First Inning, Batter Up Those four words make me feel like I can start fresh and give it another go. January always feels a bit like standing at home plate with the whole field stretched out in front of you; you might not know exactly what life is about to pitch, but you square up anyway, ready to swing to try and knock it out of the park. As a small-town girl, I will forever love the simplicity of watching my boys out on the ball field, sunrises over the water, country living, sweet tea, and long talks on the porch with my husband. Remember, a positive attitude creates room for positivity, but the opposite is also true... Because we decide how we grow, and self-care begins with how we show up for ourselves. When we pour into ourselves, we’re able to pour into others. One of my favorite things about the Lake Houston community is its adaptability. My family settled here when there was only one road surrounded by woods, and I've seen this community grow and overcome hardships. Out here in Texas, we know grit. We know grace. What began as a quiet corner has grown into a lush community full of people and events. This area remains a place where people genuinely care. It's a supportive community that makes it easier to embrace each day. I believe strongly that life takes a village. Consisting of people who uplift us, cheer us on, show up when it matters, and remind us of our strength within. I have been blessed with that kind of village, the kind where someone answers the phone without hesitation when life happens. Tomorrow is not promised, and we know the good stuff doesn’t come from rushing; it comes from choosing what matters and showing up wholeheartedly. By finding people who intentionally choose you and focus on the good. What I love about Lake Houston is that anything negative thrown at this community it can handle it. You will find strength in your neighbors. My prayer for everyone this year is simple: may the good in your life multiply, may positivity fill your home and run over, may you find the time to prioritize your wellbeing, and may you remember that the life you want begins with one single step. They cross-promote one another and receive ongoing education across all specialties to ensure they are the best for their guests. The Spa at Salon M has become a trusted part of the Lake Houston wellness landscape, earning multiple honors across the region. The spa is a multi-year winner in the Houston Chronicle Best of the Best program, celebrated for Best Salon, Best Facial, Best Massage, Best Lash Studio, and Best Brow Studio. They are also a multi-category winner in the Cream of the Crop awards, including Best Salon, Best Massage, Best Facial, Best Brows, Best Lashes, and Best Place to Work. For Mandy and her team, these recognitions reflect genuine guest loyalty and the strength of the community they serve. That commitment is reciprocal, as The Spa at Salon M remains connected to a wide range of community organizations. This includes local schools and youth programs in Huffman ISD and Humble ISD, supported through athletics and 4-H. Additional outreach extends to the Boy Scouts, youth sports, local families, churches, and the Huffman Food Pantry. The team continues to champion

meaningful causes through Project Mammogram with the Northeast Hospital Foundation and the Star of Hope Women’s Shelter. Each year, they honor and celebrate Texas tradition by participating in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The newest initiative supports the Humble ISD Scholarship Program, and beginning in 2026, The Spa at Salon M will fund scholarships to help local students enter cosmetology school, with a focus on opening educational pathways for local youth. The spa’s annual anniversary celebration will help fund this initiative and continues to be a significant community event, drawing more than 150 guests, and features local vendors. As Mandy looks ahead, her long-term vision centers on growing the protégé program, expanding wellness offerings, and continuing to make The Spa at Salon M a safe encouraging place where both team members and guests can learn, grow, and feel beautiful.

Jennifer Dantzler, Inspire ND speaks to community members

For more than two decades, Inspire ND has served as a guiding force for families navigating autism and other forms of neurodiversity in the Lake Houston community. Originally founded as Including Kids, the organization began with early intervention services for children on the spectrum. Today, Inspire ND works to build truly inclusive communities through two central pillars: engagement and education. On the engagement side, the nonprofit provides families with safe spaces to connect and experience joy without fear of judgment. These gatherings include the Halloween Bash, Pictures with Santa Holiday Festival, and autism-friendly bingo nights. For more information or to volunteer at this year's upcoming events, Inspire ND welcomes community involvement throughout the year. Whether helping with stations at the AUSOME egg hunt and spring carnival, or supporting the Taste of the Town fundraiser. The education pillar focuses on strengthening the broader community's understanding of neurodiversity. Inspire ND provides training for first responders, businesses, churches, caregivers, and schools, enabling them to learn how to effectively support individuals with autism or other neurodiverse needs. Their work in neurodiversity in the workplace is especially impactful.

