LIFESTYLE LETTER

Lake Minnetonka Summers Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are ones that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhood. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Lake Minnetonka Lifestyle is all that and more. Summer is the highlight for living in the communities we call home around the Lake. Whether your July is more relaxed or it’s filled with all the activities you can possibly pack into the all too short summers of Minnesota, we have you covered in this issue. We wanted to share some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, we catch up with Bach to Rock as they ride a wave of success. We visit the National Marina of the Year: Rockvam Boat Yards. We begin a new feature: Driver’s Notebook. And we share a few pointers on staying safe in the sun so you can truly enjoy the summer with no downtime! I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our Lake Minnetonka Lifestyle offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love. No matter what, I hope to see you around the Lake!

ROCKVAM BOAT YARDS, INC. A LAKE MINNETONKA LEGACY

Roxanne Rockvam, 2022 Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year

Is there anything more enticing during our brilliant Minnesota summers than spending a long day on a boat looking out onto spectacular Lake Minnetonka? How about spending a lifetime with that view? It's been a lot of hard work by Jerry and Joyce Rockvam, owners of Rockvam Boat Yards, Inc in Spring Park. When you see their marina of today, it is an idyllic lakefront spot, but at their start, it was anything but idyllic. After leaving the U.S. Navy, they purchased a repair shop in 1961. It had a dirt floor, no electricity, no water, and no sewer. Their home sat behind the repair shop and used an oil burner for heat. But even with all the hardships, as the business expanded parcel by parcel, looking back, it was a risk worth taking. The popularity of the lake and the needs of the surrounding community grew as time went on, and Rockvam Boat Yards expanded services accordingly to meet the needs of the community. The Rockvam family has been an integral part of the Spring Park business and school community for decades. Jerry was a graduate of Orono High School, and the Rockvam family continues to support the Orono Foundation for Education. InIn fact, this past spring they donated a boat club membership to the foundation to show their support. On top of that, starting in 1965, Jerry has served as mayor of Spring Park off and on for 44 years. He and his family have been deeply invested in their community, and their community loves them back. Just this year, Rockvam Boat Yards was named National Marina of the Year, and it sounds like it was quite an honor for everyone involved. “It was a long journey and so exciting to have my parents receive the recognition for their countless hours of hard work, starting from scratch to creating a National Award Winning Marina. Wow, it still gives me goose bumps,” says Roxanne, the daughter of Jerry and Joyce. The business has always been a family affair. Roxanne and her sister were on the payroll when they were mere kids and worked at the marina through college. Roxanne is now the General Manager of Rockvam and runs the day to day operations. “Roxanne is more than an employee, she is our daughter,” Joyce says endearingly. While the next generation does not always choose the career path of their parents, Roxanne explains how she chose to carry on the Rockvam legacy. “After I graduated from the Carlson School of Management at the

University of Minnesota, I did work in Admissions for the U of M. But once we built our fourth warehouse in 1997, our entire business changed. It was a turning point that allowed me to work full time and focus on sales and customer relations and it allowed me to learn the industry. It’s an interesting industry and heavily male-dominated. I really think more women should pursue a career path in the boating field. I actually started a website called “PontoonGirl.com” to focus on women boaters and their unique lifestyle.” Roxanne has not only worked in a male-dominated industry, but has done it exceptionally well. Last year she was named the Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year. What was it like to be awarded this prestigious title? “I just was thrilled to bring the award home to Minnesota and Lake Minnetonka. Darlene Briggs was a founder of Wayzata Marine so it’s quite the honor to be recognized with the award in her name.” Helping others all summer drink up the relaxation of the lake leaves me wondering what Roxanne does when she has some time off. “For me, I love visiting marinas. It’s is the dorkiest thing ever, but I’ve visited marinas on five of the top ten party lakes in the United States. To me, visiting a marina or renting a pontoon while I’m on vacation is actually super interesting.” As the boating industry has changed over the years, so have the needs of customers. And Rockvam has responded accordingly. “Every business needs to adapt. The only way to thrive is to listen to your customers and provide the products and services they want,” says Roxanne. Boaters may come for relaxation and stunning sunsets, but when it comes to their leisure activities, they also want convenience and efficiency. “The biggest push we have made is via automation. We started with a ‘pay pump’ on our gas dock. This allows us to speed up our customer time on the

