THIS MONTH, WE PRESENT OUR “GENTS” ISSUE, CELEBRATING ALL THINGS MASCULINE. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16, but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the longer, sunny days can be filled with fishing excursions, backyard cookouts, camping trips, baseball games and so much more. To gather information for this issue, we looked to the experts: men of Lake Murray. You might even recognize a few faces. Instead of booking a faraway vacation this summer, how about making it a nearcation? Check out our suggestions on page 18. We also highlight places to relax on page 26. And if you want new ways to stay in touch with the aging men in your family or circle of friends, see the options on page 14. OK, guys, crack open a cold one—perhaps at our local O'Hara's Public House (131 E. Main St.) in Lexington or go over the dam to D.W. Fusco's (2914 Dreher Shoals Road) in Irmo—because this month is all about you!

Staycation, Holistay, Daycation: HOW TO PLAN LOCAL RETREATS
MANY OF US REMEMBER GROWING UP AND BUILDING A FORT IN OUR LIVING ROOMS. What a wonderful escape from reality. In our world of make-believe, we created a whole new environment and scenario that allowed us to step away from daily routines and pretend to be someone who was bound to save the family from evil-doers! Since the dawn of humanity, people have gone on journeys to explore the unknown. Ultimately, with the advent of agriculture, humans began to settle in areas that helped create economies and community. But, for some, they were compelled to continue exploration as the desire to find new hunting grounds or even create extended communities that perhaps escaped limitations or restriction from previously outlined settlements.

WELCOME HOME
We’ve each heard the story of the Pilgrims who fled Europe while seeking a “new land” in which to live free and set up a lifestyle that aligned apart from European cultural norms. But when did people decide to temporarily depart from their routines for the sheer pleasure of doing so? Sometime following World War II, and as affluence began to reach more people of the middle class, the notion of getting away from daily life took hold. For most, it was a family affair of adventure and excitement aboard a 1950s Ford Woody Wagon and pulling the now classic Airstream Travel Trailer. No doubt, many stories and films have roots in the cascade of adventures known as the ‘50s. Over
the
following
decades,
many middle-class people found themselves struggling financially as both spouses took on full-time jobs. This, combined with children’s busy schedules and activities, would certainly impede the odds of coordinating a well-planned vacation. One can travel through smaller rural towns and witness firsthand the many travel lodges and vacated motels to realize the shift in trends. The fate of these small mom-andpop businesses and gas stations also fell with the advent of our national interstate systems.

She spent each day out of the house and discovering everything about the city where she lived, from historic churches to local museums and, of course, the zoo. Most of us don’t realize just how much our own town, city or state has to offer. I could list a slew of local activities in the Lake Murray/Columbia area or statewide for the most popular destinations. But stop and think for a minute: how many small towns have you spent an overnight in within the state? Nearly every town has some sort of annual event or festival. Likewise, each has a rich history about which locals love to talk.

T: T H E MAGICAL SEVEN STEPS TO CAPTURING HEALTH BENEFITS OF TESTOSTERONE
ALMOST WEEKLY, SCIENCE UNCOVERS NEW WAYS THAT TESTOSTERONE IS AS VITAL TO MEN’S HEALTH AS ESTROGEN IS TO WOMEN. Testosterone is beneficial for bone density and works alongside vitamin D to build stronger bones in men. It optimizes muscle and fat mass, and according to fitness gurus, is the holy grail of bodybuilding. This is valuable for men at any age, but in older men, strong bones and muscles can literally determine how long you’ll live. Researchers even use hand strength to measure your odds of dying soon, and unsurprisingly, testosterone levels impact hand strength. But did you know that on top of testosterone's effects on fertility, virility, muscle mass and bone strength, it's a key component of a healthy heart? Men with low testosterone have almost double the rates of heart disease, including increased atherosclerosis (plaque in your arteries), heart failure and high blood pressure. Low testosterone is also associated with insulin resistance, a key factor in diabetes progression, and has a massive impact on mood in men, leading to higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, fatigue and irritability. Weight (specifically fat) gain, breast formation, erectile dysfunction and muscle loss are just the icing on the cake. In short, testosterone is a major regulator of a man’s health, virility, resilience, mood and longevity. Without adequate levels, men feel horrible, perform poorly, get sicker and die quicker. 24
Lake Murray Lifestyle | June 2019
Science has observed declining testosterone levels in men for decades, along with increasing male infertility and male reproductive cancers. A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found median levels of bioavailable testosterone in American men in their 60s have dropped 30 to 50 percent in the last 30 years. In other words, testosterone levels have dropped a lot in the last three decades, and other studies have shown still larger drops since the turn of the century. The issue is considered, by some, to be an epidemic. Unfortunately, science has yet to figure out why men are suffering these severe generational declines in testosterone levels. From an environment full of “fake” estrogens that lock up hormone receptors, to a nation that's really overweight, to the poor-quality foods we eat, to the lack of our exercise, to increasingly high levels of lifestyle stress, and our changing culture and society, many factors play a role in creating a nation of men with low testosterone. But until researchers hone in on the key cause, the good news is that men can reverse “low T” and start to feel like themselves again. CONTINUED >

