LIFESTYLE LETTER
More Than a Look - A Letter From the Publisher There’s something interesting about the word style. Most of us immediately think about fashion. Maybe it's the perfect pair of jeans, a favorite handbag, or that outfit you reach for because it simply makes you feel good. (Apparently, barrel jeans are having a moment ... and after reading our cover story, I might be convinced.) But style is so much more than what we wear. It's reflected in the businesses we build, the way we welcome people, the details we notice, and the care we put into our work. Style is really an expression of who we are. It's confidence, creativity, and intention working together. That's exactly what you'll discover throughout this issue. Our cover story introduces you to Katie Woodard, owner of Apricot Lane Boutique in Kingwood. Katie has created more than a boutique—she’s created a place where women can discover clothing that helps them feel confident at every stage of life. Her approach isn't about chasing every trend but about helping women find pieces that fit their personality, their lifestyle, and yes, maybe even convincing a few of us to try barrel jeans. You'll also meet Laura Bailey, owner of The Accounting Agency LLC. At first glance, accounting may seem like an unexpected fit for a Style Issue, but Laura's story quickly proves otherwise. She has intentionally built a polished, approachable brand while helping families and business owners gain confidence through financial clarity. It's a reminder that confidence isn't only about how you look—it's also about understanding where you stand. This month, we're also celebrating the talented photographers who continue to shape the visual identity of Lake Houston City Lifestyle. Their creativity captures moments that tell stories long before the first paragraph is read. You'll also discover stories rooted in purpose. Meet the inspiring family behind med•lē, whose handbag company was founded to create a lasting legacy for their son while giving back to organizations changing lives. Learn about Taste of the Town Lake Houston, where local restaurants come together to support Inspire ND. And we're honored to highlight Project Mammogram and The Village Centers, two organizations creating hope, opportunity, and lasting impact every day. As you turn these pages, I hope you'll be reminded that style is about much more than appearances. It's reflected in the choices we make, the work we create, and the lives we touch. Those are the kinds of stories that never go out of style.

53rd Annual Kingwood 4th of July Parade 8-17: For 53 years, the Kingwood 4th of July Parade has been a cherished Independence Day tradition, bringing generations together to celebrate our nation’s freedom. This year’s theme, America’s 250th Birthday, commemorated a historic milestone while honoring the values of service, sacrifice, and unity that continue to shape our country. As neighbors gathered along the parade route and participants proudly represented local organizations, businesses, schools, and first responders, we celebrated not only our nation’s history but also the traditions that continue to bring our community together year after year.

A Boutique Experience Designed With Every Woman in Mind
There is something special about a woman who has always known exactly what she wanted to do. For Katie Woodard, owner of Apricot Lane Boutique in Kingwood, that journey began long before she ever unlocked the doors to her own business. As a young girl, she would wake up at 5 a.m. to accompany her mother to Macy’s inventory shifts, soaking in the sights and sounds of retail before most children were even awake. “I’ve always loved retail,” Woodard says. “It never feels like work to me.” That passion eventually evolved into a dream: opening a boutique of her own. There was just one condition—it had to be in Kingwood. Woodard spent years researching business opportunities and carefully evaluating what would be the best fit. She wanted more than a store. She wanted to create an experience that reflected the community she already knew and loved. “I knew who I was buying for before I ever opened the doors,” she says. That understanding has proven invaluable during Apricot Lane’s first year. While trends may dominate social media feeds, Woodard believes successful retail is about knowing the people in your backyard. In Kingwood, that means balancing timeless staples with just enough trend to keep things fresh. Today, approximately 20 percent of the boutique’s inventory leans heavily into current fashion trends, while the rest focuses on versatile pieces women can wear season after season. Her current favorite? Barrel jeans.
“When they first came out, I thought they were ridiculous,” she laughs. “Now I’m having a moment with them. They’re flattering on so many body types and have just enough personality to stand out.” Woodard’s approach to fashion is rooted in accessibility. Size inclusivity is not a marketing phrase for her; rather, it is one of the guiding principles behind the boutique. She has intentionally created a space where various ages can shop together and each leave with something they love. “Moms and daughters can both shop here,” she says. “That’s what I’m trying to create.” The boutique also offers a range of price points, which was another intentional choice designed to make shopping feel welcoming rather than exclusive. Whether someone is searching for a statement piece, dependable wardrobe basics, or an outfit for a special occasion, Woodard wants every guest to feel seen, supported, and excited about what she takes home. For many women, walking into a boutique can feel intimidating. Woodard understands that reality. Some customers are self-conscious about their arms. Others struggle to find clothing that fits their shape or simply feel stuck in a style rut. She sees those moments as opportunities. One of her favorite success stories involves an employee named Jennifer, who initially lacked confidence in her personal style. By helping her discover pieces that complemented both her personality and comfort level, Woodard watched her confidence blossom. CONTINUED >

