Trying new things and perhaps going where you’ve never gone before is always a welcome departure from the routine. That exploration can be to learn new things, grow spiritually, or just see new sights. Frequently I get caught up in the busyness of believing the only things worth doing are those things that can be measured in tasks completed or checked off my to-do list. Rarely, if ever, does that create joy or a smile in my life. The truth is - it is really an incomplete and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room to explore, to try new places and things, to be a beginner, and even to get lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built. By my count, I have five kids. My two oldest sons are grown men with their own busy lives. I have three bonus kids as well. The 22-year-old is exploring the adventure of her own business. The 20-year-old is exploring a PT major and seeing if it is a fit, and the youngest will be exploring high school next year. My oldest mentioned the other day that he, his younger brother, and I needed to plan an adventure every year, just the three of us. He suggested swimming with the sharks. I quickly pivoted to something else: tandem skydiving or a pack trip on horseback in the mountains. I’ll let you know what we decide. The shark one is in third place for me right now, but I applaud the idea. “Adventures" and “exploration” don't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the deck, walking a new trail, or going out to find a fun dessert place you've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! ;) Happy April!

Spotlight: Wheels to Waves FROM AUDIO TO ELECTRONICS, ONE SMALL BUSINESS IS READY TO UPGRADE YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE WATER AND ROAD THIS SUMMER ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA KOSTOCHKO
“Basically, if you have a car, truck, boat, motorcycle, side-by-side, jet ski, or even a golf cart and you have a need for some kind of electronics install or upgrade, we can help!” exclaims Dave Allen, owner and founder of Wheels to Waves. Dave’s infatuation began with his first car. “I started spending what seemed like every paycheck I could on stereos, speakers, electronics, and other gadgets.” Owning and running an automotive and marine electronics shop was always his dream, creating a business plan for a car stereo shop as a 19-year-old kid in the late 90s. It wouldn’t be until a decade later that Dave left his rewarding but stressful work in film and television to focus on family and his calling, opening Wheels to Waves close to home in Spring Park. Dave and his business partner, Greg Powell, do everything from complete audio system upgrades, simple audio repairs, lighting upgrades, and fish finders to backup cameras, Apple CarPlay upgrades, amplifiers, subwoofers, and even TV installations on the pleasure boats and larger yachts, providing great audio and electronics solutions to thousands of Lake Minnetonka area clients. Greg joined Wheels to Waves in 2017 after Dave needed help keeping up with demand. “I called Best Buy to secretly “price shop” what they’d charge to come out to my boat and install a stereo system. I was told that they only had one tech in the

whole company that was allowed to go on-site for marine installs and that I’d have to get a hold of Greg Powell,” explains Dave. “After chatting with Greg, he let me know that there was another company he’d heard of doing a lot of installs on Lake Minnetonka, and the only bad thing was ‘they can be hard to get ahold of’ …and their name was ‘Wheels to Waves’. Pretty sure I laughed out loud,” laughs Dave. Realizing their combined potential, Greg offered incredible value as one of the most qualified auto and marine electronics technicians in the state, holding a Mobile Electronics Certified Professional master certificate, as well as ASE, NMEA, and ABYC electrical certifications. “Like Dave, car audio was just beginning to be a real phenomenon when my friends and I started driving,” shares Greg. “At 16, I could never afford the audio system I dreamed of, but I could come close. I love the creativity required to up-fit a vehicle or boat with audio and electronics, and now that my skill sets have matured, I can create an amazing experience for our customers.” Dave adds, “We are total nerds when it comes to electronics and sharing our knowledge. I love sketching out the systems, explaining it to the clients, and seeing these projects come to life, knowing they’ll enjoy it for many years to come.” Their enthusiasm shines through to their customers; clients return time and again whether upgrading battery systems and trolling motors on fishing boats or adding LED lights and a disco ball to a cruiser. “Our customers can expect honest and open communications, top-notch service, and continued support throughout the ownership of their boat or vehicle,” assures Greg. “Knowing that we help facilitate many good times in a car or on the water makes me exceptionally proud of the work we do.” For sound systems, Dave and Greg recommend starting with the subwoofer. “Adding a subwoofer is a game changer, greatly increasing the sound quality. Without it, audio can feel flat and thin,” explains Greg. The best way to contact them is through the wheelstowaves.com website. “As two guys with a couple thousand clients, we just ask customers to be patient with us,” says Dave. “We’re happy to have been a part of Lake Minnetonka and its communities for so long and are excited to see what the next years will bring.”

