LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Gentlemen’s Issue An inspirational man has the power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by his greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you.

A MATTER OF STYLE WITH DAVE WELCH ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD
This summer, Dave Welch, founder of Costa Mesa-based b.spoke style custom clothier, reminds us how important it is to dress our best for every aspect of our business and social lives. As one of the premier custom clothiers in Orange County—and a personal image tailor to top executives and professional athletes—Dave is on a mission to get his clients a taste of what the “experience of dressing well” is all about. “Every man has his own personal brand,” says Dave. “And our team at b.spoke is keenly focused on creating clothing that reinforces that brand to the world.” Dave Welch is passionate about helping his clients look and feel great in all that they do. “Comfort and confidence go hand in
hand—and your style and appearance define how the world perceives you,” he adds. Early in his career, Dave developed a large following amongst NHL Hockey players, dressing well-known stars such as Teemu Selanne, Eric Lindros, Paul Kariya, and many others. Today, he’s focused on bringing his knowledge and talents to a loyal clientele of C-level business executives and high-net-worth individuals in over twenty-five metropolitan areas. Dave expands his business almost exclusively through referrals from satisfied clients. See more on b.spoke’s Instagram profile (@bspokestyle). And here are a few tips from Dave on how to tune up your style as we head into summer.
DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND “What we wear sends a message. I try to get my clients to assess their marketplace and competition, envision how they want to be perceived, and then dress that way. If you want to be at the top in your industry, you should dress in a way that reflects that. Your look should be better than your competitors.”
get it “Heading into summer, you’ll stay cooler and look stylish in a lightweight, cotton and linen summer jacket… unconstructed with no lining and very little padding in the shoulders for extra comfort.”
ST YLE STILL MATTERS “During COVID, everyone got a little sloppy and a little lazy—especially with hybrid work weeks. A stellar appearance not only shows respect for your clients, but it also reflects the quality of work your clients might feel like they are getting from you.”
keep it “Don’t throw away your ties. While they’re not as relevant today, you can always pull out a solid navy or
ADD SOME COLOR TO YOUR LIFE “Gone are the days when businessmen had to only wear navy and gray. Add a little color! Your wardrobe options will greatly expand, and you’ll look and feel better than ever.”
OWN THE ROOM “We don’t sell suits, we sell compliments. When walking into a networking or charity event, you want to ‘own the room.’ People take notice of an impeccable appearance… a perfect fit, beautiful fabric…You’ll stand taller and feel like a million bucks.”

these warmer summer months. But you’ll be wanting to bring them out again later in the year— especially for those cool evenings at the boat parade!” JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L AG UN A N I G UE L

FOUR MEN ELEVATING THE SOUTH COUNTY EXPERIENCE

HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? After 30 years in wealth management, I can confidently say the answer to this is simple- my work reveals what is of the utmost importance in anyone’s life – True Wealth. Consisting of health, relationships, spirituality, service to others, legacy building, peace, the “invisibles” and finances, True Wealth connects me to all 8 pillars of life that I’m passionate about. In particular, being in the moment to experience the “invisibles.” For example, a hug from your child at the

end of a long day is an invisible that goes unnoticed if you are not present. My sense of fulfillment c omes f rom k nowing t hat I am present for the invisibles, wise enough to remain a student of life, and healthy enough to spend invaluable moments with the people, places, and things I hold close to heart that are ever-priceless. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD YOU PICK AND WHY? Years ago I completed my Sommelier certification. I ’m p assionate a bout w ine and love to share what I know about pairings for special events and holiday meals. Every year on my podcast The Zandbergen Report we do a special holiday wine tasting episode where we break down the perfect wines for a variety of meals. So, it’s safe to say if I was in a totally different industry it would have something to do with wine!

WHAT’S THE BEST LIFE ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? “There are no absolutes in life,” and “Never say never; Never say always.” WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? The COVID pandemic was a gamechanger for most. I learned three very key things: 1. Do not overreact, 2. Stick to the plan, and 3. It’s never as bad as it seems….. or as good as it seems. The stock market as measured by the S&P500 tumbled over 35% in March of 2020. For many of us who “stuck with the plan”, we not only recovered within one month but went on to reach new highs.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MUSIC SUPPER CLUB BUSINESS? I’ve wanted to open my own music supper club since I was a young, 17-year-old saxophone player. I worked at The Drake Hotel at 56th and Park Avenue in Manhattan. It was a very iconic music venue… all the jazz greats passed through there. I just naturally gravitated into the space from there. WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK? I like boxing. It’s a great aerobic workout for legs, upper body, and the heart. Boxing really clears my head. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD YOU PICK AND WHY? I’d be a crooner and play the saxophone along with that.… A crooner is an old-time word for someone that sings smooth, melodic songs—like Frank Sinatra. Music is a big part of my soul. It’s just who I am. WHAT’S THE BEST LIFE ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? I was night shift elevator operator at The Drake Hotel. One night, the general manager walked up and said, “Son, success comes with responsibility.” And he was right. If you’re responsible, success will follow. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? I suffered a medical setback about four years ago which caused me to reflect on life and my future. I learned that a youthful state of mind and a youthful heart never have to leave you—regardless of age. It’s all about attitude!