“She was glowing,” Woodard recalls. “That’s why you do it. That’s why it doesn’t feel like work.” That personalized touch is something online retailers simply cannot replicate. While shoppers may arrive looking for familiar basics, Woodard is often quietly gathering additional pieces outside the fitting room. By the time customers emerge, they frequently leave with outfits they never would have selected themselves. “I dressed a woman for her first date in years,” she says. “Nine times out of 10, they leave with what I picked.” Woodard’s own wardrobe essentials are refreshingly classic: a great pair of jeans, a blazer, a jean jacket, a casual dress, and, of course, a little black dress. Still, she believes fashion is about more than clothing. Taking an extra 10 minutes to accessorize or elevate an outfit can completely transform how a woman feels. “It impacts your mood, your confidence, and your energy,” she says. As for aspiring entrepreneurs, Woodard’s advice is simple: do your research, surround yourself with knowledgeable people, and make sure you’re ready for the commitment. “It is not for the faint of heart,” she says. Fortunately for Kingwood, she was. ApricotLaneBoutique.com/store/kingwood

Some of the Lake Houston area’s best restaurants and vendors are coming together for one flavorful evening—and every bite supports a meaningful cause. Taste of the Town Lake Houston returns Thurs., Sept. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Humble Civic Center, where attendees can enjoy tastings from more than 35 local restaurants, bakeries, and beverage vendors while supporting Inspire ND’s mission of creating more inclusive communities for individuals with neurodiversity. Now in its fifth year, the event has become one of the Lake Houston area’s signature community gatherings, with more than 700 attendees expected. “It’s a fun night out that benefits a good cause,” says Erica Johnston, director of development & outreach for Inspire ND. “Taste of the Town is much more than a food event. It’s an opportunity to sample incredible local cuisine, support area businesses, spend time with friends and family, and make a meaningful impact.” Enjoy everything from barbecue and Cajun specialties to pastries, coffee, and sweet treats from returning favorites,
including Chick-fil-A, Fire Craft BBQ , Graze Craze, Texas Roadhouse, and Yummy Tummy Pastries, along with newcomers such as Fig and Table Coffee Co., Dreaux’s Creole & Cajun Seafood, and HTeaO. The Accounting Agency Brings Clarity, Confidence, and Approachability to Personal and Business Finances

“Accurate accounting helps you be proactive instead of reactive,” she says. Laura Milner-Bailey knows that presentation matters. As owner of The Accounting Agency LLC, she has built a brand that feels polished and approachable. Her Instagram reflects an eye for style, but beneath the fashionable outfits is a deeper message: confidence also comes from understanding where you stand financially. For Milner-Bailey, entrepreneurship was inspired by personal loss and a powerful example. In 2021, shortly after the birth of her daughter, MilnerBailey lost her mother. Her mother had always been an entrepreneur, owning a spa in Alexandria, Egypt, then rebuilding in Dubai after the revolution. Watching that courage left a lasting impression. “I always wanted to own my own business,” Milner-Bailey says. At first, she considered opening a boutique because of her love for fashion. Yet when she began developing a business plan, she realized her greatest strength was already in front of her. Her education and career were rooted in accounting, so she built around what she knew best. The Accounting Agency was created not only to serve clients, but also to provide flexibility for women pursuing careers in accounting. Milner-Bailey wanted a workplace where women managing busy lives could create their own schedules and continue growing professionally. That thoughtful approach is reflected in the company’s image. Milner-Bailey knew accounting could feel intimidating, formal, or impersonal. She spent nearly a year preparing the brand before launching because she wanted clients to feel the firm was credible and sophisticated without feeling stuffy. “I wanted it to have a certain style to it,” she says. Her approach to client service follows the same philosophy. Rather than simply sending financial reports or tax documents, Milner-Bailey takes time to explain what the numbers mean in everyday language. She understands many people feel anxious discussing money.
“What I enjoy most is teaching clients something new about what is going on with their situation,” she says. For Milner-Bailey, knowledge creates confidence. Even when finances are tight, understanding why, knowing what can change, and having a realistic plan can bring peace of mind. Financial stress can affect every area of life, but clarity helps people move forward rather than feeling trapped. That is why she encourages families to begin with one of the simplest tools available—a budget. Milner-Bailey recommends identifying income, fixed expenses, and flexible spending, then comparing the budget with what is actually happening each month. Many people are surprised to discover where their money is going. Once they see the full picture, they can identify gaps, find opportunities to save, and make decisions with greater intention. She also believes building an emergency fund remains one of the most timeless financial principles—even setting aside a modest amount consistently can create security. For business owners, Milner-Bailey stresses the importance of accurate accounting from the beginning. Too often, entrepreneurs wait until their books become overwhelming or tax season exposes a problem. Reliable accounting does more than keep records organized. It allows owners to plan proactively, monitor tax obligations, understand performance, and make informed decisions before challenges become costly. “Accurate accounting helps you be proactive instead of reactive,” she says. Her career has given her a broad view of business operations. Milner-Bailey double majored in accounting and supply chain, beginning in inventory control and warehouse management before moving deeper into accounting. That operational background helped her understand how departments connect and why financial decisions create frustration when they are not clearly communicated. CONTINUED >