Building a Backyard Full of Adventure WITH FORTZ’ S HAN D - CR AF TE D CUSTOM P L AY S T R U C T U R E S , T H E S K Y I S T H E L I M I T
Imagine this: you’re the captain aboard a pirate ship sailing the ocean in search of buried treasure. The seas are getting choppy, and you’ve got a cell full of traitors below deck. On the horizon, you see the island where X marks the spot, but as you dock the ship, the traitors break free, and it’s now a race to see who gets the treasure first. Adventures like this are exactly what Adam Rasmussen, founder of Fortz, wants to create for kids with his handcrafted, custom play structures. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic out of a necessity for his son, Adam used his love of design and construction to create Fortz and build one-of-a-kind play structures for kids of all abilities and ages. From zip lines and rope bridges to trap doors and tunnels, the forts are custom tailored to each family. “We like to build them so everyone can play, even adults. We also try to encourage creativity and exploration in all our play structures,” Adam says. During the design process, Adam meets with families to discuss everything from their children’s ages and interests to the location of the fort. Once the basics are covered, the fun part begins — developing ideas and selecting play features.
The whole family is encouraged to provide input for the forts. In fact, some of the best and most creative forts are inspired by kids! Adam recalls receiving a sketch of a particular play structure designed by a young girl that resembled a cat with ears and all. While parents get the final say, allowing kids’ input into their own fort encourages them to use their imagination and ensures they’ll love each feature. “Getting the kids involved and letting their imaginations run wild is the best part. Each family is so unique that the play structure they need is unique to them. It’s fun to be able to design that for them,” Adam says. When considering a Fortz play structure, it’s easy to understand why the kids will love it. With endless design possibilities, kids will find themselves exploring what it means to be a child. But even more so, they’ll have a place to call their own that isn’t a bedroom or playroom. After all, kids don’t necessarily get the same freedom in the house as they do outside in nature, and they definitely don’t get to add secret entrances or a climbing wall to their bedroom. A Fortz play structure allows kids the potential to bring their dreams to life and “lets them be creative thinkers and explorers at heart.” CONTINUED >

Adam Rasmussen
One unique feature Fortz offers is the ability for the play structures to grow alongside the kids who play on them. If a child is four-years-old now, they may enjoy slides and swings, but as they grow older, they may come to enjoy rock walls and trap doors. Adam takes this into account as he’s designing and makes it easy to swap out these features as they get older. Additionally, Adam says he loves to construct the forts in a way that allows kids, when old enough, to add to it themselves. “I want it to be a place they can build on to and make their own. I want them to ask for saws and wood for Christmas so they can add something exciting and new. I want them to take over the build process. That’s something I’m passionate about, giving kids the curiosity to build themselves.” Kids can beg and plead, but one surefire way to sell parents on a Fortz play structure is to give them something to enjoy as well. Adam says he likes to build forts that are as entertaining for the adults as they are for the kids. That may mean including
20

hammocks for relaxing or including a bar with rope swing seats. It also means ensuring each fort is low maintenance and safe. Safety is a top priority for Adam. He follows the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recommendation for play structures and is a certified playground inspector. “I want [the forts] to be super safe so parents feel like they can let their kids play and not have to worry about them getting injured,” Adam says. When it’s all said and done, Fortz play structures are intended to be fun for the whole family. With endless customization and adaptability, kids and parents alike are encouraged to explore together and create lasting memories right in the backyard. “Kids’ imaginations are so incredible and fun to work with. We can design and build anything. I don’t like to put any restrictions on it. The sky is the limit for what we create.” To start your own backyard adventure and learn more visit: fortz.com

