Ainsley Earhardt is a morning staple in many homes throughout The Midlands. I truly believe that will make this world a better place.” Ainsley’s ties to family and religion run deep and bind her to South Carolina. She was born in Charlotte and spent her earliest years in Spartanburg. She moved to Columbia in the fourth grade, and claims the city as her hometown. Her father grew up in Earlewood Park; her mother attended Columbia College. She is named after her great uncle Ainsley, a member of the Ainsley family that owned Ainsley Hall. The mansion was designed by Robert Mills and is also known as the Robert Mills House in downtown Columbia’s historic district. She graduated from Spring Valley High School and the University of South Carolina’s College of Journalism. Despite career moves that have taken her to Texas and New York, she continues to spend summer vacations and Christmas holidays on the South Carolina Coast. AGING IN PLACE What does it mean and how do I do it well?

Aging in place is when a person lives and ages in his/ her residence of choice, for as long as feasibly possible. Obviously, this looks different for each person. Ideally, aging in place involves addressing the health, social and emotional needs of an elderly person in order to help him/her maintain a well-rounded life. The main benefits of remaining at home are the sense of belonging, familiarity, and security. Modern conveniences support aging in place like never before. Today, services are simply delivered directly to and within the home - including home health, home care, physician services, hospice, barbers & hairdressers, podiatrists, and X-rays. There’s even prescription and grocery delivery! Still, certain physical, mental and emotional changes are inevitable: diminished eyesight and hearing capacity, less strength and endurance, increased risk of accidents, challenges with basic hygiene, safety concerns, anxiety, confusion, and loneliness. Planning for these changes ahead of time ensures that aging in place is more likely to be a viable option. When more help is needed, in-home care may provide the perfect solution. In-home care provides flexible solutions to address individual concerns. Companionship care covers aspects such as conversation and emotional support, social activities, safety monitoring, meal prep, and light housekeeping. After the first half of 2022, the financial markets were solidly in bear territory, with the S&P tracking for the worst start in 50 years. Suddenly, people were looking at their 401K plan balances and worrying that their financial plans were insufficient. Like so many, Ron Pereira came to South Carolina to attend college and quickly discovered the ever-evolving food scene. After graduating from the College of Charleston, he worked with several Charleston restaurant groups before moving into the food supply chain arena with Sysco Food Services. There, he was awarded internationally for developing creative marketing and procurement initiatives. In early 2020, he set about bringing his vision for food, employment, and philanthropy to The Midlands. The vision manifested as Happy Fork Hospitality Group, and quickly grew to include Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe, Chapin Sports Bar, Modern Fresco, Deca Dessert Bar, Bakon Southern Eatery, and Chophouse of Chapin. “My goal was to cultivate a small group of passionate foodies,” Pereira says of his earliest days. Despite rapid growth, he continues to look for people with passion, experience, dedication, and a love of amazing food. His most recent find is Christopher Holme, who now serves as the Executive Chef at Chophouse of Chapin. For Christopher, becoming the Executive Chef at Chophouse is a homecoming of sorts. He grew up in Chapin. He attended the

