Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world — a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away; to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it every day. March is our Home issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts, regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. Yet, it's fun to look at beautiful homes to imagine a change of scenery or dream about needed renovations. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside a home with history, examine a “whole home” approach to reimagining a kitchen, and share the story of a hometown business. Finally, our friends at Bull and Wren invite us to join them and feel right at home for days of revelry as they celebrate St. Paddy’s in the heart of Excelsior! This issue is expanded as we continue to have more businesses want to partner with us, and we are planning more growth and more content in the coming months. Remember to support local shops, restaurants, and businesses in our neighborhoods, and I hope to see you around the Lake.

Bull & Wren in Downtown Excelsior Goes All Out for St. Patrick’s Day. 14

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

ARTICLE BY GRAHAM JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, downtown Excelsior’s Bull & Wren takes its celebrating very seriously. From the Irish dancers to green beer and corned beef, “Paddy’s is about the party, and we want to be the place for that,” the restaurant says. Months of planning go into their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and this year the party is spanning four full days. All that time spent brining corned beef, scheduling live music, and ordering the famous green beer makes Bull & Wren’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration the place to celebrate all things Ireland. While the Irish gastropub breaks from the traditional pub fare on their menu, the celebrations stay fervently traditional on St. Paddy’s. Starting Wednesday the 16th, dubbed “St. Practice Day,” Bull & Wren will kick off celebrations with live music from the pub’s ever-popular Irish Brigade featuring Mike Wallace, samplings of Red Lock’s Irish whiskey, and giveaways for Paddy’s Day. On the day of the holiday, Thursday, March 17th, the pub will have live music for a full eleven hours starting at noon. Entertainment will range from bagpipes to performances by the Eillis Irish Dance Academy as well as feature several Irish bands including Inland Seas and St. George’s Folly. “It’s very much a long standing relationship,” says the staff. Bull & Wren strives to be a pub for the neighborhood. They focus on building memories and lasting relationships with the community. “We hope to become an annual tradition for the people of Excelsior. St. Patrick’s Day is about coming together as a community and celebrating our heritage.” The pub plans to put on four days of events, and entertainment to bring people together. “We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone!”

“WE HOPE TO BECOME AN ANNUAL TRADITION FOR THE PEOPLE OF EXCELSIOR. ST. PATRICK’S DAY IS ABOUT COMING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE.”

The St. Patrick’s Day menu is, of course, corned beef and cabbage, Guinness, and green beer. The chefs at Bull & Wren walk me through the process of preparing their corned beef: “We slow cook it for about eight to ten hours in a pickle juice and a house blend of pickling spices and different curing salts. We cook it for a really long time at a very low heat so it gets tender, where it falls apart yet holds shape.” The very next day, Bull & Wren’s celebration continues with the “Post Paddy’s Party.” Friday the 18th the restaurant will see tastings and giveaways from the local brewery Utepils as well as live music from Shane Martin starting at 8:00 P.M.

16

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

Finally, Bull & Wren opens early Saturday morning at 9:00 A.M. for its final day of St. Patrick’s celebrations. They’ll offer a “Kegs and Eggs” classic Irish breakfast. Their traditional Irish breakfast features rasher bacon, black and white pudding, grilled tomato, mushrooms, eggs, and house-made treacle bread. The chefs explain that rasher bacon is pork loin cured and sugared. “It’s not your average bacon.” And as to be expected, the only pair for such a breakfast is “Guinness or green beer.” Similar to on St. Patrick’s Day proper, Bull & Wren expects a lot of foot traffic on Saturday from both the Luck o’ the

Lake 5k that ends in downtown Excelsior as well as the tent party on Water Street. To accommodate, the pub’s patio along with their string of heaters will be open for festivities “regardless of the weather”. Besides the breakfast, Bull & Wren will host personalized Guinness glass etchings as well as even more live music from the Hudson Irish Dance Academy in the afternoon and the band JJ and the Guys starting at 8:30 P.M. So for your fill of Irish celebrations, from live music and Irish dancing to green beer and the best Irish breakfast around, Bull & Wren aims to “go all out” and looks forward to celebrating with you.

SAWHILL KITCHENS CREATES BEAUTIFUL SPACES WITH HOMEOWNER & WHOLE HOME IN MIND.