With so many people on the spectrum underemployed or unemployed, Inspire ND teaches employers how minor adjustments in hiring, communication, and work expectations can open doors for capable and motivated employees. Through every program, training, and event, Inspire ND's goal remains clear and consistent. The organization aims to foster a community that values the unique strengths of neurodiverse individuals. Supporting others and their needs, it welcomes them with compassion and understanding. The organization hosts a podcast titled "Shining Through: Inspiring Voices of Autism." support. Many neurodiverse individuals are fully capable of working and thriving, but they often need clear expectations, visual communication, or minor adjustments to succeed. She has witnessed firsthand how a simple change in structure can transform someone's ability to stay employed and feel valued. That personal perspective fuels the Inspire ND workplace training program, which gives businesses the practical tools to support neurodiverse employees. The results have already created life-changing success stories for local companies, including Chick-fil-A Wilson/Beltway 8, Insperity, the Rotary Club of Lake Houston, and the Humble Noon Lions.

A need for support, repeatedly heard from families and neurodiverse individuals, highlights a gap that still exists within churches and community spaces. Many families want to attend services or events, but worry their child or young adult may struggle in the unfamiliar settings or face judgment if they become overwhelmed. For Jennifer, helping churches and community events learn how to welcome neurodiverse individuals is not just another program; it's a passion. It is a personal mission to ensure that families feel welcomed and not excluded from these places of worship and connection. Something that has been a game-changer is technology. After hearing from parents who could not attend in-person sessions, Jennifer and her team shifted to a virtual Lunch and Learn model for their workshops and created a library of free online training resources. This allows parents to access support whenever and wherever is convenient for their schedules. Their goal is simple: meet people where they are and create more pathways for understanding for all neurotypes. Jennifer and the team at Inspire ND believe in a future where all are accepted. It's about strengthening confidence, easing isolation, equipping businesses with a genuine understanding, and ensuring that every individual and family knows they are never alone on this journey. When Wendell and his wife, Candi, first started D1 years ago, as young parents navigating work, life, and the fast pace of the greater Houston area, they wanted a place where their own children could learn discipline, confidence, and movement in a structured environment. They were not chasing a business dream. They were opening something they believed was deeply needed in the community. Wendell’s own experience as a former athlete and a North Shore local. He knew the Lake Houston community needed more than a standard youth sports facility. The community needed intentional individualized coaching, where real athletic development was placed at the forefront, and the program truly prepared kids for the next level whether that be high school, college, or beyond. Parents wanted quality. Kids needed guidance. D1 became the answer. Wendell saw quickly how many young athletes lacked structure, confidence, and clear direction. He often describes how many children come in wanting to play sports, but have never been shown proper movement, strength development, or how to build healthy habits. But once the doors opened, something unexpected happened. Adults wanted that same individualized care and began asking to train too. Families wanted to participate in shared classes. Seniors asked for strength building strategies to assist them as they age. Many adults admitted they felt intimidated in big box gyms and had never truly learned how to train with proper form. Wendell understood that hesitation well. He knew adults needed the same encouragement, structure, and accountability. The mission expanded organically, and Wendell and Candi embraced it. What began as a space to build young D1 athletes grew into a training community that supports the division one mentality at every age and fitness level. Candi believed firmly in the mission and in her husband. Her encouragement became the final spark that shifted everything

and helped Wendell expand their programs. “This place feels like home, and we can share that with others,” she reflects. Today, the D1 Atascocita location reflects everything Wendell and Candi value, and it mirrors the community they love. Lake Houston is a community that holds all kinds of kinds. D1 is more than a gym. “Its young athletes training with intention. Its adults pushing past the limits. Its every person who walks through the doors. Its the timid first timer determined to become an athlete. Its the families who show up together. Its seniors staying strong,” Wendell proudly shared. “Its a 65 year old member who never misses a workout because she is training to keep up with the grandkids. D1 is a place for everyone.