University of South Carolina, and even played tuba in the marching band! Somewhere along the way, he realized that cooking could serve as a profession and he began cultivating his craft at the Culinary Institute of Charleston. From there, he spent ten years under the tutelage of Frank Lee and Russ Moore at Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) in Charleston. His move home to Chapin coincided nicely with Happy Fork’s growth, and gave him the opportunity to share his talents on a new stage. The menu at Chophouse of Chapin centers around top-quality Angus beef, specifically a signature Tallow steak. According to Chef Christopher, tallow is the process of coating the beef with hand-churned beef butter, then hand-cutting the steaks after 60 days of aging. This process increases the overall flavor and tenderness, delivering perfection. Steaks are further elevated by any of the housemade sauces: chimichurri, horseradish-rosemary cream, brandy-thyme jus, Chophouse steak sauce, or maitre d’butter. Yet, these dishes are also elevated to the level you would expect from any upscale chophouse. Favorites include Brisket Candy, New Orleans BBQ Shrimp & Grits, Grilled Watermelon Salad, and Charred Okra. This fall, look forward to pears, butternut squash, and collard greens. Chef Christopher is also pleased to continue the special events that have become crowd favorites at Chophouse. The first is Happy Hour, which is offered 7 days a week. From 4pm until 6pm, enjoy 1/2 priced bottles of wines and 1/2 off craft drafts. Coming on October 11th, patrons will have the opportunity to attend Women in Whiskey. In partnership with Breakthru Beverage, Chophouse will host a dinner featuring Kentucky whiskeys from distilleries owned by women or distilleries featuring women as master distillers. Featured whiskeys include: Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey, The Glendronach 12-YearOld Original, Coopers' Craft Barrel Reserve, Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky, and Jack Daniel's Single Barrel. The whiskeys will be paired with a delicious four-course dinner prepared by Executive Chef Christopher Holme and the Chophouse Culinary Team. In August Capital City/Lake Murray Country (CCLMC) Regional Tourism Board held its Annual Meeting. The meeting provided an opportunity for the tourism community and our political allies to learn what the organization accomplished this past fiscal year in promoting tourism and economic development in Richland, Lexington, Newberry, and Saluda counties. “The organization has proudly adopted the TOP SOUTHERN DESTINATION title (awarded by Forbes and Food & Travel, 2021). “We are thankful for this distinguished recognition and are implementing it throughout our marketing efforts” said Miriam Atria, CCLMC President/CEO.

NOTABLE STATS FOR THE 2021-22 YEAR INCLUDE: • $816,000+ of marketing investment; • This investment represents 46% of the organization’s budget and is an 8% budget increase over the previous year; and • 296 articles were published resulting in 24 billion media impressions that contributed over $225 million dollars of marketing value. “CCLMC hosted several film crews this year. From SCETV, which filmed in Eastover during the Ag+Art Tour, to “The Excursion Show” which showcased the four-county region and filmed two, 30-minute episodes. We also welcomed a PBS show that traversed our state visiting SC Revolutionary War sites, this show is set to premiere soon, so look for our announcement!” said Atria. The new television ad which will be utilized by the organization to promote the region was shared with the attendees. The ad promotes all the outdoor recreation aspects of the region to potential visitors and will air all across the U.S.

Making homes safer so seniors can continue to live independently. #1: ELIMINATE FALL HAZARDS IN THE HOME Falls are one of the biggest safety threats to seniors. Remove slippery area rugs and install grab bars in the shower and tub. Plus, install extra lighting throughout the home and place anti-slip adhesive stair treads and a sturdy railing at each staircase.

#2: IMPROVE BATHROOM SAFETY Add grab bars and skid-proof mats; install a nightlight to help nighttime navigation; and lower water heater to 120 degrees or below to prevent scalding.

#3: KEEP THE KITCHEN SAFE Install more overhead lighting, clear up clutter, clearly mark the “on” and “off” buttons on the oven and stove, and keeping cleaning supplies secured.

#4: INVEST IN A MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEM In case of a fall, fire or other emergency, help can be summoned by simply pressing a button, either around their neck or on their wrist. Immediate connection to a 24/7 monitoring company ensures a quick response.

#5: INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM The elderly population is at a higher risk for home thefts and break-ins since they’re more vulnerable and often live alone.

#6: IDENTITY PROTECTION Seniors are highly susceptible to identity theft. Frequently explain why they should never give out their credit card,

#8: PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES In case of a power outage, have a safety kit readily available. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors near the bedrooms, and check them annually. Ensure that a working fire extinguisher is available in the kitchen, and that everyone knows how to use it.

#9: HIRE A COMPANION Consider hiring a home care companion. These are trained professionals who can help your loved one in a range of ways. They can aid with mobility, bathing and dressing needs, grocery shopping, meal preparation and housekeeping, as well as transportation and medication reminders.