FOLLOWING
ARE
SEVEN STRAIGHTFORWARD
ACTION
POINTS TO CHANGE MALE DIETS AND LIFESTYLES TO PROMOTE HEALTHY TESTOSTERONE LEVELS:
BU I LT W R IG H T, BU I LT ON T I M E .
1. LOSE WEIGHT: This is powerful, not just for testosterone, but for all hormones including insulin (blood sugar control), cortisol (stress hormone) and estrogen (less fat means less estrogen). 2. GET OFF THE COUCH: Exercise is key for every area of health, including hormones. Weight lifting has specifically shown the most benefit by increasing lean muscle and growth hormone levels; even 10 minutes a day has positive effects! 3. DE-STRESS: Stress affects all hormones, not just testosterone. Think of it like a bank account: all hormones come from one account (cholesterol), and when you’re stressed, your body “robs Peter” (testosterone) to “pay Paul” (stress hormones) so you can weather the stress. The problem is it steals from all the hormones that make life healthy and enjoyable—like male and female sex hormones.
Quality Custom Fencing by
Eddie Boatwright To schedule a consultation, call (803) 528-5840
4. GET SLEEP: The effect of sleep on all hormones is profound, and that includes testosterone. Adequate sleep (six to seven hours a night) lowers cortisol, which frees up your body to replenish testosterone and recover reserves. 5. CUT ALCOHOL : In men, research is pretty clear. Alcohol, especially beer, tends to lower testosterone levels while simultaneously increasing estrogen levels. This is a bad combo. 6. EAT BET TER FOOD: This includes both quantity and quality. 7. NOURISH TARGETED NUTRIENTS: There are bogus products to help “stimulate” testosterone, but a couple of proven things include zinc, magnesium and vitamin D. A few of the richest foods in zinc include pumpkin seeds, oysters and beef. Magnesium-rich foods include nuts, leafy greens and dark chocolate.

Father's Day Brunch at Bodhi Thai Dining See what delightful creations executive chef Nivit Tipvaree and sous chef Derek Poole will be serving at this special three-course brunch at 126 E. Main St. in Lexington. Tim Brown, Bodhi's manager, encourages everyone to hurry and call 803.957.1994 for reservations because their brunches sell out quickly. In Thai, the word "Bodhi" is translated as "enlightenment" or "wisdom," and its verbal root "budh" means to awaken, as designated by a leaf as a symbol of happiness. BodhiThaiDining.com

Tony and Beth Banco recently made their right move and settled into their dream home in Lexington. After living in a starter home for nearly 10 years with a growing family, the Banco’s decided it was time to transition into their next home. With so many options in beautiful Lexington County, Tony and Beth could have chosen anywhere to live, and certainly could have decided to list and purchase using any real estate firm, however the Banco’s chose Southern Visions to handle the sale of their current home and purchase of their dream home. Mrs. Banco said, “we chose to list and purchase with Southern Visions Real Estate because of the strong presence and reputation in our area. Southern Visions has a track record for selling homes quickly and has the experience and knowledge to make buying and selling a great process. We believe a company is only as good as the people who work for them, and we chose Southern Visions for the people.”
We are often asked what makes Lexington so special. Lexington has something for everyone...award-winning schools, beautiful Lake Murray, the small-town feel, perfect proximity to the mountains and ocean, the state capital nearby and a seemingly endless list of other amazing qualities about our home town. Mr. and Mrs. Banco say, “We are both in careers that involve service within the Lexington community, and we can't think of a better place to be. The schools are great, there are lots of shopping and dining options, and we're so close to the zoo, museum, and airport, just to name a few.”
Whether you are looking to purchase your dream home, scale down or move up, you can trust Southern Visions Real Estate to help you make the right move.
