GIVING BACK

JDRF - SUPPORTING FAMILIES WITH

TYPE 1 DIABETES

Funds raised by JDRF in South Carolina and around the country help drive research towards improved treatments a cure of type 1 diabetes.

JDRF is the largest non-profit funder of type 1 research in the world, funding the best research around the globe.

JDRF CONTINUES TO PROVIDE RESOURCES AND FUND RESEARCH TO DEFEAT TYPE 1 DIABETES IN SOUTH CAROLINA

10

Lake Murray Lifestyle | December 2020

ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES KEVIN SIMMONS, SOUTH CAROLINA MARKET DIRECTOR FOR THE GEORGIA SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER OF JDRF, KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT FAMILIES GO THROUGH WHEN A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES. Twelve years ago, when his daughter was just 9, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The diagnosis was a complete shock and to him and his family. Like other families faced with the diagnosis, Simmons felt fear and confusion. “No one in our family had diabetes. I noticed that she was going to the bathroom a lot, which is one of the signs but I didn’t think much of it,” he said. An ophthalmologist eventually noticed the girl’s eyesight was declining and told the Simmons to take her to a doctor immediately. That’s when they learned their daughter was one of the 1.6 million people living with type 1 diabetes in the U.S. “The biggest fear is of the unknown. The diagnosis hit us like a ton of bricks,” Simmons said. Simmons now works for JDRF (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) where he helps other families transition with the diagnosis. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. Its causes are not fully known, and there is currently no cure. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive. From funding innovative research to advocating for government action to providing a support structure for the community, no other organization does more to fight type 1 diabetes (T1D) than JDRF. In addition, the organization provides resources, information, guides, and a community for families living with type 1 diabetes. In South Carolina, JDRF works with three major hospitals to provide Bags of Hope for families with children in the hospital, especially those newly diagnosed. The bags include pamphlets, resources, tools and a big teddy bear named Rufus. This year, the organization has seen an uptick in children being diagnosed

Rufus, the teddy bear with type 1, is the centerpiece of the JDRF Bag of Hope which is provided to children diagnosed with type 1 at any partner hospitals.

with the disease. COVID may have something to do with that as those with diabetes tend to have a harder time with the virus. “In the last two weeks, we’ve had 10 new diagnosed children in South Carolina alone,” Simmons said. “The general public has little knowledge about type 1 diabetes and the difference between type 1 and type 2.” In an effort to educate and also fund needed and continual research, JDRF is currently in fundraising mode. On Nov. 1, 200 teams in South Carolina and Georgia took part in the One Walk. JDRF One Walk is the largest T1D event in the world, raising more than $1 billion for T1D research. For the first time ever, the goal was to walk 1.6 million miles in support of the 1.6 million Americans living with T1D. As the leading global organization funding T1D research, JDRF’s mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. The JDRF Hope Gala is set for spring but due to COVID, the Hope Gala will once again be a virtual event.

JDRF Ride to Cure program is a wonderful way to support JDRF while staying fit on a bicycle either on the road or from the comfort of your own home.

“The South Carolina Georgia Chapter has a goal of raising $1.9 million by Dec. 31,” said Simmons. “South Carolina’s goal of that is $390,000.” To learn more about JDRF, to volunteer, or to donate, visit jdrf.org. CityLifestyle.com/LakeMurray

The new product offering is just another way Palmetto cares for the health of its customers, especially in the fight against COVID-19. Cleaning your air ducts ensures you’ll have a cleaner air.” Call Palmetto Air Conditioning at 803-358-9673 for more details.

A Different Kind of Agency UNSHAKEABLE FAITH, STRATEGIC FOCUS HELPED BUILD ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S PREMIER AGENCIES - BUT IT WASN'T ALWAYS EASY

Manning Kolb, Matt Thompson and Michael White, the leadership of Splash Omnimedia