DE S IG N S

Eric & Jill, Homeowners

ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN

Over the last two years we‘ve become intimately familiar with our homes and perhaps noticed a few things that need changing. Like that drawer you have to slam shut to close properly, or the overcrowded countertops from experimental air fryers and bread makers. (Sourdough, though!) With our kitchens doubling as offices, plus living rooms turned into impromptu classrooms, the thought of remodeling is prevalent. And fixing what’s broken, creating more space, or a complete reimagining of your home is what Sawhill Custom Kitchen & Design does best. “Make things better, it’s one of our core values,” says Sawhill President Matt Cook. Sawhill Kitchens offers custom luxury design and remodeling services for the Twin Cities and surrounding areas, with a showroom in International Market Square. Sawhill provides a full-service design-build model, guiding clients through their entire process. Their designers and project managers collaborate with clients to design the project from concept to completion. Sawhill’s success as a full-service design and build business comes from a long held philosophy and approach to remodeling.

BUILDING SOMETHING MORE With kitchen remodels, a similar pattern develops. It’s the clichéd “copy this picture” mentality, thus tearing everything out and putting in all new and trendy items. “And while it’s beautiful, the remodel is done without any consideration of how it works within the existing home,” explains Matt. So your beautiful remodeled kitchen might have all the latest trends, but when going between rooms, the little differences feel off. “Our approach is to look at the entire house. What does the exterior look like, what kind of neighborhood, what is the history? Is the house English Tudor? Colonial? What elements give the home its unique architecture?” The Sawhill team carefully considers the home’s existing elements and architecture, then highlights and preserves its best features in the remodel design. “We want a level of consistency with the existing house. So when you walk in, it looks beautiful, but it also looks like it’s meant to be.”

INNOVATION IN PRACTICE Matt describes a recent Eden Prairie remodel. The client expressed to Sawhill designer Tricia Tidemann that they wished to “open up the space and allow natural light to flow through the house.” The homeowners also expressed that they enjoy cooking, so second on the list was to upgrade the kitchen to be more functional, including replacing outmoded appliances.

While the home has plenty of windows, a wall dividing the kitchen and dining room blocked most light. Tricia designed an open floor plan, which included tearing out the wall and existing door openings and replacing them with cased arches, allowing more light in. The biggest challenge was tying in the unique, rich millwork and flooring integrated throughout the house. “The home has a bit of a more traditional feel, and we wanted to incorporate those same elements in the remodel. We also added light blues and whites, with warm tones on beams for an inviting element that blends well with the rest of the house.” The Sawhill team also re-did the flooring to match the original, installed high-quality cabinetry, updated appliances and new countertops before focusing their skills on the home’s main level, refurbishing the fireplace with new stone, millwork, and remodeling an entertainment area. “We’re best known for amazing kitchens,” says Matt, “but many times one project grows into other areas of the home to include mudrooms, laundry rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms.” As with the recent remodel, functionality and a well-organized kitchen are spot on. The Design team sees requests for

20

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN

spice-rack drawers on one side of the range and knife-inserts in drawers on the other, along with a move toward larger drawers that fit all your pots, pans, and dishes. Kitchens are also incorporating small bar areas for coffee, wine, and beer. “That’s where people entertain, in the kitchen, instead of going to a basement bar, they can have it all in one space.” The Designers are seeing a comeback of stain, warm colors, woods, brownand gold-toned paints and countertops, and brass.

THE PERFECT REMODEL Matt advises, “Slow down and figure out the best options, what exactly needs to be done, and then you can make decisions.” Rushing through a design to achieve budget numbers without digging into details can lead to unwelcome delays, surprises, or reworks. By slowing down and prioritizing, you can design a space that truly fits your vision and the overall home, not just today, but for many years to come. With light flowing through the Eden Prairie remodel, the Sawhill philosophy is working. “The clients are so happy and loving their new kitchen/ family area. The best moments for us are when we see that our clients are thrilled.”

THAT OUR CLIENTS ARE THRILLED.”

A House with a History THE LEGACY OF A FARMHOUSE BUILT IN 1904 IS CARRIED ON BY IT’S OWNERS.