dock and allow our employees to stay focused on safety,” she shares. “In addition, we automated our launching system for our dry stack service. The addition of iPads and a program has streamlined from phone calls to using an app. It’s crazy to think that a marina would benefit from an app… but we also have a website link, storeonshore.com’, to allow you to order and pay for store items from our dock. Every efficiency helps. We are even expanding our rewards program, RockvamRewards.com, so be sure to check that out!" Over the years, docks were added and new warehouses were built. A store became part of the property and new services were added. From the humble beginnings to a full scale marina, Rockvam offers a large variety of services today. They have boats for sale. They have wet slip docking and dry stack storage. They also offer boat rentals. People can rent a boat for the day or join a boat club for the

entire season. It’s no small operation keeping all of these pieces running smoothly, but the Rockvam family proves time and time again that they are up to the challenge and continue to exceed their customers’ expectations. It's apparent that Rockvam Boat Yards has it all. Customers just need to bring the cooler and they'll be set for summer. But one question remains: is there anything big planned for the future? “As a child, after visiting Valley Fair, I thought it would be really cool to put a waterslide that ran off the top of our warehouse into the lake," Roxanne smiles. "But it would involve crossing the county road. So rather than telling me ‘no’, my dad said, ‘the county won't issue a permit’. But seriously, I still think that would be pretty neat,” she adds. It really, really would be. Progress is all about innovation. Now, who can we talk to about securing that permit?

A Bach to Rock Band Performs

The Schools of Rock ARTICLE BY GRAHAM JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

Bach to Rock Owners Judy and Jake Shoulak Share What's New with their Music School. Judy and Jake Shoulak and Family

20

K I D S COR N E R | ARTS + C ULTURE

Judy and Jake Shoulak, Mother and Son Owners of Bach to Rock

Much has happened to Judy Shoulak and her son Jake since we last spoke about their music school Bach to Rock in our December 2020 issue. I caught up with her to discuss the opening of a second center in Coon Rapids, the school’s transition to and from full quarantine protocols, and the future of Bach to Rock. Bach to Rock’s approach to music has always been to meet students of any age where they are. Rather than create strict lesson plans with specific songs, Bach to Rock works to license popular songs and then deconstruct them at several technical levels so students can play what they want, at their own complexity. There has always been an underlying ideology of the franchise: If students are enjoying playing music, they’ll stick around to learn more. And apparently that model is working. With a 40% increase in the number of classes this year, students are flocking to the school from across the metro. Because of that increase in classes, Judy and Jake opened a second Bach to Rock location in Coon Rapids last May. While opening more schools was always the idea for Judy and Jake, the pandemic had put off those plans. “After we got into the pandemic, we thought 'well let’s just try and do one new location really well',” says Judy. During that time, Judy and Jake worked hard to create a name for themselves: “Building reputation early was important. Now that we've done that, we can expand." With the school beginning to offer more and more in-person lessons, including the creation of new student bands, and continuing their annual tradition of hosting a battle of the bands, it made sense to open more locations. And here, Judy’s background in operations and franchises shines.

Before Bach to Rock, Judy was not a musician. It's her son and co-owner Jake, a guitarist since 13 who has a background in various bands and pit orchestras, that brought the musical expertise. Judy's background is in operations for companies like Buffalo Wild Wings. “We were always opening lots of restaurants,” she shares. And when it came to Bach to Rock, she expected the same thing. “That was just kind of what I thought would happen.” Judy envisions Bach to Rock opening many more locations around the cities. “We’d really like to have between four to six schools by 2025,” she adds. One key lesson Judy has taken from her background has been putting more of a focus on hiring. “It's been a secret to our success; just being very proactive about hiring. That’s where I’ve spent a majority of my time,” Judy explains. So when opening a new school, replicating Plymouth’s success comes down to building a strong culture with excellent teachers. “We feel really strongly about having people that will replicate our values and culture.” A testament to that positive culture is Bach to Rock hiring its first student as a teacher. Creating such a positive culture that its students come back to teach there was always a goal for the school, but the mission has shifted somewhat. “Our mission is still to impact lives through music, but it’s more the lives of our students and our teachers and managers.” Another step Judy has taken since first opening Bach to Rock has been to enroll herself in lessons. “It was much more fulfilling than I anticipated it to be because not only did I learn how to play the piano, but I really learned why some of the things we ask our teachers to do are so important." A Student and Teacher Work Together in the Bach to Rock Recording Studio

