START PLANNING YOUR SUMMER GARDEN THIS MONTH

BY THE END MARCH, GARDENERS IN FROST-FREE REGIONS START DREAMING OF THAT SUMMER GARDEN, AND THIS IS A GREAT MONTH FOR PLANTING WARM-SEASON ANNUALS SUCH AS ANGELONIA, WAX BEGONIA AND ZINNIA. In South Carolina, we have both good news and bad news about planting in March. The good news is that temperatures are pretty mild with an average high temperature in the 50s and 70s. The bad news is that a fluke snow storm or freeze isn’t out of the picture, so that’s a risk to new plantings. If you’re anxious to get into the dirt, cool-season vegetables like peas or leafy greens will do well, as will flowers that are tolerant of cool weather. Berry shrubs can be planted this month too. One of the best things you can do in March is to rake leaves and mulch away from garden beds to allow spring-flowering bulbs and perennials to show their pretty heads. The soil will warm faster because it’s exposed to the sun. Plastic garden rakes do better than metal garden rakes, which can rip tender leaves and tips from emerging plants. 20