Over time, her appreciation for tax strategy also grew. What once felt like the least appealing side of accounting became more meaningful as she saw how closely tax decisions connect to bookkeeping, classification, and long-term planning. One of Milner-Bailey’s most rewarding experiences has been watching a young business owner grow from the beginning. After more than two years of working together, Milner-Bailey was able to show the client historical data illustrating how far the business had come. “It was like a light bulb went off,” she says. Seeing the growth on paper gave the client a clearer understanding of her success and encouraged her to explore new opportunities. Milner-Bailey is now expanding The Accounting Agency’s offerings to include additional tax planning, tax strategies, and CFO-level services. Her goal is to help individuals and business owners look beyond annual tax preparation and build plans that support their future. Fashion may express confidence on the outside, but financial understanding builds it from within. Milner-Bailey proves that when style, preparation, and purpose come together, confidence truly never goes out of fashion. TheAccountingAgencyLLC.com

“We wanted to make something whimsical, fun, and indestructible.” —Gena Smith When Gena Smith and her husband, Mike, sat down for dinner in 2017, they weren't searching for their next business venture. They were searching for a way to better support their son, Jackson, who has Down Syndrome. With occupational therapy, physical therapy, reading intervention, and copious appointments, the costs of giving Jackson every opportunity to thrive continued to mount. That evening, one simple observation inspired an idea. "My husband looked around the restaurant and said, 'Everybody is carrying handbags,'" Gena recalls. The couple envisioned something that would be different than what was already on the market. These handbags would reflect Jackson's joyful personality while withstanding everyday life. "We wanted to make something whimsical, fun, and indestructible," recalls Gena, with a smile.
Inspired by the durable material of the Crocs shoes Jackson loved, they created med•lē Handbags, a collection of customizable handbags fashioned from lightweight, easy-to-clean EVA material. Each design features interchangeable bodies, handles, and liners, allowing customers to create various looks from a single bag. "We didn't want it to be boring," Gena says. "Jackson is vibrant and expressive. We wanted his personality to shine through everything we created." The response was immediate. Following a successful 2018 fashion show featuring local designers, med•lē expanded into boutiques across Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, while showcasing collections at the Dallas Market Center and the Galleria Houston. Momentum was building until the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly closed retail opportunities. "COVID devastated med•lē Handbags, but it didn't kill it," Gena says. Rather than walking away, the Smith family kept moving forward. Today, the handbags are available online and through Gena's Planet Beach wellness studio, with every purchase continuing to support Jackson's specialized needs. "We never gave up," she says. "The business was never just about handbags. It was always about helping Jackson." This sentiment remains stitched into every detail. The company itself is named after the couple's daughter, Medley, ensuring both children are represented in the family's story. "If you have a dream, share it with people," she says. "You don't know who they know or how they'll help. We couldn't have done this alone." To explore the full med•lē collection or create a handbag that's uniquely your own, visit ShopMedLe.com. A Legacy of Lifesaving Hope The In the Pink Northeast Luncheon Celebrates 25 Years of Project Mammogram Each fall, hundreds from the community gather in a sea of pink to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and help ensure every woman has access to lifesaving breast health care. This year, the 17th Annual In the Pink Northeast Luncheon will be held Fri., Oct. 30, at the Humble Civic Center. The event, for which triple-negative breast cancer survivor Nikki Adams will serve as honorary co-chair, will carry special significance as guests commemorate the 25th anniversary of Project Mammogram. As the Northeast Hospital Foundation’s premier fundraiser, the luncheon is the largest source of financial support for Project Mammogram, a program serving eligible uninsured and underinsured women across Northeast Houston. More than 600 guests are expected to attend. A complimentary champagne reception, bid board, raffle, and boutique shopping will begin at 10 a.m., followed by lunch and the seated program at 11:30 a.m. The program will include survivor recognition, moving personal stories, and important conversations about early detection. Together, these moments illustrate the luncheon’s central message that no woman should face barriers to potentially lifesaving care. “This luncheon brings our entire community together around women and families who need us,” says Brooke Baugh, director of