“From 2006 to 2008, as you may remember, we saw the largest real estate recession of our adult life. Both Michael and I were in mortgage banking, and we constantly thought of how we could help our clients do more business in order for them to help us do more business,” Thompson said. “So

it to where it would resonate with external prospective customers and clients and patients,” Thompson said. Though they were primarily marketing and consulting with real estate related companies, someone outside the real estate industry called and requested marketing for their business. Why not, the two thought? “We saw the writing on the wall in 2006, which would have been my second major real estate recession cycle. To be honest with you, I didn’t want to go back through another down cycle in the mortgage real estate industry,’ Thompson said. “And so I said, ‘Hey, let’s start expanding our client base to non-real estate related folks. It wasn’t me or Mike who came up with that. We were Christ-led, and we are a Christian-based organization. We feel like God directed us in that way, which is where Omnimedia comes from. The word Omni resonates with us because Christ is all present and ever-present in our business.” In 2006, the pair created Splash Omnimedia with a handful of employees. However, the road to success was a rocky one. SUCCESS THROUGH STRUGGLE While researching the marketing / advertising industry, Splash Omnimedia quickly learned that most firms were owned and operated by web designers, graphic designers, or long term advertising professionals. Thompson and White were business and banking consultants. “We now serve hundreds of corporate clients from small businesses all the way up to extremely large businesses. But it wasn’t always peaches and cream, if you will,” Thompson said. The recession was in full swing as Splash Omnimedia began, and starting a brand new company in a new industry was difficult. The two invested everything they had into the agency, struggling at times as they attempted to wear every hat possible. “We really, really struggled. I mean, we got down to the point where we didn’t really know how we were going to even keep our lights on in our house. There was a stint in my life when I really questioned if I was doing what I was supposed to be doing,” Thompson said. “But we had faith. We just kept getting nudges and over time, things just so slowly appeared for us. Over the last three to five years, things started picking up significantly and now we’ve become one of the top communication firms in the state of South Carolina,” said Thompson. The firm welcomed Manning Kolb joining as a partner in the ownership team in 2017. CONTINUED >

A DIFFERENT KIND OF AGENCY While most advertising agencies only cared about buying the right mix of media like TV commercials, radio ads, and billboard campaigns, Splash Omnimedia focuses on the results and measuring them. The business creates strategic plans and communication systems with a team that thinks beyond their relative area of concentration. In turn, Splash Omnimedia is a true marketing firm, not just an advertising agency. “When someone hires us, we have all-inclusive pricing, which is very different from our industry. When someone hires us, they pay one price. And for that price, you get a staff of 20 to 25 people,” Thompson said. “You have basically a chief marketing officer and an entire team that literally works on their own that client’s business every single day.” This is what Splash Omnimedia is all about. We understand business, we understand what the good times look like and we understand what the bad times look like in business. Therefore we come at it from a doctor’s perspective where we come in and try to figure out your symptoms and figure out what your goals are in life and everything you got to do,” Thompson said. “We figure out the solutions, prescribe it and then manage it. Because of our own struggles, we are very empathetic and understand that there are ups and downs in every business, and we can ride through those ups and downs to help our clients.” The leadership actually now has four organizations,

The Lawyer Lisa

IDENTIFIED BY THE GREEN SIGN JUST OFF I-26 NEAR THE ST. ANDREW’S ROAD EXIT SITS A SMALL BUILDING, HOME TO A QUIETLY BOOMING LAW PRACTICE. LawyerLisa, LLC, a firm focused on estate planning, long term care, and real estate, has grown at an astounding rate. Originally from Parma, Ohio, its founder and namesake, Lisa Brown moved to South Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2004. After becoming a partner at her prior large firm, Lisa found herself wanting to strip away the over-worked and overly competitive nature the profession of law often lends itself to. So, she sat down and made a plan for a firm with the culture she had always envisioned and believed the people of the Carolinas needed as well; a culture fueled by compassionate people helping each client on a personal level.

bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS

Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it

can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.

With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,

anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.

B L AC K R O O S T E R This easy-going French-ish bistro is the place for French basics, as well as some fun dishes from countries where France had an impact. Roof Top Bar has the best view of Columbia, and would be a perfect setting for an intimate gift exchange. Try small plates like Fried Gulf Oysters with Duck Fat Remoulade.

NONNAHS AT THE HAVEN COFFEE HOUSE A popular sweet spot in Lexington, Nonnah's opens at 6 p.m., but desserts will be available throughout the day during coffee shop hours. This coffee house touts “coffee with a purpose” and donates a portion of its proceeds to Lighthouse for Life, which works to educate the community about human trafficking. Pick up a bag of coffee or a bag of sweets for that easy holiday gift.

P R I VAC H E F Renowned local chefs come to your home to serve dinner parties of 8-10 guests. Create a unique menu and let the chefs plan your holiday parties, events and dinners. Chef brings all the necessary ingredients and to ensure your safety, guests have very little contact during the party. Treat yourself this holiday season. CityLifestyle.com/LakeMurray
