ing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages lakeside or poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Lake Murray. Meet a few of them (and their four-legged friends) and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade pet treats on page 20 so you can spoil your loyal companions. When’s the last time you had family portraits taken? On page 22, we offer some tips for styling the most successful photo sessions.

“I’VE ALWAYS LOVED TO DRAW AND PAINT BUT NEVER TOOK MYSELF SERIOUSLY AS AN ARTIST.” —RACHEL PARKER

AS A SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST, RACHEL PARKER GETS HER INNATE TALENT HONESTLY. She comes from a family of Lake Murray artists, with her mother an award-winning portraitist and her father an award-winning photographer. One night, about 20 years ago, Rachel decided to place one of her paintings on eBay for $1. When the bids hit $30, she was hooked. "I was so excited—I didn't sleep at all that night," Rachel says. Rachel now sells her artwork to people in countries around the globe including Switzerland, China, Costa Rica, Australia, Japan and France. She says she hopes her art brings customers as much joy as it gives her in creating it. While Rachel is well-known for her cat art, she also paints other animals, people, wildlife, florals and landscapes. To see her variety of skills, visit RachelsStudio.com.

spacious rooms flooded with natural light and a dedicated area for patients who come to the hospital in labor or those who need temporary evaluation. There are also six antepartum rooms for patients who may need extensive long-term monitoring. “We're offering the finest delivery suites and obstetric services in South Carolina,” says Tod Augsburger, president and CEO of Lexington Medical Center. Ginger Moore, RN, BSN

A hallmark of the new unit is a mosaic containing more than 4,000 photos of babies born at the hospital since it opened in 1971. In all, more than 100,000 babies have been born at Lexington Medical Center. Caring for these tiny patients begins before they’re born throughout Lexington Medical Center’s network of care. The hospital’s physician network includes approximately 30 obstetricians and certified nurse midwives. A new member of the team is Paul Browne, MD, FACOG, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. He helps women with high-risk or complicated pregnancies, which includes teen pregnancies, twins, triplets and abnormalities of the uterus and cervix. “The best way to prevent having a premature baby is to have frequent visits with your doctor to review any warning signs of pre-term labor,” Dr. Browne says. A HAPPY ENDING While Hallie was discharged from the hospital, baby Jack spent a full week in the Special Care Nursery before going home to Columbia. And Jack was OK. Today, he is a healthy, thriving baby. Hallie says you’d never know he was a preemie. LexMed.com/OBGYN 803.791.2000
