T H E S C I E N T I S T St e v e Pe t illi After growing up in New York and attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Steve Petilli was recruited by the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and moved to Pasadena in 1990. There, he developed computer chips for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program (SETI) and later designed a communication chip used inside the Mars Sojourner Rover, the first to land on Mars. He left JPL to co-found his first startup developing high-speed video chipsets. It was acquired by Broadcom in 2000. He then co-founded a company that developed “VZ Navigator,” launched by Verizon Wireless in 2005. They were the first to utilize GPS in cell phones for voice-announced turn-by-turn navigation. Steve’s company was purchased in 2009. Since then, he has been an angel investor and now a venture partner. He guides technical startups in collaboration with UC Irvine’s innovation center and serves on two company boards.

He attended Notre Dame and was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1987. After two years with the Raiders, Steve was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and was part of the Cowboys’ Super Bowl XXVII victory. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos during his 17-year NFL career. Steve’s 36 touchdown passes were second only to Kurt Warner in the NFL in 1999. That same year, his 4,436 passing yards led the league, as did his 343 completions. Today, Steve is a licensed commercial insurance broker at Marsh Insurance Services, an analyst for CBS Sports and a motivational speaker. At Marsh, he handles all aspects of risk management for his clients. As the largest commercial insurance broker in the world, Marsh’s clients are generally middle market up to Fortune 100 companies. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE AREA? We moved to Laguna Niguel in the late ‘90s and based our Nolet Spirits U.S.A. North American headquarters in nearby Aliso Viejo. WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE? The short answer is, from all my travels, I determined that this is simply the best place to live and work—but don’t tell anyone. Orange County has all of the economic pillars that provide an environment for our family business to be successful: access to a highly skilled workforce, close proximity to airport transportation, reliable law enforcement, fantastic health care options through Mission Hospital and its affiliates, world-class performance and arts center and much more. Who wouldn’t want to be here? Out of all the great surrounding communities, I like the Laguna Niguel area the best. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE LAGUNA NIGUEL LIFESTYLE? Laguna Niguel is a beautiful community that provides for an active family life, wonderful restaurants, sports and fantastic weather. ANY FAVORITE RESTAURANTS OR ACTIVITIES? We are blessed to have many excellent restaurants in the area; so many that I cannot name a favorite. My favorite activities are playing soccer with the kids, golfing, tennis or simply going for a swim in the ocean. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPORT AND/OR SPORTS TEAM? As a Dutch citizen, it’s the Netherlands national football team, The Oranje, of course! I enjoy watching all sports in general including football, hockey, basketball, etc.

VAIL KIDS ADVENTURE GAMES: AUG. 7–11 The Kids Adventure Games will return to Vail for its 10th summer, offering kids ages 6–14 a race of a lifetime featuring river tubing, zip lines, cargo nets, obstacles, rappelling, mud pits, hiking, biking and more. The games are considered to be one of the coolest kids races on the planet. Featuring an obstacle-adventure course set in picturesque locations around the country, in teams of two, kids bike and trek a 3-plus-mile course while encountering both natural and manmade obstacles. In addition to the race, there is a Family Adventure Zone with interactive recreational activities put on by sponsors, including climbing walls, slack lines, cheer card stations and more. Prior to the race, a skills clinic is offered by local experts giving participants the opportunity to learn skills necessary for the race and build confidence with their teammates.
VAIL NATURE CENTER A farmhouse perched between a mountain meadow and the forested bank of Gore Creek houses the Vail Nature Center. This 7-acre facility in the heart of Vail is a tranquil gem filled with easy walking trails, bird-watching and beautiful scenery. Enjoy bird walks, wildflower walks, beaver pond tours, and full and half-day backcountry hikes. Classes covering special topics such as nature art, stargazing, photography and fly fishing are available every week throughout the summer.
