they boast centuries-old hospitable traditions. The luxury hotels, grand theaters and casinos, lively festivals, and lush gardens all complement the “thermal architecture,” which houses the healing waters. These towns know how to relax and enjoy life. They’re also known as foodie destinations with sommelier-approved wine. The plan for my thermal town journey last summer was to go back in time and see the appeal of these secluded, historic towns. What has drawn so many visitors since Roman times? I hoped to find out – and experience the same restorative powers of the waters for myself. Following my experience, here are five tips to bring this dream European vacation to life. If you are worried about crowds of tourists, these wellness wonders of Europe are largely stress- and crowd-free.

1. HOP BETWEEN SPA TOWNS. Tour the European Route of Historic Thermal Towns, one of the 48 Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. It’s convenient to travel between these destinations, as many tend to have train connections, close proximity to major airports and plenty of lodging options.

Many of the Great Spa Towns highlights can be found in France and Germany. I started my journey in the suburbs of Paris at the Enghien Les Bains. Stay at the intimate Le Grand Hotel, with Baroque-style decor, private lake, health spa, and calm thermal baths. Our next lodging was the Hotel Royal Saint Mart, where we enjoyed some of our best french meals with local cheese and wine. Then head to the Route des Villes d’Eaux du Massif, tucked high in the mountains of the Massif Central. This is where you’ll discover the Royat-Chamalières spa resort; experience water pavilions built around thermal water mineral springs that used to be worshiped by the Gallo-Romans for their health benefits. Royat has been a wellness mecca since Roman times. Our day in the Royatonic Spa felt like a life elixir. Each area of hydro-wellness enlightened my body, mind and spirit. Then there’s Vichy, France, one of the best-known spa towns in Europe and a must-visit. Stay at the fivestar Vichy Celestins Spa Hotel, which is connected to the largest medical thermal spa in Europe. All rooms are elegant and comfortable, overlooking the park, lake or the spa. This spa, founded in 1853, employs a multidisciplinary medical team to advise you on your treatments. I experienced a traditional Vichy shower treatment, and a four-hand massage. This emblematic Vichy treatment is carried out by two spa practitioners. The massage is perfectly synchronized under a thermal water shower that’s rich in minerals. 2. WITNESS THE ARCHITECTURE. These towns on the scenic European Route of Historic Thermal Towns are built around thermal and mineral springs. Some date back to ancient Roman times. Take some time to check out the incredible historic remains and architecture. Spa towns are distinguishable by their bathhouses, pump rooms, “source halls,’’ colonnades and drinking halls, so you can not only bathe in the waters, but in some cases, you can drink it, too. Many of these buildings are incredibly ornate, originally built to attract and impress dignitaries and royalty. The associated villas and hotels boast the same level of architectural detailing and craftsmanship. The ineffable, natural beauty of some of the spa facilities is indescribable and beyond words. One stand-out for architecture was the Henkell-Freixenet Sparkling Wine historic cellars in Wiesbaden, which has been making life sparkle since 1856. This is one of the world’s finest wineries that produces those delightful bubbles. Take a guided tour if you can. I marveled at the magnificent marble interiors, then headed down to see the seven subterranean floor wine cellar. We also got to see the impressive production facilities. Every tour of the winery closes with a sparkling wine tasting. Of course, we left with a few bottles to take home. As many of us share our holidays and tables with our loved ones, many former military veterans do not have the same happy times with family. Without clear purposes, thousands of veterans face many overwhelming mental challenges transitioning out of intense combat environments into society’s typical communities. Every day, more than 20 of those American veterans are lost to suicide. Supporters of one nonprofit, Mission 22, wants that number to be zero. Veteran Jonathan Clarke of Chapin says he found the strength within Mission 22 programs to fight his post-war demons. “When you take away a soldier’s purpose, camaraderie and support system, and replace all that with only anxiety pills, it’s dangerous. Those important elements are all soldiers know work-wise,” he explains. Jonathan served in the military from 1994-2016, with three combat tours in Iraq. When he received a medical discharge due to his combat injuries, he sought assistance at a Veterans Administration hospital. But he says he needed more than to be given medicine and sent home. “For starters, I needed a reason to get out of bed each day,” he recalls. He says inconsistencies with operators in VA Suicide Hotlines can lead to lack of true understanding or assistance, right when veterans need it most. When Jonathan learned about Mission 22, he realized he wasn’t alone in fighting his mental demons. He also believed that VA hotlines were not enough to combat suicide among vets.

Today, he promotes Mission 22 to the point that he includes contact information about the organization on the back of his personal rental company’s business cards, so it prompts conversations. “If more civilians realize what veterans are going through and what they need, they will better know what to look out for regarding veterans that need assistance with suicidal thoughts,” he says. Serving warriors and their families since 2013, Mission 22 ambassadors are dedicated to healing America’s veterans by providing treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, substance abuse and all of the issues veterans are facing today. Mission 22 assists veterans through three main programs: veteran treatment programs, memorials and national awareness. The group serves combat veterans, those injured in training who therefore could not deploy and victims of military sexual trauma. The group’s ambassador volunteers educate the public on veteran issues, help get veterans into Mission 22 treatment programs and create resources in their communities. THIS BOOK IS ABOUT CELEBRATING ‘EVERYDAY EXPERIENCES.’ IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF A CLOSE FRIEND WHO IS DOING THIS WELL? I am surrounded by a circle of great friends who also grew up with me in Columbia. We spent nearly every weekend on Lake Murray having a blast and sharing our hopes and dreams for the future. Now, 25 years later, we are still friends and teaching these messages now to our children. We want our “little ones” to grow into happy, healthy and wise adults.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ‘EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE’ FROM THE BOOK? I love the dance party scene because my daughter and I do this often. We turn our home into a musical parade honoring and celebrating her life and the enjoyment of being together.

WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA? I miss my family, southern hospitality, the Gamecocks, sweet tea, Rush’s cheeseburgers, my grandparents, the lake (Lake Murray - where I learned to water ski), the churches and homemade, southern cooking.

Lake Murray Lifestyle had one more opportunity to chat with Ainsley Earhardt about her new book and growing up in South Carolina. Here’s what we learned:

WHY THIS BOOK? WHY NOW? The idea for my latest book, “I’m So Glad You Were Born,” came to me years ago. When I was a child, my mother always said (on my birthday), “I’m so glad you were born”. As I grew older, I began saying it to friends and family. One morning, while anchoring Fox And Friends, one of my co-anchors was celebrating his birthday and I said, “I’m glad you were born.” At first, the crew laughed. Then, those words sank in, they were shocked and the phrase stuck. It became my common response to birthday celebrations on Fox and Friends. Then, four and a half years ago, my mother suffered a stroke. She has a challenging life and I wanted to write this book to honor her.

When we were in high school, several friends had boats and lake houses. We would go up to the lake each weekend and spend hours on the water. As the sun set, we would tie our boats together, listen to music and spend time laughing and sharing stories. My grandparents also lived on the lake and my Dad’s father, Lewie Earhardt, had a few fishing tackle boxes. I would organize the colored, faux, bait worms in the tackle box and play with the fishing line. My aunt and uncle, Linda and Griff Earhardt, lived on Lake Murray too. We spent Christmas’ together, had cookouts and long cruises on the lake at night in their boat. My precious, Uncle Griff died from cancer in that house on the lake and I remember visiting with him a few days before he took his last breath. He also grew up on the lake, considered it a special place and met Jesus in that home — right there on the banks of Lake Murray. He grew up there and died there. What a very speical body of water. Thank you, Lake Murray, for all the memories.