ARTICLE BY JEN LARSEN FORTNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA KOSTOCHKO

Whether a brand-new build or listed on the historic register, every property has an origin story, although some far more interesting than others. When we moved into our Shorewood house in 1998, the flyer describes a ten-year-old “charming dollhouse”. Charming dollhouse was dead accurate as it is darling indeed, but doesn’t have nearly enough closet space. Contrast this with the thoughtfully planned, spacious property at 4375 Shady Lane, new on the market for the first time in 40 years.

24

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

This property dates back to 1904 and was part of a working dairy farm, and a very high-end one for the era. Historic records describe a 1,000-acre farm complete with a large home, heated barns, greenhouses, and state of the art facilities for the animals; each cow had its very own window. While the world and neighborhood morphed around it, the home has remained relatively the same as when it was built. This house boasts only four owners in 118 years. The most recent owners raised their five children there and have retained the integrity and spirit of the original structure, making virtually no

changes. Dustin Brakemeier, the second eldest of the Brakemeier children, recalls an idyllic childhood at the Shady Lane house, utilizing the woods as a playground for endless wilderness adventures. “We even made our very own bobsled trail. It was during the Olympics. My friends and I dug a channel and put up logs as barriers so we could sled down the hill.” A highlight in the living room is the remarkable built-in upright grand piano. This unique feature is the last of its kind in Minnesota. Mahogany cove moldings, original windows with leaded panes, intricate crown molding, and electric lightbulbs

built into cove paneling are still intact. The ballroom features a fireplace with an intricately carved mantle. The spacious room is equipped to hold a large number of guests and is perfect for entertaining. For the last ten years it has been home to actual ballroom dance lessons taught by Robert and Jennifer Foster. The land the property sits on is also quite special. The 1.25-acre parcel abuts Lake Minnetonka Regional Park, so much of the view outside is of a nature preserve. One of Dustin’s favorite features of his childhood home is the porch that oversees both Lake Minnetonka and the woods. “It’s a very peaceful area.” Chris Dennis with Lakes Area Realty says the view out the master bedroom is the longest view available on Lake Minnetonka that he is aware of. Owners can see all the way to Spring Park Bay from the master window, nearly a fivemile stretch. But is this old house livable for a 2022 lifestyle? Chris says, “When a buyer sees the house, it’s laid out well beyond modern standards.” As if the original owner had a crystal ball, the bedrooms are sizeable, there are numerous built-ins for storage, and the former servants’ quarters are equipped with

26

a jack and jill bathroom and separate stairwell. Ideal for a modern-day family with children. Ideal for having houseguests, but allowing for privacy as well. Dustin reflects, “As a child we didn’t realize what we had. We didn’t realize we were blessed with this exceptional house. Our whole goal is for another family to make great memories here.” It is no small undertaking to renovate a historic home. The hope is that a buyer will fall in love with the legacy of this special property and make

updates consistent with the soul of this estate. I’m struck by the consistent thread among the people who have lived in the Shady Lane house: they have all had an abiding respect for the care and craftsmanship that went into building such a home. They truly don’t build them like they used to. Old world grandeur plus the option to breathe brand new function into this beauty. What a rare opportunity to be one of only a handful of owners of this enduring piece of Minnetonka history.

Fazendin Realtors Goes Above & Beyond for their Community.

Fazendin Realtors

28

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | R EA L E STATE

Roger “Andy” Fazendin, Owner & Broker of Fazendin Realtors

For more than 55 years, Fazendin Realtors has provided the Twin Cities metro with top-of-the-line real estate services. At the end of the day, what has kept them going is helping families in the community find their next home, and offering personalized service to each and every client. In 1965, Fazendin Realtors started in the backroom of an ice cream shop in Wayzata. The family-run business has grown tremendously since their humble beginnings, but the level of customer service and treating others with the care and attention they deserve remains the same. “The founder and my grandfather, Roger Fazendin, was just an excellent human being,” says Roger “Andy” Fazendin, who is currently the owner and broker of Fazendin Realtors. “He was a World War II vet and he was an artist; he was a very creative person.” While times have changed, the principle that guides Fazendin Realtors remains the same: “We still do the right thing. Do it ethically, and ultimately that will pay dividends in the end.”