development and programs for the Northeast Hospital Foundation. “It is a celebration, but it is also a reminder of why this work remains so important.” Project Mammogram began with a $5,000 gift from the Kingwood Women’s Club. Over the past 25 years, it has grown into a comprehensive program that has provided more than 13,000 Northeast Houston residents with breast health services. Today, the program funds screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, biopsies, and patient navigation at no cost for eligible women. Through partnerships with Memorial Hermann Northeast and The Rose, patients receive guidance from their initial screening through diagnosis and, when necessary, treatment. “I don't just coordinate care,” says Project Mammogram coordinator Silvia Torres. “I help bridge the gap between fear and hope for the women who need it most, especially those who face financial hardship and health disparities.”

Funds raised during the luncheon will also help Project Mammogram broaden its reach. A new partnership with Memorial Hermann Neighborhood Health Centers assists women who need a physical examination and a physician’s order before receiving a mammogram. An expanded partnership with The Rose will bring mobile mammography events into communities across the foundation’s 26-ZIP-code service area. “Every year, we ask ourselves where the gaps are,” Baugh says. “Then we look for ways to remove those barriers so women can receive lifesaving screenings.” The luncheon also creates an elevated platform for breast health education. diagnosis during her lifetime, organizers hope every guest leaves empowered to prioritize her health and to encourage others to do the same. Project Mammogram partners with the national Know Your Lemons campaign to teach women about the 12 visible signs of breast cancer, expanding awareness beyond the presence of a lump. During the luncheon, education becomes intimate as survivors and families share how early detection and self-advocacy shaped their journeys. “We don’t always put ourselves on our own to-do list,” Baugh says. “Schedule your mammogram every year, but if you notice something before then, don’t wait. Be your own advocate until someone listens.” City Lifestyle is proud to partner with the foundation as the community gathers to honor 25 years of lifesaving hope and ensure this vital work continues. FOR 26 YEARS, THE VILLAGE CENTERS HAS EMPOWERED ADULTS WITH IDD TO BUILD INDEPENDENCE, PURPOSE, AND LASTING CONNECTIONS What began with two determined mothers has grown into a lifeline for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across Greater Houston. The Village Centers was founded in 2000 by Kimberly Brusatori and Linda Schuiten. As their children approached adulthood, they discovered there were very few meaningful opportunities available after high school for individuals with IDD. Rather than accept that reality, they chose to create something better.

Today, the nonprofit serves more than 130 individuals ages 18 and older each month through adult day programs, vocational training, residential services, transportation, and Home and Community Based Services (HCS). "We focus on ability rather than disability," says Kinsey Crabtree, director of development at The Village Centers. "Every Villager has unique talents, goals, and dreams. Instead of asking what someone cannot do, we ask what support they need to succeed." The organization offers individualized programming for adults 18 and older, including employment readiness, lifeskills training, and partnerships with businesses such as Kohl's, McDonald's, and Walgreens. This fall, The Village Centers is also launching a new transitional program for young adults ages 18 to 22, helping bridge the gap between high school and
adulthood through career exploration and vocational training. The Village Centers also operates five staffed community homes where residents receive personalized support while building independence, developing daily living skills, and participating in community life. Crabtree says the organization's mission extends beyond its campus. "Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have incredible abilities, talents and potential," she says. "They deserve the same opportunities to learn, work, build relationships, and contribute to our community." Community members can support the mission by volunteering, hiring Villagers, touring the campus, or attending The Village Centers' annual Masquerade Ball gala on Sept. 25. The gala will feature auctions, entertainment, and stories celebrating the organization's impact. TheVillageCenters.org
