Planting Roots, Crafting Community

When my family and I chose Kingwood as our home, we weren’t just looking for a new zip code. We were searching for a place to truly belong, a community where we could grow our business, create lasting relationships, and raise our children with purpose. To me, home is the steady heartbeat behind everything we do. It is the sanctuary where our most meaningful stories are written and where we learn to live with intention.

In this issue, we celebrate the neighbors who help us craft that profound sense of belonging. We find inspiration in Kenny and Colleen Hoyt of Lakeside Floors, whose commitment to service reflects the very best of our local spirit. They understand that a new floor is the stage upon which a family’s life unfolds. We also see incredible resilience in, my husband, Mike Cook of ProRoofing, who took the leap to move from South Carolina to Texas. His story proves that home isn't just where you start, but where you choose to plant your legacy and grow alongside your neighbors.

We also explore the calm power of an intentional environment. Melissa Martinez of Honeybees Organizing Solutions, LLC shares how an organized home allows a family to breathe again, replacing chaos with peace. This is echoed by Marcey Rogers of Dynamize Real Estate, who reminds us that to dynamize a space is to make it feel alive, turning a house into a soulful home where you can truly see your future taking shape.

Beyond our front doors, the heart of our community continues at St. Mary Magdalene school. Under the leadership of Principal Lois Goudeau, the school acts as a cornerstone of our collective home, nurturing the next generation with the same care we give our own families.

Our publication family is growing as well. We are proud to welcome Porter City Lifestyle into our fold as we continue to champion the unique spirit of NE Houston and East Montgomery County. This expansion is a testament to the vibrant, interconnected community we all share. As you turn these pages, I hope you see more than just beautiful homes. I hope you see a reflection of the life you are so lovingly cultivating right here alongside us.

REPUTATION BUILT ON HOMETOWN RESULTS

ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA MCCOURT
“WE TELL PEOPLE TO TAKE A BREATH,” COLLEEN HOYT SAYS.
“JUST DO ONE THING AT A TIME,” KENNY HOYT ADDS.
How trust, repeat customers, and recommendations shaped Lakeside flooring, a provider into our hometown story

In Lake Houston, reputation does not travel through flashy ads or billboards. For Lakeside Floors, the customer experience is the top priority. It’s a trust that has been earned in communal moments of uncertainty.

Owners Colleen and Kenny Hoyt are less about business and more about the people they interact with over the years, day in and day out. Like when a home has flooded, when a budget is stretched thin, when a relocation happens faster than planned, or when a family home must be prepped for sale under tight deadlines. These are not ideal

conditions for decision-making, yet they are often the stories homeowners carry when they walk into the showroom. The people at Lakeside Floors provide a place to pause, ask questions, and regain peace or clarity under pressure.

That role became especially clear during Hurricane Harvey. Colleen recalled customers dropping in just to sit in the showroom, to escape the chaos of what was happening outside. People cried, shared stories, and waited together. Some recognized one another not as shoppers, but as neighbors who had crossed paths during rescues. One homeowner realized the person sitting nearby was the same individual who had saved them from their flooded home.

That sense of care extends beyond Colleen and Kenny. Customers often describe feeling respected by the staff in their own homes, noting the professionalism and consideration shown during each phase of work. At Lakeside Floors, the work centers on helping homeowners navigate flooring solutions across carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, tile, and stone. Its not just floors there are countertop options for kitchens and bathrooms too. Much of the teamwork happens in what customers never see, seamless coordination that keeps projects moving forward while reducing interruptions to their days.

In those moments, Lakeside Floors was not about flooring. It was about how a business fits into our community. Customers confirm it through experience. Families return for new projects, parents recommend Lakeside Floors to their grown children buying their first homes. It is a trust that has grown through consistency, where a homes floor comes from people who care where the soles of those feet have been and where those souls are going.

“We tell people to take a breath,” Colleen Hoyt says. “Just do one thing at a time,” Kenny Hoyt adds.

Texas UNDER SKIES

Mike Cook with ProRoofing, Finds home through courage, community, and choosing to begin again.

Pro Roofing exists in Texas because Mike Cook and his family deliberately chose to move west and build something with intention in a place that felt right. Mike, an engineer by training, spent years working in corporate roles tied to utility-based construction work, while gaining a deep understanding of systems, structure, and how doing things properly makes all the difference.

