Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of fun vacation activities and trips to enjoy. But that’s not all. Some of the best summers include quieter times and simple moments… enjoying quality time with those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it’s refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the beach, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share some of the summer happenings around town as well as some family vacation ideas enabling us to get out and explore nature together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on Laguna Niguel’s Citizen of the Year, Jim McGinley, and to thank him for all he’s done to make our community a better place to live. And, speaking of service this Independence Day, we want to thank all the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life to protect others. A special thank you to all our military veterans and their families. 2021 LAGUNA NIGUEL CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Recently, Laguna Niguel resident Jim McGinley was named 2021 Citizen of the Year. We cannot think of anyone more deserving. I first met Jim four years ago while attending my first Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce meeting at El Niguel Country Club. I had just launched the Laguna Niguel Lifestyle project and, being new to the publishing business, was a bit apprehensive walking into a room full of our community’s top business leaders. Within minutes of entering the meeting space, Jim approached me with a warm greeting, smiling eyes, and a welcoming hand extended. His greeting was reassuring, and I could immediately tell that Jim was a special human being. No agenda. He was simply there to offer kindness, friendship, and support. To me, those are key characteristics of any good citizenship measure. Speaking with Jim during that first breakfast, I quickly realized he was a true “giver”—and I was amazed at all the service organizations to which he has volunteered his time. Jim is a Past President of the Laguna Niguel Rotary Club, Assistant Governor for our regional district, and a relentless servant to the Rotary Club’s service and outreach efforts. For the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce, Jim has served as a board member, membership chair, and ambassador for the past seven years. He has volunteered for his church, St. Timothy Catholic Church in Laguna Niguel, and has impacted countless families and individuals through his years of leadership and service with the Knights of Columbus.

Jim has also served our City of Laguna Niguel governance directly, through his time as chairman and vice-chairman of the Parks & Recreation Department. Additionally, he held leadership positions with the Laguna Niguel Sports Advisory Committee and is the founder of the Laguna Niguel Senior Games. “Jim McGinley’s service to Laguna Niguel has positively impacted every aspect of our community over a span of many years,” said Laguna Niguel Mayor, Elaine Gennawey. “Our school children, senior citizens, business owners, Veterans, and more have all benefitted from his generous actions. Never one to say ‘no’ when asked, Jim finds a way to effortlessly work towards a beneficial solution. And usually, Jim identifies the need and initiates the action without needing to be asked. He does not shy away from service which requires long-term commitment and is a valued collaborator. The way Jim serves is an inspiration to many in our community; his actions are those of leading a faith-centered life without regard to recognition.” It should be noted that the Citizen of the Year is not determined by the City of Laguna Niguel. Instead, all nominations come directly from community volunteers and the final selection is made through a vote of all past Citizen of the Year award winners. Jim continues to contribute to community outreach in many other ways that are not always noticed. He is always “present,” spreading the good news about our community at local events and on social media. Thanks, Jim McGinley, for all you do to make our community a better place for all of us!

A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND MEMORIES We’ve all heard that “a picture paints a thousand words.” I can’t help but think teenagers today are completely missing the point as they spend their days relentlessly “Snapchatting” an endless stream of smartphone selfies. Photographs document our most cherished memories and life events with family and friends. Every moment caught through the camera lens is a moment in time captured forever… Just as hearing an old song brings back long-forgotten memories and emotions, photos can have that very same effect. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that digital cameras became accessible. So, unfortunately, most of us over fifty don’t have a large library of old photos to enjoy. Because of this, we understand that taking at least one professional-quality family photograph annually is a great way to document that blur in time we call parenthood. No one wants those memories to fade. We asked our favorite photographer, Karen Reuter, for her advice:

DO YOU HAVE MANY CLIENTS THAT TAKE FAMILY PHOTOS ANNUALLY? I do! I’ve photographed this adorable family for their Christmas card for 8 years. Their cards are super creative and theme-based. We’ve done Raiders of the Lost Arc, Pokémon Go, Toy Story, Coco, and last year was a

recreation of the Loteria game card. I design the cards too, which is super fun!

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR PHOTOS? In Orange County, any time of year is great. The only limitation is the sun, which sets by 4:30 in the winter (a problem for busy families who aren’t available until 5:00 on weekdays) and around 8:30 in the summer (a problem for young children who struggle with late hours). Weekend sessions are my solution to this!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THE BEST LOCATIONS? CLOTHING TO WEAR? Choosing a location has a lot to do with how the photos will be used. For wall art, I recommend a location that compliments the decor of the room. For Holiday photos, it could be somewhere that is special to the family. Senior portraits can be at locations that are important to the student, a coffee shop, sports field, their room, a movie theater… Family members should wear clothes of the same theme: fancy, casual or chic. The colors should be cohesive and compliment the colors of the location. I recommend that the color scheme be limited to three colors with one color that is on each person in some way, be it a scarf, belt, undershirt, etc. CONTINUED >

WHAT SHOULD THEY DO BEFORE THE SHOOT TO PREPARE? Get a good night's sleep! People can be anxious about having their photos taken, so being well-rested and fed really helps! It’s easy for me to say, “don’t stress,” but that is the one thing that’ll make or break a session. Once you are at the location, let go of the feeling that you need to coach the kids during the shoot. That’s the photographer’s job. So, relax and enjoy the experience! SYMPHONY ON THE PACIFIC $100 Million Dollar Luxury Residential Estate Under Construction in Dana Point

Since I first arrived in Dana Point over forty years ago, the community has gone through tremendous change. With the Harbor renovation fast approaching—and the Lantern District’s mixed-use redevelopment well underway—long gone is the sleepy surfing and sailing community of times past. PCH was a two-lane road back then; and Golden Lantern hit its dead end just past Dana Hills High School, making this a slow-paced, traffic-free small town. Yes, times have certainly changed… as has the value of real estate.