“Our mission is still to impact lives through music, but its more the lives of our students and our teachers and managers.” how to play songs like "Sweet Caroline" not only taught her the basics of the piano, but gave Judy a greater appreciation for both the students and teachers of Bach to Rock. “I never really understood how lessons worked. In the beginning, I’d come in fifteen minutes early to whip through my practicing, and that just didn’t work. It was so important for the instructor to have me do some kind of activity outside of lessons so I was staying engaged in learning; to give me some kind of homework.” Because of her time taking lessons from the school, Judy walked away with a tactile understanding of the lessons from the ground up, which is something she appreciates. “I’m in operations, I like to know how things work,” she says.

22

K I D S COR N E R | A RTS + CULTURE

Bach to Rock’s success with bringing music to people and meeting them where they are as a student is obvious. An aspect of the school that isn’t so obvious is its affect. “We didn’t realize how impactful it’s been,” says Jake. And that is a sentiment Judy echoes. “What we’ve been most pleased with, when it really comes down to it, is the difference we’ve been able to make in people’s lives,” she adds. Whether it’s the creation of bands, a student’s first recording, or learning how to play "Sweet Caroline", Bach to Rock continues to teach music and impact lives, and now from two great locations.

The Best Ways to Protect You and Your Family from the Sun this Summer

My worst sunburn ever was from laying out on an overcast day. I didn't expect to get much of a tan, let alone sunburnt, given the conditions. I was especially unconcerned since I couldn't see any color change at the time. But by evening, my skin was a bright pinkish-red, and the pain set in. I couldn't wear clothes and had to call in sick for two days. Aside from severe sunburn, there are other equally important reasons to take extra precautions in the sun, especially during the hot summer months.

Skin cancer is the most widely recognized health problem resulting from sun exposure. To reduce your risk: • Avoid afternoon sun. • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least fifteen minutes before you go out. Reapply every two hours. • Look for products carrying the Skin Cancer Foundation's blue seal of approval. • Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs as well as a hat to shade your face. The sun's rays also damage our eyes. Exposure can cause cataracts and damage the retina, cornea, and lens. Cheryl Khanna, M.D. of Mayo Clinic, recommends wearing sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Some sunglass designs offer even better protection. The best designs to block out as much UV rays as possible are wrap around or close-fitting sunglasses. The risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion also increase during warmer months. It's important to drink several glasses of water every day of the year, but especially during the summer months. If you'll be in the sun or heat for any length of time, take plenty of water with you. Better yet, carry sports drinks. They contain electrolytes which regulate chemical reactions and maintain the balance between fluids inside and outside your cells. Also, try to restrict outdoor physical activity to cooler parts of the day to avoid overheating, dehydration, and heatstroke.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR BABIES Sun exposure also increases the risk of cancer in children. This is of particular concern for babies because of their sensitive skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a sunburn on a baby can be much more serious and result in high fever, dehydration, blistering, and heatstroke. To protect babies from the sun, keep them out of direct sunlight from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M. Dress them in lightweight clothing that fully covers their bodies and keep their heads covered with hats or sunbonnets with 4” brims. For travel, place babies in the center position of the back seat, or cover the car windows with UV-blocking film. Also, to keep infants and young children hydrated, carry Pedialyte, which is an excellent source of electrolytes. Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors and warm sun, but it's also a time to protect yourself and your family from dangerous rays and high temps. No one wants to wake up with a bad sunburn in the middle of July. By taking the necessary precautions to stay safe in the sun, you'll be able to enjoy summer days on the lake with your family and friends without any downtime.