Alongside that, he and his wife, Nicole Cook, have built businesses together, gaining firsthand experience in entrepreneurship, risk, and responsibility. Those years mattered and shaped how Mike thinks, plans, and shows up for people now.

When the opportunity arose for Mike to potentially open a Houston branch of ProRoofing, it was a long conversation full of methodical decision-making on whether his family should attempt to move out west. ProRoofing was founded in 2022 by a founder with years of industry experience. A childhood friend of Mike, who owned the ProRoofing business in Atlanta, had laid the groundwork, and together they mapped out what expanding west could look like. Mike has a decade of construction experience, and the ProRoofing team has decades of combined roofing experience. From there, Mike and Nicole talked it through carefully, and when they felt that they were fully committed to proceed forward, they made the steps toward moving west and selling their Home essentially closing that chapter of their lives in South Carolina with no regrets and nothing left on the table.

When they settled on Kingwood as the neighborhood they would settle in, it was simply because it felt like Home for him and his family. They found a house off-market and moved in quickly, another sign, Mike says, that things were lining up as they should for them to flourish in this area. Less than two weeks after arriving, a hurricane moved through the area... For most people, that kind of timing would feel like a bad omen or might cause it to be an overwhelming experience. For Mike, it was further confirmation that they were right where they needed to be. Roofs matter here. Homes matter here. And when storms hit, people need someone steady, informed, and present. Pro Roofing immediately became a part of the community response post-Hurricane, helping homeowners navigate damage, insurance confusion, and urgent repairs. It was hands-on, high-pressure work, but it made one thing clear: this was where Mike was meant to serve.

Mike approaches roofing the way an engineer would, methodically. He inspects, documents, explains, and walks homeowners through options. He considers factors such as how long someone plans to stay in their Home, whether they may sell, insurance, and what makes sense financially for the homeowner. He treats every recommendation as if he were advising his own family. He does not see himself as a salesperson. He sees himself as a community consultant. Many homeowners expect a quick estimate and a pitch. Instead, they get education, transparency, and time well spent. Sometimes that means telling someone they do not need a new roof yet, or it means explaining that the damage is more serious than expected. Either way, the goal is clarity, not pressure.

The ProRoofing team’s values are guided in Professionalism coming first; the team is Active and Tenacious in seeking solutions; they Care for both clients and one another; and they strive in a Team First mentality, meaning they follow through and show the same commitment at every job site. Better know as PACT(P - Professional | A - Active and Tenacious | C - Caring | T - Team First) the teams motto in striving to provide the best service. That

extends into the community through donated labor and materials to Habitat for Humanity. They stay connected in the community with active membership in the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. During major storm seasons, Mike coordinates support from other ProRoofing branches to reinforce local teams, allowing the company to respond with the PACT mentality, always, even when demand surges, never losing accountability, care, or quality.

When asked about what legacy and home mean to him, Mike talks about trust. He wants people to know he and ProRoofing worked for them and looked out for their best interests. As an individual, he is deeply connected to this community that he calls home, and being known for doing what he says he will do. In Texas, over the years, making this state home has always been something people have built deliberately. Sometimes it starts with land. Sometimes it begins with a decision. For Mike Cook, it started with a move west, trust after a storm, and steady work helping others protect what matters most. Because home, after all, is not just where you live. It is how you show up for others once you get there.

HARMONY Starts at Home

How one mother helps families restore balance and peace though her business Honeybee's Organizing Solutions, LLC

ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA MCCOURT

Melissa M. Martinez discovered the power of an organized home. Her work now helps families regain balance, creating spaces that reduce stress, support routines, and allow the house to feel peaceful again. Honeybee’s Organizing Solutions, LLC was born from real family life. While Melissa was raising young children, supporting her household through hectic work schedules, and managing a very

demanding career. During that season, she realized she had always lived an organized life and handled a home, her family, and a demanding career.

Melissa remains the first point of contact for every client relationship, working directly with families and businesses from consultation through completion. She understands people, and that homes don’t often become unbalanced because life is steady and calm. No, life is full of pressure. People and homes fell out of balance because their organizational systems no longer match the reality of their current-day-to-day. She focuses on restoring balance and creating organization models that work and support every family member and how they actually live. It is a function, over perfection. Building practical routines alongside her clients that ease the home management stresses, reduce decision making, and create systems that become second nature, like breathing.