PUSHING FORWARD While Roger was much more of the creative type, and a fantastic salesman, he set the company up for success by focusing on developing neighborhoods and then selling them. However, once his son, Dan Fazendin, got involved in the mid-1970s, things really started to take off. “He brought in much more business acumen to the business. Less of an artist, and more of a methodical business person. He set the company up with a great financial footing,” Andy shares. “We were able to survive in the early 1980s when interest rates shot up. We were one of dozens of small family-owned real estate companies, and by 1984 we were the only one left. We did that by consolidating very quickly, and we really held down the fort.”

Throughout the past 55 years, Fazendin Realtors has been able to maintain their status as family-owned and operated, and they have not been bought out by bigger entities. “I think that has really set us apart.”

HIRING THE BEST OF THE BEST A successful business would be nothing without the people working there, and Fazendin Realtors is no exception. “We have always taken great care in deciding which agents we bring on, and I have learned through very successful business people that is the thing to really pay attention to the most,” explains Andy. The business wants agents they feel will jive well with the company’s cohesive culture, are driven to succeed, and are committed to serving their clients real estate needs. “You have to surround yourself with good people, with the people who will bring you success.” All of the agents at Fazendin Realtors are fully trained and work full-time. There are no part-time agents, which means customers can expect the best kind of service. “What our customers can expect and what they deserve is a fully knowledgeable and experienced agent. We really try for this customized approach for our clients. We view our clients as people and as family units, not just a number that will help us reach a sales goal.” What sets Fazendin apart from other corporate realtor groups is their ability to really be nimble and flexible as things in the market change. “We also have a great group of cohesive agents. We collaborate a lot, especially these past couple of years when the market has really been crazy and evolving. This is a huge benefit for our clients,” Andy says. “When you hire Fazendin Realtors you aren’t just hiring one person, you are hiring this whole group of agents that is working together cohesively as well as a very large support staff.”

“To me, getting involved with this was a no-brainer because of who it supports. These are the people who keep us healthy and safe.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Fazendin Realtors also strives to not only be leaders in providing excellent real estate service, but show up for the communities they support. “Being good community members is one thing, but we want to take that to the next level. We want to be leaders and get involved in the local organizations that we serve.” Currently, Fazendin Realtors supports a variety of churches, youth sports teams, and encourages their agents and brokers to get involved in the community with what they are passionate about—whether that be coaching a local team or getting involved in local schools. The business started the Community Cares committee, which is an idea that came directly from the Fazendin agents in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the following unrest. “It’s no secret that the real estate industry has been culpable in the misdeeds in the lack of fairness in housing in the Twin Cities,” Andy shares. “That really bothers us, and we want to try to correct some of those wrongs.” The initiative gives back to the community in ways such as food drives and supporting organizations who help families and children move into stabilized housing. Fazendin Realtors also founded Housing for Heroes, an exclusive program that provides direct rebates to active and retired veterans, firefighters, police officers, and emergency

medical technicians who are buying or selling a home. “To me, getting involved with this was a no-brainer because of who it supports. These are the people who keep us healthy and safe.” In the future, Fazendin Realtors would like to start their own foundation. “This is my ultimate goal, that way we can give back to the community with our own proceeds and in a much more organized fashion,” adds Andy.

CONTINUING THE LEGACY Fazendin Realtors believes in a bright future, and the principles laid by their founder is what will guide them into the next 50 years. “Our goal is not to be the biggest, but to be the best. For me, that means our agent group to be the most productive real estate brokerage in the state of Minnesota.” Incrementally improving every single day, providing adequate training, and continuing to collaborate as a team is how they will push forward and continue to be of service to the communities they work in. Andy continues, “We aren’t groundbreaking, but we are certainly staying ahead of the curve and being flexible. Because of our size we can stay ahead of the competitors, and change quickly if we need, with the ultimate goal of providing our clients with the best service. This is an organization that I am very proud to lead.”

Daphne Oz: Beautiful Evenings at Home Emmy-winning TV Host & NY Times Bestselling Author Shares her Dinner Hosting Favorites

New York Times bestselling author Daphne Oz talks about her newest book, “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food to Celebrate Eating Clean,” which launches in April. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn more about her journey to home entertainment.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ: I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant

Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