LUYA SHOES SHOWS YOU HOW TO STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE IN STYLE
24
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY
Yesterday I saw a woman at the grocery store with the best outfit. Hair in a messy bun, black coat, and cozy gray sweatpants, but paired with the most fantastic sparkly heels. What otherwise might have been considered a schlubby outfit immediately transformed into an effortlessly cool ensemble. The shoes elevated the entire look. She was running errands right; walking down the grocery aisles in a good pair of shoes certainly makes picking out produce feel a bit more exciting. Owner of Luya - Shoes and Other Fine Things in Excelsior, Connie Hawley, explains, “If I have an outfit that’s all black, I can pair it with the coolest shoes, which to the outside observer tells you a little bit about me like, ‘Oh, I have some creativity in me.’” Connie’s son and Luya co-owner, Travis, would agree. “Particularly on the men’s side of things, everyone’s wheelhouse is a dress shirt, sport coat, and trousers,” says Travis. “Artistic, colorful shoes, for example, are a great way to try a new
style and express your personality and individuality without leaving your comfort zone.” Exploring new styles can be intimidating, especially when you have an established look your friends, family, and colleagues (and even yourself) are all accustomed to. Shoes are a great gateway into testing new styles and going bold without feeling too awkward in your own skin. “Start slow. Baby steps,” advises Travis. “When people come into Luya, we like to chat and get to know their personalities so we can offer suggestions with a better idea of the areas where they’d want to slowly push the envelope.” Connie adds, “Instead of trying a higher heel than normal plus a crazy color, just try one new element. Choose a pretty color that speaks to you, or pick an interesting sole design. Start little by little.” Travis and Connie visit markets each year in Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, San Diego, and even a smaller expo in St. Paul, searching for not only the latest trends but something unique, always prioritizing comfort and style. Luya doesn’t sell stilettos. Travis and Connie’s philosophy is that shoes are works of art, but you should also be able to live your life comfortably in them. Recent trends Travis and Connie are seeing are all about sole. “A big style is the boot and bootie, but without the tall heel. Instead, you see a platform sole that looks wavy or offers a distinctive design,” says Travis. You still get the height and style but also comfort. Platform sneakers, bright colors, and artistically designed soles are en vogue. “We’re seeing soles using recycled products with bright colors and patterns,” describes Connie. “You can get a lot of design elements from the sole as well as from the actual upper shoe.”
For women, Connie recommends edgy sneakers from brands like Dyan. “It’s a fun sneaker with a West Coast meets New York vibe. The brand offers a great way to express yourself without going too crazy and still having that comfort.” One of Travis’s favorite brands for men is Wolf and Shepherd for the perfect smart-casual sneaker. Fluchos is another go-to brand for Travis. “They’re out of Spain with both traditional and funky styles. Lots of great options for men,” says Travis. Footwear sold at Luya is sourced from all over the world. Recently, Travis and Connie connected with Gabriela Ephrem, a Brazilian designer whose beautiful handmade sandals, slides, and scrunchy boots are one-of-kind. So the next time you head out to run some errands, break out the stylish kicks or the fun heels. Why wait for a special occasion to explore your style or wear the shoes you love? “Even for when you’re home doing the dishes, we have some beautiful waterproof shoes and boots,” laughs Travis. Explore Your Home’s Possibilities Sawhill Custom Kitchen and Design helps you see your home’s potential ARTICLE BY JEN LARSEN FORTNER Spring is finally here, and with spring comes a fresh perspective on what we want and need in our homes. Matt Cook, president of Sawhill Custom Kitchen and Design, helps clients explore the endless possibilities to achieve their vision. Sawhill has been in the business for over fifty years and has expanded from luxury kitchen design and evolved into bathrooms, basements, mud rooms, and additions. Standing out from other firms, they “don’t have one specific look,” Matt explains. “Some firms lean strongly toward traditional design. Others toward very modern. We are capable of taking on any project and making it fit within
the design of the home. If your home has a certain style, we don’t want to make your new space feel like it doesn’t belong. We take the existing elements that are most appreciated and pronounce those in the design process.” When clients need design advice, Sawhill considers what is already in place. Matt says, “For example, if a client lived in an English Tudor, we would advise against the trend of a white and grey theme we see in many homes now. We would suggest classic touches to keep within the spirit of the original style.” While offering full-scale design/build services, Sawhill is also able to remodel smaller spaces and CONTINUED >