Guided by her motto, “Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World,” Melissa’s work extends beyond traditional organizing. Through Honeybee’s, she offers comprehensive home and office resets for residential and commercial spaces. Her services include functional space planning, staging, moving concierge support, and hands-on design solutions that help clients navigate transitions with clarity rather than stress. Each project is approached as a partnership, built on trust and clear communication, allowing systems to evolve naturally alongside the people using them.

Melissa applied her healthcare industry knowledge to define and catalog aspects of her clients’ habits, schedules, and emotional readiness. She knows that actual lasting change can’t happen overnight. It happens gradually. We all need small daily resets that clearly help us meet realistic expectations for maintaining harmony in a home’s organization. It’s more than cleaning or tidying a physical space; organization considers the inner thoughts of the individuals in the home and creates comfort routines that don’t overwhelm. The most meaningful part of her work is watching the lives she touches reconnect with the space and the home, and seeing how simple changes can build a harmonious balance through habits.

Harmony isn’t created alone. Behind the scenes, Melissa is supported by a trusted team that assists both administratively and on-site, helping projects move smoothly while maintaining the high level of care clients expect. Whether working in a home a workspace, or places of worship, the focus remains the same: creating environments that function with ease and restore a sense of calm where it is most needed. Honeybee’s continues to grow. Melissa has expansion on her mind, and, looking strategically to the horizon, each partnership allows her to better serve Lake Houston families.

At its core, Honeybee’s is about creating space for life to feel manageable again, and at the center of her why is her family. Her husband, Robert, is not only her life partner but also Honeybee’s lead handyman,

“Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World”

craftsman, and problem-solver for projects. Their children, Mya, 11, and Lukas, 8, get to see firsthand what it means to build something with intention from their parents. It’s compassion combined with resilience. Her work happens one household at a time. In a world that often feels chaotic, Melissa believes calm can be built intentionally, one habit, one system, and one home at a time. By meeting people where they are and designing spaces that support how they truly live, she helps families and professionals create not just organized homes, but calmer lives.

Marcey Rogers built Dynamize Real Estate by sharing that a home is not a transaction, but a place where every day takes shape.

TURNING LISTINGS INTO LASTING MEMORIES

After fourteen years in real estate, Marcey Rogers was called to create Dynamize Real Estate. The name reflects her philosophy. To dynamize is to make something better, more intentional, more alive. It is the subtle shift that turns a house into a home where someone can picture their life unfolding.

Marcey works with a wide range of clients, from first-time buyers to growing families and longtime residents entering new seasons in their lives. No matter the circumstances, Marcey listens closely and guides her clients to recognize when a space truly feels just right. Staging is one way Marcey brings her understanding of home to life. Rather than filling rooms with rented furniture, she focuses on how a space feels in its first moments. Plants, rugs, light, and small, thoughtful touches soften a home and create warmth. Marcey knows buyers often decide within seconds whether a space feels comfortable or distant. Her goal is not perfection, but ease. She wants buyers to walk in and feel relaxed,

and sellers to present their home honestly without distraction. The details she adds are subtle, intentional, and designed to let people imagine real life unfolding naturally inside the walls.

To Marcey, Home is where memories begin. Her role as an agent is to help people understand how a listing will function as a home. Her deep knowledge of Lake Houston guides her. She can easily assist buyers and sellers in local neighborhoods. Sustaining deep understanding considering schools, routines, commutes, and the rhythms of daily living that only a Lake Houston Local could honestly know. She knows patterns of growth and stagnation in the area, where pockets of affordability and luxury homes reside.

Her work is grounded in education and experience, but guided by intuition. Buyers often need to decide quickly whether a space feels comfortable or distant. For sellers, they need to present their best without losing authenticity. Those early moments matter for both sides. Marcey views details not as extras, but as essential tools in helping homes tell their story. Marcey strives to create an emotional connection that helps buyers envision real life inside the walls, and to help sellers create a staged space that allows buyers to shape their first impressions unencumbered.

For Marcey, her life there is full of laughter, yes, but that joy comes with intention. She dreams of land just outside the city, of miniature cows and goats that exist

for no purpose than to bring in the maximum amount of joy to others. A place where people can visit, feed animals, slow down, and feel lighter than when they arrived. Her home is a place that makes others’ hearts feel lighter. Her dreams are the purpose that drives her, and behind everything she

“‘HELPING SOMEONE CHOOSE A HOME IS A RESPONSIBILITY. MY ROLE IS HELPING PEOPLE RECOGNIZE WHEN A SPACE FITS THE LIFE THEY’RE LIVING,’ SAYS MARCEY ROGERS, BROKER ASSOCIATE AND OWNER OF DYNAMIZE REAL ESTATE.”

does, the idea of home is inseparable from the work her dreams have built. Life is something we are all still imagining, and Marcey never lets herself stop dreaming.