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN WORKING IN EDUCATION? In 1997 after graduating with a degree in history I worked at Shelburne Museum in Shelburne VT, an open-air art and history museum. I designed exhibits, tours, and field trips for children. I enjoyed teaching. I also coached basketball, baseball, and softball. WAS THERE A MOMENT THAT INSPIRED YOU TO START COMMUNITY ROOTS ACADEMY? I was sitting in a cafe in Greenwich Village working on a graduate school project with classmates in my Bank Street cohort. We were designing a school and soon realized we had created something unique and discussed taking it beyond just a project. HOW DOES COMMUNITY ROOTS ACADEMY TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? Life development is my passion. Helping children

and adults discover their passion and achieve their goals inspires me. Nothing sums it up better than, “Hard work is the difference. Very hard work.” HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? Leadership is challenging and demanding work, so I enjoy challenging and demanding play! I exercise regularly… always with a mindset that I’m training for my next outdoor family adventure. THE BEST LIFE ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? I am in continual pursuit of mentorship, coaching, and collecting maxims and quotations. John Wooden once said, “Many athletes have tremendous God-given gifts, but they don’t focus on the development of those gifts. Who are these individuals? You’ve never heard of them, and you never will.” It’s true in sports and it’s true in life. Hard work is the difference. Very hard work.

WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START OSCAR & MA? I’ve long been associated with the Orange County Community Foundation. A few years ago, a nonprofit director mentioned that there was a lack of jobs and training for people from marginalized communities (formerly incarcerated, domestic violence survivors, and foster youth). My most recent business involves events, so when the pandemic started, I saw a need for nonprofits that rely on fundraising events but didn’t know how to quickly pivot to virtual. My idea was to start a nonprofit that solved both problems: create jobs for the underserved and help nonprofits with events and fundraising. Oscar & Ma is a social enterprise that does both. We produce high-quality events for nonprofits, and we provide on-the-job training to apprentices from underserved communities. The goal is for the apprentices to graduate from Oscar & Ma’s Academy with the job skills to have rewarding careers. HOW DOES YOUR CHARITABLE WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? My interests are primarily focused on people—mentoring, sponsoring, and helping them achieve their goals. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? I read a lot, exercise every day, and spend time with my family. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? After COVID nothing really surprises me. I’m just happy to have found ways to give back during these challenging times. THE BEST LIFE ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? My dad always said that the best way to achieve success is to stick with your goals through thick and thin and to maintain a balanced perspective regardless of the circumstances.

Walter Lachman:
no regrets
Laguna Niguel Resident and Holocaust Survivor, on the Importance of Keeping a Positive Attitude
ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN REUTER

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE
Laguna Niguel Lifestyle publisher, Mike Gerard, with Walter Lachman
After all the challenges we’ve been facing these past couple of years, it’s easy to get discouraged. First it was the pandemic, the masks, and the shutdowns… More recently, a slowing economy, spiking inflation, and out-of-control gas prices are continuously testing our faith and threatening our very livelihood. But we don’t need to fall into a sea of hopelessness. All it takes is a change in perspective—and we can always find inspiration from those who have overcome challenges far greater than ours. We’d like to introduce you to a Laguna Niguel resident named Walter Lachman. Walter is a 96-year-old Holocaust survivor whose story can serve as an inspiration to all of us. After being liberated in April 1945, with nothing but the clothes on his back, 17-year-old Walter Lachman immigrated to the United States, alone, to live with distant relatives in Massachusetts. He had only a 7th-grade education at the time. Within just three short years, however, he was admitted to Northeastern University in Boston. And in 1953, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and was elected president of his graduating class. How did he accomplish that education milestone so quickly? “A positive attitude and night classes,” he replied. “I started working as a stock boy for a man who owned a family clothing store,” Walter recalls. “And it wasn’t long before I became a salesman, and then assistant manager.” After some time, the Van Heusen shirt company bought the store and added more locations. Walter became a division leader, overseeing eight locations in small towns throughout New England. Walter eventually bought some of those stores and opened more of his own. When Walter was 55 years old, he married a wonderful lady from Chattanooga Tennessee named Jean. They raised two daughters together who went to great colleges, but the girls had no desire to operate retail stores. “I then sold the business and the buyer agreed to retain all of my
employees,” Walter said proudly. “I stopped working when I was 62 and have been retired ever since.” Walter and Jean started visiting Laguna Niguel during the winters because it was so cold and snowy in New England. “The first year, we came and rented a little apartment for four weeks,” Walter recalls. “The next year, we stayed for six weeks… the year after that, for eight weeks. We finally bought this house in 1995. My wife passed away about 12 years ago and I’ve been living here alone ever since.” We asked Walter what he likes most about our community. He replied, “Everything. I have many good friends and we’ve always had wonderful neighbors. The weather is great, and everyone is so kind. Friends often stop by and bring me food. If I ever need help or can’t lift something, they’ll come right over.” Finally, we asked Walter if he has any regrets about the significant challenges he faced in his early teen years. “Not at all,” he replied. “Life goes on and I’m very grateful for the opportunity this country has provided me. I was able to complete my education, get married, and have a family of my own. Life is what you make it. It’s all about keeping a positive attitude and I’m a very lucky man.” We’re lucky to know you too, Walter.