reimagine possibilities in older homes. They work on many houses, condominiums, and loft spaces that may not have ideal footprints, which encourages creativity. “You don’t always have to tear out a wall or add on. You can change the layout of an existing space to make a huge difference in the function of any home.” Many of us struggle to envision the finished space while in the planning stages. Sawhill understands. The Sawhill team works with each client, guiding them through a funneled design process beginning with the broad vision for the project. Next is space orientation and exploring the uses of existing space. Space planning often involves two or three different options so clients can see elevations and 3D renderings. Sawhill’s software offers the chance to virtually “walk through” the new spaces and get a feel for them before making any big decisions. Then the decisions are narrowed to the amenities and functions of each space, finalizing the process with the material selections. Using the virtual software and the process of elimination, Sawhill can assist homeowners in making the very best choices for their desired result. Over time, some design elements can become outdated as new needs and new styles emerge. Can old trends be salvaged? Personally, I’m considering my very outdated desk, which has become a giant junk drawer. Matt says they absolutely can. “At one point, desks were in, but now we don’t
30
H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN
need them. We have updated and integrated kitchen islands with more seating, digital hookups, and charging stations. Kitchen islands are where many people work now. Former desks have been cleverly transformed into elegant coffee stations or wine bars.” Ages and stages in life also play a large role in design decisions. A young couple or family has different needs than empty nesters. Matt recommends making decisions accordingly. Children will create a lot of wear and tear on surfaces and appliances. Durability is paramount. It has to be functional and stand the test of time. Couples, particularly empty nesters, may find themselves choosing more elegant finishes and features that speak to their unique style and are more in line with their lifestyle of entertaining. It can become more about their own personal use and design aesthetic. The housing market has been quite active, and some homeowners remodel with resale on their minds. However, Matt cautions against waiting to make changes only to sell. “People should enjoy their homes. You can get everything you want and still have an awareness of how it may impact someone down the line. The space is for you. People shouldn’t miss out on years of enjoyment in their own home.” Explore your existing spaces with fresh inspiration and go to sawhillkitchens.com to see what is possible.

Wayzata Minnesota:
“Sailing Town USA” How you can be part of a rich sailing tradition on Lake Minnetonka ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS BROWN
38
M UST SE E | AU TO + M AR INE
Gordy Bowers (left) former US Olympic Coach and current sailing coach.
On any given day of the week, it’s common to look from the shores of Lake Minnetonka and see the lake dotted with large clusters of sailboats. With groups often more than a hundred strong they crisscross the lake with their graceful and colorful sails in a seemingly random fashion. However, they are part of organized races that occur nearly every day of the week. That’s a lot of boats and racing events, even if you are talking about a large coastal city. This has not gone unnoticed at the national and world level, so much so that US Sailing, the primary organization which has administered the sport of yachting in the United States since 1897, lauds Lake Minnetonka’s Wayzata as one of the top ten “sailing towns” in the USA. This is a well-deserved and not easily attained status that is recognized the world over. That’s saying a lot when the competition for this honor is the likes of San Diego, New York, or Seattle.
A RICH HISTORY Competitive yachting began on Lake Minnetonka about the same time as what is referred to as the ‘resort period,’ generally recognized to be the early 1880s. With the lake providing its inviting, cooling summer breezes to the heat-stricken city, residents and people wasted no time, taking advantage of the ‘free air conditioning’ of a sailboat. That and consider an old saying amongst sailors: “when two sailboats are within sight of each other, there is a race.” Thus are the beginnings of the competitive yachting scene on Lake Minnetonka. With national-level regattas dating as far back as the 1890s, Lake Minnetonka became and continues to hold its own as a venue and origin of championships and champion sailors at the world level.
YACHT CLUBS ABOUND ON LAKE MINNETONKA With this momentum, it wasn’t long before the first social club involving
competitive yachting was established with the Minnetonka Yacht Club in 1882 (minnetonkayachtclub.org) on the Lighthouse Island enclave, just offshore from Deephaven. Tom Burton, a lifelong sailor on the lake probably says it best in describing the length and depth of the tradition. “I am especially proud of my family’s five generations or 140 years of sailing as members of the Minnetonka Yacht Club, co-founded by my great grandfather Hazen Burton.” Since then, three other yacht clubs have formed, Wayzata (wyc.org, est. 1965), Upper Minnetonka (in Mound, umyc.org, est.1963), and Shorewood (as a part of Tonka Bay Marina, tonkabaymarina.com, est. 1979). Each of them has now been a key part of the competitive yachting scene for many decades. The shores of Lake Minnetonka also boast two highly regarded sailing schools: Wayzata Sailing (wayzatasailing.org) and