She understands that homes carry weight. It is one of life’s most significant transitions, from first keys, final moves, empty rooms to full rooms. The moments that can feel daunting and those that happen quietly between milestones are uplifting for some and heartbreaking for others. It is in that nuance of understanding, from years of listening, watching, and caring more deeply than most, Marcey knows what the job requires; she is ready to help her clients navigate all those life moments with care, heart, organization, patience, reliability, and steadiness.

Helping someone choose their next steps regarding the place they have or will call home is, to Marcey, an act of stewardship. She takes responsibility seriously and is committed to guiding people toward spaces where memories and feelings flow easily, so they settle into a place that feels right, again and again.

CHOOSING TO REMAIN

AT ST. MARY MAGDALENE CATHOLIC SCHOOL FAITH LIVED DAILY SHAPES WHERE STUDENTS REMAIN ROOTED, AND EXPERIENCE HOME WITHIN COMMUNITY.

“God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good.”

– Lois Goudeau, Principal speaking the mantra of former pastor, Fr. Felix Osasona that the school still uses to this day.

St. Mary Magdalene is remembered not for who she once was, but for who she became and how she showed up for others. When others fled, she chose to remain. Her story is an active, present, and enduring witness that rings true, and St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Humble was the vision of former pastor Msgr. Paul Procella. Here since August 2000, the school has welcomed students from pre-K through eighth grade, and continues to serve students at those levels in growing within a community that values their presence. Guided by current and former faith leaders like Fr. Felix Osasona and Father Robert Kajoh.

Families can choose an environment where teachers know their students’ strengths, challenges, and individual learning styles. Learning at St. Mary Magdalene is designed to be inclusive and responsive. Assessments are used to guide instruction to best fit a childs needs. Students who need

support are met with care and resources. The goal is not to sort students, but to walk with them where they are on their unique path.

Faith is lived out daily. Students attend religion classes and gather for Mass. A prayer wall allows students to write intentions and return to mark prayers that have been answered. These practices allow students to learn that faith is not occasional grand gesture, but  consistent ordinary moments.

Community life is reinforced through traditions that urge families to participate and return year after year. Campus events such as the fall festival, field day, and celebrations throughout the liturgical calendar provide structure and rhythm. Observances like Día de los Muertos and All Saints Day connect students to faith, heritage, remembrance, and reinforce the need for a home community.

Students can engage in STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading/Writing, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning. The school hosts an Archdiocesan STREAM fair each year. Students have opportunities to participate in band, chess club (beginning in Second Grade), theater, and a full offering of athletic programs, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and track. These shared experiences and activities help foster confidence, accountability, and a sense of belonging.

What often reveals the depth of why so many call this school home is not solely enrollment, but what happens years later. Former students return as CONTINUED >

volunteers, coaches, and as new families choosing to remain active in the parish that raised them.

The sense of home is reinforced through service. Students regularly participate in food drives supporting Magdalene House, responding to real needs of local families. Students cultivate gratitude for the blessings in their lives and understand the responsibility, not obligation, of being a good neighbor in the place they call home. Service is never an isolated event, but a practice that forms habits which, through repetition, create a lasting ripple effect.

As the school continues to grow, leadership is actively planning for future campus enhancements that will further support athletics, performances, and community gatherings. The long-term vision includes a multipurpose facility designed to serve students academically and socially, reflecting the school’s commitment to continual improvement and investment in student experience. The long-term vision is to create a multipurpose space that would serve students academically, athletically, and communally.

Making that vision a reality will require partnership. School leadership has expressed hope and plans for collaboration with local businesses and individuals with trade skills willing to contribute expertise, materials, or services. Naming opportunities, donor partnerships, and community involvement are welcomed in the ongoing conversation centered on building this facility.

For a school built on the example of St. Mary Magdalene, the path forward mirrors its foundation. At St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School, home is not defined by proximity. It is built through consistency, where people remain. Where commitment and a strong sense of family, love, and academic excellence has remained a constant throughout the years. Where home now becomes something sustained by the countless pastors, students, and families that have walked the halls of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School, a community built by a vision that remains.

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.

Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.