“I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE INVITED ABOARD AS A CREW MEMBER. IT WAS EXCITING AND FUN AND EVEN THOUGH I WAS NERVOUS KNOWING VERY LITTLE ABOUT SAILING, THE CREW WAS WARM, FUN, AND VERY WELCOMING. I NOW KNOW WHY PEOPLE LOVE THIS SPORT.” -MATT JEROME
Lake Minnetonka (lmss.us). Each of them hosts at least 1,000 students per season ranging from kids aged seven up to adults. The sailing schools not only give youngsters the foundational skills, but they also give adult newbies the basics on which to take their new sport to their own boats or even explore the world. The sailing schools also facilitate secondary and college-level competition, drawing sailing teams from all over the country. As a result, Lake Minnetonka has been continuously developing world-recognized sailors up to and including the Olympic medal levels, inviting international competition to its waters ever since.
THE YACHT RACING CULTURE OF LAKE MINNETONKA (AND ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES) Let’s not forget the skippers and crews that make these boats go and where they come from. On any given summer weekend, there can be as many as a thousand sailors participating in competitive events across the lake. Not only are these participants present on the lake when they race, but they are also members of the community and patrons of the businesses where they keep and prepare their boats. On any given race day near the communities that have a yacht club, the bustle and excitement ‘in town’ is readily apparent. The enthusiasm is especially palpable in the spring after the long hiatus. “It’s that time of year when yacht racing holds the sport’s fascination for sailors and onlookers alike,” reported the Minneapolis Tribune in August of 1933.

One of the things that is distinctive about the Lake Minnetonka competitive yachting culture is its inclusive nature. At Wayzata Yacht Club, for example, there is a table sign that’s displayed before every race: ‘Reserved For: Crew Looking For A Ride.’ Different from many of the big coastal yacht clubs with membership card access only, the tradition of the Lake Minnetonka yacht clubs has always been to include newcomers just wanting to try it out. A newcomer only needs to show up at the table before a race to be welcomed onto a boat. Many a newcomer has visited this table, only to still be sailing decades later. “I was fortunate to be invited aboard as a crew member of a local yacht club boat for a race event. It was exciting and fun and even though I was nervous knowing very little about sailing, the crew was warm, fun, and very welcoming. I now know why people love this sport,” shares Matt Jerome, a local resident and new sailing crew member. The result is a rich yachting tradition and unique culture that mixes first-time sailors with experienced champions, often even sailing on the same boat together. Visit any of the yacht clubs on a ‘race day’ and it’s easy to see why the yachting culture on Lake Minnetonka has thrived well into its third century. While the boats have evolved over the years, the culture of inclusivity and friendly competition from the gilded age to today has not, and the Wayzata title of “Sailing Town USA” continues to be well deserved. You can be a part of this too. Why not look at one of the clubs or sailing schools mentioned above and give becoming part of “Sailing Town USA” a try?

Sleep Inside, Outside 3 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars
It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.
